- This is my reaction, analysis and breakdown of Mariah Carey Rehearsing “Vanishing,” for SNL 1990 along with her backup singers. Vanishing is from her first album entitled “Mariah Carey,” which happens to be one of my favorites. Mariah gives us such a rich, dark color and so many iconic motifs that became a quintessential part of her sound. In this song we got to hear some great riffs, runs, and mixed belts from Mariah. But I am really loving the soft delicate tone we hear at the beginning, not too strong and in your face, but supported, warm, and beautiful. Mariah is so powerful it’s not always we get to hear such a gentle display of her beautiful sound.
I am a jazz/R&B vocalist, baritone saxophone player, music educator, and vocal coach local to New Orleans. I have two degrees in jazz/music education and work professionally playing music. This is the performance that made me appreciate and recognize Mariah’s greatness. Truly a masterpiece

I came across this performance of "Vanishing" only about 8yrs back, and yes, it totally blew my mind

I love the outtakes of "Forever" at the beginning of this one. "Vanishing" was written and produced by Mariah on her first album. This SNL live performance is legendary. Cheers for your wicked reactions and teachings! - Having finished watching the video, the editing is phenomenal and the rants and bits are priceless!!!

Hi Erika. I love this reaction to one of Mariah's older lesser known songs. As you said, I felt the initial pacing of the song showed her vocal richness and emotion, allowing the listener to really connect with her. Mariah will always be a vocal queen in the past and present. As again, your analysis was very detailed into this performance, noting the Mariah's extraordinary runs and riffs. I love that you were so intense in this video during the analysis. Your funny comments/bits definitely gave me a smile numerous times during this video.

Once again, excellent break down! I’d recommend you to make a Short comparing the “somebody’s doing the wrong note” from this rehearsal video and the real live performance one from SNL (but be careful as it’s copyrighted) or the one from the Tatou Club where she wore a brown dress! ❤️

Yes please! My non musical ears have always been wondering what note he did wrong. Someone once told me that it was just a higher harmony that wasn’t supposed to be in the original composition, but I still can’t hear it! Lol
I discovered this song after I discovered Mariah’s “without you” song when it hit Europe. Bought the debut album and got obsessed with that song that deserves to be a classical like all of Aretha’s ones. This rehearsal is even better than the live she did. « Doing the wrong note » is like the memory of the birth of a Queen that will testify of how good she is and was one day when she died at 12 YO in 2122.

Hey there ! Loved you reaction as always! Notice how they have put a stuffy guy of SNL as the top left Backing vocalist because they did not had their real pianist for the Rehearsal! So her lefty Backing Vocalist that he was an excellent pianist himself saved the day. SNL Camera man/Director wanted to have the lefty though thats why they putted a stuff guy..he seems so lost and funny :D as for the wrong note.. (although never understood it , maybe she mixed up cause she missed one of the backing vocalists,the lefty i mentioned earlier ) she got really nice relationship with her backing vocalists they always are playful if you hear the whole rehearsal. snl stuff even yell to them cause they where singing and doing irrelevant songs and vocal gymnastics :P The transition on the whistle is one of the best of all time (not only by Mariah)

I didn’t know she didn’t like to sustain long notes bc of her nodes!!! Man she can really hold some out she has incredibleeeee lung capacity. I never would’ve known if hadn’t told me!!!
