    Ponds are the best for gold fish, the seasons and weather is good for them as it is a natural occurrence and their best chance of success and they have long happy lives

      Alex Trubshaw but you need to have a pond filter which will cost $700 to $2000

    Their little faces are so cute! Our common goldies are in a pond so I never get to really see them, but I know they are happier in there than they would be in a tank.

    Nice Video. I appreciate your clean, well aerated tank with live plants. I'm always preaching big tanks and few fish = much healthier long lived Goldfish. Even Fancies can live over 10 years with good care.

    First of all, your tank is very attractive. Second , I see that this video is 4 years old, but in case you are still into this hobby, I will ask you a question. My wife was determined to get three fancy tail goldfish, and we bought them and stuck them into a 10 gallon tank. pretty bad, huh? I did not know this until I did research AFTER they were acquired. Now what? How much time do we have until this becomes an emergency, and what size tank should we get for a "forever" home for these Walmart rescues? PS I noticed that your black fish is kinda rolling, so is this normal?

    • @tithra33
      @tithra33  10 років тому +5

      Hi, my black fish had a swim bladder issue and eventually had to be euthanized because of it, so no, the rolling is not normal ;) A minimum of 15-20 gallons per fish is recommended. But if your 3 are juvies, you can start with a 40 breeder and upgrade as you need (or go right for a 60-75 gallon). Large sterilite tubs can be used if you need to buy some time before you get a larger tank. I'd also suggest getting yourself a drop test kit like the API master test kit so that you can start testing your water (don't buy test strips). Last thing I'd suggest is checking out and posting in kokos goldfish forum :) lots of good knowledgeable people there who can help you out :)

    • @kaunasprince
      @kaunasprince 10 років тому

      Tithra (Green Mountain Goldfish) I don't know how old they are. Unfortunately there were no birth certificates. I would say they are about 3" long nose to end of tail. One of mine seems to have that swim bladder issue, but I am attempting to get it better with some advice I found on line. We shall see. How did you euthanize it?

    • @kaunasprince
      @kaunasprince 10 років тому +3

      Tithra (Green Mountain Goldfish) What exactly is a 40 gal "breeder". and what is different about this tank that it has it's own very descriptive name.
      I did join Kokos...thanks for the suggestion. These unexpected issues with goldfish is really stressing me. I am quite familiar with tropical fish and many years ago I did have a goldfish, but it lived in a community tank with tropical. This issue with tank sizes is mind blowing! I wish I were a bit more hard hearted and just return them. Anyway, I will plan on two fish as I have a bad feeling about the one with the bladder problems. A 40 gallon should be more than enough.

    • @tithra33
      @tithra33  10 років тому +3

      Clove oil mixed in a tub of water is the most humane way to euthanize. It basically acts as anesthesia, a little sill simply slow down function and essentially put the fish to sleep, more will stop vital functions and kill the fish

    • @tithra33
      @tithra33  10 років тому +2

      It's just the name of the tank, liky because it was initially preferred by breeders is my guess. It actually hiolds almost 50 gallons though it's called a 40, it's a nice tank for goldfish because it has a good amount of surface area and less height (for example Id choose a 40 over a 55 any day because a 55 is taller and skinny), it just has nice dimensions ;) ask at kokos about the swim bladder, there are often ways to manage it

      do u change ur water atleast once a week, is ur tank in direct sunlight?? what filter do u have? if u dont already maybe u should try putting some carbon in the filter thats what i do when my tank is cloudy

    • @angiedarst6820

      Amanda Barlow How I keep my water crystal clear in my 20 gallon tank is by using a Marineland Bio-Wheel Power Filter 350 (for up to 70 gallons), aquarium sand, limit my fish's feedings to 1-2 times a day, use an air stone, change 20% my water once a week, and not over crowed my tank. The #1 main cause of foggy/cloudy water is over feeding. The #2 main cause of foggy/cloudy water is lack of water changes. The #3 main cause of foggy/cloudy water is not enough filtration and aeration. And the #4 main cause of foggy/cloudy water is having your tank next to or in front of a window, the strong sunlight and heat will cause green/yellowish tint to your water called an algae bloom. I hopes this helped a little. Good luck ;)

    • @angiedarst6820
      @angiedarst6820 10 років тому

      And the way you can fix your foggy/cloudy water is by getting a stronger filter system, use sand NOT gravel, have real live plants NOT fake plants (cause fake plants only look good but they don't help you water like the real live ones do), limit your fish's feeding to 1-2 times a day, do 10-20% water changes once a week, make sure your tank isn't over crowded, have an air stone, and use the recommended amount of CaribSea Bio Magnet Clearifier. CaribSea Bio Magnet Clearifier made my water soooo clear within 1 day's time. It worked great wonders and made my water clear so quickly.. I was amazed by it

    • @jessicahorner2040
      @jessicahorner2040 10 років тому +2

      1: i always suggest to have a filter that puts out twice the tanks size per hour. so say a 10 gallon should have a filter that can do 20 gallons.
      2: live plant are a huge help. they decrease the amount of nitrates and nitrites in the water and help to clear it up.
      3: WATER CHANGES. not that i'm screaming , but they are a must. at the very least do a 10 % every week. at least.
      4: this is just a personal preference of mine. Use sand instead of gravel. it holds less dirt wheres as gravel easily lets dirt fall though it to rot. oh and it doesn't have to be real sand, fake sand works too.

