I have a much faster way to clean your filters. Fill your sink up with very very very hot water. I boil my kettle and use the hot water from there. To that add a quarter of a cup of Borax. Let it sit there for about 15-30 minutes. After soaking for the suggested time, put on a pair of thick rubber gloves and drain the sink. Rinse your filters under warm water, they should be sparkling clean. If you like or need, you can do a second application. I guarantee this will have your filters looking like they are brand new. Best part is there’s no elbow grease involved. Give it a try, you’ll be glad you did.
I was glad to find these directions as we had never cleaned our 9 year-old range hood filters..I used a pan and dishwasher detergent and it took more than 1 application//rinsing, etc., but I now have clean filters. What a difference! Thank you Justin.
Straightforward presentation without gimmickry. Just what the doctor ordered. You are a great presenter with a nice chilled approach. 35 thumbs up to 1 thumb down is one of the best thumb tallies out there. Thanks for a great video Justin. Try another one sometime.
I just bought a house and noticed drips on the stove top. The screen filters were (are) pretty bad. This is one of the better videos I found on UA-cam. You just saved me $25 for replacements. Thank you.
It's not as powerful as I thought it would be, but it works very well. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGjG43--gYqIoT4Xkur2PqCrtbKwTv2h There are three options to circulate air, and best of all a remote control for us lazy people. Installation was a breeze (no pun intended). It actually took longer to open the box then it did putting the side extenders on and sitting it in the window opening. It's a perfect alternative when you want airflow, but not the AC. Just might order another one for a different room. UPDATE: Bought another one like I said. They work great. Why not have two...
Great information about this product. I'm glad to have found this video. One thought, the drains might accumulate the grease and for those that have septic systems, this amount of grease might that up too, so it might be best to do it outside on the lawn or somewhere similar.
*Works amazingly **Fastly.Cool** . I love all the features and the double expansion. For once a fan is almost as tall as my window. Updated but not overly fancy.*
WOW!!! I'm going to try this. Thank you for owning you've never cleaned that for a decade. I thought I was the only one. I hate when a video says here's how to clean years kitchen grease. N their stuff was hardly dirtly. Thanks again for telling your truth!!👍👍
I just wanted to mention, if you take your filter, put it in your cookie sheet, then spray it with heavy duty oven cleaner, leave for 15 minutes, give it a scrub with the toothbrush, it will all come off without etching the filter. Also, you can do the same method and use Simple Green or Pine Sol, leave it in it over night and all the grease will be separated from the filter by morning. Also, just a tip, scrub the filter a bit before you rinse with water, this loosens up everything and more will come off. Simple Green all purpose cleaner and Pine Sol also work for stripping paint off plastics without ruining the plastic underneath. I use these cleaners to strip paint from plastic model kits that have been painted by a child and the result is a fresh, out of the box model kit. Cheers
IT WORKS! I covered front and back, waited 30 minutes, ran HOT water over them and they were very clean. I did see a TINY BIT of residue deep inside, so I ran HOT water in the sink, added the Palmolive and let it soak about 15 minutes! Done! They looked brand new! Thanks for sharing this method!
Bro!!! Why did I not ever do this before??? I have cleaned those with all sorts of things for days on end and never got the results I got in 10 minutes with this method!! You are a god.
Just tried it. Works fantastically well. I saturated just one side and let it soak for a couple hours while I ran some errands. You could see the difference even before rinsing. I laid it in the sink and blasted it good with hot water from the sink sprayer. It got almost every single bit. Looks about 99% new. And no suds or soap mess to deal with at all. Thank you very much.
I was an apartment repair man. Sometimes it is impossible to find a replacement range hood filter that fits if the range hood is very old. Custom ones can be made to fit but that's expensive. Just put the filter in a broiler pan outside and flood it with ammonia. A few hours later rinse it out and it will look almost new.
Thank you so much for sharing this! This work unbelievably well! This has been my go to way to clean my exhaust fan filters and it's so satisfying when all the burnt grease just comes off so easily. The same method works well for other things as well, like oven racks and such. I have been using your method for years, but today while being amazed how easily dirt comes off my oven racks, I remembered I should thank you. So thank you, thank you, thank you!
