    This is the same thing that is happening with Spirit in the past few years
    the original animated Spirit was amazing to me as a kid cause it introduced cultures, freedom, life as a wild horse, intro to breaking horses, intro to what people do to horses to tame them etc
    but nowadays, remakes of spirit has consisted of a girl that doesn't know anything about riding, going to a farm, finding a wild spirit out in the wild and taming spirit enough to ride him. It's so silly it's annoying. I just want to watch the original spirit again, Why can't they just get out of these cliches and remake the original but better like what they did with the lion king. They could at least give us a continuation of spirit or something along those lines,

      I completely agree! It's so damned sad that all horse movies nowadays tend to boil down to a cliche. There are so many interesting stories to tell, and they just keep rehashing the same stuff over and over again. Spirit is one of my favourite horse-films, it's just such an amazing story, with great music, great animation and great characters. Why go and screw it up with a girl no one cares about?

    "Kid/teen that most likely never rode a horse goes into a farm/gets lost and meets abused and "wild" horse and instantly forms a super strong bond. This bond magically makes horse able to be ridden and kid/teen magically knows how to ride a horse bareback without falling off within seconds. Such film most likely will include a competition/show that saves whole farm/family/stable and said horse from being sold and there is great chance for some hot equestrian that will become corny love interest for the character"
    I saw at least 10 movies/shows like this. Is it only way writers know how to make horse movies?
    Im so tired of "chosen one" mentality in horse movies. I am a riding instructor, and amount of foolish little girls thinking they are so special to "tame" a horse is ridiculous. I almost had accident in stable where a kid got into never ridden young stallion's stable (that was in separate building from riding horses) and began to tack him up beliving that he will get tamed. Luckily he just kept running away from her, but it could end so poorly

    I love the original movie with all my heart. I do think it is hands down the best horse movie out there as well. I didn't see the trailer for this movie at all and watched it by myself without any expectations- I can't even express how sad I was when I realized that this movie was just a shitty remake.
    The thing that made the original movie so good was how realistic it actually was. The story of ginger is a key part because horses are pack animals, they will never love a human as much as they will love their own herd. And it doesn't matter if they're wild horses or domestic pets. I fucking hate the fact that the new movie first starts with black beauty being more of a horse, caring for her herd more than anything else. But when they capture her suddenly she can tell that the main girl lost her family too and feels empathy towards her. That is just absolute horseshit.
    With this new cliché approach to the original movie they couldn't fucking help themselves and had to add Ginger and Marylegs into this, but this time they don't matter. Nothing matters because this black joke of a horse doesn't need other horses anymore.
    The only good part about the new movie is when they show Black Beauty's life on the fancy barn where she's mistreated by the bratty girl. I'm not gonna lie the bratty girl is the only believable character in this film, just because people like her do exist in the equestrian community. They are actually a very common sight, and I wished this film would have tried to bring out the wrong in the modern horse sports even if it's a bit controversial and would make a lot of people angry- Just like the old movie was a mirror as to how carriage horses were being treated, this movie should have been about how modern horses are being mistreated. Literally every horse discipline has their own problems which lead to the horses paying the price each and every time without a fail, yet our ego's are too fragile to admit it. This movie totally missed their opportunity here.

    "black beauty", this is ginger's story. It fits her character so so so much better! Also, They put black beauty as a wild horse WHEN HE ISN'T WILD. In the original film he is born on a farm, his mothers name is duchess and she is the owner's favourite. So even black beauty's mother wasn't wild. • @brassbuckles
      @brassbuckles 5 місяців тому

      I'm not even sure Black Beauty was meant to be a stallion. Although we know him to be male, context clues suggest he's more likely meant to be a gelding. I wondered when I was old enough to know the difference if he was supposed to be a gelding instead because Anna Sewell never actually specified. During that time period, it would've been inappropriate to talk about him getting cut or being intact, so we can only rely on the evidence shown in how he's treated and behaves in the novel.
      I know at least one of the movies had him display a strong romantic interest in Ginger, but as far as I can remember, in Anna Sewell's book, he doesn't really show the interest in Ginger or the few other mares beyond regarding them as friends and fellow horses. I readily admit I might be wrong because I last read the book when I was a child, and there may have been some subtle hints in keeping with Victorian literature that I missed. If he were a stallion, then either he would not have been turned out to pasture with the mares like he was, or it would have been done for breeding purposes. The books never mention any of these mares having foals. I've seen this discussed elsewhere and at least one other person made the same observation. Black Beauty is also used as a lady's horse early on, so we can also infer from that he's most likely gelded. I know that he's portrayed as an exceptionally gentle and willing animal, but stallions weren't considered appropriate mounts for women at the time. Women weren't viewed as being able to control them, and there was probably a sense of impropriety about it as well. I'm sure some stallions were ridden by women and even highborn ladies at the time anyway, but it wouldn't have been common practice.
      Basically, aside from the possibility of a female Black Beauty becoming pregnant, changing out his gender to female would work within the framing of the original story. There's nothing in the original source that would require him to be male to make sense.
      On the other hand, what doesn't really work is changing the entire plot so that it has none of the message of the original story, which is not about a plucky teen taming a wild horse. Rather, it was about the horrors of animal abuse and how much better life was for animals when they are treated with empathy.

