- Blueberry the blue tonged skink needed an upgraded habitat that was better suited to meet all of her needs. Thanks to the support from our donors, we were able to give her a sweet new home!

We have blue *_tailed_* skinks where I live, but no blue tongued ones to my knowledge and our skinks are much smaller. This special blue tongued girl is beautiful. Keep her happy for us all!

Lmao one of the Australian fruit bat rescue channels I follow has a wild blue tongued skink who occasionally sneaks in to steal her cat’s food. I think Batzilla? They are mischievous critters!

Do they bite thou? Let's say if I see one in the wild, is it safe to just like pick em up by hand? Just curious. 🙂
Defintely wouldn't recommend trying to pick up a wild one, unless you have a good reason to and have some experience. These guys can be quite quick and their bite does hurt, especially if they hold on and don't let go right away.

That blue tongue is awesome!! Is it known what the benefits of a blue tongue are for this species of lizard?
they use their tongue as a threat display! "i'm poisonous don't eat me!" similar to some species of frog. So when threatened they will push their tongue out and hiss to ward of predators.
they are not poisonous and thus this a false threat display. This adaptation is not uncommon in the aniaml kingdom but is always cool to know about.

I know it's anthropomorphizing, but her face! She looks, to me anyway, like she's saying, 'Yup! Life is pretty good.' A little hint of a smile, especially when I see her from right in front.
Here in Kentucky we have the five lined skink, Plestiodon fasciatus. They are so cute! We see them sunning themselves around our porch steps, and if there's a little crack or void space that our skinks can escape to at a moment's notice, that's just fine by them.
Our Kentucky skinks are way smaller than Blueberry. A long individual might be five or six inches (12 to 15 cm) long, and they are slim customers! I think I read that of all the lizard species, the skinks are the most globally successful: they have what's called "cosmopolitan distribution", which means, in their case, they're found all over the earth. Just imagine colonizing an entire planet that's 22,000 miles in circumference, when each footstep only takes you a centimetre further than you were before! Fortunately, they're fast. When a skink wants to move, there's no time like the present!
The new habitat looks great. As always with the channel, even if we care for animals that aren't skinks, we can take a skinky lesson from Animal Wonders to heart and put it into practice. What are the needs of the animals we care for? What were their habits of life before we became their caregivers? How can we create habitats, and a life experience, that best mirrors the natural environment that the animals prefer?
I love that Blueberry has the blue tongue _before_ she eats the blueberries! 💙 We had lots of Blue-tongues living in the bush around our houses growing up, and seeing a happy little Blueberry is a wonderful reminder of all those lizards we'd 'adopted' & named as we watched them enjoy basking on the same rocks day after day 🦎

My bearded dragon can’t be on loose substrate because of a very high risk of impaction due to health issues so I use reptile carpet and tiles (he still has his toes). He likes to burrow though so to give him that we put a very soft microfiber towel in his tank and he loves to burrow into it just like Blueberry

Hey! I just adopted a baby jeweled lacerta who was born without feet. He has 2.5 toes total, one on each hind leg, and a half one on one front leg. I've been trying to gather more information on lizards with similar disabilities. Right now he can get around just fine, but as he gets bigger and bulkier, I'm concerned that he'll start getting sores on his feet or belly. Have you noticed any issues similar to that that I should look out for? Thank you so much for this video.
If you look back through the AWM catalogue there are a few videos where they talk about the challenges & solutions they came up with for housing Blueberry... I know they've talked about the types of substrate they have tried (including blankets & I think even astroturf?) so you might want to check that out 👍 Good on you for adopting an animal with special needs too... that's awesome! 🐾
@@medea27 Thank you! I actually ended up contacting them through Instagram and they've helped me out! And of course I watched the video of Blueberry's setup haha. So far Metric is doing great on loose substrate but he doesn't have the bulk of an adult so we'll see how I need to adjust.