It worked! Thank you. Now I have a clean replacement filter whenever the new one gets dirty again. Simple dishwashing detergent really breaks down the grease.
I bet your exhaust fan is happier and quite a bit more quiet!!!! I like filling up the home depot orange buckets with hot water ammonia dawn dish detergent. Then let the filters sit in the solution for a couple of hours. I'm in no hurry. Nice job.
Fantastic presentation. I really like this method and cheap to do it. Can you also make one more presentation on gow to clean oven trays and oven. Many tanks and Gos bless.
I done the same method outside in the garden used boot tray to soak it in dishwasher detergent. It worked perfectly well with out worry of clogging drains
Thank You for sharing the information to clean the filters. My exhaust fan manufacturer is no longer in business and can't buy filters no where because of the odd size and I had to have them made and it was very expensive. So I definitely will be trying your helpful information.
I have my own cleaning business And I clean these things all the time they’re very easy to clean. All you need is very hot water and 2 tablespoons of Oxsee clean you soak it for about a minute or 2 agitated a little bit in the sink and it comes out just as clean as the video. Clean smart not hard.
OMG!!!!! And that’s a praise and blessing to you! It worked just like you said! I had soooo much grease buildup on them-stuck down in oxy solution and it immediately dissolved! NO scrubbing at all- just rinse and wiped a little residue on rim-they look like brand new and took less than 2 minutes! SO glad I looked at the comments!

Those filters are exactly the same as some in some military equipment and we just put them in a dishwasher on a hot cycle and they cleaned up perfectly every time.
I was so frustrated, as you said, I tried oven cleaner, liquid soap, boiling water, nothing worked, you nailed it, thank God I saw your video, and of course thank you.
Now, those of you folks that have a G.E. SpaceSaver Under-the-Counter Microwave oven - above that filter is a plastic grille. From the outside, the grille sits just above the door. It has two clips that press-fit into slots. There are only 2 screws holding it. Screw those out and the grille should pop right out with little coaxing. Cleaning this grille in situ is a bear. You must to remove it and set it in a basin where you can scrub it. Justin's method also works for that. I added a another step - CAREFUL - I use boiling water for each rinse after I worked the grilles over 3x with a stiff-bristle plastic hand brush and dish soap, like he did. I never had success before, but this came out nice. I considered setting them out overnight in an ammonia bag, but I didn't know how ammonia would affect the plastic grille, so I opted for this method because dish soap is safe.
Another thing to try is spray on oven cleaner(lye soap). However it may be hard on the aluminum. The dishwasher detergent method may be the best, it looks great in this video. It's great seeing people reuse stuff instead of throwing away. This filter is aluminum metal, made to be cleaned and reused over and over again.
Thank you for your video. You are concise and well spoken. This method worked out great on our exhaust fan filter. We had the powder dishwasher cleanser, so we made a paste out of it & that worked out well too. It only took two tries.
Lye and warm water worked like a charm for me. No scrubbing required. And it only needed a 2-minute soak... even for a filter that hadn’t been cleaned in 12 years.
Wonder if that detergent messed up the aluminum on the edges? Also, a brush made to clean dentures is the greatest tool for scrubbing small things. MIL had a couple of hospital ones in her belongings and the angle and stiffness makes it a great cleaning tool.
Laundry detergent works well especially if you add in some stain remover powder and leave to soak. I usually leave it overnight and the next day everything rinses off. No muscles necessary. Works on pans and oven dishes etc too.
WOW- I just finished cleaning my filters (over 20 years I'm embarrassed to say) I tried Goo-Gone and Kitchen DeGreaser. They did nothing . Then got my Palmolive liquid soap and bingo!!! But I thought I'd check UA-cam out to see if there was even something better. Couldn't believe I went through the same process as you :))) and decided liquid detergent is the best. Now do you have anything for grout? Thanks again.
