  • Picking as fast as I can staying decently clean, and playing 7th arpeggios in E Minor. 2-1-2 arpeggios are nice to practice for economy picking.

    Wow this is really great stuff! - you are not afraid of the exercises and necessary work to have control over the notes and articulation - you have awesome tools already :) As you develop your own unique voice on the instrument (and others) you won't have many technical limitations - you have been studying The Right Things :)

    After watching some of your stuff, I might start uploading general practice to UA-cam too. I've been playing for about 11 years, but you've shown a lot more dedication than I have, which is probably why you're so much better than I am right now. Keep up the good work; you're an inspiration.

    Hey I like you’re shredding the only thing i noticed which is a downside is you’re not utilising you’re pinky as frequently as the other three fingers and I don’t mean any offence in any way shape or form but you would be able to hit a lot more further away notes utilising the forth finger on the fret board

      I use my pinky finger usually for arpeggios, or when I’m on the lower point of the neck where it’s awkward to stretch your other fingers for things, since the frets are bigger.

    @firestorm3059 3 місяці тому +4

    how do you study? what do you practice?

    • @JacobGenestGuitar
      @JacobGenestGuitar  3 місяці тому +6

      My practice has always been improvising over a backing track for fun, but since I like to shred a lot, it’s basically technique practice since I’m doing it so much. I don’t really study the scale shapes, I kind of already have them down from improv. The arpeggios are harder. The reason improvising has helped me so much is because it benefits technique since I shred a lot during my improv, so I get cleaner, it helps me to pick better notes too, because when you make mistakes a lot, you start to fix them and pick more good notes.

    Great progress,but learn how to use your pinky, it's a must.Just because it feels hard and uncomfortable doesn't mean you should avoid doing it

    • @JacobGenestGuitar
      @JacobGenestGuitar  2 місяці тому +2

      Yeah I just do a lot of 3 nps picking stuff where I don’t need it. I usually use my pinky’s for all arpeggios, and I switch my ring finger out for my pinky when the 3nps scale is on the side of the neck closer to the head of the guitar, since the frets are much bigger. But when I’m playing where the frets get smaller, my fingers get too crowded when I’m doing 3 notes per string patterns, especially when the patterns are so close together.

      @@JacobGenestGuitar I recently started doing that three finger playing as well lol,I'm your total opposite I always use my pinky.But there are some licks that just require your technique.Just find a balance between both, that's the best way.by the way the synchro is a lot better when using that finger combination than using your pinky.I realized that when I first learned yngwie's triplets one string pattern

    • @JacobGenestGuitar
      @JacobGenestGuitar  3 місяці тому +1

      I use economy for my 2-1-2 arpeggios, which is 2 on 1 string, 1 on the next, then 2 again on the last, which is shown here with the 7th arpeggios. I use economy on all of my descending scale runs too. It definitely allows me to go faster without worrying about my fretting and picking hand line up.

  • @golgothapro
    @golgothapro 2 місяці тому +1

    I've Been looking at the S for years now and though I'm sure my neck-hand is fast enough and I understand the concepts of economy picking, pick slanting. and all that, I still don't get it. I can only watch one hand at the time so I watch the picking one which is doing the S I don't understand. You came up under one, went down on the next under it, and then down on the next under that one. That's three F-ing hits so you're supposed to get 9 notes out of that ? One to three notes a strike ? It's always hammered on triads too ? What's that 2-1-2 mean ? Is that a string striking pattern or two notes on one sting, one on the next, and then two more on the one after that ? What's really going on here ? LOL Gimmie the skinny man cause I am confused as F ! I don't quite understand the objective, what I'm supposed to be trying to do.

    • @JacobGenestGuitar
      @JacobGenestGuitar  2 місяці тому +1

      2-1-2 is just a pattern for 7th arpeggios. So for example, 2 on the E string, 1 on the A string, 2 on the D string, etc. all the other stuff like pick slanting, I’m not sure about as I don’t ever look at the pick slanting.

      if you can't economy pick and you're just legatoing this kinda stuff, I wouldn't say you're doing it more clean dude. There are huge number of 3nps runs here where he's picking every note which pretty much requires economy picking or 2-way pickslanting.
