C'mon, it's a big cuddly costume in front of a very cuddly guy! How could he not? :P
If you give an Adam a Totoro costume, he'll want a voice changer to sound just like him. When he puts the costume on, he'll realize he needs a fan to keep himself cool. He'll also want a smartphone rigged up, to see where he's going. Once he sees you on the smartphone, he'll want a camera inside, so you can see him too.. But it's too dark to include the footage, so he might want to add a light.

relax I'm just joking about the backlash he got a last week when he supported Bill Nye and his new show, that got rightfully destroyed online. Now don't get me wrong the gender discussion is a very complicated thing and Bill Nye's condescending and fact-less approach is what got people so pissed off, and I think Adam should've just stayed out of it.

I thought that was a very clever and much cheaper way of doing that. We did a full centaur costume a few years ago....OMG...the fabric cost a fortune. Never thought to use those super soft blankets

I can't be the only one who would love to see a series where Adam reviews other peoples Cosplays. He has such an appreciation for other peoples work, it would be great to watch.
Yeah. He wouldn't discredit the buyers, but any self made pieces would get recognised too as they are often overlooked at cons.
The one thing really awesome about Mr. Adam Savage is that he is never selfish to share helpful tips and information.
Also, though side by side his costume does look better, he geeks out over the other Adam's design choices that were different than his.

Better than the Deadpool Army. Was at Kansas City Comicon 2017 and there were a lot of Deadpools. It was pretty lame at that point. Yet a Totoro Army. I will never argue.

You should see the video of Scott Adsit (the voice of Baymax) try on an inflatable Baymax costume at a Comic Con Q&A and was in character for part of it. That was so freaking adorable!

Yeah, this is the only time I've ever been able to feel smug and superior to Adam about something I'd made. 😁 I did a Sith costume for Halloween a few years ago, and since the costume store voice-changers sound so awful, I used a pro headworn mic, which ran to a pitch-shifting guitar pedal mounted on my utility belt, which plugged into a battery-powered guitar practice amp also on my belt.
The sound quality was infinitely better than the off-the-shelf Monster Voice Changers or an old iPhone, and speech was easily intelligible. And because of the full frequency response and lack of distortion of the pro equipment, the headset mic being right next to my mouth, and the powerful volume the mini-amp was capable of, I avoided the problem Adam's setup had where his real voice was as loud or louder than the pitch-shifted version.
One last thing that helped in my case was that I had a respirator covering my mouth, whereas the speaker on my belt was not covered by any costuming.
Dan you also have to remember that we are hearing adams real voice as picked up by the original microphone inside his costume, I imagine that it would be much more muffled outside.
Ah. Yes, rewatching that bit, it does indeed sound like the Adams are still wearing wireless mics for the camera. It sounds like Mr. Savage's iPhone-pitch-shifted comments to camera wouldn't have been intelligible if they'd used a mic external to the costume. Nevertheless, there's no way an old iPhone could compete with my solution, sound-quality-wise or volume-wise (absolute volume, or ratio of pitch-shifted volume to real voice volume), so I'm still gonna take it as a win for me. 😁

Adam is such a guy. Just like a normal guy to everyone and that is what makes him so cool. I wish I get to meet this wonderful person at some point in my life. It will be a day I'd never ever forget.

this gave me an funny idea for a chinese-dragon-style Catbus costume, i can see like a hollow framework held like an old paramedic lift with the people holding it up dressed as passengers (maybe a No face and a Chihiro, or if you could get enough people, have a hole in the bottom so people could get in and have photos of them "sitting" in the bus), and the head of the bus would be sort of a totoro style "bubble" with one person inside to move it around or light up it's eyes, keep it animated y'know?...
this channel is fun, i'd never had thought up such things and i'm so glad i found that ted talk and discovered this place
I think Adam would really like to have a Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine armor as a costume. It would combine his love of full body cosplays and his love of space suits and also come with some unique challenges on how to make yourself seem 8 feet tall.
Also the detailing on any decent looking 40k armor is insane, right up Adam's alley.
Make magazine interviewed a guy who does movie-quality props and costume suits. And he had made several Warhammer 40k Space Marine suits, with built-in stilts in the boots, to make the wearers nearly 8 feet tall.
Space marine suits are a real presence at Cardiff cons as we have Brotherhood of iron. I sat next to one of their girlfriends during the talk they gave, apparently he has a shed just for his suit.
I love how Adam got excited with the features of the other Totoro. Twins!
I created my own Totoro cosplay to wear to Tekko 17, which is an annual anime convention held in Pittsburgh each April. I was able to do a lot of similar modifications to mine like "guest" Adam did to his. There were actually 2 Totoros walking the con floor of our con too, and I did meet the other, just not in costume. Despite having the fan rigged up inside, I can only really wear the costume a max of 3 hours at a time. Totally worth it for how much love Totoro gets, and I plan to make Totoro my primary cosplay from now on!

I have never been to a comicon but after watching you have so much fun doing this I would love to maybe go to one in California! I have loved Adam since I was young. He was a role model for me as a child. As I grew up I got into cosplaying and I love it so much and I recently found out that Adam is a cosplayer as well! Which makes me love him even more! Hes an amazing person and Ill always love what he does.
I'm not familiar with the Totoro character, never heard of it before, but a cool build to watch and see how Adam really enjoyed it; so great to watch!
Adam Savage is so cool! I love how excited Savage is to meet another Totoro. And Savage really treated Adam Quinones so warmly, like a good friend. It seems like Adam really made Adam's Comic Con's experience be something so much more special, and vice versa! :-p

Love the costume! My wife also watched your build and loved it too! She is a huge fan of totoro and mentioned a great point and an idea for a great build... the making of that shoulder brace for the costume and maybe make it with materials so that the average person could build it and save their necks. I noticed that yours was constructed of what looked like aluminum and I can weld well, but TIG welding isn't for the average joe. Plus, with safety as one of your top objectives...thought you could help take some kinks out their costumes...LOL I love what you do and you are a wonderful inspiration for ideas and motivation. I am also very jealous of your workshop.

J.J. Don't worry. It was a huge cash grab and a lot of panels weren't even in the app. It was poorly coordinated and they even screwed over people with VIP tickets by letting anyone sit in those rows cause they didn't sell enough.

the coil whine of that fan is nerve racking, may i suggested using a high airflow computer case fan from Fractal Design or Noctua as they tend to move a crap ton of air and are quieter than a mouse

Oh man, i can't believe that smile is all perler beads! I always use plastic cross stitch canvas for stuff like that. The face of my Katamari cousin head is made of it, with very sheer nude fabric sewn over it and the face painted on. I also have a Keeper/Safehead cosplay from The Evil Within that has a small slot in the front with a piece of it in there, spraypainted to look like metal.