I appreciate this video for sure. Dawn dishwashing detergent would have decreased the grease dissolved time in my opinion. T'he blue hue is the best too. Love the stuff.
When facing my dirty range hood filters I did a quick search on UA-cam tutorials. I found very little useful information - myths, half-truths, false facts and even intentionally misleading information. The method shown in this video is one of the better ones. Here's my contribution as a chemical engineer: The residue in the filters consists of vaporised oils and fats plus a number of their break-down products. The smelly, sticky goo is made up of a mix of dozens of chemicals, most of which are hydrophobe (= repelled by or not soluble in water). Solution 1: an industrial hydrocarbon based solvent (= degreaser). This is a very harsh method (vapors, flammability, may damage plastic components, not environmentally friendly) Solution 2: Caustic Soda (NaOH) + Fat = Soap! As soap happily dissolves in water this should get rid of the fatty components (Caution: NaOH is a dangerous chemical - protect your hands andd eyes, always add the chemical in small fractions to lots of cold water. NaOH is readily available as drain cleaner) Solution 3: surfactants (make oil, fat and water "mix") and enzymes (break down fats and other organics into smaller molecules). A very powerful product is laundry powder (with or without enzymes), it is optimised to get dirt out of a fine mesh. You can also get biological drain cleaners containing enzymes (quite expensive but environmentally friendly). With enzymes, only use warm water for best results. Solution 4: fancy cleaning products (there are dozens of more or less specialised products on the market which are often overly expensive and not necessarily guaranteed to do the job). Note: with all of the above, higher temperatures (chemical reactions will speed up exponentially), longer soaking times plus a little elbow grease will help the process. Procedure: I prefer Solution 3 - use an adequately sized rectangular bucket, dissolve laundry powder in warm water (you may need 2 or more measuring cups depending on the grease load!), submerge the filters and swash them round for a while. The water will turn brown instantly and the filters begin to shine. Leave them in the solution for at least 30 minutes. Swash around again, brush around the edges if necessary then discard the solution. Rinse at least 3 times or until the water becomes clear. Dry before putting back into range hood. For extremely dirty filters you may have to repeat the procedure or just clean the filters at a shorter interval in the future. If you range hood has an hour counter, 30 to 50 operating hours is a reasonable number. My simplified list is by no means exhaustive but I hope I have dispelled some myths - Happy Cleaning!
It actually Worked. 👍👍👍 Cleaning exhaust filters is a task I really hate and the result is never satisfactory. But with your video it was so easy and hassle free. Best part is that I didn't got sore arm muscles. I didn't use the palmolive dishwasher detergent but used Cascade. That also worked. Thank u so so much .😊😊 All the best for ur future projects. 👍
I have great success with ZEP commercial, all purpose cleaner & degreaser. I use it on many other places that has grease on it. This can be purchased at most any place that sells cleaners like Home Depot. I just spray it on, leave it for a few minutes and I rinse it off with hot water using the kitchen sprayer. I seldom have to use it a second time.
I finally got around to trying your cleaning hack today and I can say I am 💯 happy. Mine looks brand new. It was so easy for me , I didn’t scrub, wet applied set and rinsed. Thanks
Wow cool! Crazy story. I have dishwashing soap, but no dish washer (except me). I kept this DW soap in garage for years. Thought of getting rid of the DW soap (again 2 days ago), but didn't. Glad I came across this video because I need to clean stuff like this. Goes to show, Everything happens for a reason, signs, timing, etc, no coincidences. Plus am frugal...Thanks for sharing Info!
I just put the filter in the lower rack of the dishwasher and start it with the Pots & Pans cycle with regular dishwasher tablet. Works great and easy !
I tried cleaning mine after not cleaning it in 8 years and I broke it. it came out of the sides since they are so delicate. 8$ bought me a pack of 2! :) I'll stick to changing them out
Before the cleaning with the detergent: pour boiling water over it (outside if you can). It loosens the grease and the following cleaning doesn't require as much detergent.
