    Quick update... I followed this and was able to dual boot my Legion Go. Super easy. Only thing was Windows wouldn't let me split the hard drive halfsies. So I had to hunt down a full featured app that actually did the job. I finally found and used Paragon Partition Manager Community Edition. It's free, so yeah, this isn't an ad. haha.
    Thanks for this walkthrough! My Go is so snappy and easy to use now.

    26:41 For the majority of the games you can actually skip this without any performance issues since the mesa (and amdgpu) render pipeline got reworked late last year which removed the really bad stuttering from live compiling the shaders, this is also in SteamOS :) if you do however notice any stutters then you can go back and let it compile the shaders before playing (1 time thing unless there is a shader update through steam).
    Also we do co-operation with ChimeraOS quite often and we contribute back and forth between the projects, in the end everyone benefits which means everyone wins! 😄

    • @Bushidounohana
      @Bushidounohana 5 місяців тому

      @@EthanG45 in my humble opinion-pretty solid! Do checkout Bazzite’s handheld wiki for specific steps after installation to ensure a smooth experience, but once you take those steps, it’s pretty flawless on the software side. My Steam Deck (original model LCD) has been collecting dust, in fact, ha! Just be aware that the advertised 7500 MT/s RAM speeds on the 2024 model are hit and miss, mine was a miss and stuck at 6400 MT/s. The unit still screams, but it’s a buzzkill to see the advertised speeds out of reach. @Bushidounohana 5 місяців тому

      @@EthanG45 my biggest caution on the Win Max 2-the advertised RAM spec is 7500 MT/s, but the ability to actually run the RAM at those speeds is a matter of silicon lottery per device, apparently. Mine (ordered from DroiX) can only reach 6400 MT/s, and DroiX support has acknowledged that the issue is widespread, so buyer beware on that front. The device is still snappy and excellent, just disappointing to not get what was advertised.

    I followed your guide to a “T” and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the thorough and easy to follow step-by-step walkthrough!
    The only part that I was initially unsure about was whether Bazzite installed itself on the new partition or the Windows side. During the install process it only showed one hard drive that appeared to match the available space for my Windows partition (I allotted slightly more for the Bazzite side than the Windows partition).
    Nonetheless, I’ve confirmed that Bazzite was installed on the correct partition by monitoring the available disk space on both OS’s. The Windows and Bazzite disk space are changing independent of each other depending on the games I install. The only weird thing is that the Windows Disk Manager still shows 100% availability for the Bazzite-side partition, even though Bazzite itself shows the correct disk space.
    I just wanted to put that out there in case anyone else is concerned about this issue.

Manual partitioning lets you create a separate EFI partition for Bazzite, that way Windows can't "accidentally" wipe your Linux boot entires after a Windows update, etc. Automatic, unfortunately, doesn't create a separate EFI partition

      @@tidyjii7348 Windows updates occasionally wipe the Linux boot entries in a shared EFI partition, leading to basically making your bazzite install unaccessible until you manually fix it. A separate EFI helps prevent that

    The Windows on handheld experience is still really lacking, so I'm glad to hear this works well. I think the Steam Deck track pads are pretty amazing and I don't think I could do without them, but setting up the Ally with Bazzite and dual booting to share files with Windows on the same device seems like a good match. Competition will only continue push innovation and not everyone has the same preferences when it comes to controls. Thanks, Russ!

    This tutorial was awesome and worked perfectly for me, thanks so much. I've been loving the steam os and basically don't even use windows anymore. I partioned using the exact same 4tb ssd and basically split 2tb to Linux and 2tb to windows although I'm now regretting not giving more space to Linux since I am running low on capacity. Is there a way to safely reallocate some of the windows space to the Linux partition without losing data and needing to set everything up again? I've seen some talk about a gparted approach but am not super confident.
    I've also heard of people splitting into 3 partitions, a steam os Bootable, windows Bootable and then another partition to store the steam installed games so that you could play from both bootables without needing an SD card. Would it be possible to switch to a setup like this? Wouldn't that be better since then the speed of the ssd could be used instead of the sd card for storage

    If you don’t want to go into the bios to switch, you can show the grub menu when booting just like it normally would if you dual booted linux and windows on a normal PC. This will allow you to pick which OS to boot into when restarting the ally. The docs detail how to do this but you can run ‘ujust configure-grub unhide’ in terminal or install a fancy boot loader like refind which will make it look a bit nicer on the smaller screen. Consult the docs.

