That is amazing how you restored that old typewriter. Even more amazing is how you remembered which parts go to their own proper places. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work.

I recently found an Underwood 4 Bank Portable on eBay for a very reasonable price of around $40. Won the auction for it and was very excited to restore her. I appreciate that you have so many videos of typewriter restorations! I've noticed that quite a lot of them use many similar concepts for their construction, with a few quirks here and there. Really, the only noticeable differences are how they come apart. Core components all seem practically identical, but one particular manufacturer of one specific model might have screws in places others don't. That sort of thing.
My particular typewriter, surprisingly, worked mostly out of the box. It had a few gummy type bars, but nothing some degreasing couldn't resolve. It of course is very rickety and stiff from rusting, and the 100 years of significant oil/grime build up on loads of parts. But I was very surprised to see that even the original drawstring is 100% intact. Either way, it looks realistically feasible to clean these things up so they're like brand new again, without needing access to expensive machinery. I look forward to meticulously tearing her down to restore her to better-than-factory conditions. I've been repairing small electronics for nearly a decade, soldering tiny circuits under a microscope. Keeping track of complicated, small parts is right up my alley.
Something I was thinking of doing was stripping all of the painted and plated components, and simply blueing them. Have you ever experimented with this? My dad used to be a gunsmith and I grew up around a lot of the metallurgical stuff he would do to firearms. I would think that blueing many of the parts of a typewriter would actually work very well as opposed to trying to re-plate them with nickel or paint them black. Stripping already plated components would be a bit dangerous as you'd have to work with sulfuric acid, but that's much easier to get a hold of than a setup to re-plate with nickel. I imagine blueing would give equal protection for those parts compared to plating, and would be a far more accessible alternative to restoring those kinds of components.
Also, in regards to stripping painted components, I was wondering if you had any knowledge about the safety of this. I think the whole world knows that things produced in the early 20th century had an awful lot of unsafe materials. It wouldn't surprise me if the painted parts of typewriters used lead paint, and I imagine stripping paint like this would require specific handling and disposal procedures. Do you have any information about that?

Incredible piece of machine and restoration. I have used typewriters in our school when I was young. Going back I wish I could have invested more although my family never had the financial capacity to purchase it that time. But still I am glad to have been on that time and experience it.

It's a very nice typewriter, but I am curious about one thing. I don't see a 1 key on the keyboard.

Hi, please excuse my English, I'm not very good at it. I just bought a Royal Classic manual printer, but when I press the keys they don't show up well on the paper, I placed the ribbon correctly. If I press the keys a little hard you can see them better, but not always. Is this because the ribbon is not very good or could it be a problem with the machine? I need help to know if I should change it.
