Mariah Carey, it's almost like she was blessed and cursed at the same time. Blessed with one of the great vocal instruments in music, cursed with one of the most vulnerable, fragile voices in the industry that gets tired so quickly.

She’s the BEST!!!! "...because it's very difficult." I'm glad you acknowledge that. A lot of people, including her fans, think this is one of Mariah's "easiest numbers but wait until you start singing it.
it is indeed, but it's an easy MARIAH song, which means it's still crazy hard for us mere mortals, but compared to most of her other songs, it is easier.
Her voice does get tired easily because she has vocal nodules. They became more obvious as time went on but the signs have been there through her whole career. I can’t believe she gave us amazing vocals with them. I’m glad you noticed the phrasing problems on certain words the nodules can be very obvious even in her early studio recordings. It may be because she doesn’t have good vocal cord closure she has to work harder to phrase her words and get the sound out. She also does breathy whispers a lot I think that may be part of bad vocal cord closure due to the nodules but it makes it easy for her to do light falsetto whispers and according to her the nodules make it easy for her to hit the high whistle register. At 7:25 when she sings IS it’s like their is a small vocal break I’ve noticed this on certain words her voice tends to crack because of the nodules I believe. She still has a beautiful voice but the nodules definitely continue to affect her.
Thank you for this -- I read this only after I posted my comment, and it seems that you say she indeed has vocal nodules. It does explain some of what I'd heard and commented on. She's amazing, nodes or not nodes! :)
I think you're a bit confused on why she uses whisper. Technically is a very low falsetto and for her is a resource to wrap lyrics in emotion is called interpreting. And she is famous for transitions between her multiple registers in the space of a letter. That's one thing that made Mariah unique against her peer like Whitney or Celine. Her voice never sounds yelled it's always velvety smooth and never interrupting her transitions between registers
Ughhhh everything is because of her nodules. I SWEAR smh 🤦🏾♂️ When will the mythology end?? Please please please learn what nodules are and how they affect the voice.
I love the "breakdown" part of this video which I don't see on other reaction channels. I hope you can react to her other performance on that concert. Try 'Anytime You Need a Friend'. P.S. New sub here :)

what an insightful analysis! it does occur to me now how tired she sounds, albeit she still sounds beautiful and pleasant to the ears. and yes! the final chorus "and you know you can SURVIVE" switch up is genius! its unexpectes but so musically appropriate, and yeah it sounds like a 9th! i thought it was a 7th actually 😅
Thanks for a wonderful real and balanced reaction! The song was about 14th in a concert of 16 songs, so yes she probably was tired, but by the end of the song showed why she is the musical legend she is!
It sounds like there is air escaping between her vocal folds when they aren't compressed or that there's air-escape between the arythenoids. I don't know her vocal health or physiology (nodules? polyps? issues with some of the rippling of her vocal mucosa?) and don't presume to do anything but speculate here - and it might well be fatigue, but I do wonder, given that part of it sounds like her 'vocal tone'. It sounds a bit like there's lack of smooth closure that can be heard on the lower intensity ends of her breathier vocalizations. She is absolutely masterful at manipulating the length and width and breath and larynx positioning and all the riffs and glides and what not, not to mention her ability to belt out vocals. FWIW.
Lamb, hero was the 4th last song of that concert. After hero she sang Anytime You Need A Friend followed by AYNAF (C+C Remix) and lastly the surprise encore. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" 😘😘😘
I like your reaction for this song. It's Mariah's singing style, and she always gives us unpredictable surprise in most of her performances. So iconic and very different than other singers in this world.

I really enjoyed your style of reaction! Interesting how you noticed a fatigue in her voice in this clip. This was the end of a very lengthy concert, so I'm guessing that's very accurate. I always heard it as a nasality that usually isn't present, but I think your assessment makes a lot of sense, too.
My fave singer, so proud. She's not tired she sing this song by story tellng style (different with original singing style) btw her real voice is alto but the climax was the best part. Her larynx was relax she just pick more whisper style that why it heard like "fatigue" but thts not actually, its just her style singing at that era.
