Manufacturers should legally be BANNED from making sealed tub machines. it is not cheaper and is only done so that they can deliberately engineer a failure just out of warranty period. It is fraud.

      Your not wrong Peter,
as not everyone can afford to pay two to three hundred pounds for a new machine every eighteen or twenty four months.

@@green-crocs-fixes1520 My own machine has just failed, the drum has seized solid and not only is it a sealed tub, there is very little flange to even try and drill screw holes through for bolts. Engineered that way on purpose no doubt.... otherwise, I'd have had a go at doing this. Manufacturers simply should not be allowed to make sealed tubs... but of course, they will respond to that by increasing the price up to the £600 level - which is where you CAN get a machine with a tub you can dismantle!

Peter i had already replaced this machine when it broke down, just thought I would have a go at repairing the unit after reading all of the blogs stating that it is a sealed unit. Not sure why they call it an Eco-Tub as it is far from economical to the consumer when it goes wrong.Brought a Bosch washer dryer for £900 which has a split (dismantle type) tub.

    • @jaycee1980

@@green-crocs-fixes1520 Yeah I might have a go at it just for the sake of it... next time I can afford to I will be doing the same as you, investing money in a split-tub machine, probably a Bosch!
The bastard is before this we had a Whirlpool which did have a split tub... it lasted 12 years and the spider snapped from metal corrosion. Whirlpool wanted £200 for a new drum.. and I wish i'd paid it now as everything was replaceable.. Replaced it with another cheaper Whirlpool that just lasted 2 years before the bearing went, and before I knew about the sealed drum thing. The machine that's just gone wrong is a Beko, but at least it was a freebie!

Hi, I've just successfully replaced the bearings in my hotpoint as a result of copying this brilliant video. The only things I did slightly different are that I drilled the holes for the new screws before I sawed the flange and used a hand saw, I don't have a power saw, it took a little longer but no big deal. I also used a sealant instead of glue because that's what I had available and as you said its just to seal not stick (the screws hold it all together). anyway money is tight and this has saved me a small fortune (a new machine basically) so a big thanks and I wish you well. Gerry

This is a great video. Many thanks for taking the time to make it.
I’ve just done my Hotpoint WML520 sealed drum. Here are some additional things people may want to consider.
    1. Do drill the drum weld first before cutting open. I used a 3mm drill and made holes approx every 75mm (3”) I used this hole size to maximise the sealing width for the adhesive (Because the weld width is very narrow - approx 8 to 10mm.)
    2. I decided to use self tapping screws instead of bolts to clamp and hold the drum halves together and I ‘pre-tapped’ each hole with a screw before cutting the drum apart to make assembly easier and quicker. Self tappers are cheap and easy and clamped the halves really well after gluing. (But don’t over tighten)
3.Do use a reciprocating saw. (An air saw may be better though.) Be careful not to damage the steel drum inside. Don’t bother using a multi tool, the blade gets too hot and melts the plastic. (As I discovered!)
    4. Use the edge of a Stanley knife or similar to de- burr all of the plastic around the weld surfaces. ( the small burrs could get between the surfaces when gluing together.)
    5. I got my bearings and main seal from a local engineering supplier. £15. Quality bearings too. Hotpoint didn’t stock bearings for my machine as it was a sealed drum. (But they sell the drum at around £200 😱)
    6. Wash all soap sludge from the drum halves etc with a car pressure washer. (It cleans it really well and is quick.)
And properly clean the drum spindle until it shines (use rotary wire brush in a drill for the steel but only wire wool or similar on the brass ferrule at the base of the spindle . The brass bit is important, it must be really clean and undamaged because the main seal runs on this. I used car brake cleaner to give the spindle a final wash before assembly and then a good squirt of silicone spray to help it go together. Turn the drum as you push it in the last bit to help the seal go onto the brass ferrule.
    7. DO make sure the back of the bearing sleeve/retainer is supported on a block of wood or similar when banging in the bearings. The sleeve is only held in plastic and therefore could be broken free or seriously damaged. Put a longer bit of wood into the metal drum when knocking in the smaller back bearing too.
    8. I ended up using white Evo Stik adhesive to glue the drum together. I’m sure the pu Gorilla glue is great, but the Evo has good reviews, is waterproof and has a temperature range of up to 100 degrees C.
    9. When applying the glue, just be careful not to put too much on, because you won’t be able to clean or remove the ‘squidge’ inside the drum when assembled. This could potentially cause problems if the squidge breaks off later on and blocks the pump etc. Obviously you need enough glue though to create a proper seal.
    10. It’s probably worth considering investing in a new door seal while the drum is out (£20) Much easier to but on the inner spring! My door seal was quite disgusting when I looked in all the nooks and crannies!
    11. Give the drum glue the minimum of 24hrs curing time before using. Be patient!
Anyway, mine is all done now and working a dream. A lot of effort I suppose, but it should be good for many years to come.
    Hope this helps!

