Facts are facts! I've returning Western friends who feel at home in Malaysia, and they max their 3-month visa. In the earlier years they regarded Malaysia as a border run.... now coming here is the home run.
The Malaysian airlines short code MH was marketed as Malaysian Hospitality. We used to be really proud of that. We are still proud of our hospitality. But we used to, too.
I read your comment & immediately laughed because the last 3 sentences of it were said the exact same way a famous American stand-up comedian, Mitch Hedberg, would deliver one of his signature joke punchlines !! 😄😄😄
If your car breaks down on the highway, the most helpful are the humble motorcyclists. They'll immediately stop, ask what's the problem, help push the car to the road shoulder, pluck some leafy tree branches (in lieu warning triangle 😅) and place them a distance behind the car, direct all other vehicles for smooth traffic flow, etc. Happened to me on the very chokeful Sg Besi highway at peak evening hour and in the rain at that! A couple of them waited with me until the tow truck came more than an hour later. Then totally refused money offered to them. I think Malaysians who have had their car breaking down can relate similar experiences.
Really going to miss KL. Off to Hanoi tomorrow then back home to Canada. KL is my Favorite city in Asia. I will come back for sure. Da Nang is fantastic as well.
Awesome, I'd really like to visit Hanoi, I think it looks like such a cool city with an interesting culture. Curious to hear if you like it more than KL after your trip
Hanoi is a very nice place to visit. Would not want to live in Hanoi or Ho Chi Min. Too hectic as nobody obeys traffic laws. Da Nang is like a different country with in Vietnam. Very clean and laid back with a great beach. Very modern. Not a party place at all. Great place to visit with your family. Not full of massage parlors. But KL is a top class first world city with a great cost of living. KL would be my first choice to live but I would visit Da Nang often as the flights are cheap to get there ex KL.

@@benfishermin Great place to explore and to eat! I used to live in Kuantan near Teluk Chempedak (for 2 years) and I love there too. Lots of sands and sea! Love it!
4:22 tbh, we are not "extra nice" 😅 it's just who we are to everyone, it's a Malaysian trait, really. Regardless of your race or religion. And by now, you should already know Malaysian's love language is FOOD and feeding people some good food. We don't realise how much of a different we behave or communicate, compared to our neighbouring countries, because we think everyone behave, just like we do 😅 And to add to it, we don't know how to scam people or create any hoax like some countries are popular with. We are raised to excel in studies and have good manners and we practise it since young, to everyone . in short, we are color blind 😅 we treat everyone like family.
Yea it’s true. It’s a shame there are immigrants that scam tourists, I’ve come across so many scammers in KL and Penang at this point, approaching me in the street, but of course they were all foreign and not Malaysian.
@@benfishermin i usually go swimming at Kelana Jaya swimming pool. RM3 per entry. Or Hiking at Gasing hill in the rain. Adrenaline rush is just way better.
You're right! Penang and Malaysia is a hot and humid place to live. Staying outdoors in the afternoons is unbearable unless there are trees to provide shade. Malaysians have no choice but stay indoors most of the time. That's why we have so many malls and that's where our time is mostly spent. I agree that the hot weather here is the biggest drag in an otherwise beautiful country.
If you have time go to the rural areas or less develop areas you will experience how friendly the old folks.... mixed with the local especially during local festive season of any of the races/culture
It's never the same when living in a foreign country. Eventually, you'll get used to your new environment. Just ensure that all your expectations are realistic.
It's true, I still need to travel quite frequently to keep things interesting, I think this will happen anywhere I live. At least each time I leave for a week I'm really excited to come back.
yea i am 20 years old i am looking for and new life in asia eu is going down not best plays dus i hope i find my plays in asia soon os malaysia good for young ppl or ?
Malaysia is such an underrated destination for Westerners. There's too much focus on Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Korea etc. to the point it's really difficult to even find Malaysian restaurants in many Western cities. Malaysia is just overlooked and you'll find very few people who even know where Malaysia is. Luckily, I've been coming to Malaysia for work for the past 12 years and it's amazing. Locals are friendly and keep to themselves, and it's not as chaotic as most other South East Asian nations. Most of all, hands down Malaysia has probably some of the best food in the world, especially when it comes to diversity. But don't expect any form of customer service lol
I agree, in all of my years in the US I never came across a Malaysian restaurant. Even in NYC you’re only gonna find some kind of fusion like Japanese-Malaysian cuisine. Yea some of the best food in the word here for me. The customer service part is true, especially since most restaurants are foreign workers with no English capabilities!
