Beautifully restored. Original paint, original decals, original nickel plating, the definitive typewriter restoration video. The No 5 is one of the most beautiful Olivers ever made, it’s also the last model to be produced in Thomas Oliver’s lifetime. Would love to see you take on a No 3, there are many out there waiting to be brought back to life.
I am in awe of the skilled it takes to break down and reassemble something of this complexity. But then, when I think of the people who engineered this device originally, in an age before computer aided drawings, when everything had to be done with paper and pencil. I can just imagine the complexity of the patent drawings alone. I’m just amazed at what it took to conceive, design, build, and now restore something like this. My hat is off to you!
the greatest thing about Olivers is that they are actually pretty simple machine to disassemble an reassemble which make them an even more remarkable design when compared to others. They are a good entry level to typewriter restoration
Now THIS is a restoration video. Not that other BS of everything from a viking axe to a Hot Wheels Hummer that somehow aged exactly the same way. Well done sir. Great work and result.
How many typewriters do you have to restore to reach this level of expertise? So many components! So many screws! So many ways to get it wrong! Lovely work. Also the typeface on this model is gorgeous.
I just found my first Oliver typewriter. I’d love to restore it but after watching this amazing tutorial ( I know I’d lose by step three lol. Fun to watch ( I'm going to keep watching! ) again and again and again!
Nice! Part of the skill of restoration is to find items in the right condition to restore. You chose this one well, with good paintwork with a nice (not too far gone) patina. The end result is a beautiful item that still shows age, but with clean mechanical parts. Not over-restored!
That is definitely a unique typewriter indeed. I have never seen one like that before. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Super excellent work.
Im trying to follow this to disassemble an Oliver 5 of my own. I'm surprised to see that the Oliver paint job can survive the degreaser. It certainly makes cleaning the thing up look easy when you can just blast all the parts with the same can.
The big slotted screw at 21:13 can be restored by peening the metal back into place. People often file off the burrs but it's better to gently cold work the material back into place. Then, use the correct size screw driver. That's a tall order these days. Slotted screws were not always standardized and some drivers were probably special service tools, specific to the manufacturer. I usually resort to Chapman and use minimum gronk. Thanks for posting the video.
I have an Oliver similar to the one in the video. My grandfather gave me when I was 10. It sat in a damp basement for over 40 years. Now I want to clean and restore it, but there is surface rust on all the keys. If I took it all apart like in the video, I'd never get it back together.
I’m impressed with the attention to detail in this video, but because closed captions have been blocked (honestly, who cares about the deaf viewers, right? /s), I have no idea if there was any commentary or if it was presented as a “wordless workshop” type video.
I got an Oliver No. 9 I'm working on right now. What kind of cleaning products did you use on which parts? I'm really curious since they're both so similar.
An interesting video but it would have been nice to have an audio description of what you are doing and what the different parts are & do, for non typewriter folk.
I mainly used very diluted simple green for the body. Sometimes I use WD-40 at the end to give it a nice shine. It shouldn’t mess with the paint as long as you don’t scrub too hard.
@TypewriterRestorations Got it. I also have an Oliver office case for the typewriter. Do you think the diluted green would work for that, too? Also, diluted with water, right?

I like that you kept the original paint and just cleaned it up. Great work🙌🏼.

@joekirsten you might like wristwatch revival also.
This is an awesome repair.
Wonderful job. Appreciate the natural sounds with no music during the restoration.

For reference I've worked on maybe two dozen machines or so, and I still can't do anything close to this.
Wow, that was satisfying... and only had to break out the wire wheel once! Makes me miss my old Olivers

That is some meticulous work, great resto job 👍
Thank you!
More complicated than a suisse watch! Love it.
Фантастика. Это волшебство. Мой восторг.
Thank you for this, I just updated my platen on this and was having one hell of a time putting the right side of the carriage back together lol
wouaaahhhh !
merveilleux travail !
félicitations bravo !
Wonderfil work, now if i could only find someone as talented to work on my vintage typewriter and my ibm selectype ii. You are very talented.

How did it go?? Now considering doing that exact thing myself
I'm so jealous of people who can take apart and put together machines and not totally screw it up.
That's great! Always good to see that there is no witchcraft in this things
Definitely a unique look and letter key mechanism for sure
It looks like some sort of torture device taken apart but a masterpiece together.👍
Great restoration job, I need to restore a Royal 10 that needs little more depth than that one. Excellent job.
Good job, glad you knew where everything went putting it back together again.
This would be a 100 part video on TikTok! Beautiful work dude and thank you
Nice to see something different. There's a limit to how many knives, Tonka toys and coffee-makers I can get excited about. Liked and sub'd.
I would love to know your method of keeping track of all of the screws and pieces…
Super professional top player.
What a great restoration 😃😃
Awesome work 👏
Thank you! 🙏
@@TypewriterRestorations you welcome.
You did a wonderful job

That is very complex design. The time it took to build and design that.
Shame stuff built today won't be around as long as this machine

Damn fine work.
Keep it up good luck!

Vintage ❗☺
Congratulations
Excelente trabajo de restauracion, me gustó q no quitaras su pintura original.

I have exactly this question too
Perhaps you could also add some theremin music when you use the ultrasonic thing.
An interesting video but it would have been nice to have an audio description of what you are doing and what the different parts are & do, for non typewriter folk.
And captions enabled too for deaf people - I'd been wondering whether there was any narration, but I couldn't check due to captions being disabled.
Awesome job! What kind of black paint did you use to restore the 'T' 5 key at the 19:11 mark in the vid? TIA!
Thanks! I used basic acrylic paint.
Wouldn’t it be interesting ro remake a typewriter like this and a matching period adding machine and turn them into a computer keyboard.
What model ultrasonic cleaner? Thanks.
Good Day! What did you use to polish the Oliver typewriter and make it shiny? Thanks!
Hi, did you use WD-40 during the 8 minute mark? Does it mess up the paint in any way? Thanks! 😊

Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. Easy peasy. 😂
How do you remove rust? Mine has a lot of rust?
Is that normal color at 19:22 for the keys?
Antone ego write in this machine not?
La vendes
imposible de montar todo otra vez sin tener referencias ni fotos. FAKEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
y si le borrabas todos los logos con esa burrada que hiciste??? nada feliz
Cleaned not restored, B.S click bait
Cleaning is not restoring