Thanks for this! A new drum assembly for my Whirlpool is £216, the bearings are only about £15. I'd taken the whole thing apart only to find that it was a sealed drum and realised that if I had a spare £216, I might as well have ust bought a new machine. A few minutes with my old Black and Decker Jigsaw and now I am just working the bearings out! The Jigsaw isn't the best but it did the job easily with a wood cutting blade.

      Hi Nicola,
Fair play to you and i hope you complete successfully. I also removed the Tub on my unit initially only to discover it was sealed and a replacement Tub was not cost effective, hence the video. I think whatever is used to split the Tub is not relevant so long as it is successful, prior to starting mine I watched a video by Kevin Frost and he used an Angle Grinder, and you are right you could pretty much buy a brand new machine for the price of a new Tub. Good luck.

Most bearings have model numbers on them (i. e 6201 etc. ) Then there is no need to measure, just give the numbers to the bearing supplier. Better still, take the old bearings in with you or send them.

    Brilliant
Just a few more tips on how to do this Job which takes time but is not difficult really.
Watch all the Videos on this first
As you dismantle the washing machine take video or photos at each stage before you unscrew things, disconnect wires or unbolt things, that way you won't be struggling when it comes to re assembling the machine. more is better than less, trust me.
Before you cut the drum mark the drum with a Sharpie pen in several places this will aid re assembly, and drill 4mm holes at about 100mm (4inch) centres all round the lip where you are going to cut, you can buy a long, 4mm drill bit, 120mm long from Screwfix (about £3.00 for 2) while you are there buy the 4mm Stainless lock nuts (£3.00) and 30mm long Bolts (also about £3.00) You might need to buy some Vernier Calipers to accurately measure the old bearing sizes, more on this later. When you are drilling the holes test the first one with a nut and bolt to make certain you can get it in and do it up you when you come to re assemble, this will prevent you from drilling in the wrong vertical plane.
Cutting the Drum. I opted for using a hacksaw, which will cut all the way round the drum, I have power tools but you are in better control with a hand tool. It took just under an hour, quick tea break included. You will need a waterproof sealant when you put the drum back together. I used Aqua Mate Sealant.(£5.00)
Knock out the outer bearing first, so from the inside out, using a metal drift, it takes a bit of whacking before it comes out. Then from the outside knock out the inner bearing, the water seal comes out with the bearing when you do this.
Now you have your bearings and seal out measure them with a good mm rule or the Verner capilers, you need, inner diameter, outer diameter and thickness in each case. I then ordered them from Wych Bearings (about £20.00 the lot)on line. I did this job in the morning about 11.00 and so was able to just get them the next day just using standard first class post. There is a helpline if you are not sure what you want.
I put the new bearings in the freezer for a couple of hours (Metal contracts in cold) and kept the drum in the sun (Metal expands in heat) to make it easier to knock them in .follow the videos for this but use wood blocks because any metal on metal blows will damage your new bearings.
Use loads of sealant on the drum before you put the two bits together. Line it all up and put in the nuts and bolts you have plenty of time to do them up tight. I let my drum and sealant cure for 24 hours after, but it can be done faster I think. Then just re assemble it all. Hope you took enough photoes......!!!