I don't know what happened to our weather.. we have rain almost every month now.. I just can't imagine back in the 70/80s where Malaysia is amongst the top world contributers to rubber.. You can't tap rubber in this kind of weather.. more water than rubber in your cup.. 😊
that guy, like you, is probably waiting for the rain to stop too. and i think he finds you a bit weird- who is this foreigner talking to himself in front of this building?? guess he is just as curious about you as you are about him. 😂 enjoy penang.🙂
We are really low key, when I was studying in UK the brits don't realise there's a country between Singapore & Thailand. Having lived in Bangkok, I still think Msian food is the best with our broad variety of cuisines. I just think we are poor in marketing our country & culture overseas.
Depending where you go they will not put you on a pedestal... They will stare at you and look at you and wonder why you're there.. They will try speaking English with you... Strike up a conversation... Great people are easy to make friends with..
I've experienced it quite a bit, getting confused looks from people, mostly in the areas that just don't get many western visitors it's like people have seen a ghost. I know they don't mean anything negative by it and if I do smile or say something, they are happy to do the same
Yes Ben , especially when you are at where only locals live, outskirts or other states , as local myself. My thoughts will be how come you are here .😂 We thought u are lost or something @@benfishermin
ben.. Thailand and Malaysia and the rest of mainland south east Asia like Vietnam or Cambodia will treat all western foreigner as equal.. except in the Philippines and the Indian subcontinent.. they have appalling inferiority complex with the US American or British.. some call it a ''Stockholm syndrome'' their cruel colonial past.. and also due to their extreme rural poverty.. they see all Caucasian from these country as super rich.. the poorer countries of SEA like Laos.. Vietnam or Cambodia do not have this complex.. as they manifest a different history due to their Buddhist philosophy.. but most people in SEA are also very nationalistic.. the upper classes in Thailand and Malaysia see the new generation of westerners as rather shabby and feel quite sorry for them.. just be careful when you are dealing with people in Malaysia.. most are not Malaysian.. most of the scammers are most definitely not Malaysian.. that would include the beggars.. some of them earn more money begging than doing a full days job..
Yes I believe this to be true. And in my experience so far I've had probably 4-5 scammers attempt something in the streets here, all of them were non Malaysians, and every single one approached me in a way that I knew what they were doing immediately.
On the subject of how Americans help each other in the US, I heard somewhere (and correct me if I'm wrong) that there's a difference between how you're treated in the East Coast and West Coast. Say you have a flat tyre. If that happened to you on the East Coast, people are "helpful but rough", they'll stop and help you change the flat but you'll get an earful of how silly you were for not being better prepared, etc. On the West Coast, apparently people are "nice but not helpful", they'll probably say they're sorry it happened to you but they won't stop to help 😂 Is there any truth to this? 🤔
It's a yes & no if foreigners are treated equally here..Westerners attract attention & special treatments at certain times for gains, certain entrance fees may be higher than those for locals. At the same time I do agree there is some humanity in the way we deal with situations & people but it's not that great, I have seen way better in certain other parts of the world.
Well I have received comments about how all Malaysians are not necessarily treated equal, and that there's a big difference to the way Malay people interact with Malay people versus how Malay people may interact with other kind of Malaysians. Do you find this to be true?
I was wondering how far this is true for a Western English-speaking foreigner coming to SEA countries. Do you feel, for lack of a better word, superior especially when the natives with their exotic ways and language sort of look up to you? And with the favorable currency exchange rate, that can be quite an ego trip
In Thailand and Indonesia you will 100% feel this. And the Philippines although I’ve not been there yet. In Malaysia though you won’t feel this in the slightest, it feels like you’re treated the same as everyone (although they will definitely treat you better than Bangladeshis and Indonesians). I bet a lot of the reason foreigners choose to stay in Thailand or Philippines is because they enjoy the ego trip 😁😁 attention is nice of course but you don’t want to get lost in it
Wondering Ben, why some Americans keep complaining this one is not like they want or they used to. And they keep complaining hoping that Malaysia should work in American way. This is not American. I can't understand that.