Thank you very much hope your valuable information we have tried all different types of detergent and none of them work I will give this brand of detergent a try.
years ago my husband took our dirty above stove filters like your outside and sprayed them with Engine Degreaser and let them sit for an hour then took garden hose to spray them clean then I wash them with soap and water WOW they were brite Clean NEW after that I would put in dishwasher once a week and they were 40+ years old and still looked like new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can of engine degreaser cost $3.50 spray wait an hour rinse wash with dish soap rinse done took about 1 and 1/2 hour time and $3.50 simple and cheap!!!!!
Hello, Justin. Really great video, dude. I want to clean my Mum's over head filters too, but i cannot find that exact brand of detergent. I am in Australia. I have googled and hit Ebay too. Nothing. How stupid that a common thing like that isn't sold here. Please advise me if you can on something else that will do the same job and is available here in my country? Thank you again for the video.
If you have access to a covered area outside then using essentially the same procedure, but substitute the detergent with neat ammonia solution and brushed into the mesh will also produce amazing results. Make sure area is well ventilated as he ammonia fumes can be overwhelming. NB: be sure to wear rubber gloves!
Only one question. Your filter seems practically see-through... shouldn't there be some filtration material between the inner and outer metal mesh covers?? I'm wondering if after 12-40 years of not being cleaned, the inner material rotted/decayed away, in which case the filter wouldn't actually be filtering small particles. Thanks for the video.
bookguitarguy Vented range hood filter screens generaly are only metal mesh like this one and are meant only to trap grease. Ductless range hoods use screens with an activated charcoal filter to trap grease, smoke and odors since the exhausted air goes back into the room.
I have 2filters in my range hood that I want to clean so thank you for the tip of using the Palmolive dish soap cause I've been buying expensive cleaner so this is definitely worth trying.
Dawn dish soap works a lot better on grease & you'll use less, but thanks for the video, bleach is good to use for those hard to clean filters. Let it soak for a while & rinse very thoroughly
I just did 2 filters at a house I inherited, all I did was dip them in boiling water, & the were clean as a whistle. No scrubbing or anything. Then I dumped the water outside.
I just cleaned mine before finding this video. I used simple green and dawn dish soap outside with a parts cleaning brush. Rinsed with a spray nozzle and Boom, no more grease.
I've tried running these filters through the dishwasher several times with different detergent. Didn't work. Justin's method is next since he's using the soap directly on it without diluting. I wonder if this would work on the stove surface burner grates. Right now I soak them overnight in ammonia in a sealed plastic bag outside, but with the subzero weather we've had I haven't been able to do it. Plus I really hate using ammonia because of the fumes and smell. I'm thinking this method will clean those too. Thanks, Jason!
I was thinking on halfway filling that rectangular tray with water with detergent, put that filter, put it on top of the stove, and let it boil. I think the hot temp would facilitate the old dirty grease removal.
Even quicker cleaning is with Dawn Powerwash. Lay the filter in the sink, give each side a good spray. Let it sit for a minute or two, then a quick scrub with an old toothbrush on each side & rinse. Looks brand new in under five minutes.
Wow 12 years of grease! Although I haven't done mine in 6 months & It's half as bad, probably because I'm a smoker & I'm sure the smoke would also escape through the fan too. Obviously I'm searching for better methods so I can clean it 2day remembering how long I had to scrub them b4.
those filters are made of metal, i just put them between the dishes in my dishwasher machine. I just add 1 extra cube of detergent and i put the machine on the hottest setting. Works perfectly and you can use the same method for periodical cleaning.
Are we talking about Palmolive the dishwashing liquid for the dishwasher machine ? or the Palmolive dishwashing liquid for washing the dishes in the sink ?
Go to auto store buy gunk or engine grease remover ,spray it on the caked up filter (outside ventilated area ) then garden hose it. No scrubbing No grease getting into the drainage and later clogging problem.Simple.
