Professor Murphy, You are a gift, a blessing to this world. I cry watching your neurology playlist esp no 66. I’ve seen over a dozen specialty doctors, nobody helps me I have Tarlov Cyst, Perineural cysts in my sacrum. They eroded my sacral laminae, compressed nerves. It’s been 10 years since I was diagnosed. Understanding Wallerian degeneration and regeneration helps. You are the best teacher. I wish I knew you when you lived in Hawaii. I’m grateful finding you 🙏

Great video man! I went to a meditation retreat one and a half years ago where I had to meditate 10 hours a day for 10 days. About a fifth day in I felt intense pain in my back but the instructions were to just accept the pain and not to react and wait for the pain to pass. So I was about 45 minutes in to a 1h session and I was really on the verge of giving up and ready to move my body to relieve the intense pain, when all of a sudden I felt the intense pain just evaporate. Instead I felt this pleasent buzzing numbness. And the funny thing is it became a habitual response for my body so the next time I felt that intense of a pain in my back I didn't even have to suffer for 45 minutes before my body decided to relieve the pain.
You helped me undestand some of the mechanisms that were behind my experience and I am sincerely grateful for that!

Good video for a quick summary of the wiring paths associated with pain modulation. A couple of minor niggles tho' - a bang on the head alleviated by rubbing the head is not a good example to use for the spinal cord pathways. The cranial nerves in the head don't go to the spine. He should have used a bang on the elbow or something. He also said that the inhibition of the pain neurons in the spine reduce the size of the action potentials going to the brain. Action potential size is unaffected, what he should have said was the threshold for firing of the action potential is changed so that the number of nerve pulses and the rate at which they fire is reduced. He maybe could have mentioned the itching pathways as a form of pain but there is still things that they don't know about them.