Not many Americans know where Malaysia is. They know about Singapore, though. Again, not many Americans had travel overseas. Back in 1990, only 5% of Americans had a passport. Today, that no is 48%. Perhaps, majority Americans were thinking that U.S. is the greatest country & they need not have to travel to anywhere else. Most stayed as Hillbillies ....until in recent years, more Americans are travelling abroad.
Yep it’s true, I knew nothing about Malaysia even after visiting other places in Southeast Asia for long periods. Sadly we don’t have much knowledge about things outside of America, and most people will simply travel to Florida, or they’ll go to Mexico, somewhere reasonably close basically
@@benfishermin It's commendable that you took the risks to travel & explore further out of the U.S. Travel can help broaden the horizons/mind. When we travel, we leave behind the familiar & take on a world of new things. We're constantly learning through travel, with new cultures, friends, foods & languages. 👍
i think that ‘dodgy’ guy was same as u bro.. got caught in the rain n didn’t carry umbrella… he must’ve been trying to hide his face or something by pretending to be so interested in reading whatever he was reading…. or maybe he knows u bt shy to approach u… 🤣🤣🤣.. honestly i don’t know… there..!! ur second dodgy character in malaysia…. 🤣🤣🤣 i guess being caught between singapore.. bali n thailand… malaysia kinda got lost… recently saw a vlog by an american girl in singapore… she was like first time in southeast asia… n here she was mentioning her planned vacation.. first singapore .. then bangkok before ending it in bali… tough luck for malaysia… gd news is as u’re one of the not so many western tourist here.. u get the whole place for urself… 😅😅

It's true, our biggest challenge is the climate / weather. Other than that, we're alright!
Yea besides the weather everything is great 😄😄
I saw a guy jumping up and down and peeping through the window :)
Love Penang!
Me too, it's one of my favorite places in Malaysia
@@benfishermin Great place to explore and to eat! I used to live in Kuantan near Teluk Chempedak (for 2 years) and I love there too. Lots of sands and sea! Love it!
Hope you come back to Malaysia live permanently.😊
Happened in Malaysia when Chinese and Indian arguing due to their car accident, then come one malay guy give his money to settle down.
Come n visit our state of sarawak bro you're welcome❤
Thanks I will definitely visit 😄
4:22 tbh, we are not "extra nice" 😅 it's just who we are to everyone, it's a Malaysian trait, really. Regardless of your race or religion. And by now, you should already know Malaysian's love language is FOOD and feeding people some good food.
We don't realise how much of a different we behave or communicate, compared to our neighbouring countries, because we think everyone behave, just like we do 😅
And to add to it, we don't know how to scam people or create any hoax like some countries are popular with. We are raised to excel in studies and have good manners and we practise it since young, to everyone . in short, we are color blind 😅 we treat everyone like family.
Yea it’s true. It’s a shame there are immigrants that scam tourists, I’ve come across so many scammers in KL and Penang at this point, approaching me in the street, but of course they were all foreign and not Malaysian.
instead of planning according to the weather, I make sure my plan include the weather itself as part the fun.
Well if you found a fun way to incorporate heavy humidity or rain into plans I’d love to hear more 😅
@@benfishermin i usually go swimming at Kelana Jaya swimming pool. RM3 per entry. Or Hiking at Gasing hill in the rain. Adrenaline rush is just way better.
Ben - you need to try: i) Roti Canai, ii) char tay keow and iii) teh tarik
These 2 meals and 1 drink are an absolute must before you leave Malaysia.
Thanks, but I have food allergies so no milk, gluten, sugar, soy
@@benfishermin Char quay tow uses rice noodles and contains seafood. Cantonese mee also a good one. Chicken rice. Nasi goreng.
Rice noodles are apparently gluten free.
Yea nowadays I try to avoid the peak times unless I absolutely need to film something!
IF you come with an open mind, you find an open heart.
