- Part 2 of Hope and David's interview in Montreal. My God, this interview is just way too awkward/weird. I give Hope and David credit for trying to ignore the host's/interviewer's rudeness/attitude as best as they could.

You can tell by her body language, eye movements, the way she answers the questions that is is extremely shy, even by the way David has to half answer the questions. I love how shy she is, such a beautiful and rare trait

Because she's humble and introverted. Much more refreshing than someone constantly in the news and posting social media like the Kartrashians.

she IS very shy, I don't think she likes being on TV at all... very reserved as well and has a bit stage fright, she sometimes loses her temper to the audience because their cheers make her nervous (e.g. the legendary Boston event) Presonally, I wouldn't have her any other way.

yeah, many people have. I've interacted with people who've said she's a "bad person" for it. They don't understand what it's like to suffer chronic crippling shyness.

The Quebecois interviewer is not rude, he just has a slightly high-strung nervous personality,exacerbated by the extra job his network makes him do:
He has to ask a question in English, hear the band's answer, remember it accurately, then turn to the Quebec TV audience & translate it into French. It's a more demanding gig than most interviews entail for the questioner. I'd feel awkward & nervous too!

i wouldn't call the host rude, i think it is simply a translation problem. I am not into fashion, especially women's fashion and looks but damn ladies certainly knew how to dress in the 90s.
its funny hope seems really cute and light-hearted it's hard to believe should make such dark music. not that I'm complaining I love her music I just me and she seems like sweet and kind of innocent and yet her music is so damn deep and haunting

It's funny, so many singers have such a different sound when they speak versus when they project and sing that you wonder how it's possible that it's the same person. Somehow, I imagined she'd sound the same speaking as she does singing and she does! If someone asked me what I think an angel would sound like, Hope would be the first name to come to mind. Truly angelic, both in her demeanor, humility, voice, and looks.

Even though she says the word 'um' before almost every question, I like both her singing voice & her speaking voice. She seems like such a nice person too!
I don't understand your perception of the interviewer. He's not rude at all. Also, the interview wasn't recorded in France but in MusiquePlus studios, in Montreal, Canada.

Her voice is in the same realm with Astrud Gilberto...its like a lullaby on a lazy afternoon...can you picture it? Ya'll need to check out Hope singing for the band Opal...
She can talk or sing the most boring subject matter and it will be mesmerizing. Hope has always been my secret unreachable fantasy. I was born in 1970 and raised in East LA as well, so it's cool to know when I was around back then as a kid, she was nearby in the same small city.

This must date from 1994 as the JAMC-Hope duet "Sometimes Always" single mentioned was already out (released July '94), & the gig can't be from 1995 as there's no record of any Mazzy Star gigs anywhere in 1995. A JAMC gigs list shows JAMC toured North America Oct., Nov., Dec. 1994. I see just one Montreal date listed, Oct. 28, 1994, at Metropolis venue. The "new" Rolling Stones song Hope mentions liking here may be "You Got Me Rocking", released as a single Sept., 1994. It's from the Voodoo Lounge album.

That would be weird talking to this guy, and you tell him all this and stuff and he asks you all this stuff, but then he turns around and talks in a foreign language for like 5 minutes, then turns back to you and starts asking you a whole bunch of questions again.

To justify my perception, I feel the interviewer is rude because he, for no reason at all, asks Hope and David "you don't live together, do you?" Why would it be his business if they did, and why would he ask such an intrusive, irrelevant question? Also, he seems to mock Hope when she talks about why her music is dark with a smirk and a snicker.
Forgive me if those stand out like a sore thumb.

I think it's because he's switching from one language to another. So they're left waiting, not knowing when he'll switch back to English again. Then there's the fact that it's not a private interview. People are talking loudly around them and busy doing whatever so it's maybe hard to hear him. He should have taken them somewhere else.

bondoly66 When “Fade Into You” got big, I remember Hope catching a lot of flack (especially by that annoying Kennedy from MTV) for just standing and singing. She had real bad stage fright on top of her shyness. Atleast she made an effort! I made it through 3 shows of our little band in the 80’s and that dream was over. I found out 10 years later I had bad anxiety. Bless her heart 💜 for getting on the stage at all. She is so adorable. 🕊🎸🥁

There are many people who say they’d love the limelight but I think very few understand what it would be like doing 5 interviews a day, meeting with fans and then performing a show. That private time just gets shrunk down to nothing. Soul just withers. Elliott Smith was another example of this type of artist. The other artists who appear good with fame are usually just good at faking it real well. Hope can’t fake it. As fans, it seems we can’t just appreciate the art. We have to know every living detail of the creator until we are satiated. These questions that are asked are mostly pointless to the art itself.

@krokodilikengur I agree. I saw her last night (27th June 2010) here in Melb, Australia. There was a request that no photography or videos be taken. The start of the show was late, & when the sound crew were ready to start, they had to play 3 tracks to fill time, in the dim lighting, before she came on stage. 1/2 way through the show, 1/2 way through a song, she walked off stage for no reason. Came back on about 20 min later. Played for 20 min, then walked off again. No crowd interaction at all.
It's her show, she can request no photography or videos if she wants. It must be annoying to have constant flashes. Also nothing wrong with her not interacting with the crowd - especially since she's shy.
Wow. Ouch. Touring can wear you the feck out bigtime tho...still. Bummer.

And how about all that clamor in the background? No wonder they hated doing interviews with nabobs like this one in forced and uncomfortable settings like that. And, this is one of the better ones.

Poor girl.. the dang kids nervous as hell even live on stage she hides behind the microphone head down and barely moves.i haven't seen her recently but I hope age and the wisdom that comes with it helped her gain confidence and she no longer fears a crowed!:(

She's so alluring and so lovely. I mean to listen to and look at. Her voice and looks make you day dream about her. She has zero personality though. She's one of those deep thinkers so it's not her fault. I wish I had not heard her speak it ruined the fantasy.

If the shyness is just an act, she's a very good actress. Being cold and stand-offish, and chronically shy are not always the same thing. That said, it's disappointing hearing negative stories about her behavior. You would hope someone like that would be beautiful both inside and out.
A lot of times they just hate interviews because they ask the same questions over and over again. Most of the time the reporter doesn't know a dam thing about the band and ask out dated questions.
breeeegs I think she is a genuinely introverted person and this does not translate well in the media world unfortunately, especially in the western world where extroversion is valued more than introversion. Some people are inherently shy, sensitive and pick up on more in their environment than others rendering them with a disposition that may appear "cold" but in actuality, they are much warmer inside.
+breeeegs She had the looks, the voice, and the it factor. Unfortunately she also had mental issues which kept her from being bigger than any female singer from the 90s. Still, you can see that Lana Del Rey got most of her vulnerable cute girl act from Hope.

+Strannnge Lana feigns shyness because likes the image of being mysterious, but because it's a lie it obviously annoys people. Her bad performance on TV wasn't a part of the act - she just isn't very good at singing live.
