Goldfish surprisingly have a memory. They remember the person that feeds them the most and get very exited once they come nearby which is a cool fun fact:)
So that's why my oranda and my black moore go swim up in front every time I pass by!
That happens to me too with my common goldfish I rescued from a shallow puddle on the side of the road
Lol Same
When I kept gold fish I could just open the lid and they flew to the surface seeking food. I don't know where the 30 second memory myth came from. My fish knew that a hand over the water meant food.
Lol my brother said they had a 3 second memory
Great video. A few tips from a fellow fish keeper:
1. Goldfish require 3 gallons of water per inch of their body. These little one inch goldfish are the most this tank can handle. A happy goldfish is growing goldfish so a 10 gallon won't be nearly enough for long.
2. Cycling takes more than 2 weeks. It requires some kind of food for the bacteria (ammonia). Running the tank for two weeks without adding any food for the bacteria is a plain and simple waste of time. It's better to let the tank cycle after you get fish then to run it without doing anything else. Many chemicals that "add" bacteria are basically worthless for aquariums and can cause the good bacteria to die.
3. Bacteria require a lot of water movement. They'll mainly live in the filter. The good thing about this is that changing the gravel shouldn't hurt the cycle any but changing the filter or rinsing it in tank water (chlorine kills bacteria) can crash the cycle.
4. You never really explained what was so special about a cycle. Basically it's when the fish poop and the poop builds up. This is harmful for the fish but bacteria which live in the filter will "eat" the ammonia and make nitrite. Nitrite is still pretty toxic but that's okay because another kind of bacteria in the filter eats nitrite and makes nitrate. Nitrate is pretty safe.
5. For fancy goldfish it is best to use pellets as genetics make them not take gulping air very well and they can get sick.
6. As for cleaning, the gravel should be vacuumed once a week and 1/2 of the water changed. The filter should not be changed but if it is really dirty then you can rinse it in a bucket of tank water. Be careful that you don't hurt the bacteria, though.
It will take a week if you use QuickStart though
Also remember to thoroughly rise your gravel and decorations before putting them in! Gravel in particular can have a lot of dust in it and will cloud the water. Also a good idea to rinse the bio bag to get rid of carbon dust.
Great tip!
@@epicfantasy So any tank mates for Goldfish?
Love your channel but goldfish can grow up to over a foot long and will outgrow the tank before you know it.
I recommend Molly or Platy fish, they're similar to gold fish, stay small and are just as hardy.
Great comment. You are right. Looks like a bigger tank or I split these goldfish up.
Thanks. :) waiting to see your next weapon builds.
Ark V Not fantails they get around 6 inches maybe 7 to 8 inches, but the common do get that big and grow big fast.
epicfantasy They are fine in that tank for now.
Kelly, they're really not. fancy goldfish require 20 gallons per fish to cope with their massive bioloads (they excrete and respire ammonia - which in a tank this size can poison them very quickly) As well as them actually needing the space to grow and develop properly. Even as babies, they need that space to avoid becoming stunted. Stunting is basically when the skeleton of the fish stops growing & the internal organs continue to grow within the skeleton that's stopped growing- So you end up with the organs of a 8" fantail malformed & compacted into the body of a 3" fish- This is EXTREMELY painful for the fish and usually results in death within the first 1 to 3 years, as this is when goldfish do the majority of their growing.
The largest goldfish recorded was an oranda at 35.3cm long- so yes fancy goldfish can reach over 12 inches in size.
I know these other commenters were just trying to be informative but I feel like perhaps they came across too negative. I enjoyed this video and found it especially relevant seeing as I'm about to rearrange my small snail tank tonight :)
I used to have two feeder goldfish I won as a prize. They started out small but grew really big. In the end I had a 50 gallon tank for the two of them. I still have that tank (and all the other smaller tanks I bought for them) and nearly bought another goldfish at Walmart. It kept looking at me as I walked by. :P I felt guilty for not getting it but I had reasons. A. my budget and B. I wasn't ready for it. Not even sure which storage shed that tank is in or how dirty it is. I do plan to find it and clean it out though. Then fine somewhere to put it. Having fish again would be really nice. - Heidi
Lots of people already mentioned you will need a much bigger tank for 3 goldfish before too long. Couple of other things; you should add dechlorinator to the water before adding it to the tank, not after. Chlorine is extremely harmful to fish and you don't want any in there, ever. Also, if you're cycling the tank without the fish in there, you can't just leave it, you need to add ammonia to feed the bacteria so that colonies will develop. Some people do this by adding a small bag of fish food and letting it rot but it's better to use pure ammonia. Otherwise, there's some good advice here and good luck with your fish!
