“I may never upgrade again.” When I was a kid, my dad said that twice about new computer stuff he brought home. It didn’t take long for him to stop saying that.
Was this around the time of Pentium 2, 3, and 4?🤔 Coz back then, the time it took new hardware to come out, took as long as it took you to drive to a retailer, buy a PC and drive back home...just in time to see an advert advertising new hardware and the fact that what you just bought, is now obsolete.🤣
This makes me think, when my friend bought one of the first 1 GB hard drive way back when. It was super expensive and I asked him "Isn't this a bit expensive? What will you do with this?" and he replied to me "Man, I won't have to buy another hard drive, ever, for the rest of my life! I'll never fill this one up!". Boy, was he wrong!
Oddly, I can remember being almost overwhelmed by the amount of space I had on my original IBM XT. 10 MB of spinning storage. How could that possibly ever be filled up. How could anything be faster? I'm just saying...
Software has become bloated and more complex. If everyone stuck to the UNIX philosophy, we wouldn’t need nearly as much storage, our hard drives would last a lot longer both in terms of wear and actual data stored.
You need to tighten the screws on the CPU... it is a KNOWN issue... the torque click on the tool that comes with cpu doesn't really fully tighten the CPU bolt down screws as they should be. I had same issue with 3990x

Honestly when Zen 3 Thread Ripper I wouldn't be surprised if he upgraded, as it should be significantly fasting in gaming due to each CCD being being a 8 core CCX, so CCX latency will be a thing of the past, and I assume Windows having thread ripper and the 3900X and 3950X will actually be able to schedule tasks which wont use more than 8 core on a single CCX/CCD, like a 20% performance increase a lot of games and upto 30% in some games is probably what you are going to see.

Wait until samsung or another company releases a ssd that fully maximizes the ps5 speed, he barely competed in read/write speeds while having nearly 3 times faster pcie 4 speed, Sony is very smart with thier strategy they are like a 1080ti gpu that takes on a 2060(Xbox and pc) gpu and still get better fps because power(tflops) isnt everything but so is speed
I was thinking about threadripper because I use blender, but then i thought about it and realized I game more than I bake or render so I picked up a ryzen 7 1700x (this was months before 2nd gen ryzen) and the extra speed per core would benifet me more.
It depends on what you're doing. It's only really not for gaming because they're not leveraging that many cores or threads. If you're doing compiles of things, like embedded Linux images or...heh...games (yes), then it kind of makes sense. It's only not for gaming because it's blindingly expensive for power you're likely not to leverage unless you're like me... ;)
Linus plays VR (which is already CPU and GPU intensive), non-turn-based strategy (Age Of Empires, Dawn Of Discovery), and fast-paced rhythm games (Beat Saber), too.
Kinzuko To be fair, 3rd gen TR is kind of a different story - the individual cores are SO much faster than 1st gen TR, but the lowest core count you can get is still way expensive. I have a couple 8 and 16 core TR 1st gen running VMware, but I wouldn’t want to game on those. The value per core is still insane, if you are rendering or virtualizing or anything that actually uses them all.
I finally understand why there's a DP-in on my Thunderbolt 3 AMD motherboard! Whoa! Thanks for that tip! Doesn't really do anything for me since I'm already using all my display outs, but nice to know it's there!
@@jaumegarcia Yes but not fast enough to do instant level loading or anything useful, and you can never optimize a game unless the platform is a fixed standard. To be fair this one maybe fast but it isn't really suitable for gaming either. It has no controller/cpu onboard (or not a good enough one) to do the transfer work. Add on cards should really do their own processing work independent of the main cpu's. The Gravis Ultrasound was such a beast because of this as far back as the mid 90s. And all raid cards have their own cpu. I don't know the full details of the PS5s setup but I'd assume they have some custom hardware on it to handle to data transfer without working the cpu.
Eh it seems more and more 5 years is pretty obtainable. CPUs like say a 4690k 2600k. Systems with 16gb ddr3 ram all easily lasted 5 years the 980ti still runs games very well also 5 years old. Tech use to be flying faster but seems to have slowed down a bit now days. HeisenbergWalt Apollo as far as I know didn’t use paper (probably thinking of punch cards, it’s fine) or hard drives, but used “Core Rope Memory”, where, according to Wikipedia, wires were weaved though and/or around magnetic cores to store data. And they used these instead of hard drives even though it was the late 60s because this needed to get to the frickin Moon and Hard Drives were still too big and heavy.

Best quote of the year, actually.

That's your choice
Same, except my rack sits on my desk cuz I have no space
Been there... By now I have the whole house wired up with ethernet and the server is in the cellar... No more noise for me.

Everyone: "But you said Threadripper isn't for gaming!?!?!"
Linus : 🙄 (only plays turn-based strategy)
Is Anno 1800 not turn based? That’s the one I was referencing - he talks about it all the time
Kinzuko To be fair, 3rd gen TR is kind of a different story - the individual cores are SO much faster than 1st gen TR, but the lowest core count you can get is still way expensive. I have a couple 8 and 16 core TR 1st gen running VMware, but I wouldn’t want to game on those. The value per core is still insane, if you are rendering or virtualizing or anything that actually uses them all.