The grease, oil and other chemicals won't accumulate if the range hood is diligently wiped with dishwashing soap after cooking. It's easier that way to maintain the cleanliness than cleaning all the gunk and goop coz the worst dirt is the one underneath the metal mesh which is the pad. The grease is so hard to come off. Maybe you'll have a better luck than I did. 😊
Shouldn't that be fine if you use water with a lower temperature? In that case the grease should be solved in the detergent even when the temperature drops lower down the drain, right?
I have a much faster way to clean your filters. Fill your sink up with very very very hot water. I boil my kettle and use the hot water from there. To that add a quarter of a cup of Borax. THANKZ FOR TAKING YOUR TIME SHOWING HOW TO CLEAN STOVE FILTERS. SO HARD TO FIND THE RIGHT SIZE STOVE FILTERS. THIS CAN SAVE YOU ALOT OF MONEY TOO.
I was glad to find these directions as we had never cleaned our 9 year-old range hood filters..I used a pan and dishwasher detergent and it took more than 1 application//rinsing, etc., but I now have clean filters. What a difference! Thank you Justin.

A great no nonsense video.... no annoying music or shouting
We just cleaned the filters in our range hood following Justin McCurry's directions and the filters look brand new!
I did mine too. It actually worked. 😊👍

Put the filter in the dishwasher and run it at the strongest cycle. Comes out super clean.
Spray both sides with 409 or any heavy duty de-greaser let it sit for half hour. Drop in a pot of boiling water the grease will slide off.

My simplified list is by no means exhaustive but I hope I have dispelled some myths - Happy Cleaning!
thanksss man
Can i use laundry liquid detergent instead?
thanks
Maquires tire and wheel cleaner work great. Its made to remove tar and oil.
Thank u so so much .😊😊
All the best for ur future projects.
Very good, neat and nice educative presentation. I appreciate it.
Awesome video , wish I would have seen this week ago before I cleaned mine . Totally going to do this next time around !
This was the easiest and quickest of all...thank you
No need to waste time on scrubing the filter.. Just take it outside and wash it with pressure washer... I'm doing it for years and works every time.
Recommend a brand & model?
Well the pressure washer ruin it tho?
I finally got around to trying your cleaning hack today and I can say I am 💯 happy. Mine looks brand new. It was so easy for me , I didn’t scrub, wet applied set and rinsed. Thanks
You video is one of the best to watch and it's worth it better thn other clons
Ha ha - sorry I've validated your hoarding habit, but glad you got use out of it! :)
:) I'll stick to changing them out
Mine fell apart on me too and I managed to get it clean and have used it over and over till one day I will have to replace it.
Where you bought them?
Alexis Arceo where you buy them?
Before the cleaning with the detergent: pour boiling water over it (outside if you can). It loosens the grease and the following cleaning doesn't require as much detergent.
Nice job on those filters. 👍 Now see how clean you can get that sheet pan. 😝
Wow!!! I'm so glad stumbled across this video.
Next time just you the liquide AWESOME! And let it soak in it and boom clean
You could have just soaked in a pot of water and dishwasher soup be let it simmer over a low heat for 25 minutes and skip the scrubbing.
Oh wow-thank you! My landlord will love me when I move out!
Right on, cleaner etc than when rented! Always get deposit back too!
I wish you were 1 of my tenants! :)
Calisa Hardy your @visa yiyeAvila
@@joaquincortada1483 are you kidding he waited 12 years to clean it plus look around his kitchen its disgusting. How about that pan?
The simplest method I found on my fed . Thanks .
Thank you very much hope your valuable information we have tried all different types of detergent and none of them work I will give this brand of detergent a try.
Can it be any brand of dishwasher soap or that brand works best?
years ago my husband took our dirty above stove filters like your outside and sprayed them with Engine Degreaser and let them sit for an hour then took garden hose to spray them clean then I wash them with soap and water WOW they were brite Clean NEW after that I would put in dishwasher once a week and they were 40+ years old and still looked like new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can of engine degreaser cost $3.50 spray wait an hour rinse wash with dish soap rinse done took about 1 and 1/2 hour time and $3.50 simple and cheap!!!!!
