my eyes got teary... A lot of times, we chase after material things that we do not need and impress people that does not care about us. At the end, what is true happiness....enough to provide for your love ones.
Mr. Vu is a great man with great story to share with us. I feel like I went to hell, came back to earth alive and keep laughing at myself. I left by boat from Sihanoukville in summer of 1979 after surviving the Khmer Rouge dead camps, ended up in Philippines, came to US in 1981. Most of my family members of twelve did not survive. Only two of us made it alive. Met my wife here in the US. Her family was torn apart back in 1970. Her ants, uncles, and cousins were deported to Vietnam even they were born in Cambodia. We travel to Cambodia and Vietnam every year to do some volunteer works after our retirement now. You look a lot like Cambodian. Thanks for sharing this, Kyle!
Special thanks to Mr. Vu for sharing his story. Special thanks to Tom Nguyen for helping me film some scenes. I highly recommend everyone doing their research and reading up on the Cambodian Civil War, the Khmer Rouge, and Cambodian Vietnamese relations of the past and of the present. The more you know about history, the more you can be informed and understand how and why things are the way they are. And of course, as always, thank you for watching. More Vietnamese stories in Cambodia to come.
Kyle this is why I love your videos. You listen so carefully and patiently when others share their stories. Not only do you lend a listening ear you also really care!! This video and several others where you assist estranged family members with reunification just blow me away. You are a true humanitarian, it's your gift. Thank you for sharing these critical history lessons.
Here in America we complained about trivial stuff while Mr.Vu and countless other are happy with their daily bread and a roof over their heads ! Blessings upon Mr. Vu and family !
It was the ClA that backed Pol Pot, it was the American and French wars that started this pain and suffering and it was the European racist process of invading, subjugating POC and colonialism that began it all...
I laughed at Kyle saying "I guess I dont look Vietnamese" because ive seen Vietnamese people come in about 100 different variations and colors 😂. Reminds me of people in the Blakans / Caucasus region saying they are white but they look like they could be from Riyadh. Humanity has no blueprint when it comes to how you look based on where you come from.
Great portraiture of Mr. Vu. He must be proud to have his story told. What a strong guy. I remember those times so vividly. After leaving the South Vietnamese to their fate, and indiscriminately bombing the hell out of Cambodia, America was well aware of the horrible genocide occurring, and lifted not a finger to deter it.
I came to Canada to do my PhD and have found out that there are many Vietnamese people originated from Cambodia living here too. I watched a few videos of yours before but don't know that you have a great story to tell. I really respect your efforts to film and edit documentaries like this so I can learn about many untold histories.
I love hearing from people like Mr. Vu. A real person that went through real hardships and came out with a real smile. This what a real human being is all about. Really touched me. Thank you Kyle!
I love Mr.Vu's positive attitude and outlook on life. He doesn't dwell on the things he doesn't have and finds happiness even in the smallest things. I love how he is happy with just being able to get by. Kind of makes you feel like you should also appreciate the small things in life and make the best of what you have. Great video, Kyle!
Mr.Vu's story brought tears to my eyes. He has been through so much but still retained a sense of humor and the love for humanity. Mr.Vu, if you read this, I want to say that I love you too, and wish you all the best for the rest of your earthly life.
the guy told one hell of a piece of History, you can tell he's been throug alot, at least he know's he's poor & that's his fate, but he's happy. Excellent Vlog!
OH IM SOOOOO GLAD IVE FOUND THIS! I love listening to stories like that, like real life stories from old people, and I surely could keep on watching a whole 1 hour video like that. Good job!
Brilliant video put together Kyle. Unfolding the lives of ordinary people, as their stories deserves to be heard. I've been following your videos for quite some time, as it provides me with level of connection to my ethnic background, as I'm really missing Vietnamese food, culture, people living in Spain.
It sad story and poor people around the world they love their families very much love them all thank you for sharing your beautiful story thank you. Bless you all.
Kyle, you videos featuring personal stories, told from perspective Viets/Cambodians awesome. Unlike other travel docs, told from point of view of people who neither know nor care about the history of these people. Thumbs up and subscribed.
Many Chinese people settled in Cambodia dating way back. In the states you can meet quite a few Chinese-Cambodians. My uncle by marriage is Chinese and all of his family speak Khmer. Many Chinese-Cambodians I have met besides my relatives have the last name "Lim"
@Kyle, I think you're heading in the right direction by focusing on the stories about people than mainly about foods. You have the talent of bringing people's precious memories and experiences to life again which are vastly more interesting than tourist sceneries and consumptions. Congratulation, your vlogs have move up another notch.
The human spirit which strives to survives under the most horrific conditions is just remarkable. Thanks Kyle for sharing Mr. Vu's story. Also, I was laughing when he told you he thought you are Cambochia, reminds me of one of your earlier videos with Nina.