I think her voice sounds naturally fatigued and compressed because of her nodes. Her vocal cords don’t really have complete closure because of that. ‘Cause like you said, her larynx is pretty relaxed and neutral. She’s singing with pretty great technique. Her tone just naturally sounds tired - and I feel like that adds texture and flavour haha.
It is not easy to be a Mariah Carey. She have to perform live every of her difficult songs every night and keep her voice and vocal cord in a good shape. Even now at her old age she still have to perform these hard songs, i cant complain anymore. I thank her, she is still available for us till now. Thanks Mariah. For all of the lambs out there, support her while this legend is still here with us.
Actually learned so much from this thank you. And for more fatigue context, I believe this was the second to the last song in the set list. Now imagine doing songs that vocally demanding 15 times before singing this one 😂 Her voice has no choice but be tired But omg ur so sweet when ur saying your sentiments. Lmao and soo articulate!!
Please react to more Mariah Carey from 93 through 96 she had some incredible live moments during those times. Mariah is a master, there is no one better.
Thank you for demonstrating GENUINE knowledge of the voice!! Mariah has an amazing voice, we all know that. But there is internet/UA-cam mythology going around that she has “perfect” technique. You noted her fatigue, which her diehard lambs will attribute to nodules. They blame everything on nodules. The truth is that her technique was flawed, which is FINE because it gave her the sound that made her famous. The choices that she made often caused strain, and it wore her voice down very early in her career. Just because she sounded good doesn’t mean she was doing it healthily. Absolutely gifted, but she’s the vocal definition of “Don’t try this at home”.
She sounds tired because this song is sung just after a difficult song one called Always be my baby. It's in the middle of the tour too! Considering how difficult her songs are, it's unavoidable. (That strain sound)
We still know it’s Mariah. She’s done lots of concerts that’s where the fatigue comes in with her voice, she’s human. I respect that you know she try’s to please her fans. Appreciate the vid thanks ♥️
I think this was the almost last performance of the concert. She might be tired as most of her songs at that time were vocally demanding. Plus, she has been suffering vocal nodules for most parts of her singing careers. They make her voice disconnected, raspier, easily damaged and sometimes unreliable though she copes with them quite well (especailly at younger age).
Daydream tour did make her voice tire out. But it's definitely not the reason why she lost control of her upper belts. It's because right after her Daydream era, she released her next album, Butterfly and got on a tour after it without even having enough time for her voice to rest. That really took a toll on her voice that's why in Rainbow era, her voice was really tired. She even had a time where she didn't sleep for 9 days and then suddenly collapsed after. And the reason why she was rushing to release those albums, was because she wanted to finish her contract with Sony.
Very insightful analysis! Please do more reactions you are wonderful 😊 some suggestions "if it's over - 1991 Grammys" and "I don't wanna cry - 1996 Tokyo dome" and "make it happen - 1995 Madison Square Garden"
The first clip you showed, her having difficulty at the beginning of phrases. Forget phrases w belting, sometimes she wakes up and she’s not able to even speak properly bc of nodules (since she was a toddler) Even though she’s a powerful singer, her voice is so delicate. It’s mind blowing how she learned to sing around her nodules and this almost the last song of the night out of like 15 or something.
lolrachie1 She said that she would wake up & only be able to speak in her whistle register as a child not as an adult because she said she has learned how to control them.
when she said vocal fatigue I thought she didn't understand that it was Mariah's choice of singing style for this song at that time but I love this review and reaction...
It was one of her last songs of the concert so obviously her voice sounded alittle tired, however her vocals are sublime and I honestly dont think she sounded tired at all.
Great review 😁 Although, I personally didn't hear any fatigue, compression or tightness in this performance. This was the last year of prime vocals before her voice changed.
You need to listen harder then. If you’re a Mariah fan then you know when her voice is 100% or not. Her top belt register is still on point here, but her middle chest voice is tired
I think Mariah may have spastic dysphonia. I have it and it makes it hard to say or sing open vowels so the voice cracks when producing that sound. Such would be "home, our, face, bite, etc." I get Botox injections into the larynx.
hello Coach. You are such an inspiration. I would like you to please please please react to another video of Mariah Carey featuring Patricia Carey singing "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" live at ABC.
