Hope Sandoval w. Massive Attack + Burial - FOUR WALLS (+ lyrics)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 гру 2017
- A song originally found on a limited edition vinyl e.p. of 1,000 numbered copies released October 2011. This recording of it comes from a digital source recording Massive Attack once made available via their site.
Hope sings lead. She also co-wrote the song, writing lyrics and vocal melody. It's called "Four Walls" 'cause Hope's lyrics include that phrase. We know she co-wrote it partly 'cause some sites cite her as co-writer, and also 'cause that's the way she's said she works with Massive Attack. They send her a music track and she writes lyrics & melody and records it. She said in an interview there are a number of collabs she's done with Massive Attack (aside from "Four Walls," "Paradise Circus," and "The Spoils,") which have not yet ever been released.
Here's Hope's verbatim QUOTE: "Massive Attack and I have written a lot of songs together. I don't know how many already. The group sends me ideas occasionally and asks me if I can add a vocal melody and lyrics, and that's what happened with 'The Spoils'." (Hope from a JNSP interview, Nov. 3, 2016)
Somehow, this 2011 release flew under my radar for 6 years despite it being a popular yt upload at other Channels. But the Channels where the song's popular leave Hope uncredited on it. Her name is not even mentioned there.
I hadn't heard "Four Walls" till a youtuber tipped me off to it today. I think someone else may have tried to tell me about the song a few years back but fear I wrongly thought they were referring only to Burial's remix of "Paradise Circus." I didn't clue in that there was a second song. The e.p. with "Four Walls" also contained Burial's remix of Massive Attack's "Paradise Circus," which Hope also appears on. There's a bit of a mystery sbout the writing credit on Paradise Circus. Hope has a co-writing credit on the song, but Massive did they same song a few years earlier live with a different singer, before Hope was ever involved: same lyrics, similar vocal melody. They must have given Hope a writing credit as a thankyou for singing on the studio version. Burial is the stage name of London electronic musician William Emmanuel Bevan.
Most of the photos of Hope in the slide show are by Hope's (& my) fave photographer of Hope pics, Luz Gallardo.

FOUR WALLS (lyrics via oldielyrics.com + some attempted corrections by me)
They know that I can't settle down
They know but they won't keep me in line, in line
They know that I'll always let them
They know that I'm not that brave
They know that I can't settle down
They know but they won't keep me in line, in line, in line
These four walls have eyes, got lost on the way
They'll own me a while till he thinks that way, till
In line
Last they've killed the light
Don't they save deep pain
Happiness can lie
Remembering all those times
We always wait
In line, in line, in line till we're lost, I forgot
Hope voice is like a goddess leading you through the after life
The youtube rabbit hole goes to some great places.
Yes it does...its created by the Tune Gods..UA-cam just supplies the hole😉🎼🎵

It sure as hell does - down I go

love the rabbit.
I can't believe that I'm just finding out about this collab.
Massive Attack + Burial + Hope Sandoval = Spectacular!!
Sadly, the vinyl that is on discogs is going for at least 1200 to 2000 bucks.
Her marketing and self-promotion is the antithesis of her talent. It really is depressing to me that she isnt more celebrated for her incredible talent.
Try finding out today!😂
I'm proud to be a GenX, the music in the 90s are so artistic from trip hop, grunge to electronic. I saw Massive Attack years ago at Wiltern, L.A. I was over the moon.😘
I was big in the breakbeat scene in Orlando in the 90s which was insane, and legendary!! I grew up in San Bernardino and left in 93 to move to Orlando did a lot of time for GHB and pushed Alot of rolls through club Firestone then moved to Vegas in 2000 and helped promote club utopia bringing Florida breaks there.
Azazel Acheron I did it was downtown Tampa and it was blowing up in the day,98 I think. Partied with a local named Dingo funny I remember his name still. Went with a well known crew from Orlando I kicked it with, blew up all day!!
Azazel Acheron we didn't listen to pop we were about Orlando Tampa breaks!!
Gen X here! I agree.
@Azazel Acheron suffocation and immolation too.the 90s wer sick
This is the kind of track I play on repeat 30 times
Dang it, I just wanted to find a yoga video and now I'm in the rabbit hole of amazing music.
Did you do yoga to this song?
@@k-leb4671 if you call my interpretive dance yoga, sure LOL.
@@carolpoitras5460 nice :) definitely could do yoga to this.. Feeling alive is brilliant! Much love, peace & protection. andria
Nice. Did you find Wonderland? :))
Ha...right on. love and light..
Wow, I'm singing to and dancing around to her music. I just ran into her online a few months ago. I love her voice and music.
Such a masterpiece from the distortion in the beginning, haunting and sadistic in one piece.
Brilliant collaboration. This song takes my breath away. I’m not saying this lightly. Music can affect me in great ways, as I have a type of synesthesia where sound becomes touch and visual. There is nothing more sacred than music + the visual.
I can’t live without this master piece of art … anymore
Massive Attack = National treasure