      Same idea I had too. 😊 I am planning on getting the Ally X next year maybe near Spring Time (tax refund season) and a 4TB SSD to split the two OSes. I'm also thinking that would be a good time to send my original Ally in to Asus to fix my SD card reader if I don't do it sooner, as Bazzite would be nice to use with my original Ally to have games on SD cards. Would be especially cool to be able to use the same SD cards from my Steam Deck on the Ally to easily play the same games between all of my handhelds. I would try Bazzite sooner on my current Ally but can't bring myself to clear enough space on it to be worth it imo. I have a 2TB SSD in it but feels like I am always managing storage space as it is. I'm considering putting Bazzite as the only OS in my OEM 512GB SSD tho and either swapping it temporarily or running it via dock, as I really am anxious to try it out.

    I can see another option for those who want to tinker with Bazzite and don't want to partition a single drive is to use an external SSD (especially since both ports are USB4). Might be a little annoying having the external SSD sticking up or even dangling but I can see it being an easier option to boot into. SSD plugged in, boots into Bazzite. SSD not plugged in, boots into Windows.
    Then the option to partition can come later or even fully commit to Bazzite.

    So Linux uses a bootloader called GRUB. There is a way to enable it to show on startup instead of booting directly to Linux. You can configure it in such a way that the GRUB menu that appears would ask you first if you wanna boot into Linux or Windows. I used to do this for dual-booting, but that was before these immutable Linux distros became a thing so I have no idea what the process would be for Bazzite.

    A note, you can also resize the Windows 11 partition without using the Disk Management screen, it's built into the Advanced drive storage menus in Win11.
    You may need to take drive encryption off first in the windows screen to enable it. It's not as pretty, as you need to set the size by number i.e. 300GB would be 286102 in MiB, 750gb would be 715255 MiB. But it's easier to navigate without digging into the advanced menus.

    • @fightnight14

      What happens if you don't decrypt the drive before partitioning?

    • @Toliman.
      @Toliman. Місяць тому

      @@fightnight14 It just changes how you boot back into windows.
      If encryption is enabled, you might have issues getting back into windows the next time.
      You shouldn't, as secure boot won't be set. But it can be.
      If both the drive is encrypted, and secure boot is enabled, you'll need a recovery key to get in. If it's disabled, there's no issue, then you can re-encrypt and enable security afterwards.
      This is more of an issue on corp/managed PCs where you want to make data recovery difficult if people steal or access a laptop to get passwords and access logins, or just to prevent people booting up with USB drives to steal personal data and passwords, logins, cookies, session data, banking info, etc.
      TLDR is, secure boot/ EFI is faster, which is why it's preferred for Linux, and Windows.
      It also allows DRM and secure hardware to work, like fingerprint readers, HDR monitors (sic) and anything that uses DRM. It can be avoided, but for convenience and speed, it's better to use EFI/Secure Boot.
      It's also easier to boot into windows by holding volume up when it's rebooting and you see the slice/animation.
      The reason is, EFI or Secure Boot is tied to encryption / signing keys/TPM 2.0. If you can get into the BIOS, this doesn't matter, but, if someone puts a password to get in, you can't decrypt the data. You can only start over or wipe the system.
      If you don't disable encryption/secure boot, You'll get an error when going back to windows because the partition changed and it may ask for the Bitlocker recovery key (which you may not have - it was set during the clone recovery)
      A TPM/BIOS warning will probably pop up or ask you to save the boot order as it has changed. It's fixable because Asus has a cloud recovery system, but it wipes the drive if it was encrypted (sic).
      Universal Blue's installer lets you put a TPM Key in, so this lets you use UEFI/Secure Boot for both Linux and Windows (makes rebooting/switching OS faster)