Great comment. and great advice. THanks!
He didn't rinse the gravel!!
Carlos TMA nooooooooooooooooooo always rinse the gravel
Carlos TMA yup
OMG I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!...........
YEAH HIS GOLDFISH IS GONNA DIE!
Isn't that optional though?
This was actually a pretty good video. I particularly like the part about asking the pet store about how to treat the water. Many books and resources just say to dechlorinate but that's only good if you live in the city. With rural places or if your on a well system it can be very different. My only real issue on the video is about the gravel. The gravel is the primary source for beneficial bacteria. That foam mesh helps but the gravel is still needed. The professionals who don't use gravel actually use acrylic aquariums which is a good medium for bacteria to grow. Glass is a poor medium but its much easier to clean and doesn't scratch nearly as easily.
Gallowglass you have to dechlorinate 👿
Dont know if anyone cares but if you guys are bored like me atm you can stream all the new series on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my gf during the lockdown :)
@Kyson Darren Yup, been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself =)
I must say I do enjoy your channel. Starting this video I saw some things were wrong, but I love that you're taking advice from people instead of getting defensive. I'm glad someone cares about their fish :)
This is perfect aquarium not to big nor small just perfect 👌 good for beginners....
You're an inventor I see now cool
Fish are great man :)
Yep

Wow really useful info!!
The snack that smiles back.
GOLDFISH!!
loved your video I like the way u did it down to earth good teaching 😉
I just got my first fancy Oranda Goldfish today! Named her Rachel ^^ I could only afford a 10 gallon tank for now, but in a few months when she starts to grow bigger I'll get a larger tank, hopefully a 29 gallon one. The filter is on and everything and it's already starting to clear up :) I didn't put too many plants and stuff in there cuz I want her to have as much space as possible. She's about 2 to 3 inches long right now
Wonderful! Enjoy your new pet!
epicfantasy Thanks! I'll upload a video of her ^^
Wow i love gold fish ☺💜
I
Used to watch this channel all the time! Lol
I needed this tutorial months ago but I can start again!!!
Thanks for the info
Good job
gold fish are a pretty dirty fish that get quite large i would recommend having a min of 30 gallons for your first small gold fish and than adding 10 gals for each additional gold fish which means if you want to have 3 gold fish you will want a minimum of a 60 gallon tank with a powerful filtration system. they are honestly not great beginner fish i love fresh water tanks bbut i personally wouldn't touch goldfish with a ten foot pole. Guppies , mollies and platys are much better for a small beginner fresh water aquarium.
THE WORLD 60 gallons for 3 fantails ? I disagree I think a 30 or 40 is plenty of room.
THE WORLD oropabky a 300 gallon will be ok
kelly anderson no 30 or 40 gallons won't be plenty of room 20 gallons per fish
Akasha Coutts 20 for the first 10 for each other additional fish, I have 3 fantails and 40 or 45 gallons would be more than enough room, they are in a 30 gallon and will be in there for a year before I upgrade again. My fish are happy and growing very well , so you do it how you want to and let others do it how they want too..
Akasha Coutts so 60 gallons?
Thank you for the information.
Thanks for this video I thought I was gonna mess up my tank and was gonna waste my money for something that was so obvious
I strongly recommend not keeping goldfish in a tank this size unless you intend to move them to a larger one as they grow. They can grow up to ten inches, live more than ten years and put out huge amounts of waste. They need a lot of space and top of the line filtration along with large and frequent water changes.
Bare bottom is best because they are quite dirty, but they forage and a good idea is to put trays of removable gravel in the tank so they can forage in it and you can remove it for cleaning. It is not aesthetic, but it is best for the fish in terms of their overall health and what makes them happy.
I never thought about the bag water being dirty. Discarding it is something I will definitely do from now on.
you're gonna need a 40-50 for 2 goldfish and an additional 10 for another. so if you wanted 1 more ( 3 ) you will need at least a 60 gallon tank.