Even fatigued Mariah can outsing these other singers..lol. Unfortunately she has vocal nodules and it's still amazing what she can do with her voice still. Can you react to her Emotions live MTV Unplugged performace.
I have a great request! Celine Dion "Vole" from Paris 95. It's a beautiful song which was gifted to her, Her niece Karine who passed from cystic fibrosis at the age of 16. She actually died in Celine's arms as she sang to her. It's really a stunning song but a sad one!
Melismata seem organic to her, so does vocal transition. In short, I think versatility & agility make her vocally a master. I do agree with you that her consistency in vocal support is a weakness, partly due to her natural vocal nodules. Technically, her weaknesses are obvious, so are her strengths! She lacks the mixing techniques heard from other top tiers in the pop when her head voice is often considered "non-utilized". I believe constant use of airy phonation (falsetto & whistle registers) does chronic damage to vocal chords. Yet, she's a human being. No one is perfect, and she's near. Don't forget that she has co-written most of her songs in the past 3 decades, many of which become No.1 hits on different leagues. She's an all-round artist. Please react to her 1992 "If It's Over" in the Grammy live show. She's really on fire that time. It's a demonstration of her power in upper belts.
Mariah's tone is the best in the world. Greatest vocalist of all time. If a human sings her songs, it'll be suicide. Leave Mariah songs to Mariah Carey.
Hi! First time watching your videos and this was very nice :) As a Mariah fan, I think this performance is by far not her best and it's very hyped because of the 'extreme' vocals she used on the climax of the song, which is great. But for this song, there are far better performances, and even not for a reaction but for you to watch on your own, I'd recommend it live on Spain in 1994. And for other Mariah reactions, I'd really like for you to react to her performance of "Love takes time" at Kulan back in 1990
It's true. I love Mariah and I study every belt, riff and harmony, but she uses a lot of glottal attacks and vocal fry. I know it's the way to go get some proper closure in the vocal chords but her songs often make me over use it because I sing it like her.

Even fatigued Mariah can outsing these other singers..lol. Unfortunately she has vocal nodules and it's still amazing what she can do with her voice still. Can you react to her Emotions live MTV Unplugged performace.
Also more Mariah 😍
I have a great request! Celine Dion "Vole" from Paris 95. It's a beautiful song which was gifted to her, Her niece Karine who passed from cystic fibrosis at the age of 16. She actually died in Celine's arms as she sang to her. It's really a stunning song but a sad one!
I would love to hear your reaction to Shinedowns cover of simple man. Brent Smith's voice is so pure and soul penetrating it will give you goose bumps
More mariah carey video please and breakdown of the video while you explain.. ☺ 😘
Sweetie you have nothing to be concerned with😂❤
Literally
I love your videos. Congratulations for them! I'm looking forward to a Lana del Rey video!
Please react to Mariah anytime you need a friend live at the Tokyo Dome!!👑
Mariah's tone is the best in the world. Greatest vocalist of all time. If a human sings her songs, it'll be suicide. Leave Mariah songs to Mariah Carey.
Please listen to Anytime you need a friend and make it happen from Tokyo 1996 they are superb trust me.
Hi! First time watching your videos and this was very nice :)
As a Mariah fan, I think this performance is by far not her best and it's very hyped because of the 'extreme' vocals she used on the climax of the song, which is great. But for this song, there are far better performances, and even not for a reaction but for you to watch on your own, I'd recommend it live on Spain in 1994.
And for other Mariah reactions, I'd really like for you to react to her performance of "Love takes time" at Kulan back in 1990
Please react more to The Voice. Ms. Whitney Houston!🙏🙏
The GOAT.
If being vocal fatigue sounds like this i wont mind lol
Please react to Mariah Carey again. It is so entertaining.
Please react to
Céline Dion I Surrender Live Las Vegas 2007 from her A New Day Show!!! The belt at the end will leave you SHOOK!
It's true. I love Mariah and I study every belt, riff and harmony, but she uses a lot of glottal attacks and vocal fry. I know it's the way to go get some proper closure in the vocal chords but her songs often make me over use it because I sing it like her.