That's true, thanks
Hows rain becomes a problem. Its a bless
If you have time go to the rural areas or less develop areas you will experience how friendly the old folks.... mixed with the local especially during local festive season of any of the races/culture
So, like, yeah. So the road situation has me every so slightly confused🤔I might be overly focused on it🤔
Dide, youre makingblamket stayements about America, as a New Yorker. Do you get that its a big complex country?
It's never the same when living in a foreign country. Eventually, you'll get used to your new environment. Just ensure that all your expectations are realistic.
It's true, I still need to travel quite frequently to keep things interesting, I think this will happen anywhere I live. At least each time I leave for a week I'm really excited to come back.
@@benfishermin That's wonderful. Always on the positive outlook. 😀
yea i am 20 years old i am looking for and new life in asia eu is going down not best plays dus i hope i find my plays in asia soon os malaysia good for young ppl or ?
thats a quick trip to Thailand
Yea I spent 1 full week in Bangkok which was nice!
You beat me Rosie
Haha! Penang is great
Bro you should went to straits quay in penang the place is beautiful
Thanks I need to pay a visit
Here we go..
Here we are
On the subject of how Americans help each other in the US, I heard somewhere (and correct me if I'm wrong) that there's a difference between how you're treated in the East Coast and West Coast.
Hi Ben, I'm curious.. whats your vlog gear?
Hey I use an iPhone 13 Pro Max and a cheap selfie stick
@@benfishermin did you do much editing to your videos?
Malaysians are rudimentary nice, and the country is rudimentary modern..😅
❤❤❤
This looks like Penang
Still in Penang? A new record.😂
Yep still here lol, slowing it down a bit
I was wondering how far this is true for a Western English-speaking foreigner coming to SEA countries. Do you feel, for lack of a better word, superior especially when the natives with their exotic ways and language sort of look up to you? And with the favorable currency exchange rate, that can be quite an ego trip
In Thailand and Indonesia you will 100% feel this. And the Philippines although I’ve not been there yet. In Malaysia though you won’t feel this in the slightest, it feels like you’re treated the same as everyone (although they will definitely treat you better than Bangladeshis and Indonesians). I bet a lot of the reason foreigners choose to stay in Thailand or Philippines is because they enjoy the ego trip 😁😁 attention is nice of course but you don’t want to get lost in it
@@benfishermin Thanks for the clarification 😁
6:21 whats up with that guy at the back. Dancing without music.
Wondering Ben, why some Americans keep complaining this one is not like they want or they used to. And they keep complaining hoping that Malaysia should work in American way. This is not American. I can't understand that.
🧡🧡🤟🤟
@@benfishermin
It's commendable that you took the risks to travel & explore further out of the U.S. Travel can help broaden the horizons/mind. When we travel, we leave behind the familiar & take on a world of new things. We're constantly learning through travel, with new cultures, friends, foods & languages. 👍
Actually, they dont put you on a pedestal for no reason, they do it cause they either want $$$$ or a green card. Glad Malaysia is not like that.
I'm gonna be in Pattaya in first of Aug. I just cant stand America anymore.
Awesome, I love Pattaya 😎
If a hot chick's car breaks down in Malaysia, I am sure we will stop immediately 😀
Haha I bet this is true in every single country
If you run over a chick that try to cross the road, I'm pretty sure you'll just drive on like nobody's business.. 😂✌
10:50
Carring might be the word 😅
Practically the whole rest of the world is unknown to Americans barring London, Paris etc 😂 Travel more Americans.
Yep 100% we know next to nothing about the world outside of our bubble
i think that ‘dodgy’ guy was same as u bro.. got caught in the rain n didn’t carry umbrella… he must’ve been trying to hide his face or something by pretending to be so interested in reading whatever he was reading…. or maybe he knows u bt shy to approach u… 🤣🤣🤣.. honestly i don’t know… there..!! ur second dodgy character in malaysia…. 🤣🤣🤣
i guess being caught between singapore.. bali n thailand… malaysia kinda got lost… recently saw a vlog by an american girl in singapore… she was like first time in southeast asia… n here she was mentioning her planned vacation.. first singapore .. then bangkok before ending it in bali… tough luck for malaysia… gd news is as u’re one of the not so many western tourist here.. u get the whole place for urself… 😅😅
That guy behind you is really weird....
Haha really wasn’t sure what he was doing