Your hoover drum is identical to my Hotpoint Aquarius one, i tried gorilla glue and to be honest i do not believe it to be a good adhesive, i like the fact it expands but was not impressed with how easy the drum was to separate the second time around(looks like a slower version of expanding foam), my recommendation is to use a polyurethane adhesive sealer like Tiger Seal by U-POL, this adhesive is extremely strong and can be used on many different materials, it also can be layed in a bead about 10mm high should you need it....

I used this glue because of its water resistant qualities and it helps to adhere the two halves together like the manufacturer had done initially, I would imagine that this would be easier to cut through in the even of another failure. Hello there. I did this same job some years ago on the split tub hotpoint washer/ dryer. I am now going to do it again on a sealed type tub for a friend. What struck me when I did it the first time round was that in between the two bearings is quite a lot of space that could have been partly filled with grease. There are special greases on the market that work in water like that which is used in small boats, so I thought that I would give it a go. What do you think, is it worth doing, or am I going to end up with grease on the washing. On another daft idea. It would be very easy for me to fit a flexible pipe that would connect the space between the bearings to a grease point on the side of the washer casing so that grease could be put into the bearings with a grease gun when they started to get a little noisy. OH! YES, great video which has inspired me to do what I was told was impossible to do, thanks.

nice work, did similar a month ago on a 14 year old indesit and its still going. You cant glue the drum plastic ( ok you can with a primer), I just used gasket sealant and bolts every 100mm. had to cut my bearings out with a dremel. Bearing brothers, the bearings are in standard sizes so if you measure them within a mm your unlikley to get it wrong. The water (oil) seal was the hard bit but in the end I got a simillar size and the lip profile didnt matter. The seal had a maker and size embossed on it but wasn't still available. wish I has an electric saw ! but a one sided hacksaw maybe gives a thinner cut.

Good job mate, I have been meaning to experiment with beating changes on sealed units however have not got round it as always got ones coming in and out, so easy to just strip for parts and move on, I repair and refurbish machines etc.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you find the info for what size of bearings you needed for this, also do you think there would be anyway to incorporate the sealing ring in this? Also what mistakes have you made doing this in the past as I guess you have done it a few times.
    Thanks for info :-)

This is my first gig (not my occupation) and I had already brought a replacement machine but thought I would have a go after reading the blogs regarding Eco or Sealed Tubs. Never encountered any mistakes only locating the Bearing, had to send the sizes of the bearing Race inner, outer and width's and the Seal to a bearings Manufacturer. Jason we have two washing machines now, this one is still working fine nearly 12 months on.

Green-Crocs-Fixes Good job :-) Its always good to see people willing to at least try.
If you ever want pocket money, have a look on gumtree, you can pick up machines for free, or for very very cheap, and if you can fix this, then you could fix all the faults you could encounter excluding computer board failures.
Example :- I picked up a machine for £10 today, not spinning. Carbon brushes on the motor (free for me as I have a box of them off stripped machines etc, £10 if you buy them) will sell it tomorrow for £110
Picked up a condenser tumble dryer yesterday for £15, delivered it this morning for £100 +£10 delivery. It wasn't heating, if your creative like you are then you can fix this cheap 9/10 times replacing the thermostat or TOC on the heater as this trips like a fuse and 9/10 times its because they have not cleaned the condenser and blocks the air flow.
You can do lots of these very fast, and in fact the cleaning takes longer than the repairs as I do get them very shiny as helps sell them :-)
You will get machines that don't drain, like a zanussi I picked up for free while delivering one, I told them I would take them it away for them. The drain pump was blocked.... Yes it really is this simple.
Well there is a tip, and another is that the drums make excellent firepits, just invert the pulley on the back (the aluminium ones) and you have a stand that looks good :-) or buy one from me for £20 :D

