Spacedock looks at the Firefly Class Transport "Serenity" (Firefly/Serenity)

"Just get us on the ground!"
"That parts gonna happen fairly definitely."
"This landing could get pretty interesting."
"Define 'interesting'. "
"Oh go oh god, we're all gonna die?"
One of the best spacecraft in fiction, from the simple fact that it was so capable despite being so unassuming. The design was an excellent blend of the sensible in function with a hint of fantastical in its aesthetics. So good.
And being landed it's like a big dragoness sitting on the platform...
If I ever won the lottery.. I would build a life size replica of this beautiful ship, and call it home!
I did the math and the Serenity can go approximately 360,000,000 kilometres per hour, or 223,693,629 miles per hour for any Americans. This makes the speed a clean 100,000,000 meters per second, just above 33% the speed of light, that being 299,792,458 meters per second.
Edit: As a bonus, I also done up how long it would take to get to the nearest star, Alpha Centauri. Going at top speed, it would take approximately 12 years, or a few months under 13 years as viewed from earth due to time dilation. This means that, due to the ships capacity for supplies, it would likely run out of either water, power and air before it ever reached its destination. It would, however, likely have enough storage space for sufficient foodstuff for at least 1-2 people, that being a rough estimate based solely on the cargo bay. Likely a third or even forth person could come if the excess empty space were used as storage.
Great video thank you. Best scene for me is when Mal finds, buys off the lot Serenity. First time.
We're one year away from the 20 year anniversary of Firefly.
This video is good but it could benefit from being refreshed.
I did/still do really enjoy the Firefly series. I must confess that the Serenity was the first sci fi ship that I just had to know what the interior blue prints and layout looked like. It started me down the road to finding online series such as yours to learn of interior designs of numerous ship variations on the TV and movie ships of the genre to this day. Thanks for this episode.
Really needs to be a spiritual successor to Firefly. The universe is pretty much dead at this point but any show that can catch the same spirit as the original is good in my book.
Blake's Seven was the original Firefly and I think there should be not a reboot, but a continuation of Series 5, with Avon, Vila and Dayna surviving, meeting up with Jenna and Orac, who've been rebuilding a DSV class vessel, of course named the Liberator II
+ X51Games That was a good show in its day, cheesy FX were more than compensated by great writing and acing. Paul Darrow (Avon) was a standout.
I'd love it if the Last Airbender creators made an animated spin-off
Its axing was a travesty! (Like the 1 season run of CAPRICA!)
The original cast are in their 70's now! TOO old to be fighting the oppressive Terran Federation!
Keep your Enterprise and your Millennium Falcon, keep your Normandy and your Pillar of Autumn. My heart will always belong to Serenity.
"... even to this day."
Yep, June of 2020 ... and counting.
2024, continuing...
"I aim to misbehave".
-Captain Malcom Reynolds
Reynolds: "Do you want to command this ship?"
Jayne: "Yes!"
Reynolds: "Well ... you can't."
Philip Clayberg Darn.
*Kicks him into the engine*
@@PFiction24 (Kayleigh grabs him and pulls him away from the engine)
"Cap'n: You know you don't belong in there. That's my girl and I don't put anything but mechanical items in her."
"It wasn't intentional."
"I bet. Next thing you know, you'll be trying to do Wash's job."
"Not yet. Not until after the last scene of the movie."
"They let you see the script already?"
"Of course. I'm the captain."
"Of all the gorram ... I'm going to file a complaint with Joss."
"You can do that? But ... but he isn't a member of the ship's crew."
"Doesn't matter. Joss! Someone find me Joss!"
(Keyleigh stomps out of the engine room)
"Uh oh. Kayleigh's on the warpath."
(Zoe stands in the doorway to the engine room)
"Got problems with women again, Capn? Wasn't Saffron enough? Or Inara?"
"I got thrown into the engine."
"And she threw a fit."
"That's putting it mildly."
