  • Radio host Tom Dunne of Newstalk 106-108 FM interviewed Hope and Colm of Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions, Nov. 16, 2016, on his radio program. The interview is also available via the radio station's web site's "Listen Back" feature which facilitates listener access to past show archives.

The interview deserves wider availability (e.g. via youtube), imo, especially as interview recordings (as opposed to press ones in print or text) of Hope are rare. Probably for Colm too. As a fan, I enjoy hearing their speaking voices. And one doesn't get to hear Hope's delightful laugh in a print interview!
It's a short interview. It would be nice if it was longer, but it's a good one, imo. Fans should enjoy it.
Anyone interested can download an audio file (MP3) of this interview, together with a text transcript I made from it from a file hosting site, here: mega.nz/#!DQsglIIQ!YJ4Iuw36h1...
Hope & Colm have done lots of interviews by now for their Until The Hunter album, although they're almost all in text form, not audio. So far, I've collected and archived twenty-two 2016-17 interviews at fan site, here: mazzystar.free.fr/phpBB3/viewt...
where anyone can read them. This Irish one and a German radio one (also findable at my yt Channel) are the only audio recordings I know of from 2016.

This is the most I've heard her speak... It's so surreal because in the other interviews I've read or seen videos of she's so reserved. Such a pleasant surprise to see her open up a lot and interact with the host. Thank you for posting this.

It's so weird. Hope has a reputation of being incredibly shy and reserved. But here she sounds warm and cute, even slightly bubbly, made even cuter by the slight nervousness and distractions (that damn coyote lol)

Love everything about Hope, now I can add her lovely voice. Big fan. Not familiar with some of her later work, though.

Great interview.Fun to listen to conversation as usually it's only a recording of a song. A little more personal. Like to stay aware of what Hope is doing creatively..

I've also upped audio of a rare Hope and David (Mazzy Star) interview from 2013 to my other yt Channel, here: ua-cam.com/video/TJaFHGAEFiE/v-deo.html Hope's not as talkative in it as she is in this 2016 one. And the Mazzy Star interview, unlike this one, is full of long, painful silences between questions and answers, especially from David, leaving the poor interviewer, Sylvain, sweating! This Hope & Colm one is more pleasant to listen to, but both interviews are worthwhile and informative. The Mazzy Star one is also much longer. It's 50 minutes.

Jesus that’s embarrassing for Tom Dunne - in the first minute he mispronounces Colm Ó Cíosóig’s name and then gets the name of the MBV song (Soon) wrong too!

If you click on "Show More" under the video, the date is shown in the video description there, Nov. 16, 2016. Your comment's a reminder a lot of people don't check video descriptions, so I've added the date to the title now.

Hermesacat nice, I guess it's like someone else posted surreal to hear hope talk this much, her voice is somewhat different from when she was younger, obviously.

It sounds like she's a bit fed up with David, no? I wonder if there was some odd psychological issue going on where Hope is so introverted (to the point of near aloofness) in her MS interviews with David, but in this interview she's a perfectly pleasant interview. Has anyone who doesn't know her personally ever heard Hope speak so comfortably?

I've collected and archived text of many dozens of Mazzy & Hope print interviews at fan site mazzystar.free.fr (where anyone can read them), and have read them all myself more than once, and she does seem more often more talkative & open in HS&TWI interviews either done by herself or with Colm (for past HS&TWI albums, she did most interviews by herself. In 2016, she's doing most with Colm) than she is in Mazzy Star ones with David. David has said he dislikes interviews and he is often resistant to interviewer questions and is reticent. I'm sure you're right Hope gets influenced by David's own reserved, even grim, manner during interviews, making her less talkative herself. She may even defer to David more in interviews, often allowing him to do most of the talking. These aren't hard and fast rules though. I've read some excellent Mazzy Star interviews too where Hope has opened up a lot, & HS&TWI ones where, in contrast, she doesn't say much at all. Also, the worst stories I've read of Hope being "difficult" in interviews and on stage all date to the 1990s. I suspect she's been mellowing with age some!

Hermesacat I find the aloof interviews beyond annoying. If you're going to act like a jerk, and just sit there staring at the interviewer or letting there be tons of dead air, then just don't do interviews. In fact, with David I find it ironically fake, as much of a self-created image as anything he may think he is trying not to be. To think that being pleasant to another human being who is just doing their job, and is in fact helping you promote your own source of income or passion, is beneath you or would somehow make you less edgy or "deep," is fairly insufferable IMO. I thought the same thing about the ridiculous The Stone Roses interviews back in the day. People would make excuses for them because they loved the first album, and I certainly still love that entire album, but in reality they were just being complete jerks. And it's not like these were 16-year-olds; The Stone Roses were all in their mid to late 20s when their eponymous album was released. Anyway, I will end my rant, and just say that it was refreshing to hear Hope Sandoval interacting with the interviewer as a perfectly normal and decent human being.

Any musical partnership that lasts over many years is bound have creative differences. I assume that a disagreement with David happened before this interview, however they continued working together up until his death.

I don't think it was an act, but if it was so what? Ever seen a Bob Dylan interview? Or John Lennon? Some of the best musicians just don't come across well in interviews, but doing interviews is not their job. It is the music that is important, both recorded, and live. I would never say anything bad about Hope. I think she was and is great.

Tom Dunne - what an embarrassment. He gives the wrong name for a song he describes as one of the greatest songs and then he gets the band name wrong for the album being discussed. Deplorable.
