Excellent video, Naill. This has solved a lot of bowing issues for me. Also, nice to see you're not married to a single grip style.

Hi. This may be a dumb question, but...
When I was a bit younger, I was interested in learning the violin (but never did). Now that I am older, I would rather play Irish/ Celtic music, partly for the family history, and a few other things.
I have started looking around for someone to teach me, but all I can find are regular violin lessons. So my question is, as regards the actual instrument, is there a major difference between the violin and a fiddle? If I take violin lessons, might I use that knowledge (and the violin...) to play Irish fiddle tunes?

That is a very good question!! I wish I had taken some classical lessons when I first started out playing the fiddle (Scottish traditional, mostly, when I was 23), because a little bit of basic technique is very helpful! I've taken some classical lessons recently and it has really helped my playing a lot! So my answer is: do both! :) Good luck! /Sofie

It is indeed a good question. There are huge differences between classical violin and fiddle. But I think the beginning is pretty much the same. So you could learn the basics of violin and if you have a good teacher he will not give you only etudes and instead folk songs.
Some ways to find fiddle players: Go to Irish sessions or pubs and ask the players there, google for Irish fiddle players and where they are located. Irish Folk festivals are a point to meet fiddle players as well, or just write to the organisers. Or learn violin and teach yourself the fiddle with these online lessons.