Mr Vu is right. When Pol Pot came into power, he ordered all urban civilians to leave their homes in town and get marching on foot to the country side. Main purpose of the march is to do farming so that everybody produce food. Pol Pot have he backing of China. However even though the Pol Pot regime was repressive to its local opponents, what seem to be strong came crumbling like a house of card. Pol Pot was attacked by the vietnamese, without the help of China, was defeated easily without much fighting. As for Mr Vu, I have great respect for him. A simple man at the wrong place at the wrong time, manage to get by with his honest trade. A man much alike Asians, who eats what he sow, find happiness with the little he have, and still came out in good health.
Wow, excellent video. Thanks for sharing this special story. I can tell more time and effort was put into this than your other videos. The filming, opening of video, the narration of history and his story was nicely done, well done putting this together.
Love Mr Vu ... Simplicity in happiness. Sometimes we are making our short life too complicated and make us unhappy even we have money. Vietnam and Cambodia have a bitter history together. There are a lot of Cambodians in Vietnam. History cannot be erased but I hope we can live in peace and harmony together.
Mr. VU is correct, the first time I saw your youtube channel I thought you were Combodia. I can understand and related to him. My family's walk from Vietnam to Combodia during the same time and we're capture by Khmer Rouge. Finally to US in 1986.
I love these intimate new videos kyle. they give such insight of the true everyday south east asia. I am a displaced refugee. its interesting to piece together my past. thank you! keep up the great work! So inspired by ur kindness. may GOD guide your path n lead u to paradise. take care bro : )
Kyle again Thanks for doing what you are doing. You have an innate ability to draw out from people their spirits. The essence of who they really are not just what we see on the surface. Again you have impressed me with this video.
Good stuff Kyle. Interesting to get the background of one of those hard working TukTuk drivers. I presume he spoke to you in Vietnamese. As you say many of these people have stories to tell. Wasn't aware his vehicle comes from India but makes sense. Imagine supporting a family on $300 a month. We are so lucky.
First time viewer. Great video. Agree totally that everyone has a story - some have many stories. I really appreciated the questions and hearing Mr. Vu's perspectives on happiness. Respect to Mr. Vu and Kyle! I'd much rather watch videos like this than 99% of the trash TV companies serve up.
I heard stories similar like his from different ethnic group who lived in Cambodia before the war. My father is a good friend of a hairstylist. Her family came to Cambodia for work from Vietnam before the War.
Mr Vu very interesting life and after all that i guess he did alright for himself so I would call him a winner for sure..Yes very hard life but he has a success story and im sure many more to tell if someone wants to listen and maybe get some words of wisdom ....Thanks for sharing and great video...
I like that you’re videos are evolving towards peoples story. Love hearing peoples life story, his story is heartbreaking but inspiring. God bless Mr.Vu! By the way you look Filipino to me 😂 you remind me of my nephews😂
whos going to marry kyle?, MAYBEEE some poor ass girl from the country side, but then again that gurl would only marry because she would want to move to US, but kyle is a cheap ass

KhmerAmeric Mr T thanks for sharing your side of story! Also u def have to write down u and ur family's story. Best to your family:)
Where do you live now?
It was too emotional even to think about it. I tried some short manuscript to share with my children .
Minnesota, USA. Savi, you are from PA, right?
Why were they deported? Were they not offered refugee status?
Special thanks to Mr. Vu for sharing his story. Special thanks to Tom Nguyen for helping me film some scenes. One of your best videos...thanks
yes it is!
Everytime i hear of Vu....i think of Tom Vu...the fraudulent California real estate infomercial guy back from the early 90s.
isn't it Tom Vo?
all time quote from Tom Vu " " People often ask me...'is this another get rich quick scheme?' I say of course it is... who wants to get rich slow"
Kyle this is why I love your videos. You listen so carefully and patiently when others share their stories. Not only do you lend a listening ear you also really care!! +Lori Lewis I'm actually going to the wedding of one of the estranged family members I reunited this weekend!
Here in America we complained about trivial stuff while Mr.Vu and countless other are happy with their daily bread and a roof over their heads ! Blessings upon Mr. Vu and family !
Angel Marcano I couldn’t agree more
It was the ClA that backed Pol Pot, it was the American and French wars that started this pain and suffering and it was the European racist process of invading, subjugating POC and colonialism that began it all...
@@reggieangus5325 forgot to mention China was the one that funded and supported the genocidal Pol Pot everything.
This is a great video for many reasons.
1)Has a character
2)Has a storyline
3)History
4)Food
5)Narrative
6)Documentary
Nothing wrong with looking Cambodian bro. Great video!

H. Town You sound bitter. Did Kyle hook up with you and never called back?
H. Town lol why so much resentment.... but funny phrased... kyle give him credit for that
What are you doing here? Don't you have a really long banh mi to eat or something?? (burn)
Hilarious and stunned when the man tells him he doesn't look Vietnamese . I would have guessed the same or Filipino
Yeah as Filipinos we get a range of looks some of my family looks Khmer Vietnamese sometimes Chinese or Malay and Indonesian
He's right, you looks more Cambodian than Vietnamese 😆. Adore him, he's so modest and honestly, oh poor him , he's alone;, no family ( no wife ).
Thank you 💜
