Briatore is a highly intelligent person, who has twice built Team Enstone up to win championships. Yes he is controversial for rather obvious reasons, and very understandable why people aren't happy about his return, but he has that win at all costs attitude and strong leadership required to succeed. Very clear to see why Alpine want him. Twice, he built the team around a young world class driver. He also knew he has no technical knowledge, so he hired many top class engineers. Calling the move absurd is beyond me. He may have done some questionable things in the past but this doesn't alter his accomplishments. In addition: all big team bosses did a few odd things. Remember 2019 when Binotto made that agreement with the FIA about their engines. Nobody ever knew what exactly had happened. If Alpine performs better again after him joining, it is the right decision.

I remember during their IPO that Ferrari said that being in F1 was worth $500m a year in advertising. Even if you say that Renault's results mean it gets 1/3 of that value that's still about the budget cap. So they may essentially be getting an F1 team for free on money they would otherwise have to spend on marketing.
The race called it a major “inditement” to consider binning their old engine. Why? Not like they are sticking their F1 engine in road cars, they have a consistently bad engine…. McLaren make their own cars and are a customer team kicking ass but apparently it’s okay for them lol
I think their only reasoning is that you can customize the duct-work and mechanical output as a part of the car, rather than designing the car around the mechanical. As you said though, McLaren is doing just fine.

Alpine have performed well, given where they started the year. They scored points with both cars in Barcelona, and Gasly would've finished ahead of Checo, had he not had a 5+ second pitstop. Don't forget that not all that long ago, McLaren had the slowest car on the grid and have managed to turn things around in less than a year. And nobody is expecting Alpine to make a similar jump, but they've shown promise and potential, with Occon finishing inside the points with an overweight chassis, in a race that saw zero retirements, on the most technically challenging circuit of the season.

The thing I don’t understand is why no one is reacting to RBR’s inverse crash gate in Canada. RBR did the exact same as Benetton (put drivers and track workers at risk to manipulate the outcome) and they get a 3-place grid penalty while two guys get “life” bans. I think the problem with Andretti buying Alpine would be that all they really want/need from Alpine is the entry, they have their own facillities under construction in the US (plus that small base in Silverstone), they have their own technical team. While maybe some of the race day team could remain, a lot of people would probably lose their jobs and it would be the end of Team Enstone.
So capable hes willing to tell a driver to crash on purpose and nearly bringing the entire team down with him instead of building a car that's capable of winning. At this level of sport, that's unacceptable. And rightfully so.... Its by far the biggest scandle in F1 history, probably the biggest stain on the sport that's still having reprocussions to this day. Massa is still causing issues about that championship, Lewis is still dealing with people questioning the legitimacy of that years Championship, and F1 suffers every time its brought up. He only orchestrated F1s lowest moment in recent history....
What does Renault need? Someone who knows how to make F1 business decisions on personnel, strategy and future plans. Briatore brings all of this to the table. Bringing him aboard therefore isn't as absurd as The Race is making it out to be. Ironically, I think, Briatore might be the only way to safe the Renault/Alpine F1 project.
Flav can spot Alpine problems from a distance of 1000km and he won't even need glasses. In spite of useless rants Flav is a highly accomplished F1 team principal.

Why all the alpine slander? Sure, they are dislikable and an easy target. But to go from HARD, CLEAR last, to just about top 5 teams in less than half a season, DESPITE a nugget of an engine is impressive. Their car must be incredibly aerodynamically efficient, and their development has been swift and effective. They havent had a bad upgrade, and have shown linear improvement. Once again, this feels like the F1 press interpolating false truths.

I generally think your videos are excellent, but here The Race comes off as agitated and angry rather than just giving us the facts. The news IS bizarre - that cannot be denied - but the tone of the commentary, and video in general is rather surprising, especially in comparison to the usual first rate content. The only conclusion that I can take from this is that Renault was probably supporting whatever Briatore did during the crashgate. He took the fall, they waited and rewarded his "loyalty".