But I’m in America so:
Massive Attack= World’s treasure
@E C for 30 years I've been searching for music that sounds anything like them. I haven't found any, they are unique, they are the most important band of my life time and I love that I have seen them live more than once. I really wish I had this song on whatever medium it was on
Massive Attack + one of the most gorgeous, and skilled girls around... who could say no?
Qox. X
Ive been a fan of massive attack, and hope sandovell since the age of about twelve. Im 41 this year. And there've just got better with time.

Same here. I can still recall the first time I heard fade into you. It hit me like a ton of bricks but in a good way. Life affirming music. I'm 43. So yeah, early 90's when we first heard them & Massive Attack. We cant go wrong really can we with these bands. Its the shit as the kids these days would say! We used to to be the kids. Now were old bastards! Lol. Where does the time go eh Barry lad? Man I wish I was 17 again! Ah well, nevermind...take care with all this corona virus shit going on. Stay safe man.
I'll be 56 this august...Music is my life...this is awesome!
I just knew her today. She has been always so beautiful
Besides Miss Hope- Princess Hope AKa Mazzy Star with her very sensual and something of a Mystic as well as one of the most Beautiful Vocals.. The introduction and mention here of Massive Attack OMG..! Thanks Much.. I pulled up a Spot Playlist (M.A.) and im TOTALLY blown away with it..! Been along a very long time since ive heard anything comparable as this Music!!
Another convert. Welcome to the fold
There will never be another Hope Sandoval. ...ever.
she's still alive.
Absolut richtig. Ihre Stimme ist Perfektion. Ihre Stimme ist die Stimme der Göttin. Banksy schuldet mir 100 Milliarden Yuhan!
@@hellakooked yes I know.
Maybe with her dna there will can be replicas everywhere?
Hope hasn't too much to do here, are her "vocals" (with effects and distortion) but could be anyone else vocals.
Take my 3 favorite artists, mix it in a music bowl.. Here it is! Wish there were more of these.
Expectations of eternity very great combo of muscians and Hope's sensual beckoning voice it's all so well put together. Thank you for turning me on to this one I have never heard it before.
She is an amazing tallent we all haven't heard enough of....🕊
Genuinely one of Burial’s best ever tracks. That final drone work is just gorgeous
The intro and ending pieces you mean? Yea what style is that it is so captivating
@@BarakYisrael Ambient, probably - some of Tim Hecker’s work like ‘Harmony in Ultraviolet’ and ‘Ravedeath, 1972’ are quite similar
@@DuskAndHerEmbrace13 yea definitely ambient in technical sense. And ty ill check what u named out

