RN It was great but not sure if it was the best (in terms of the level design anyway). Banjo Kazooie/Tooie beat it hands down. In general the blocky polygons of the N64 games haven't aged well at all.

By one hour in you had about 1 star per minute of play. When I first played this on my N64 at around age 8 I think it took me an hour to get my first star. Wow.

That's what I love about Mario Games. They may not look like it, but these games are competitive! They have tons of secrets and helpers to help Speedrunners who take their time learning the levels. That's true for almost every Mario game! I love that Nintendo took such a solid, simple concept and added so much to it.
It's sad this new generation won't get to experience gaming like we did. We started from atari and now have ps4. Every time a new game system came out through the years we got to watch the graphics evolve right before our eyes. I got a 64 the day it came and played the hell out of it.