The main problem for this team is its lack of commitment. They have yo-yoed back and forth for years now. Running a team, selling the team, to running the team again, rebranding the team. It seems to me that for years they have wanted immediate success and when things are going badly, they run around like headless chickens, fearful of the negative image to the Renault brand, so they sell or rebrand and unwilling to ride out the bad times, instead blaming mismanagement at team, other teams spending more etc. Instead of just bringing on a talent group of individuals, that know how to run a F1 team, trust in that process and ride through it. At this point in time, they could salvage some brand image, by saying they are focusing their efforts on new ruleset, as specifically the new engine rules are intriguing for future technology in their family Renault cars.

I don’t see why it would be “crazy” to use another engine. Sure, Mercedes dominated for 7 years, but besides that, has there been a clear benefit to building your own engine over the last couple decades? McLaren seems to be doing just fine right now, and RedBull have been doing well the last few years and in 2010-13. Perhaps Renault should see what engine RB were using back then.
Im a newbie to the sport, so feel free to scream at me and teach me a lesson down here, but I think that’s a bit too critical. I know the success was 20, 30 years ago, but Briatore knows how to win *properly*. I don’t think that 1 incident literally throws his reputation out the window. Of course, it’s tainted, but saying it’s a massive L by Renault/Apline to bring in someone who has proven motorsport and F1 management pedigree and successful ones at that, as an advisor to your struggling F1 team, is a bit much. I suspect people are trying to manifest in their head, a takeover by Andretti.
Manipulating a crash in order to get a win in an unsportsmanlike manner is not an "incident" as you say. This is akin to football players getting involved in match fixing schemes and Briatore should suffer the consequences of his actions and stay far away from the sport as possible, not to be accepted back as a Messiah.
There's nothing Absurd according to me by bringing in Flavio, when Ron Dennis was found guilty of copying Ferrari in 2007 which is famously dubbed as 'Spygate' nothing was done and when ethically bankrupt Horner still leads Redbull nothing was done, then why shouldn't Flavio after 15 years of hiatus or ban or whatever you'd like to classify it as. The pressure of winning is immense in Formula One, under that pressure team bosses have cracked and made decisions which were questionable and condemnable, you can't have angels running this sport neither they were any in the past, famously Collin Chapmen of Lotus was known to make lighter and structurally weaker cars to win which costed Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt and scores of other drivers their lives. It is still debated and a majority of the fans still believe it was steering column that broke on Ayrton Senna's car that day at Imola, but Frank Williams was untouched and so was Adrian Newey. That is the bottom line reality of Formula One, it's dark and yet it is spectacular. I just hope Flavio gets Mick Schumacher back to pair it up with Pierre Gasly.

Didn't know it was actually not appealed anymore, so I was still in the assumption that he wasn't allowed to work in F1. I have no idea what Flavio is doing back there (or anywhere really). I have a lot of respect for Otmar Szafnauer. He knew how to run a race team, but didn't have the cajones to point the finger at Viry-Châtillon (and Bruno Famin), where the obvious issues lie. OEM's join F1 as advertising as showing expertise (amongst other reasons). What advertisement is it, that a car manufacturer can't build it's own engine and has to use another.

Calling the move absurd is beyond me. He may have done some questionable things in the past but this doesn't alter his accomplishments. In addition: all big team bosses did a few odd things. Remember 2019 when Binotto made that agreement with the FIA about their engines. Nobody ever knew what exactly had happened.
If Alpine performs better again after him joining, it is the right decision.
At this point I pretty much want Renault to leave F1. And ideally never return. Bunch of clowns.

I remember during their IPO that Ferrari said that being in F1 was worth $500m a year in advertising. Even if you say that Renault's results mean it gets 1/3 of that value that's still about the budget cap. So they may essentially be getting an F1 team for free on money they would otherwise have to spend on marketing.
Renault have been down on power for years now. How is this consideration even a downgrade when a customer team is currently at the front of the field.
The race called it a major “inditement” to consider binning their old engine. Why? Not like they are sticking their F1 engine in road cars, they have a consistently bad engine…. McLaren make their own cars and are a customer team kicking ass but apparently it’s okay for them lol
I think their only reasoning is that you can customize the duct-work and mechanical output as a part of the car, rather than designing the car around the mechanical. As you said though, McLaren is doing just fine.