@@BarakYisrael Great! The last track on Harmony in Ultraviolet finishes the album so well, with those chords washing over you like waves
Enjoying the moment... just enjoying... Nice being here.... Thankful... and full of joy. 🙏🏻 Stay safe... And fair winds 2 U all!
Adoro esta voz es hipnotica ,hermosamente ensoñadora.
Her voice is out of this world
Females tend to have more of that that is why we love them so much
I love Hope, her voice makes me melt.
I think gifted, somehow, perhaps beyond our understanding, a true prodigy. Fall ye, asleep, to this melody, and dream what spires grow from it.
Very filmic, atmospheric and evocative! A very cool and innovative collaboration.
Hope never ceases to amaze me !! Ive been hooked on her music ever since I moved to Seattle on a cold rainy day in December of 1993. I heard her voice on the radio , and actually had to pull over on the side of the road to listen. Of course the song was Fade into You. I can say I have never experienced that since with any other singer. Hope, thank you .
Richard Young You should listen to California; Into Dust ; Trouble and Rose Blood
haunting
Coolest song ever!
An amazing ensemble! A beautiful voice hovering over Massive's sonic layers, overwhelming, and deconstructed!
Just a great voice. Thanks. Ever since the song "Fade Into You" in 1993, I have been hooked. Thanks.
Collaboration made in heaven and forged between there and earth
this is just magical
She's so beautiful.
God Yes! I LOVE you Hope!
And SO talented!
She reminds me of Mazzy Star ... or maybe it’s vice versa?
@@InertiaCreeps , Hope Sandoval *IS* Mazzy Star, or is their lead singer anyway.
that's the one ;-)
I’m always interested in discovering new Massive attack tracks... and when there’s also Hope Sandoval it’s always something superlative! I disvovered this wonderful one just today... Thank you so much!
Wow. Burial shows up. This is a perfect match. I would love to read an interview how this happened.
It's becaus genious recognizes genious! I know some of Burial's work and he's really amazing and he knows to choose to do do remixes for brilliant music!
Thanks for gathering these notes and lyrics. Incredible that Hope is part of this piece w Burial
this girl is really something great, she always moves me to do something, a feat no human is likely to do
Yea, something like a triple twisting backflip blindfolded, over a pool of Crocodiles while wearing rollerskates and knitting a wooly hat and people are throwing water balloons at you, and you have a hangover and a sprained ankle.
Marvelous
Brilliant, so edgy and nerve jangling, really raw and hypnotic with Hope’s beautiful voice comforting one’s despair
"Massive Hope ~ Holding the Light"
She's so beautiful.
There is Massive Hope for others to continue music fit for the underground.
My gawd, this is what Divine Sensuality must sound like!
This super-ultra-rare album is definitely an amazing collab. but what stands out the most is Hope's dexterity as both song-writer and singer, across genres and styles. The overtly abstract sound and dark is lent life through Hope's mesmerizing vocals.
Truly overwhelming !
@Hermesacat, my most sincere thanks for this upload, specially the backstory and lyrics.
and also, wishing you a Happy New Year!
Thanks, Happy New Year to you Vic Man. Hope today gave fans her own New Year's message via her official (HS&TWI) FB page, QUOTE: "Happy New Year everyone, let's make 2018 a good one!" (-Hope). She posted with it a painting she credits to artist Hilma af Klint.
I agree brother
She is one of the most under appreciated singers....ever
Absolute Mind candy...
One of the greatest thing i ever heard the best from massive and hope
Why was limited to 1000 copies i dont know..
yeah, I'm a bit pissed off I never even heard of this collab - Paradise Circus was great, I love Burial, this is just another dimension
This "song" is a trip....lights down & up volume
sempre amorosa voz...

Thanks for posting. Loved the tidbits on this. Massive Attack is one of my favorite. Hope adds that special glow and brings the song to life.
love it, thanks. Actually have the song on repeat and have played it for 9 hours and now I'm going to play it through sleep

Hauntingly good.
Thank's for the share. Twelve minutes amazing !
Mystical and spheric sounds - I love it!
Super happy you included the lyrics. Amazing song; could've been lost.
Hooooow have I never heard this before today🤯🤯🤯🤯 Hope's voice always puts me in a trance😍😍😍😍😍 love these collabs
Damn same here.
This has fast become my favourite song.
The way Burial transformed Hope's vocals has created a sound reminiscent of Hanz Zimmerman's work in Blade Runner 2049.
Thank you for sharing this!
Brillant 👍👍😜
Her voice generates an inter-dimensional rift that Jim Morrison frequently takes advantage of to keep tabs on us.
Hehe indeed !.Very sad day today David Robuck passing away from Mazzy* .Wish I.had a time machine and could go back to the early 90' s where my apartment smelled of Javan coffee, really great Moroccan hash and Nag Champra incense..better than these dark days .I loathe how plastic and disposable everything has become these days .it's all about image and no substance !
I love you
@@sakikaskas i felt the same..
Yes I was just talking about great hash today Gold seal and Jamaican gum my personal fav , l totally get it , She has this voice that tingles while gripping you on your journey threw each one of her Ballet's . I remember those days of the 90's the best of my life.

Epic sound waves; breaking on a distant beach . Maybe in another universe
Awesome. Thank you!

Hmmm. Explain please
OUTSTANDING SONG
Disturbingly great 👍🏻
nice find - thanks for posting.
Damn i wish MA would go ahead and release those remaining numbers that Hope talked about. Imagine the sonic gems to be heard. Coñoooooo
These "walls" give me ambigous feelings: a terrifying fear and anxious desire...
Real Greatness
This it the vibe we need
or.... the weed ya need
Masssssiveeee.....Que voces tan espectaculares que invitan.
Perfect soundtrack for a pandemic and economic depression. I was hoping for something more on the lines of "The Spoils", which is dark and melancholic but also ethereally gorgeous. I am a long time fan of Massive Attack. This is pushing the boundaries of "dark and moody" into territory I find borderline unlistenable unless I was severely depressed or on drugs. "Butterfly Caught" sounds like an Abba song compared to this. I recently checked out Burial. I love "dark", but it's more like the soundtrack to a horror movie about a pyromaniac than something I would listen to while being quarantined.
are you expecting an apology?

Wow. After all these years after paradise circus I find out hope has a 3rd song with massive attack.. & it's better. Wow.
This song is good but not better than paradise circus
that's debatable
No
