This is the best and most comprehensive guide on set up of a UPS for a NAS that I have come across! Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video!
@@digital_aloha Yes like a printer cable right? As that arrived with my Cyber Power UPS. So i'm guessing that I would connect that to the front of my Synology NAS and then would I need to program this on a system on the NAS to finalise it off? Thanks
Very helpful - thank you! You also answered a very basic question I have been searching for, the USB to RJ45 cable solution for connection of APC to synology. Based on other online resources, I thought I needed to purchase a specific APC with actual USB on rear of unit, at a substantial price increase. Thanks again!
@s.f.6846 You're welcome, glad you liked the video!! Regarding your question, unfortunately no... You'll need to connect through a USB port as far as I know. Hopefully you can figure out a way to clear up a USB port? Good luck!!
Thanks for this video! Is it possible to disable the alarm of the UPS using a software running under DSM? (I know Powerchute does it under Windows, but I don't have a PC)
Great video, thanks 👍🏻. On a 2nd NAS I have here it can’t see the Synology UPS Server. Do I need to plug-in ethernet cables into both ethernet ports on the UPS?
Ive noticed there are issues with Self shutdown when the backup process is going on... is there any way to force it to shut down even if there is a backup going? (Hyperbackup to external USB drive)
Hi, very comprehensive video, thanks. One question, I have a Synology DS920+ and an APC Smart-UPS 1500. On the back of the UPS I have a USB type A port and an RJ45. What can I use to connect it to the NAS? USB A to USB A cable or USB to LAN cable? Thank you.
the battery inside the UPS wont let you discharge the battery below 11volts anyway. so you can actually just set the NAS to shutdown when its low battery. i verified this with a volt meter with the battery and UPS in low battery mode, the battery voltage is around 11.2volts. and UPS only indicate the battery is fully charged once its around 13 volts.
Thanks for the comment. I've been under the impression that having a UPS battery discharge would take it down to zero and damage the battery, so I put in an earlier shutdown of equipment and the UPS itself. We've damaged batteries because of a full discharge at my 9-to-5 job in the past.
@sebastiansapek1534 Good question... I haven't tried this myself (I don't have an ESXi host), but it does look like others have setup ESXi hosts to make use of the Synology UPS server. Here is a link to a post that I found that seems to have gotten the setup working -> www.gooksu.com/2022/01/esxi-7-x-nutclient-to-query-upsmon-on-synology/. Good luck in getting your setup working!!
Thanks for this. Locally none of the APC versions are on the Synology list but I have located a Prolink that is will order that, albeit our unplanned power interruptions are very very rare
Hi IMBlakeley, You're welcome!! I find that many APC units are still compatible even if they aren't on the Synology approved list, but I'm glad you got a Prolink that will work for you. Good luck in getting everything setup!!
Nice video and well explained. I have a question about different NAS solutions plugged to the same UPS: I am getting an APC Pro 900 (540W), to connect router, network switch, a Synology 4bay NAS like yours, a R.Pi 4B NAS (Running Openmediavault, with few drives in an ICY BOX enclosure connected via usb3 to the R.Pi, and other external usb HDDs connected to a powered usb hub that goes into the other R.Pi usb3 port). Connecting all these things to the UPS, can I set up a safe shutdown of the R.pi NAS and its disks from the Synology Control panel, or should I use a different approach like some kind of command line directly from the R.Pi? Any experience with that? Thankyou in advance.
Thanks for the guide! I have two questions 1) If I only have 1 NAS and 1 UPS, does it make sense to enable the option to "Restart automatically when power issue is fixed"? 2) I have my UPS well hidden under the desk. It would be great if I could somehow track the battery % that's left without opening power options and then going into info. Is there any way of adding this information to that floating window that contains information about System Health, Resource monitor etc.?
Hi, great explanation and straightforward demonstration! I have a DS923+ and cyberpower ups, which has the same behavior upon power outage.Basically the NAS will not power off themselves but enter standby mode instead. They just get cut off power as the ups runs out of electricity? I was kinda concerned cuz I thought it would power off itself when I tested it.
How loud is the UPS compared to the NAS? Moreover I read that the APC can smell pretty bad (like a burnt plastic smell). Is that something you can confirm as well?
@skystink, In my experience the UPS only gets a little loud when there is a power disruption and I haven't ran into any burnt plastic smell with any of the APC UPSs that I've owned. Hope this helps?
Seems odd....I have an APC BX1500M and a Synology 920+ and the Synology does not see/recognize the UPS. I am using the enclosed Data Cable/RJ45 to USB that came with the APC UPS. Have you ever seen this issue before? Any suggestions?
I just got it working. I switched the cable to use the USB Port on the back of the Synology and it works great. Not sure why I couldn't get it working with the Front USB Port. I am now using the Front USB Port to run my daily Back-ups on the External USB Drive and everything is working well......Very odd....
Hi Joseph, I haven't ran into that issue before, but it looks like you resolved the problem by using the USB port on the back of your Synology NAS. Glad you figured it out!!