Alpine have performed well, given where they started the year. They scored points with both cars in Barcelona, and Gasly would've finished ahead of Checo, had he not had a 5+ second pitstop. Don't forget that not all that long ago, McLaren had the slowest car on the grid and have managed to turn things around in less than a year. And nobody is expecting Alpine to make a similar jump, but they've shown promise and potential, with Occon finishing inside the points with an overweight chassis, in a race that saw zero retirements, on the most technically challenging circuit of the season.
McLaren has been in the slump trying to turn it around for almost a decade-not just last year to now netflix boy.

The thing I don’t understand is why no one is reacting to RBR’s inverse crash gate in Canada. RBR did the exact same as Benetton (put drivers and track workers at risk to manipulate the outcome) and they get a 3-place grid penalty while two guys get “life” bans. Perhaps both penalties were too extreme in both directions? Why is no one challenging this?

I think the problem with Andretti buying Alpine would be that all they really want/need from Alpine is the entry, they have their own facillities under construction in the US (plus that small base in Silverstone), they have their own technical team. While maybe some of the race day team could remain, a lot of people would probably lose their jobs and it would be the end of Team Enstone.

Exactly, he is a very capable person which is what alpine needs.
So capable hes willing to tell a driver to crash on purpose and nearly bringing the entire team down with him instead of building a car that's capable of winning. At this level of sport, that's unacceptable. And rightfully so.... Its by far the biggest scandle in F1 history, probably the biggest stain on the sport that's still having reprocussions to this day. Massa is still causing issues about that championship, Lewis is still dealing with people questioning the legitimacy of that years Championship, and F1 suffers every time its brought up. He only orchestrated F1s lowest moment in recent history....

What does Renault need? Someone who knows how to make F1 business decisions on personnel, strategy and future plans. Briatore brings all of this to the table. Bringing him aboard therefore isn't as absurd as The Race is making it out to be.
Ironically, I think, Briatore might be the only way to safe the Renault/Alpine F1 project.
Flav can spot Alpine problems from a distance of 1000km and he won't even need glasses. In spite of useless rants Flav is a highly accomplished F1 team principal.
It's a good appointment, Alpine need someone like briatore to bring some leadership and competence to the team. He has had decades of success in F1.

Why all the alpine slander? Sure, they are dislikable and an easy target. But to go from HARD, CLEAR last, to just about top 5 teams in less than half a season, DESPITE a nugget of an engine is impressive. Their car must be incredibly aerodynamically efficient, and their development has been swift and effective. They havent had a bad upgrade, and have shown linear improvement.
Once again, this feels like the F1 press interpolating false truths.
I think the presenter who is making such a deal about it should realise that not everyone shares his opinion - even convicts from prison get a second chance
Why does it seem that none of these insight videos mention the huge increase in F1 and therefore team revenue, and join the dots between that and the fact that Haas and Renault seem quite happy to sit in the mid to rear of the grid, and are not interested in selling. Has F1 turned from being a money pit into a cash cow?

I generally think your videos are excellent, but here The Race comes off as agitated and angry rather than just giving us the facts. The news IS bizarre - that cannot be denied - but the tone of the commentary, and video in general is rather surprising, especially in comparison to the usual first rate content. At least personally I appreciate your channel for the balanced and level headed views that give us the whole picture and this update seems slightly off.

The main problem for this team is its lack of commitment.
They have yo-yoed back and forth for years now.
Running a team, selling the team, to running the team again, rebranding the team.
It seems to me that for years they have wanted immediate success and when things are going badly, they run around like headless chickens, fearful of the negative image to the Renault brand, so they sell or rebrand and unwilling to ride out the bad times, instead blaming mismanagement at team, other teams spending more etc.
Instead of just bringing on a talent group of individuals, that know how to run a F1 team, trust in that process and ride through it.
At this point in time, they could salvage some brand image, by saying they are focusing their efforts on new ruleset, as specifically the new engine rules are intriguing for future technology in their family Renault cars.
It’s fascinating how you all are keeping it real with Alpine. Clearly nobody in that circle is “buttering your bread.”
to be fair , Alpine suddenly got points after his announcement. I love Flavio , he brings more Italianess than Ferrari on the grid and off the grid as well. There is a reason why he won 4 world championships with arguably the 2 best drivers in the last 30 years more or less.