"Maybe you can speak to one of the script-writers. Get them to help you out."
"Might have to, might have to."
Philip Clayberg Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
@@PFiction24 LOL! I'm not sure what else to add (it's after 11:30 pm my time and I'm trying to decide whether to head for bed or stay up a little longer). Maybe you can add some in the meantime and (after I wake up tomorrow) I could see what I can add to what you wrote? Here's a little more from me:
(River looks around Zoe): "Not sure how much the script-writers could help, Capn. They told me that we're getting cancelled before the end of the season. But don't worry -- we'll be guesting on panels at conventions in North America, Europe, and Australia for at least the next twenty years."
(Zoe shrugs) "Not much of a career, but I guess it's better than a life of crime. At least we're less likely to get shot at by Patience."
I really wasn't expecting to find this here, but I'm glad I did. It brings back all the good feels from Firefly.
I've heard that Whedon's inspiration for Serenity and the show Fire Fly was the Millennium Falcon and the American Civil War.
As the behind the scenes footage shows, Whedon said, "Millennium Falcon, good. Stagecoach, better." He didn't mention anything about the Civil War being an inspiration.
@@philipclayberg4928 Oh really? I guess maybe I've read something you haven't.
Way to creep on 4 year old comments, ya creeper.
@@johnwizeman3894 Oops. I got caught necro'ing again. Sorry. (Reminds self to look at when the last comment's date was before replying to it.)
@@philipclayberg4928 Hey! Don't forget to look at the comment dates posted b4 you make a comment.. you necro dude! Have a nice day!
That's impossible. Civil War didn't come out until 2016, idiot.
my favorite show.. i just want 3 minutes alone with the people who canceled it
Only three if I could get along with the people that canceled it I would want to take my time if I was given a time limit I'd only need one
Give my brother 1 minute he would do more damage then you in 3
Let's just throw those that cancelled it to the reavers?
I'll join you. Thoughs 🤬 💩s can ☠
Who would enjoy a sequel series staring River, say maybe 10 or 15 years after the events of Serenity?
Well done! A fine tribute to Serenity and her fans.
"I'm a leaf on the wind" Wash!
That's "Wash", not "Walsh"!
@@richardmilward7478 OOPS, typo. Thanks for the correction.
An absolute classic ship!
A tidbit I caught here that I didn't previously know was the scale of the Firefly universe. The unusual 5 star solar system is 55 light hours across, or between 5 and 6 times the size of Earth's solar system (if Pluto's orbit is the boundary). To be able to cross it in a week requires Serenity to have an average speed during the trip of almost 1/3 the speed of light, with actual peak speed being far more than that if you incorporate acceleration into the calculation.
Another thought I had was that obviously artificial gravity is a thing (down isn't based on the direction of travel in space), doesn't require power (in "Out of Gas" life support fails long before gravity does), and cancels out most external acceleration but not all. Since most inconsistencies happen near a planet perhaps the system has trouble in significant gravity wells.
I've always thought that Serenity set being real, like being able to walk around and see the ship made the series that much better.
There reeeeeeally needs to be an updated version of this episode. I feel like I'm watching space dock classic

Best. Line. Ever.
Loving watching this channel grow! Every video is great, and brings more and more people. I hope this series continues and grows for a long time!
+Gexman0 Thanks for watching Gexman0, I hope so too :)
Thanks for doing this one it was great, look forward to more
Heart of Gold!!!!
i do miss that ship and that show great vid
Thank you for doing this one.
Best ship in the goram verse
I'd like to see the SDF-1 and other Macross/Robotech ships. There's a lot of good stuff to mine there.
Good luck getting that past Harmony Gold. They are far more savage about protecting their IP than any other entity.
@@ericg7183 ironically they're not even the creator of the Series so technically they're have no right to do so.... They're the real reason Japanese not wanting to give their products anymore to Gaijin like Harmony of Greed
My favorite ship.