Yay, so much fun 🐡 (no goldfish emoji)
you should upgrade your tank size for your goldfish because they can grow to be a 6-9 inches long and put some guppies or tetras in your ten gallon
theRedGoat Yeah, 40 is the minimum for three.
theRedGoat These fantails aren't going to grow a foot long that's a common ..comet or koi your talking about. But fantails usually get too be 6 inches long.
kelly anderson thanks for correcting me, I suppose I should have done more research
Common goldfish CAN grow to be a foot long. I've seen fantails at 8 or 9". Their size varies, but fancies tend to be smaller than single tails.
theRedGoat I'm no expert, I've just never seen a fancy get that big, guess it's possible though.
Good job! Greetings from Italy
Thanks very useful
I didn't cycle my 30 gallon, my five fancy goldfish were in a five gallon but after two months they weren't doing very well in it so I then moved them in a 13 gallon storage bin. I didn't have the money for a tank so the bin was my only option at the time, they started to do a lot better but the water stayed dirty because I was using a five gallon cheap filter that had horrible water flow. After I got the new tank I added all the old water and put the old filter in with the new filter, I'm using two 40 gallon filter systems that have great water flow and put out a lot of oxygen. Its been almost 2 weeks and my fish are doing great, they eat well and are very active they even play with each other some times. Some will say I have to many in that size tank but it's better than what they were in, and I'm thinking about giving the oranda away but I'm keeping my four fantails. If they have outgrown my 30 gallon by next year I will upgrade to a 40 gallon, but that's as big as I want to go and don't really have the room for anything bigger.
Keep the oranda in a 20 long and just give the ca tails away I love orAndas
Or you could just put them in a shallow puddle like I do. They like the air exposure and they look pretty when they dry up. Quick feeding tip: don't
RevItUp 7 bitch
Lovely video I've got cloudy water tank set up wednesday 6 May thank you what size is the tank please thankyou
10 gallons
I love this video
Cool vid, have subbed
Question if anyone can answer. I just started a goldfish tank about four days ago and added a water conditioner because I used tapwater. I did not add any bacteria. The fish are doing fine and cloudiness even cleared up mostly but is it too late to add when I change the water next.? Is it necessary?
One thing is certain. No one in this comment thread can settle on a tank size for ONE goldfish. LoL.
I added my fancy goldfish in right away anyways, they have been in their new tank for 19 days and they are very healthy active and didn't have any problem with the tank not being cycled, i did add 10 gallons of the old water though to the new 30 gallon maybe it helped but idk. Never did cycle any tank I have ever owned, I buy hardy fish when it comes to tropical fish they always did great in a cycles tank. But when I get my 50 gallon next month I think I will get the bacteria to put in just in case ..
kelly anderson beneficial bacteria isn't in the water it's on the decor and substrate and filter media pretty much on any surface of your tank
Wow u have multiple tanks and u don't cycle them, u keep goldfish in a 10 gal why don't u do research unless you were just investing all that money to make yourself fail (I'm overreacting but this irritates me pls do more reaserch
kelly anderson my comets have been in my tank for 8 weeks
I hope you plan to upgrade your tanks to at least 30 gallons per goldfish as they reach their full size. Otherwise, you shouldn't keep them. Even the smallest breeds of goldfish get to 8 inches long it's simply unhealthy and unfair to keep them in such a small tank. That's why I don't have any goldfish, just a betta (don't get me started on the tiny tanks people keep bettas in either)
Regardless, it's at least nice that you know to and promote cycling and testing the water parameters. It's the bare minimum that most people don't even do.
Great comment. You are right. Looks like a bigger tank or I split these goldfish up.
PonderingChibi That's ridiculous I'm not buying a 100 or 90 gallon for a few fantail goldfish, I have 4 fantail's and 1 oranda in a 30 and if they out grow it I'm getting a 40 gallon. I may be giving my oranda away but I'm keeping my four fantails , a 40 gallon would be fine for them.
kelly anderson then your tank will be to over-stocked when your fish grow. Fish are not custom made for your convenience, they're living beings with needs to stay healthy and happy. If you don't like the requirements for caring for your fish well, just don't own any, or pick a kind of fish that better suits what care you can offer.
PonderingChibi I'm giving two away , its 20 gallons for the first goldfish and 10 gallons each for every other goldfish, so a 40 will be fine for 3 fantails.
kelly anderson what's ridiculous there health or happiness it's just simply want they need you should do more research before you get a fish
How often should you add new fish? I've put 2 in for my tank setup as that's what the store told me but no idea when I can add extra (it can hold 8 coldwater ones all told).
hi were did you get filter pump from and how much as i have a small filter pump and it keeps blowing my fish about lol
yes it may be a bit small. but he does water changes and a decent filter. and fish look happy enough.
good video
do you feed your goldfish when you get them like on the day they arrive??