Richard Wilson In your opinion right?
You also then understand Richard. The models that you can change bearings on are held together by a series of bolts around the tub in the same fashion correct?
Now if your slightly switched on you might say that those bolts are usually located in the middle of the tub, and you would be correct in assuming the stress points on the machine change.
Your telling me there is no way to secure this?
Stick to replacing parts mate, however I do plenty of fixes, including dismantling motors, improvising where necessary and do computer board repairs to a small degree, repairing relay switches etc, I am still learning this.
Considering this man said that it has held in place for over a year now, I would say that it a good start. If I was to do it, I would do certain things different to add strength but the method is obviously sound judging by this video and others I have seen since.
I guess in your opinion though the only safe way is to replace the tub right? Or any part thats broken?
How about getting heat welding sticks for PVC, laying them around like the sealing ring. Then using a heat gun to re weld the tub? Guess would need to do 1000 tests over 1000's of hours to do this repair too?
Part of being an engineer is being able to fix things with some knowledge of physics and common sense.
I am telling you I could reattach this tub without any chance of it ever splitting. My question was about the seal, did it retain the water.
      It did. Question answered.

Nice vid. How did you get the star shaped torx bolt off the back holding on the drum pulley? and does it unscrew clockwise or anti-clockwise that bolt?
I dont know whether I would feel comfortable cutting the outer drum and then gluing it back up again. and then a day to wait for the glue to dry.
Last year my drum bearings went in my WMUD843P and it has a sealed/welded drum. I managed to get a brand new drum off the net (even came with a brand new element fitted in it and ntc) for 96.00euro complete and 25eur delivery and I fitted it into our machine in one afternoon.

The Torx bolt undoes anti clockwise as far as i remember as this was done back in Dec 2015. The Drum is Bolted together, the glue helps to hold the unit together but primarily it is the seal. I had already purchased another machine prior to repairing this one. This was just a project that proved successful. Thanx.

Not everyone ha £250 to spend on a new machine especially when they fail just out of warranty.
I have repaired three of these so far and these are machines which had been discarded due to the Bearings failure, total cost is around £24 for the parts and glue.

Why the hell do they seal the drum ? If an engineer had come to do the same repair, would he have cut the drum open OR charged you 160.00 for A NEW Drum outer, inner and bearings? because that would have been what I call a 'rip off"!! So I have a strange request maybe you may be able to help.
I opened up my 8kg indesit innex washing machine and the bearings are completely damaged. The front bearing was completely shattered :-(. Means making measurements becomes rather tricky.
Anyone ever opened such a machine and still remembers the sizes of bearing ordered?

    • @green-crocs-fixes1520

      Hi Dennis,
So long as you measure the outer diameter of the big ring and the inner diameter of the smaller ring for both bearings and their width, don't worry about the bearings as most of mine were missing. measure the seal also.
      Kind Regards.

@@Freshcut93 Yes I used to use Blue Hylomar on engine gaskets back in the day, and this would seem ideal as it can withstand high temperatures, however this is a different setup. The bolts are used to hold the Tub together, the Gorilla Glue is used as a seal as it expands when drying filling any gaps missed, also helps to hold the unit together. But like you said.. nothing ventured and all that!

I have a similar machine, the bearings are fine however I just had to replace the 2 lower suspensions legs due to it shaking about violently, now I have a leak that is somewhere near the back and is getting onto and into the motor but I cannot find the source. is it possible the violent shaking has cracked the outer tub? and if so is there a way of fixing it?

    • @green-crocs-fixes1520
      @green-crocs-fixes1520  7 років тому +1

      Dave Kemp Hi Dave,
You may find that the crack is around the bearing area as there is a lot of stress around that area anyway, and the extra shaking makes it worse. Strongly recommend that you remove the Tub and Seal with Gorilla Glue, squeeze it into the hole or seam when the unit has dried out as it will expand and leave a mushroom type seal. Then allow to dry for 24hrs. Regards, Dave.

Thanks for your reply, I opened up the sealed tub with my scorpion saw with a fine blade fitted. Sadly one of the legs on the spider has shattered and shards of the metal have punctured the outer plastic tub in quite a few places. As the spider is welded onto the inner drum and the price of a complete unit was so high I had no option but to order a new machine. Had individual parts been available I could have fixed it but modern times being as they are the manufacturers want you to buy the full tub/drum assembly.

It is unfortunate that a repairman works so poorly. For example, to put the bearings in place, he could use a long screw and two washers AND a nut to fasten on sides of the bearings, which helps to place bearings in its place by gradually tightening the nut, and also to drill holes. he could use taller drill bit to create holes with a direct angle.