Lovely presentation, thx.
thank you!
very well done
Great summary, thanks. Shiny!
simply awesome !!
This channel is awesome so glad I came across it!
_Take my love..._
Take my land...
Quality sure did improve since then (not necessarily that bad back then, but has become so much better since then)
Shiniest ship in the verse.
Keep flying.
Anyone else’s heart break at 0:50 when he said “series 3 Firefly...?”
That’s one capable boat!
I'm a fan of All Seven!
How about the Eagle transport from "Space 1999".
Can you do a video on Andromeda? It was a scifi tv series many years ago.
If I had to choose between a design like the Millenium Falcon and the Serenity, I'd take the Serenity in a heartbeat.
Love it
And she's shiny!
I'm a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar!
Fantastic show, fantastic ship an utter crime that it got cancelled
I would love to see something about any of the various star-ships, or personel carriers, used by the UNSC in Halo! (Pillar of Autumn, Pelican, Long Sword etc. ) Mostly because the star-ships, according to what I've read in the cannon books, are built around an impressive weapons system!
I know there's plenty of lore around Halo, and also plenty of material on the ships themselves. I just think you do a great job covering the ships themselves, its like reading those Eye Witness exploded-diagram books as a child!
Keep up the good work!
hey what about "space above and beyond" you have something from there?
+BarbikaPahor - that was a great show - too bad those in charge of networks didn't understand how good that show was, and messed around with times/dates for the viewing, making It hard to follow. Not to mention airing some of the episodes out of sequence.
Yup! LUCKY to survive 2 seasons sadly! Deserved FAR better!
Just found out about your channel... it is incredible! If I may... I don't see anywhere a video about the Andromeda Ascendant (and the Maru!)... A badass ship you can talk to.
I would very much like to see a video about the Tokohu Class Cruiser from Firefly. I've always wanted to learn more about them and you certainly do your homework!
I wish to have one of these,or Constellation Aquilla.
best damn ship in the 'verse!
There's an old English show called Blake's 7,can you do their ship?
A ship is more than just that for it is a home as well as an old friend.
What about the "Cerberus" (Firefly-Class) gunship also flown by browncoats? Also Victory-Class destroyer, ISA, Babylon 5.
Yes. I would love to see American Airlines Valley Forge Spacefreighter, of the Berkshire Class (Silent Running)
I like that you used music from treasure planet battle at procyon.Still one of my favorite games and still play it on LAN party programs :)
Thanks for the video. The ships from Farscape would be good to see.
just keep your eye on the primry buffer panels
I watch this as I fiddle with my Serenity keychain.
Had to fiddle with something.......
@@goldenscales *giggle* No comment.
Dark Matter ship Raza.
I love it! Can you do one on the Type S Scout or Beowulf Free Trader from the Traveller role-playing game?
Love your videos which I only recently discovered. You asked for recommendations about ships to feature. I would very much like to see a video of the UD4L Cheyenne dropship from the Aliens franchise.
I'd like to see one of the "wedge" ships from the Elite universe (Cobra, Sidewinder, etc) just because I think the shape is fairly iconic
Have you featured the B-wing assault Starfighter from Star Wars yet?
Cool channel, thanks for the videos. Please do Star Citizen RSI Polaris Corvette and Lando Calrissian's Lady Luck.
I like the battle of proceyon theme song during the video also any chance of an episode on the galor class battleships/destroyers?
Hey man, love the page. Ive watched everything and was wondering if you would do more Babylon 5. Membari, Narn, Centauri, Vorlon Superweapon. Also maybe Alien/Predator universe; Sulako, Nostromo, Hunter ships.... Im really enjoying your content and I love the guys at Trek Yards too....
there is also USM Auriga and many others.
I'd like to see one of Galactica, Moya, Enerprise E, and last but not least.....SPACEBALL ONE. lol Thanks and keep up the good work
Any & All 'Craft', both Organic & Nonorganic, from ALL of "StarCraft".