I did, yes
the tutorial was good, but, I would recommend you get those goldfish an 80 gal tank. one goldfish needs 40 gals of space and for every other goldfish, you need to add 20 gals. since you have three, I would recommend an 80 gal tank. keeping them in a 10 gal will stunt their growth and eventually, they will die.
I heard goldfish gets bigger. Im thinking of getting three goldfish. Is that enough for a 20 gallon tank?
your better off geting a 29 or 30 gallon tank with a 40 gallon filter
Hi there , yesterday I save a little goldfish from the fair (I picked up from a pool with another hundred there), so today morning I get an aquarium about 15 liters , filter and a plant . Problem is that I can find that omega for goldfish , just get omega one súper color pellet . Could you recommend me another brand or something instead, I’m trying to become a responsible fish keeper . Thanks
Nice access ! 😂
Hello, I realize this video is over 4 years old but I checked first that you are still active on your channel before commenting. If you don't have to use gravel then do I have to adhere to the "rule of thumb" 1 bag of gravel per size of tank? Could I just put a bit of gravel?
Thank you
Keep well
It's ok to just put a bit. The rule of thumb is for aesthetics. Good luck with the goldfish!
Hello I’m just a beginner. Does the water filter needs to be on 24/7 or certain amount of time? And do I also need air bubble pump for my goldfish?
Depends
On what you have in there
okay, first of all... fantails need 10 gallon each. second of all...this filter is way too weak... whit goldfish, the filtration and the space are both very important factors. overfitrating the tank is actually the best thing you can do, as they are very messy... and a 10 gallon for 3 goldfish, it is simply ridiculous... their growth will be greatly reduce and they will suffer from internal disfonction later in their life. goldfish are suppose to live 20-25 years. It's not in a little 10 gallon that will be achive. I hate to be this type of personne, the negative one... and I don't want to offence anybody. but yeah, I prefer to inform you about the mistakes and bad informations and I trully hope that my comment will help the life conditions of at less one fish. Remember, it's not about the information we are receiving... it's about what we do with it that matter the most.
It's better to use sand instead of stones for 2 important reasons. 1. Goldfish can accidentally choke with a stone. 2. Pieces of food can fall down and rot between the rocks, spoiling the water.
First off goldfish need to be in a bigger tank than a 10 gallon especially 3! 1 goldfish alone should be in a 20 gallon tank, and u should never put the water from the pet store into your tank no matter what!!
So true
Alyssa Villa just stop
I have 4 goldfish in. A 10 gallon tank with 2 snails and two of the goldfish are big and 2 are medium siz3 and there ok
Jonathan Ortiz boi thats fucking abuse, u cant even have 1 goldfish in a tank
Deborah Jones not rude, if thats rude just imagine how the fish feels
If you have water filter do you still need an air pump for oxygen?
Cool Kid I still have an air pump to help circulate the water and extra aeration
I have one goldfish 10 gallon tank with a air bubbler and a filter one thing that I think he left out was that you do need a air bubbler for the tank
I won a goldfish at a festival and all I have is a small ass tank. Any way to create a makeshift tank. I am a minor so I can’t get my own at the store
Do goldfish ever get stressed from being in a tank for many years?
Next time a tip you should wash the bedding before using it Nice video
I have to two goldfish today
Ahh! Contrats! Today is a good day :)
What if you already have fish and just got a new tank? How do you set it up
where can I purchase a filter like the one in the video?
Just about any pet shop. Amazon also sells them. I have a link in the video description if you want the same exact one. Just today I purchased a new one for a larger tank.
I bought gravel but been told should be sand for goldfish! never heard that before and sand cant be easily cleaned, should you not have washed your gravel first though?
Do you use normal water or a special kind of water?
My gold fish liked pellets! And I had a sunken thermometer and he would hit it into the glass when he saw me!
Cool
Do you need any sort of UV lights ?
I would recommend a 20 gallon or larger. Goldfish g get huge. It's recommended 20 gallons for one fancy plus 10 for every extra fish
Why do you wash your gravel and decorations
Love you videos
I noticed that you hold multiple fish in that tank, would it work to have one fish in a five gallon?
