What is a hammer down? I thought it was what you call the flick. Could you please show what exactly a hammer down is and how to do it? Love this channel, thank you for the work you are putting into it.
Hi Lauren .. started out in school orchestras (60+ years ago) ... Just started Old Time/Celtic a few years ago. Thanks for the tips. Time to get the fiddle out and have fun!
This is so helpful... and I'm having a great time now playing through the fiddle tunes I know and looking for opportunities to throw these in! Thank you Lauren!
Excellent. I have always heard the "turn: referred to as a roll love the fact that you refer to Scottish, Irish, Celtic, rather than just one of them as many do. in this type of music these techniques are used by all Celtic musicians
I've been playing guitar for about 40 years and decided to learn violin now at 62 years old. Flicks and turns are called hammer ons and pull offs when done on a guitar 🎸
Hi Lauren, great tips here... I'm new to fiddle although my main instrument is Tenor guitar. Could you do a vid on double stops and other chordy tips & tricks on fiddle? Take care, Mike.x
Nicely done! Is the flick called a staccato on other instruments? If you touch a key on the Piano like a Hot Iron, it's called a staccato. The flick is a nice way to "spice" up your music! I have heard the term flick used with Guitar and Banjo players also. Does the turn symbol look like the capitol letter "S" laying on it's side? It seems that music stays in memory longer than other things, for some reason. I notice in your titles, you use the double slash "//". This also appears in some hymnals at the end of the song, but I don't know why?
A staccato is different from the flick and is done with the bow instead of the fingers. I'd say the flick is more similar to other types of ornaments (like a grace note or trill). I'm not sure what the notation would be, but most of this type of stuff was passed along aurally, rather than written.
Hi Nomi! I have lots of videos on beginner technique in the Violin Basics playlist on my channel. I also have a Violin Basics course on my website that you’re welcome to check out! Good luck! 🎻

Yes yes the turn is something I could never figure out just by listening. Thank you!🙏

It would be great to have the sheets you are playing, suuuuper nice 👍
Great! I play classical violin, but I am going to call it the “flick” from now on. So much cooler than “grace note”!! Thanks
I really like this new series, Lauren! Thank you!❤🎻🎶

Hey Mike! I have an older video on double stops, but I might include some of that in this series too!
@@TheTuneProject haha after I wrote the message I found that one! But yeah please do some more tips on chords & stuff. ☺
Cool
So for flicks and turns, is that kinda like improvising what you think will sound good there? Like it isn’t written into the sheet music right?
Occasionally grace notes will be written in, but for the most part we fiddle players improvise when it comes to ornaments, as you said!

My idol.....😍
So sweet!
I really can’t understand is it flicking the two other fingers or just one on the C?
Is the turn the same as the 5 note roll?
I'm not as familiar with that term, but I would imagine so!
Can u plz help me from beginning coz I even don't know the notes and control just know to hold violin..plz