Several Firefly mark1,2,qnd 3's were considered the best gunship models.
Any chance you're planning on doing a video of the Lexx or Outlaw Star?
Oh yea! I forgot about Outlaw Star 🌟
Stargate ships. From the Aurora Class ships to the Pyramid Hatack class and everything in between.
the "bad guys" alliance ships.
Yes please!

where could one find a model to assemble of the serenity?
This would be showing my age, but as a youngster I would run home after school to watch Fireball XL5. That was a ship I would dream about, that is until Lost In Space (1967 version ). XL5 though, design and interior wise is pretty much a mystery. Could you shed some light on the lay-out?
These are pretty cool. Are you planning on just doing spacecraft from visual media? If not, I'd love to see a rundown of the GSV from Iain M. Banks' Culture series.
+Roger Ledgister Pretty much anything that there are enough images of is a valid request for this series. Other more obscure things I couldn't do for this series may show up in spin-offs in the future, like podcasts or debates. But thats contingent on how successful the Patreon for this project is when it goes up next month. Thanks for watching :)
+Roger Ledgister I would love to see this, but dear god would it be hard to do. Very few pictures to have on screen, which is a shame.
Oh PLEASE do a summary of ships from the culture, if you haven't already, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
@@Spacedock Have you done Moya and/or Talen from FarScape?
how about looking at the ships in space above & beyond??
Where did you find the size for the verse itself? I can't find anything that says it's 55 light hours across.
Do I hear treasure planet battle at procyon music in the background?
how about the Bebop from Cowboy Bebop? or the Milano from Guardians of the Galaxy? (If either of these have already been done, I apologize)
Heart of Gold?
Hey here’s another one For you . How about Blake 7 Great British show back in the day. And there was one more on the topic of British Syfy. I for the life of me can’t think of the name but that ship on the show looks like a giant Dragon fly with no wings.
It is SUCH a pity it was axed after 14 eps! Typical, any show that's TOO good doesn't last, esp any GOOD sci fi show! The Firefly WAS the space western Gene Roddenberry DREAMED Star Trek COULD have been!
DMSProduktions I agree but I’m actually confused. Are you saying they made 17 episodes? I thought there was only 11 or so. Omg that means I have not seen them all then.
@@kubel83 Canned after 17, but I think only 11 were ever aired on its 1st run. They also made a sequel film to finish it off, called Serenity!
DMSProduktions thanks for the info buddy. Really appreciate it. Yeah I have only seen 11 or so episodes and then I went and watched Serenity at the cinema when it came. So when you said 17 episodes, I started jumping like a little kid. I must watch them. If I can find them... In my opinion Firefly was one of the best Sci-fi series I have ever seen. Absolutely loved the Space/cowboy Theme they went with. The story. Characters and music. Such a great show in my opinion.
@@kubel83 Yes, a real effects and story telling potential WASTED!
I had the whole series on my other HD, but it crashed!
Bruh you don’t have to put down Star Trek to acknowledge how awesome firefly is
Please do the Star Trek Jem Hadar battle cruiser :-D
It’s wild how good shows like firefly and cowboy bebop are, yet they were ended so quickly anyway..
Reminds me of Starbug
Don't forget the ship did for a time have a large caliber weapon on top of the ship to take down a reaver ship
Serenity vs The Unreliable (from outer worlds)
Space Battleship Yamato?
I would like for him to do the ships from gene Roddenberry andromeda
Please do an space 1999 eagle
How about the "Hooded Swan" from the Brian Stableford series of novels.
any vids on orville
I wonder could we build something like this in reality today?
Any chance to be produced using today technology of a 3D metal printing?
I would like to hear one of your briefs on a sins of a solar empire ship kol class battleship
1:40 Just like a big dragoness sitting on a sandy terrain...
and yes, this is the Velkhana from MHW:I
Do you plan on doing Warhammer 40k? Stuff like Eldar Craftworlds or Imperial Cruisers are amazing
