I’m watching this in 2021 after developing neuropathic pain. It’s very helpful and somehow comforting to see how this pain is perceived in the body and what can be done about it. I’m expecting to be called in to the hospital soon to be tested and hopefully will soon know more about what can be done. Currently on Pregabalin, which is working so far. Thanks for a beautifully clear explanation!
Hello Dr. I am a 48 years old man suffering with Huntington's disease. Suffering in the real sense of the word. My whole left side of my body is in pain. Right side no pain. Sometimes less very often worse. Until now no doctor could say anything about how it works within my body. (We don't understand it, we can't find it) it must be between your ears. Until now. The famous Dutch brain scientist prof. Scherder wrote something about it in the Lancet. I contacted him and he is willing to help me. He says It's probably central neuropathic pain. I cried because nobody else took it serious. Central Neuropathic pain can be a living nightmare. Thank you for explaining how it works. It's common know in Parkinson's and MS. But the knowledge of central neuropathic pain in HD is often not there.
You are amazing; I'm just sorry I cant tell you how much intellectual/medical support you've given to me and likely millions of others before, during and presently (2022). I've just been prescribed Nortriptyline (along w my old friend Gabapentin) for neuropathic pain at age 70. I was afraid to start a tri-cyclic, but listening to you, I will give it a try...the pain is chronic and disrupts everything in my life. Please take care of yourself, and just know you are loved in the best way by many. Thank you again.
i have had a burning and needle like pain all around my body for 2 years and have developed anxiety from it. im scared to go outside or even be in heat because the pain is unbearable, its gotten worse and in scared that this isn’t treatable. i just want to live a normal life again. 😔
I went into ketoacidosis coma for 3 weeks at the age of 15 years old, i had neuropathy in both my feet, i was prescribed to gabapentin and it didnt help at all. Neuropathy is the most painful physical pain ive ever felt in my whole life (now im 19) and my body actually healed my neuropathy through exercise. I had to learn how to walk again but i noticed that when i started walking more, the pain went away over time.its literally is the worst pain ever .
Thank you for the clear explanation. I've been reading "Understanding Pain" by Fernando Cervero and your lecture was great reinforcement of what I just read. I find the study of neuroscience so fascinating. I would love to be a student in one of your classes! Thanks for posting this.
I have been climbing up doses of gabapentin, duloxetine and amatryptaline. My doctors say just to keep increasing, and don't seem to see that this isn't a sustainable solution. Have severe M.E./C.F.S, every day is unbearable pain. I'm so scared by the pain. Have no where to go.
I have nerve pain after a bi-lateral brachial plexus injury. Damaged nerves - no avulsions. The drugs are really not that effective and come with many side-effects. We desperately need something better.
Ive had nueropathic pain for nearly 20 years, and due to scar tissue in the site, its one of the more severe cases, but I've recently got medication free, still have pain, but still had pain on many of the mentioned medications. Ive also found a huge assistance using a TENS machine, although, of all my arm nerves, i have one that wasn't severed in the accident, and found different placement options, i assume, along this active nerve, really helps, as you need to feel the electrical stimulation shooting up the arm. Intense gym workouts, with both weights and cardio, and really pushing yourself to being drenched in sweat, is also great help at reducing the pain. Ive had SOME success with acupuncture too, although wasn't able to maintain the necessary frequency, as probably only provides a few days per treatment. Massive quality of life improvement by getting med free, i feel like my old self again, but also isnt easiest option, but hope this info can help someone on the journey!
Nerve injury ( e.g iatrogenic malpractise) induced neuropathic pain is impossible to be treated with anything else than some form of neuromodulation ( either drg or dsc). Once the pain is centralised , it is game over.
Dr put me on gabapentin and and I need physiotherapy for my pelvis because it’s not aligned and I can’t walk properly and am using the wrong muscles. I get bad lower back pain from walking a lot and walking down stairs is really painful and my legs shake. I have stairs in my house and really struggle some days. I really hope the gabapentin helps with my pain
Wow awesome video, I had 2 inguinal surgeries within the past 2 years I was okay but 4 days of heavy drinking and I got sick started vomiting and I started having a sharp burning pain that would be consistent in the left groin area that burns and radiates down the back of the knee, could that be cause of a compressed nerve in the groin??
Kudos for the Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard about - Taparton Sturdy Nerves Takeover (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a great one off guide for Getting rid of Neuropathy minus the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my cousin at very last got cool success with it.
I wanted to update here. I had an RCT retreatment at another dentist. Although some more of the pain at the root tips are gone, it seems i have an on and off inflammation near that tooth. Constant teeth hygiene is my best friend now.
i had to take a study quiz and the question was- what type of pain is endometriosis pain- i selected persistent, visceral and neuropathic pain- all were incorrect! I still don't know that correct answer
Terrible pain in the top of my foot and leg after breaking my femur near the knee in June 2023. Taking GABAPentin and extra strength Tylenol but still in pain. Very Frustrating a at times depressing.
I have dealt with a lot of pain in my lifetime like most people. But I have noticed that worst kinds of pain for myself is tooth pain and muscle cramp pain in the legs especially at night. Where does muscle cramp pain belong in all this?
My son had surgery for ACNES 2 years ago when he was 14. Now, for over 2 years the pain of the damaged nerves has been too much to handle. He cannot go to school anymore, no sports etc. It’s horrible. Gabapentine and amitriptyline don’t work. Is there ANY alternative? 😔
What are some of the diseases/conditions if someone has severe pain responses when they have a UTI infection, for example, and they go catatonic. What makes some people have excellent pain tolerance, or higher than normal, and what makes someone else have severe pain responses? Is there help for them?
Yes, there are several treatment options of people have pain or disproportionate pain. Have you watched my video on pin management? However, pain does not cause a catatonic response, this is a rare form of schizophrenia.
Dr. John Campbell please share the name so I can do some reading. I have someone in my life who actually goes non responsive on rare occassion but it is always a result of an infection that gets successfully treated and they recover. Is this a seizure disorder? As well, they sincerely go into a sort of physical shock when pain hits their body. I will look up your pain management video

I do not know if any one has tried fresh ginger taken by mouth for neuropathic pain but recently I started to. I was using external oil and ginger for years but started eating a half (heaping) teaspoon when my pain is unbearable and it works. My pain is the result of shingles over 6 years ago. I keep the fresh ground ginger in a small amount of Gin. Keeps for long periods in gin. You may want to try it. It is working for me.