You're welcome!! Thank you for the great feedback on the video. Much appreciated!!
this video helped me a lot, thanks :)
You're welcome!! Happy to hear that the video was helpful!!
Thanks! for the DS1618+ and a Cyberpower UPS would it need to be a USB connection or is it flexible to do an ethernet to ethernet connection?
You're welcome!! You'll need to use the USB connection to manage your UPS. I don't think there is a way to use ethernet.

Thank you for sharing!! Your calm and clear explanation helps heaps!!
@razbakar7889 You're welcome!! Glad the tutorial was helpful!!
Thank you for sharing such complete setup-and-test example: I wish Synology would provide such service !
@mzmaffei You're welcome!! Glad the video was helpful to you!!
Super clear instructions. Thank you for posting :)
Very helpful thanks man
You're welcome!! Glad to hear that the video was helpful!!
Awesome! I'm trying this with my existing Cyberpower UPS. Thanks for the vid! Especially the test with 3 Synologies.
Hi Good Citizen, You're welcome! Hope all works out in setting things up with your Cyberpower UPS.
Thank you for this video mostly informative and clear. Regards
Just a heads up : don't forget to choose minutes (or whatever) on the second drop down menu.
Looking for this comment because I saw that he still had seconds lol. Excellent thank you

Super helpful. Thanks
You're welcome!! Glad the video was helpful.
Great video, could I connect the UPS to the NAS via a regular ethernet cable? I am already using all USB ports on my DS918+. Thanks!
@s.f.6846 You're welcome, glad you liked the video!! Regarding your question, unfortunately no... You'll need to connect through a USB port as far as I know. Hopefully you can figure out a way to clear up a USB port? Good luck!!
Good video. You noted you set up 15 minutes to shudown but the screen showed 15 second(s) would 15 minutes be ok?
Thanks for this video! Is it possible to disable the alarm of the UPS using a software running under DSM? (I know Powerchute does it under Windows, but I don't have a PC)
The best video in this topic!
@markdudov2508 Thanks for the compliment on this video!! Much appreciated!!
Nice job, thank you for all the essentials and no more.
You're welcome!! Glad you liked the video.
Hi....My Synology DS920+ do not incluided the cable USB/RJ45. Where to buy this cable? Thanks
Actually the cable would come with your UPS. Good luck!!
Great Video about Synology NAS & UPS setup. Thanks for this effort. Can you please suggest any alternate UPS other than APC for similar services.
I ordered a apc ups (BE600M1) and it only came with a usb to data cable, not rj50 connection. Do I have to have one?
Great tutorial, thanks!

Good question. I personally haven't found a solution for the scenario you described. If you have please share what you did.

It is not a RJ45... It is a RJ50... It is physically different connector...
I didn't realize that... Thanks for the info on the RJ50 connector!!
can ESXi host be connected to Synology UPS server?

Question - do you connect your network switch to the UPS too? Doesn’t the NAS need to be connected to Wi-Fi at all times for data loss to not occur?
You should connect BOTH your switch and Router to the UPS.
Thanks great instructions!