    • @antswearingpants19
      @antswearingpants19 7 років тому

      Angie Darst 10-20% water change isn't enough for a goldfish you should do a 80-90% water change every week

    I have a 30 gallon/110 liters tank where I have 2 telescopes (a Dark moor and and an Orange telescope). I bought them around a year ago and have grown a lot since. They are already around 3 inches/8cm long and 2,5 inches long/6cm long respectively (without the tale) and I want them to keep growing. Do I need to change the tank since you have a 40 gallon/150liters tank or is it ok with the one I have now?. Would they be ok or grow normally in my current tank? They seem to be healthy and ok and seem to have space to me for now. Thanks for answering

      Alex Like she said, 20 gallons for one and 10 for a additional one, so what you have now is fine although bigger is always better! I’d recommend a 40 gallon for some nice happy healthy fish plus it gives them some wiggle room so you can really enjoy watching them swim about! :)

      An Update: my goldfished passed but they lived for over 5 years, which is more than I have ever had my goldfish to live. They grew to be almost 12cm/4 inches? and 15 cm/5inches?... sadly my Dark Moor got trapped accidentaly in the filter and my Orange Telescope got sick (eye fungus issues). I even had another goldfish, one like the one you have in here. It lived for 4 years with my other fishes, but also died of sickness (bladder problems). I was so sad.

    You are correct about the growth. When I was a kid I had a regular goldfish in a bowl for about a year or so and then gave the fish to my cousin who put it in an aquarium. Within a year the fish was unrecognizable to me because it was huge.

    Eek! I have a 6 year old Fantail and 2x 2 year old Comets in a 32L tank. Thankfully I'm upgrading them to a 152L new tank I just got. So far I've bought a few ornaments and some more things i.e HBH sinking pellet food, their diet has been changed to included shelled peas and bloodworms once a week along with their regular pellets in between. some pH Proper 7.5 water treatment, StressGuard, Aquarium Salt, a Fluval U4 Internal Filter and Natural looking gravel. Good advice, and I love my fishies.

      if the fish fits in a 10 gallon its only a baby. they need room to grow. i mean you wouldn't just buy a child one pair of shoes and expect them to fit forever right? 10 gallons may work for a while but if you want your fish to be able to grow it will need more room ok?

    I have learned alot watching this video and have kept goldfish for years. I took my tank down a couple of years ago because my fish kept dying. I didn't realize you could do partial water changes weekly. I now think that this was the problem and I am thinking about resetting up. My tank is 125 gallons I also know that I got some sick fish from Petsmart and Petco. Would go back in a day after buying and saw signs on their tank that the fish were sick.

    In the old days (yes i'm an oldie fishkeeper!) we used to use the gallon per fish size etc, which is in its own right perfectly acceptable. However with the filters they have around these days, you can usually push it a little bit.
    You are correct about the comets/normal goldfish, huge things, thankfully grow slow over the years.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  13 років тому

    @johncstrick Thanks! My personal recommendation is usually bare bottom. Most serious goldfish enthusiasts do keep a bare bottom tank. Goldies produce a lot of waste that can get trapped in the gravel, bare bottom resolves this issue. It is sooo much easier to clean. You can do something in between where you can scatter some pebbles/river rocks/gravel on the bottom so that it is still mostly bare, but the fish still have something to look through.

  • @tithra33

    hi! It is called a bubble wand or air stone :) You can get them at any pet store. You will also need to buy an air pump to run it (pumps air through the bubble wand to create bubbles). The tetra whisper is my favorite air pump. It's very quiet.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  12 років тому

    When I had the tms I did vacuum it like gravel. You need to be a little quicker pulling the vac out of the tms than you do with gravel because the tms is light enough to be sucked up by the vac if you hold it in the substrate too long. That being said, I know many with tms just skim the surface with the gravel vac without actually putting it down in. I was just never comfortable only doing that. I never had issues with the tms getting into my filters, but I know others have.