    I still have the old movie of the original Black Beauty and copy of the original book... Disney did more than disappoint me on this one. The original movie that was made on it was amazing to me when I watched it as a kid (even if I didn't understand much of what was happening) and even as a kid the movie made it so clear to me what was going on with the horses and how upset some of them were in their situations (the races, the work horses, being forced into carriage riding). The death of Ginger(or at least I think she died?) made me cry as a kid and Disney's remake made me cry alright...cry of boredom and Horse Meets Girl cliches. The racing scene is what I remember the most from when I was little and I plan on getting the movie onto a DVD so I can watch it again. (The VHS I have of it is too damaged :/)

It wasn't just meant to show life of a horse, but to contrast the good and well-meaning owners with those who didn't care about the animals as anything more than a transportation device.

    For some reason, gender-flipping Black Beauty makes me think the people at Disney are trying to get brownie points with the extreme-feminists out there. Now there's nothing wrong with strong female characters, but rewriting a classic story just for that purpose is definitely not the way to go. They shouldn't have even called this "Black Beauty" if that were the case. I saw the 1994 version, and read the book, and this looks nothing like the story. I realize Disney has a habit of taking classic stories and rewriting them, but never once have they actually gender-flipped the main character. I'm also tired of the "girl-with-a-chip-on-her-shoulder meets wild animal and they form a bond" bladie bladie bladie blah. I have been very disenchanted with Disney as of late, and this does not do anything to help it.

    • @pumkinpatchwork
      @pumkinpatchwork 2 роки тому +2

      I doubt it’s about the whole feminism thing but rather because Black Beauty is a “girly” name so kids probably went into the film expecting it to be a mare, not a stallion. hell I thought Black Beauty was a mare when I was reading the book and was slightly disappointed to realize he wasn’t (I was like nine, okay) so I’m not surprised- albeit very miffed- that Disney would do such a thing

    • @brassbuckles
      @brassbuckles 5 місяців тому

      Black Beauty's gender doesn't actually matter in context of the original book, but making the story into "wild horse and girl meet" changes the plot and the purpose of the original book completely.
      Hear me out. While the book has Black Beauty be male, many context clues indicate he's probably a gelding rather than a stallion. Even if he is a stallion instead, there's nothing in the book that relies upon his being one; namely, he never misbehaves around mares and is not noted to ever sire any offspring. Yet he's frequently worked, pastured, and stabled alongside mares, so you'd expect him to act out or for the mares to drop foals. He's also initially ridden by a lady, and stallions were considered inappropriate mounts for women at the time.
      As @pumpkinpatchwork notes, the gender swap could just be because Black Beauty sounds, to a modern audience, like a better name for a mare than a gelding. Even if that's not the case, I don't think gender-swapping a horse that never sires offspring or acts out around mares really makes much difference, regardless of their reasoning. I mean, it could be as simple as being unable to source multiple black stallions or geldings that could do the training needed to perform in this particular film as well as a set of mares. Films starring animals only rarely use only one animal actor. There are always backups, and they all need to look the same or be able to be made to look the same. Usually, the film crew will source the animals all from the same trainer/stable/etc. So if they picked a particular stable to work with, that stable may have had enough black mares with the skillsets needed, but only one gelding.
      Feminism and female empowerment aren't the problem here (and rarely are, except for the false feminists who are anti-men rather than pro-equality), but a complete lack of understanding of the source material and its themes is. Again, the gender of the horse doesn't even matter to the story.
      What I don't like about it is that they took a story about how animal abuse is terrible and animals needed to be treated better and turned it into girl-meets-wild-horse. Even within the framework of a modern setting, there are plenty of stories that can be told about animal abuse and how people can do better. Black Beauty could indeed be a jumper, or even a dressage horse, barrel racer, etc. in the modern world, rather than a carriage horse and hunter, without changing the underlying theme of the story. Considering he was deemed ruined for use by high-class society when his knees were scarred, the show ring would also be an appropriate career for a modern Black Beauty. To tell the same story today, it would mean he'd have to be sold, likely at slaughter auctions, bought cheap multiple times, and mistreated by some owners while treated ethically/rescued by others. He couldn't just be owned by one person because the tragedy of losing his original good home is a major part of the story and its theme. We can't, as an audience, appreciate how good he has it in the beginning without seeing how bad things can be later on.

