R.I.P. Barry Humphries (Dame Edna). We thank you for all the laughs you provided with your incredible wit, facial expressions and hilarious costumes. Barry Humphries is on record as saying that he found it difficult at the start to "make it" in America. Part of the reason was apparently that many Americans thought of him as a "drag act", whereas in fact he maintains he is an actor playing - in this case - a female character. He is now 87 years of age and retired though it has occasionally seemed a little bit like one of the many retirements of Frank Sinatra!

I know he holds the great distinction of the Order of Australia, but I've always been surprised that "Bazza" hasn't been knighted - unless of course he has turned it down. I saw Dame Edna live on stage some years ago. Barry Humphries was a scream! He called up a young woman from the audience. He proceeded to call her mother-in-law and put her on speaker for the whole auditorium. The poor woman didn't know what was going on! The audience was in stitches.
Barry tells of one very awkward incident where he had been haranguing a woman in the audience and had called her up - only to find that she was blind and she came up with her friend guiding her. He felt absolutely dreadful but also realised as a professional comedian he had "to drive through the skid" and so he said, "Well at least you didn't bring the dog." Apparently no one laughed more than the lady herself!
I saw Barry Humphries on a St Kilda tram. He was not yet famous and was persuading a Little Girl to accompany him wherever. No one on the tram attempted to stop them when hé succeeded.