    You can shorten your intakes to be a couple inches from the tms to prevent it from getting sucked up into your filter if you are concerned about it :) I am back to barebottom now, I like the look of the tms, but I never felt like I could keep it clean enough for my liking (but I'm a bit hyper vigilant lol)

    Regarding the growing of the fish. I also have heard that the hormone is released regarding the body itself, but the organs will push out the skin/scales which usually causes dropsy.
    Have also done tests myself with this over the years, and have noticed that goldies grow larger AND quicker in larger tanks.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  12 років тому

    Yes, you definitely need to grab a buffer asap. That is a dangerous (and potentially deadly) drop in Ph for your fish. You likely have low kh (you can buy a test for this if you want to take a look), so you need a buffer to raise the mineral content of your water. Make sure you get a powder buffer (the liquid ones like Ph up are crap). Seachem Gold buffer is a really good one you can get most places. I use Buff it up (goldfishconnection online), you can also use the API proper Ph.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  13 років тому

    @jaycymru I do agree that you can overstock a bit and get away with it, the big thing though is keeping up on the water changes to make it work... It's really all about the water changes! And most people (particularly younger individuals or those new to the hobby) just don't have the time or won't put in the effort to keep the water parameters in a densely stocked tank safe.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  12 років тому

    That's fine as long as you test your water and do your water changes regularly :) if you're in the US petco is having their dollar per gallon sale right now, so it's a great time to get a tank. A 40 gallon is an awesome size for two goldies ;)

    Until you can upgrade your tank I would suggest getting a large storage tub (e.g. sterilite storage bin). You can get a big 20-30 gallon one for really cheap, then just put your filter and air stone on it :) It's a great way to do a temporary upgrade :) Good luck on your tank hunt!

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  11 років тому

    Hi! Yes, I will put that on my list. However, spawning typically happens at certain times of the year outside and tend to be closely related to temp changes, such as water warming in the spring time. So, sometimes allowing tank temps to drop a bit and then slowly raising them in the aquarium can spur spawning if the fish are of breeding age etc. Two goldfish need a minimum of 30 gallons, 40 gallons is preferable.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  12 років тому

    If it is an issue of affording a tank you can also use a large plastic (food safe) storage bin with a filter and air stone to house your fish. You can get a 20-30 gallon one of these for 10 dollars or so at walmart. If it is an issue of parents not allowing something larger, the best thing you can do for your fish is lots of big water changes. At very minimum 50-80% a week, but being overstocked it would be best if you could do this a couple times a week. Then upgrade as soon as you are able :)

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  12 років тому

    Keep up on your water changes :) In some states petco is having their dollar per gallon sale right now so you might want to check out your petco if you live in the states. Otherwise a large plastic storage tub also works as temporary housing until you can get a larger tank :)

    Also, sponge filters alone are not very sufficient for goldfish aquariums, especially with big tanks. I'd recommend you getting a Hang-on-back filter like an Aquaclear filter. Or better yet, a canister filter. For HOB filters, we recommend at least 10x gallon of your tank volume per hour, and try to shoot for at least 6-7 times for canister filters. For example, if your tank is 75g, your filter should at least 750gallon per hour.

    Your best bet are Anubias, Java Ferns and Amazon Swords. I would really recommend Anubias and/or Java Ferns since they are very easy to keep and need low light set ups. Amazon Swords are a little bit more needy since they need nutritious root tabs and medium-high light set ups. Some other plants that might work too are Crypts, Vals, Onion Plants, Java moss,.. live plants tolerance really comes down to the individual fish since some might find it appetizing while others may not.

    goldfish certainly need good aeration, but it is also a water volume and swimming room issue. You need the water volume to keep the water parameters in control, and goldfish grow very large (8-14 inches easily) so they really need some decent swimming room :)

    The 29 gallon is not too bad, especially given their size right now. You did a great job getting them a larger tank, this is much better than the 10 gallon. You will want to upgrade again eventually once they get a bit larger though. It is tough when you are still living with your parents :) I would suggest trying to educate your parents about goldfish. Kokos goldfish is a great site with good info on goldfish care, you can show them articles etc. on there... continued...

    @Imabadspeller You don't need a heater at all. I use one because my house sometimes gets below 70 in the winter and my goldfish were getting lethargic (cooler temps slow down metabolism, which is fine, but it can make digestion slower and activity levels lower, so I use a heater to keep the temp more stable but its not necessary). Pet store employees unfortunately have no idea what they are talking about most of the time when it comes to goldfish.

