That's a great idea! I think I'll do that in my next playthrough, I have a stack of Nintendo Power magazines on my bookshelf...I'll remember to grab the issue with Super Mario Galaxy on the cover (that one has Starmen.Net featured in the community section)!
I think i once spent 30 minutes waiting at the door cause i didn't talk to the one Mr. Saturn that i needed to before going up there.
Oh no, that can happen? That's really funny, I wonder how many first time players have asked or looked up what you're supposed to do and ignored that Mr. Saturn 😅
@@ThaneGaming yea, i think it was my third or fourth time playing it way back when i was a kid in the 90's and was pretty confident that i didn't need to read every little thing in the strategy guide. In the section For Saturn Valley, i think it says to talk to that one in particular or to all of the Mr. Saturns. I went into the village, got whatever new equipment and health items I needed, talked to a few who gave me items, and then headed to the falls to wait. After about 5 minutes nothing happened so i stepped out of the falls and back in like 5 or 6 times waiting around 5-6 minutes each and nothing ever popped up. Then i went back and talked to every Mr. Saturn i could several times and went back to wait at the falls and it finally let me in.
I'm glad the Mr. Saturns' dialogue is all entertaining and stands out so much that a new player likely won't miss the hint, but I never thought about this game design choice being punishing for returning players who've already made it through the game and just want to progress faster! @@sparkax
This reminds me of a time I was watching my brother play this game. He had been playing it for a while but then took a long break from it and came back to this point. We knew you had to stand by the waterfall for awhile to wait for it to open but when we did it nothing happened. We kept trying to do it and spent far more than 3 minutes on it. It turns out he had actually already cleared Master Belch's lair before he took a break from the game and had forgotten about it. He was just stuck waiting at the waterfall for a long time, wondering what he was doing wrong, good times.
When you actually get to this part in EarthBound, how do you spend the 3 minutes? Do you use the restroom, get a drink, make instant noodles, meditate, or something else?
The first time i played, i actually watched the whole thing because i kept expecting random things to show up or important text boxes to appear. But every subsequent playthrough is just me on my phone
Coffee/ramen preparation. Or a need to stretch my legs and have a cigarette, I'd usually rate that a five minute thing.
Incidentally, I've long been able to measure my cigarette smoking with MGS3's extraordinarily long ladder.
I can remember doing the same thing the first time I played, and being kind of amazed that there isn't anything and the game really does just want you to wait 😅 funnily enough, by complete coincidence, Ness's dad called just before Belch let me into the factory in my most recent playthrough, and I was scared to answer because I wasn't sure if that'd restart the nearly 3 minutes I had already waited...but you have to answer and listen to his spiel about taking breaks. Thankfully it didn't count! @@koemon_exe
Yep! Coffee break for me. I guess in Japan, waiting 3 minutes exactly is very much associated with preparing instant ramen, so there's official merchandise that references it, and fans commemorate the scene by sketching noodle-related art which is pretty funny. I haven't played MGS3 yet, so I had to look up the ladder--that's kind of cool the game makes you do something mundane to advance, and (I'm assuming) you have to provide an input so you can't just walk away. That's a great way to make the player reflect, and I'm sure Itoi would appreciate the design! I do plan on picking up the MGS collection that just came out on Switch (probably when there's a sale), but there's already so many other good games I have to play... @@locke103
@@ThaneGaming kojima has his quirks, for sure. the metal gear franchise is just full of a lot of nuance that i imagine you'll enjoy.
but still, that ladder... i remember a time when i could smoke indoors. the ladder, from start to finish, was a full cigarette even at the slow rate i (tend to) smoke.
The Mr. Saturn icon is sadly not real…but finally, some actual good content!
Did nintendo ever give anything mother related for avatars? I have all of the nes/snes ones and nothing from 1 and 2... Idk if i missed some
@@StarmenRock Sadly, it isn't real...it's a photo of a Mr. Saturn plush from Hobonichi's website I shopped in. It's just me wishing I had a MOTHER series avatar! I know the icons are only PNGs, but I do grab as many new ones as I can and I loved all of the NES/SNES/N64 ones

Yes it is, I really wish it were real though 😭 I used a picture of the "melt your heartstrings" Mr. Saturn on the Hobonichi website

I love that Mr. Saturn and the smaller plush that includes their house! I sadly only have one item from the shop (the first Pollyanna comic), but if there were no shipping costs I'd more inclined to buy up everything lol. The Hobonichi MOTHER project is wonderful--when I do (hopefully) travel to Japan in the future, I don't think I'll have any control seeing this stuff in person