Vulcan-Raven I think he said you can use any brand of dishwasher detergent
If you have access to a covered area outside then using essentially the same procedure, but substitute the detergent with neat ammonia solution and brushed into the mesh will also produce amazing results. Make sure area is well ventilated as he ammonia fumes can be overwhelming. NB: be sure to wear rubber gloves!
Ufff ..was thinking in using paint thinner ... I am encouraged to do mine now like you demo here. Thank you Justin.
Glad , I finally googled how to clean an exhaust fan filter.
I feel so much better about how dirty my is.Thank you.
I have 2filters in my range hood that I want to clean so thank you for the tip of using the Palmolive dish soap cause I've been buying expensive cleaner so this is definitely worth trying.
Buy new ones their cheap at home depot or lowes.
Dawn dish soap works a lot better on grease & you'll use less, but thanks for the video, bleach is good to use for those hard to clean filters. Let it soak for a while & rinse very thoroughly
Denise Cannon really? Thank you
I just did 2 filters at a house I inherited, all I did was dip them in boiling water, & the were clean as a whistle. No scrubbing or anything. Then I dumped the water outside.
I just cleaned mine before finding this video. I used simple green and dawn dish soap outside with a parts cleaning brush. Rinsed with a spray nozzle and Boom, no more grease.
did you mix half and half of simple green and dish soap ? how did you mix these two products together for best degreasing action ?
Thanks for the tip. Now time to buy a new pan.
I just put mine in the dish washer about every 3 months. It comes out really clean with no scrubbing.
I started doing this now. Helps with maintenance. I don't think it would clean the 12 years of accumulation in this video though!
You can also put hot water in the sink and add Borax. It cleans very good
What ratio pls
Even quicker cleaning is with Dawn Powerwash. Lay the filter in the sink, give each side a good spray. Let it sit for a minute or two, then a quick scrub with an old toothbrush on each side & rinse. Looks brand new in under five minutes.
Wow 12 years of grease! Although I haven't done mine in 6 months & It's half as bad, probably because I'm a smoker & I'm sure the smoke would also escape through the fan too. Obviously I'm searching for better methods so I can clean it 2day remembering how long I had to scrub them b4.
I “thought” I had tried everything. I was wrong I will definitely try this!
exept the dishwasher. Doing that for more then 20 years. works wonderfully.
I definitely needed to watch this. Thank you so much. 🌹
those filters are made of metal, i just put them between the dishes in my dishwasher machine. I just add 1 extra cube of detergent and i put the machine on the hottest setting. Works perfectly and you can use the same method for periodical cleaning.
Thank-you for this info I have also heard that a dish washer is good for cleaning these " that's if you have one, I haven't
Yours are small enough to just chuck into a dishwasher. Mine is HUGE, so this gives me a few ideas. Mainly, get a new extractor fan!
Thank you for your video where can buy new exhaust fan filter ? thanks for information
awesome. I'm gonna give this a try. do u think that would work on wood cupboards that have grease build up on them?
Maybe but the dishwasher detergent might strip the paint/sealant/varnish off if it's real wood with stain on it. Test carefully somewhere first.
Ms Rain W. Maggie's wheels an tire cleaner on cabinets
I'm renting, will this not clog the sink the grease going down the drain?
Justin great video, thanks for posting this. Do you know if Cascade dishwasher detergent would work?
my second time watching this..how to clean my exhaust filter.thank youfor helping mefigure outa great way to clean things that many ignor.
Peeps who tried it please let us know if it worked. This guy has links to these products so I'm skeptical. Don't hate me! 😁
does the fan need oiling? it makes loud noise. thanks,
Does it have to be THAT brand or will any dishwasher det work???
NEXT VIDEO: Calling a plumber to auger out the drain.
Exactly I use a screen filter in my drain so food dont clog it
Shouldn't that be fine if you use water with a lower temperature? In that case the grease should be solved in the detergent even when the temperature drops lower down the drain, right?
Dump it in the yard
If you put them in the top rack of your dishwasher approximately once a month eventually all the grease comes off. I maintain mine this way.
Can you put this in the dishwasher