Kaiya's crazy Zoo what type of fish, I’m not one for goldfish gallon geeks, soo, if you really need to, 20 litres is fine for one Goldfish, 60 litres for three but only when they are young, then get a good ol pond if you want your goldfish to live a happy life, a really large 170 litre tank is fine for at least 6 juvenile goldfish and 3-4 Really Big Goldfish when grown
Animal Dank Memes ok tnnaks
i have a question do that filter gives a fish air? or replace air pump?
You should test and treat the water you use to replace that which you took out, before you put it into the tank. Way to shock your fish!
What type of water did you use?
Fancy goldfish need 30 Gallons minimum for one, then 10 extra gallons for each fancy goldfish you add to it. So for 3 goldfish you need 50 gallons minimum.
For common goldfish, you need about 150 or more gallons minimum for one, then add 20 gallons for each common goldish you get after that. So for 3 common goldfish, you need a 190 gallon Aquarium.
All goldfish need filters twice the size the tank they are in because of their waste production.
A much better starter fish is a betta. They need 5 gallons minimum, with a low flow filter and a heater so the temperature stays around 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Also, in the video he mentioned the neon gravel. Its not good for fish, and can affect their eyesight or prevent them from resting. So a more natural gravel is needed for any fish
I have the same tank, filter, and three gold fish. I put glass tiles instead
Step 1 get a 40gallon
Step 2 buy some moss balls and other plants
Step 3 buy some quality gravel don't forget a filter
Step 4 ASEMBLE
Step 5 after you put water you will get rid of chlorene with any dechlorenator
Step 6 trow some fish food to grow bacteria (cycling can take up to 2 months)
Step 7 put your fish and boom that's it
Can someone plz answer this, I’m getting two black moors and I have a ten gallon what other fish can go with black moore
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS ! :D YOU ARE AWESOME !
CAN YOU MAKE HELMET MORION PLEASE :D
Make sure you wash the gravel and decor!
Goldfish are a type of carp, right?
Edward Spencer Yes
Edward Spencer no they are related to carp
Edward Spencer no but ur a type of crap gold fish are awesome
devin-978 ps3 They're related to carps
Yes
a little tip is you should rinse the gravel cuz there is sometime bad chemicals that's can easily kill the fish
Like the video. Very informative. My one problem is that gravel is not a good choice of substrate for goldfish because of how much waste they produce, the poop will actually get stuck under there which is really bad. I would recommend a thin layer of gravel or even sand is a good option.
What kind of water do I use I’ve searched but I can never find a solid answer
Often times tap water is fine, but needs to be treated. Do you have a pet store nearby? You can ask them about the local tap water. They will know.
I had goldfish but they got Ick and died. We had to clean the tank every week so it was a bit costly but they were "ok" fish.
Is it necessary to add salt to the aquarium?
good luck with the gold fish but i also recommend guppies
Thanks, I am going to look into guppies. Would be fun. I have a five gallon tank I could use. Maybe that is ok?
Its perfect for a small school but just remember to get a breeding net just in case if u decide to mix males and females in one tank they breed like crazy they lay 5-25 live babies I believe
Ahh! Thanks. To be honest guppies are starting to sound like a lot of fun!
They are the male's are the ones with the most color and the females are the dull ones
You should condition the water before putting it in the tank when doing water changes. Also, that's a really small tank for three goldfish some goldfish can get up to a foot long.
I know im late so sorry about that but, if you feed them flakes they will suck up air and they will maybe get a swimblatter
You did not mention wash bag of filter first before Prime thx
I know this isn't one of your build videos but could you do foam shrines of the divines from Skyrim?
This is a very good video but, PLEASE use Gravel and Please RINSE it first
wonderful! very helpful video. Thank you
I got my fish today and I didn't put any chemicals or anything and they died in less than an hour 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
No chemicals mean you didnt take the chlorine out of the water which is unlivable.
We want more
Vids of your
Goldfish
Buy a bigger filter than you need it will clean way better.
I personally would rather use a substrate like sand because goldfish can ingest gravel that small. don't forget, adult goldfish need at least twenty gallons of water to themselves! maybe you can have a tutorial on building said aquarium...
I was told you should keep comit gold fish with other types and I was also told to clean my tank with salt
what's the name of your filter?
The filter is a Tetra Whisper PF10