I don’t see why it would be “crazy” to use another engine. Sure, Mercedes dominated for 7 years, but besides that, has there been a clear benefit to building your own engine over the last couple decades? McLaren seems to be doing just fine right now, and RedBull have been doing well the last few years and in 2010-13. Perhaps Renault should see what engine RB were using back then.
Yet McLaren is very close to winning the constructor's championship this year as a customer team. Something Ron Dennis deemed it impossible.
Im a newbie to the sport, so feel free to scream at me and teach me a lesson down here, but I think that’s a bit too critical. I know the success was 20, 30 years ago, but Briatore knows how to win *properly*. I don’t think that 1 incident literally throws his reputation out the window. Of course, it’s tainted, but saying it’s a massive L by Renault/Apline to bring in someone who has proven motorsport and F1 management pedigree and successful ones at that, as an advisor to your struggling F1 team, is a bit much. I suspect people are trying to manifest in their head, a takeover by Andretti.
Manipulating a crash in order to get a win in an unsportsmanlike manner is not an "incident" as you say. This is akin to football players getting involved in match fixing schemes and Briatore should suffer the consequences of his actions and stay far away from the sport as possible, not to be accepted back as a Messiah.
There's nothing Absurd according to me by bringing in Flavio, when Ron Dennis was found guilty of copying Ferrari in 2007 which is famously dubbed as 'Spygate' nothing was done and when ethically bankrupt Horner still leads Redbull nothing was done, then why shouldn't Flavio after 15 years of hiatus or ban or whatever you'd like to classify it as.
The pressure of winning is immense in Formula One, under that pressure team bosses have cracked and made decisions which were questionable and condemnable, you can't have angels running this sport neither they were any in the past, famously Collin Chapmen of Lotus was known to make lighter and structurally weaker cars to win which costed Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt and scores of other drivers their lives. It is still debated and a majority of the fans still believe it was steering column that broke on Ayrton Senna's car that day at Imola, but Frank Williams was untouched and so was Adrian Newey.
That is the bottom line reality of Formula One, it's dark and yet it is spectacular.
I just hope Flavio gets Mick Schumacher back to pair it up with Pierre Gasly.

Here we go again: "The Race" imperial necessity to bash Alpine and Renault. Of course, that would never happen if it was a British team. They only have positive things to say about Williams, even if the team is grossly under performing. If Alpine is a "beleaguered team", what about Sauber, Williams and Haas who are behind in the constructor standing? When Alpine fires somebody (particularly if it is a Brit), it is a terrible decision. If they hire somebody, it is an awful decision. It is hard to take this channel seriously. All the journalists are British and they have a tunnel vision of F1.

@ColinVIP Yeah I know, that's the whole issue I'm having here with this. The FIA made such errors during the tribunal which caused it to be overthrown. Didn't know it was actually not appealed anymore, so I was still in the assumption that he wasn't allowed to work in F1. But in the end he was in on the scandal and now him being back at F1 is just so bad for the image of F1. And at Alpine even too....

I was at the race in Singapore in 2008. It was an incredible race. I stayed in the Mandarin Hotel.

I have no idea what Flavio is doing back there (or anywhere really). I have a lot of respect for Otmar Szafnauer. He knew how to run a race team, but didn't have the cajones to point the finger at Viry-Châtillon (and Bruno Famin), where the obvious issues lie. The power / engine division is where the axe should have fallen. Not all the aero, performance, strategy peeps that jumped (or were pushed).
Aston Martin and McLaren use Mercedes-AMF engines... Aston, soon to use Honda emgines... so, how would it be odd for Apline/Renault to switch another engine...