    I have watched both versions. And the 2020 one is just- a No. It is an OK film, story is unoriginal, seen it a million times before, but the actors were alright. But like you said, the first one had actual meaning and it had a good and interesting story. Black beauty, like many of their remakes they've done, is a classic film, and I am sad to see that this is what the generation of tomorrow will be growing up with and not the CLASSIC black beauty, same with Spirit, the series is OK I guess but it just ruined the whole feeling for me, and the film itself. Both Black Beauty and the Spirit riding free series, they're not absolutely terrible but again, It just ruins the original, you can't watch it without thinking about what it is today. They need to learn that the originals are already amazing and the classics everyone knows and loves and not to keep shoving shit remakes down people's throats. I know that they are a huge company and to stay at the top, they need to keep producing things, but it should be things that people haven't seen before or a good story (not a remake of an already amazing film.)

    The book and ‘90s movie are two of the things that I will defend to my dying breath. I watched this out of curiosity (and because I’m a masochist apparently) and this wasn’t even Ginger’s story. This is Flicka from Flicka’s POV - to the point they even turned him from a stallion (presumably? It never SAYS he was gelded, but he never shows any interest in a mare) into a filly/mare

    • @brassbuckles
      @brassbuckles 5 місяців тому

      He was probably a gelding. Remember the book was written and published in the 1800s, when it would have been inappropriate to talk about whether Black Beauty was cut or intact. He was used as a lady's horse, turned out with mares in pasture, worked alongside a mare without any misbehavior, and none of the mares he was close to ever dropped a foal. So even if he was a stallion, contextually he was treated as a gelding. I'm not really bothered by the movie turning him into a mare, so much as it's irritating to see the entire plot and anti-abuse theme scrapped.

    I am so annoyed by nowadays horse movies.
    Problematic teenager with parent-issues (extra points if the mother died and the father is not capable of handling his daughter) meets the prettiest horse in town, that never allows anyone to ride them. Problematic teenager creates a very special bond that only they can create and grow together and become the best team eveeeer.
    This is every horse movie. Literally every modern horse movie goes down this road, because they **think** they are pleasing girls who love horses and wanna create that fantasy picture of "you and your dream horse"
    What I love about the original Black Beauty was the raw presentation of the horse world. How they got handled, the good and the bad. How bonds are made in a realistic way, but also broken. You see this big fancy and clean stable with so much space, but also see how mistreated the horses were and then you see a poor family with little to no space and a very rough life, but they give all the love they can to the horse. It is a very bittersweet movie that tought me a lot back then.
    Just bring back the raw and real of the horse world. Dont create this stupid illusion, show how it is. Stop pretending the horse world is all but rainbows and butterflies, cause it isn't, and even though it isn't, it is a very beautiful world that is worth showing.

    Im so late to this oml. I absolutely adored Black Beauty and it was the film that got me so interested in horses. This 'remake' of Black Beauty broke my heart because it just ruined the story. It was simply a remake of the film Flicka. Black Beauty was never a 'wild' 'dangerous' filly. He was a kind forgiving stallion who tried to see the good in humans and people took his kind heart and broke it down. What makes me even more mad about this film is they took away his name, as silly as this sounds, the name Black Beauty made you see how beautiful this young stallion was, with a beautiful shining black coat and just called her beauty. I dont know it rubs me the wrong way lol. And the other character was ginger, her fiery spirit had a story behind (if you read the books) she knew the way of mankind in a way that Black Beauty had not been exposed to, she was a sweet mare to those who were sweet to her and gave the same treatment back to those who werent. But later on in the film (around the carriage scene) you can see that she had lost hope, I feel like Black Beauty had given her that hope as he was always so kind to man. I pity her as she landed into the wrong hands resulting in her death. I agree that it would have been nice if she had survived and we got to see her story after they had separated but I also feel as though seeing her die gave Black Beauty that view of man not being so great, it also shows that some horses dont get to escape from the cruelty and have to see the bitter end. All in all, hate the new black beauty.

    Same thing happened with spirit: stallion of cimmarron, original story was about wild horses but it was mentioning native americans problems, how they are treated by army while also containing beatiful bond between human and a horse. And then new version is basically every horse movie with this girl having magic bond with untamable horse earned from nowhere and with idians theme totally whiped out lol

    It sounds cool... But like the first Black Beauty is better. I would like to watch it. When is it coming out? If they just renamed the characters the film would have been amazing. I know so many great things could have happened with the new movie of Black Beauty. Anna (the author of Black Beauty) wrote the story for a reason, not just to have it be copied into a new story nothing like the first.

