Hello, is there another nut/screw that can be taken off to allow more coolant to drain from this N42 B20 engine?

I would remove the lower coolant hose and thermostat, they’re mounted on the lower side of the engine. Otherwise, you’ll probably have to remove the freeze plugs.

@@Yiazzy thanks mate. Also did you ever have this weird rattly growl when starting cold? It never happens unless engine is cold and goes away after 1 second.

@@KilliKonKarnage actuality I do. I suspect it’s the oil pressure valve inside the oil filter housing that’s causing the vanos oil pressure to drop down while the car is stationary. Hence causing the chain rattling noise until the pump builds up new pressure when you start the car. So I will try to change my oil filter housing to solve that issue. But I haven’t done so yet. During cold winter days the oil gets thicker, which reduces the flow and time it takes for the oil to travel and reach the vanos unit and build enough pressure.

@@Yiazzy ahh that makes a lot of sense thanks very much. I thought it could be the timing chain tensioner as other people have reported with these engines.

@@KilliKonKarnage yeah, that’s another issue. It depends on the manufacturing date and origin of your car. The tensioner will give you a more constant rattle, even after the warmup sequence. You can actually unbolt the chain-tensioner to check if it’s ok. Don’t have to drain any oil or anything… just don’t forget to use a torquewrench when you reinstall it! :)