    Also, whether or not you can keep fancies and single tails together is highly dependent on the fish, I know many who successfully keep fancies and single tails in the same tank. Fancies can be just as quick and aggressive when food is involved ;) And if you have a slower fish there are ways to work around this such as teaching the fish to hand feed or using a tank divider at feeding times to make sure they get their fair share

    probably not, but you can get a large sterilite storage tub for cheap and keep them in that with a filter and airstone until you can get a tank. If you are in the US petco is having their dollar per gallon sale, so it's a great time to get a tank if you can.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  12 років тому

    you can try rearranging the decor and/or removing one fish for a week or two in a separate tank before reintroducing them. If that doesn't work you can also try a tank divider for awhile. Also make sure they have adequate room (30-40 gallons for two fish), fish tend to be more aggressive when overcrowded. The other thing to consider is whether or not the fish being picked on might be sick. Healthy fish will sometimes pick on weak/sick fish.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  13 років тому

    @venomsabrewulf If you follow the 1 inch per gallon stocking guideline you could keep about 20 neon tetras in a 20 gallon tank. Each might weigh 1-1.5 grams. You could also keep a 5 inch goldfish in a 20 gallon tank. While your 20 tetras might weigh a total of 20-30 grams, your goldfish will weigh between 50-70 grams. So, the single goldfish will produce more waste than your tetra stocked tank, thus requiring a higher level of filtration/larger bacterial colony to deal with the waste produced.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  12 років тому

    @kevster95511 Ideally a 20 gallon is best for one goldfish :) If you absolutely cannot get a 20 gallon right now, it is possible to keep one juvenile goldfish (preferably a fancy not a single tail) in a 10 gallon for a limited period of time. It is not an adequate 'forever' home for a fish and goldies can grow quite fast, so expect the need to upgrade in 6-9 months if you are starting with a small (around 2 inch) fish.

  • @tithra33
    @tithra33  13 років тому

    @venomsabrewulf to each their own. I believe good filtration is incredibly important in keeping goldies (obviously along with big regular water changes and pristine parameters). You are correct in that goldfish do not necessarily produce more waste than a fish of equal mass. However, filters are often rated in thinking about tropical stocking guidelines. Goldfish do not only grow lengthwise but grow in width and overall mass, so a fish of equal length as a goldfish will produce less waste.

    You need to either buy a large (at least 30 gallons) sterilite storage tub and house them in that (with a filter and airstone) until you can afford an appropriate tank. In the meantime you need to do daily big (80% or more) water changes to keep the water safe. If you live in the US petco is currently having their dollar per gallon sale. You can get them a 40 or 55 gallon for 40 or 55 dollars! :) it's a great deal.

    Ammonia should be under .5, nitrite under .25 and nitrate under 20 ppm. Test your water regularly and do water changes as needed. He will eventually need an upgrade to a 20 gallon. You can use a large storage tub as temporary housing until you can afford a tank (these are cheap at walmart). In the winter petco will have another dollar per gallon sale which is a great time to upgrade :) A 20 gallon doesn't take up too much more room than a 12 gallon :) Hope this helps. I think you have some time

    I highly recommend the API master test kit. It will be a higher cost up front than test strips but it is more accurate and will save you money in the long run because you get more uses out of it. Then, test your water on a regular basis. This will give you an idea of how often you need to change your water to keep your water safe for your fish. At very minimum you need to change 50-80% weekly regardless of test results. continued...

    You might also show them some pictures or videos of full grown comet/common goldfish, they get very large, many people do not understand just how large they get. Large plastic storage tubs can be used as cheap housing alternatives to a tank if the cost of a large tank is the issue. In the meantime the best thing you can do is provide good water quality for your fish. A good water test kit is a really important tool to have if you want to keep your fish happy and healthy.continued....

    They both has their strengths and weaknesses. Fancies are generally prettier and more beautiful than comets or commons. But because of their unique features like large eyes, long tails and round bodies that cause them more issues like clumsy bumping into things, getting their tails ripped and lead to infections, and swim bladder diseases. Because commons and comets have more streamline body shape, they are less susceptible to these issues, but they were generally less 'cute'.

    @breyergirl247 No, 3 fish in a 20g is quite overstocked. Ideally, you should only have one fish in a 20g tank. 2 in a 20g is possible for a short period of time if the fish are small and you commit to extra water changes (50-80% every 3-5 days) and testing your water regularly, however I don't recommend this. Toxins accumulate very fast in an overstocked tank, which can lead to illness. I would recommend getting a 30-40 gallon tank for your 3 fish (ideally, 40). :)

    The only things you need for circulation for a goldfish tank are a filter(s) and air stone :) If you have both you should be just fine. Veggies should definitely be a big part of their diet. You can really feed most any veggies as long as they have been softened (boiled). The ones I typically feed are any type of dark leafy veggie (romaine/kale/bok choy etc), zucchini, squash, cucumber, peas. Veggies can be fed daily.

    Cichlids and goldfish are two types of fish that seem to be slightly messier than some others. In addition, goldfish kept in tropical temperatures will have a faster metabolism and produce more waste than they would if kept in a more appropriate and cooler temperature. This may also contribute to the belief that they are dirtier than other types of fish when people have not been keeping them in the proper conditions.