      So much yes! The old black beauty understood what the story was about, this one is trying to appeal to a younger audience, and failing. Badly. I did check it out and I am thinking of doing a video about it. If you haven't seen you should watch it, it does have some nice horses in, and parts of the story is quite sweet.

    This is exactly why I don’t like horse movies. They’re always way too predictable like when you start a wild role play on SSO and someone has to start it off with the classic grazing. 🤣

    This is the same thing that happened to Spirit. It was an amazing movie that I loved, but Spirit Riding Free ruined it for me. It's corny, but they ruined Spirit. He would never let a young, inexperienced girl ride him, and no beginner can get their seat, let alone ride without tack
    Disney totally ruined Black Beauty. A movie on Ginger or Merrylegs would've been cool, but so many things are wrong with this movie. Beauty isn't a mustang, she is actually a he, carthorses aren't used for transportation anymore, and it's more of a cringy horse-girl movie than anything else. I really could go on and on, but I don't want to

    I literally got sooo mad when I saw the trailer 😠😂 BlackBeauty is one of my favorite books and the first time a book made me cry. This movie had so much potential since it’s made by Disney but no they just slapped on trouble girl with wild horse very original 😒 clearly this is another quick cash grab just like the lady and the tramp remake disappointing since lady and the tramp is my favorite movie. Ugh I was like I can’t wait to see Ginger and Merrylegs 😑

    I didn't watch the 2020 Black Beauty, but this plotline sounds more like The Black Stallion except with a girl and a mare instead of a boy and a stallion, and jumping instead of racing. Maybe Disney got the Black Stallion series confused somehow with Black Beauty.
    The problem of this is that it misses the entire point of Black Beauty. Anna Sewell was trying to speak out against animal abuse that she saw everywhere during her time, as well as inhumane practices against other human beings. So she wrote a book full of people engaging in abusive practices and showed the difference between those and the people who treated their animals well. It's unsurprising because at that time, everyone had to rely on horses, though of course not everyone owned one, just like not everyone necessarily owns a car today. If you lived in the city and didn't own a horse, you had to pay for a taxi driver, just like today you'd have to hire a taxi or Uber if you had no car of your own.
    I seem to remember that there were several movies based on the original book made in the 80s as well as the 90s, and all were varying degrees of quality. There were also quite a few based on The Black Stallion, which is a series I haven't seen brought to the movies in a very long time. That's probably for the best, considering the writer mistook Arabians for thoroughbreds, among the many other unrealistic aspects of the story, though I tended to envision it more as a "thoroughbred breed horse from the Middle East" when I read that series.

    The 2020 Black Beauty movie was _every single_ cliché horse girl story that's been made in the last 25 some-odd years. The only thing the 2020 film has in common with the book is the title.

      If they did like the original and adapted it to show abuse in modern horse sports it could have been interesting, but it would have been too controversial among equestrians so they chose to do another cliché movie with a city girl who never rode horses but somehow can tame and create a special bond with a black wild horse.

    I think anyone in "proper" equestrian circles, looking for steeplechase/Olympic blood, would laugh a mustang right out of the ring.
    I love mustangs, I want a gaited one, but once you start hitting a certain level of competition it's warmbloods with pedigrees. If it were that easy to compete on a horse, everyone would do it.

    Look cattle you really need to know, understand and realize that Disney's black beauty is a direct remake and re-adaptation of both Anna Sewell's book and the 1994 Warner Bros and Disney didn't make this new version they distributed it Jeremy Bolt (Also from the U.K and producer of the film and Ashley Avis (Also a fan of Anna Sewell's who also directed the film) and also in 1966 The Walt Disney Company had acquired the rights to the book first and they first adapted it as an LP record on the Disneyland before Warner Bros did in time (Despite they unexpectedly made their own movie based on the horse) and Disney's black beauty film based on the novel isn't a cliche the crappy 2015 adaption based on Black Beauty produced by Epic Pictures is a cliche and that version on the book entirely lacked it's source material itself and was directed by Daniel Zirilli and starred Luke Perry, Jennifer Mckenzie and Bruce Davison.

      No, it's not :) If you've read the book you would know this. The focus with the new BB is absolutely the girl, and not the horse, which takes away a lot of the impact of the original story, which was a message to people of the 1800's: Please stop abusing horses. This new story doesn't really have that message, it is more the focus of a bond between horse and rider, which is fine! But don't use the name of BB to prickle nostalgia to get people in the theatres (watch at home during Pandemic). Also, the story would have been better served if they'd told the story of Ginger and not BB, Ginger dies in the original, how cool would it have been to have seen her story told. How a girl, who loves her horse, ends up saving her? You didn't need to use BB, you could have just used Ginger and the story would have made far more sense.
