Ah, Firefly, a wonderful shiny gem taken from us far to young. Just a leaf in the wind.
Agreed
TOO GORRAM SOON!!!
So, so true
Hit to close to home for the ruling class.
Too soon 😢
"This is your captain speaking, we might experience some slight turbulance and then explode"
I love how noone takes it to terribly serious to..
Thats the beauty of Joss Whedon's writing style.
"We're gonna explode? I don't wanna explode"
Are those grenades Weldonwin? Get rid of them, we ain't starting a war...
well to be honest the bloody thing was ALWAYS experiencing turbulence and threating to explode, LOL!.
i don't want to explode...i've got things to do today and exploding is very low on my priority list
48 RCS thrusters is completely believable in a harder sci-fi context.
You're maneuvering a very large vessel with a complicated range of center-of-gravity positions. Real-life RCS is mounted in blocks and sometimes with multiple thrusters aligned in a single direction. Look at the Space Shuttle (44 thrusters in total), or Apollo (12 thrusters on the CM, 16 on the SM, 16 on the LEM) spacecraft, both of which are much older but much smaller than the 60-meter Firefly.
So....yeah....there's an actual reason for that number being as high as it is.
anulovlos Very much in agreement. It might also be useful to mention that RCS stands for Reaction Control System, which are the thrusters used not to power a vessel but rather to adjust its attitude, orientation, and other fine control movements while the main engine(s) provide most all of the thrust needed for general propulsion. So an RCS thruster will be used to turn the vehicle left or right, up or down, to rotate the vehicle about an axis, or to make fine docking and braking maneuvers. Depending upon the amount of control you need, the power (and finesse) that each thruster provides and how quickly you wish/need to make those changes in orientation it can take quite a few as they are often fitted in multiples at each RCS pod, with with thrusters pointing in both directions along each access (typically in sets of four thrusters to a pod each acting on two of the three possible axes) -- so 48 RCS thrusters divided by 4 suggests there were likely 12 RCS pod locations located across the ship -- likely four sets up front, four in the rear, and four more towards midship...it also provides some actual redundancy in the event some are lost or nonfunctional since each direction on the three possible axes (and six possible vector directions) will be served by 8 total thrusters, though some fine control and performance would be reduced with each thruster lost.
Hehehe.
If you assume RCS thrusters always have the same size, then yes, you need more for a bigger ship, however, 48 is a large number and introduces too many individual RCS units to maintain effectively, ergo it would be logical to use fewer but larger RCS thrusters, as those would be easier to maintain while not having any significant effect on flight performance.
+builder396
Problem: while it would be easier to maintain, having a smaller number of larger thrusters would also reduce precision, which in turn would make the RCS system almost useless for docking.
All that being said, the Firefly class likely still has larger RCS thrusters than, say, the Space Shuttle, for a ship the size of a Boeing 747 to still be able to mount fewer RCS thrusters in comparison to the Space Shuttle (32 on the Firefly S3 vs 44 on the STS Space Shuttle). It's likely that the RCS thrusters on the Firefly class are as big as possible without sacrificing fine control.
builder396 you do realize that the Apollo vessel (I dunno how to call it) had 44 RCS Thrusters? The number of 48 is ridiculously low in my opinion, look at KSP for example: bigger ships use bigger RCS Thrusters, however they also use substantially more of them...
You can't take the sky from me!
But they can cancel the show, bastards.
Awh, I just love this ship. As much as I drool over the Wells and the E-Wing, nothing tops Serenity. She is just gorgeous, and as strong a character in the show as any of the cast. To try and quote Kaylee, "You're interested in the ships, and well, mine's the prettiest."
It's been too long since I've watched either the show or the movie. Twenty seconds in and I'm already emotional.
I got nostalgic for it while doing the research
The leaf on the wind line got me. It got me cap.
I find myself listening to the ballad of Serenity from time to time.
same here
You can't take the sky from me
Ah Firefly. You were a gem of your time. Your opening by Sonny Rodes is just pure musical gold.
Firefly was a really underrated show. They did go full circle with the movie "Serenity." I wish they made sequels to that though.
there's an excellent (and by that i mean very shiny) fan fiction crossover that uses both firefly and star trek next gen in a good narrative called lost in the woods...in might be old (written in 2008) but it's still well worth checking out: www.fanfiction.net/s/4603570/1/Lost-In-The-Woods
Honestly, the Serenity has been a guide for how I want the protagonist ships in my stories to feel. It has a great homy feel to it and a bit of a character. A great ship! And perfect for such a short, but sweet show!
The ship did feel like a character of the show itself
In the role playing game it is treated as a character.
Its just Serenity...
Yeah, not "the Serenity"
Ship like that will be with you till the day you die.
" 'Cause it's a death trap." - Zoe
Serenity is that old truck that keeps running even though it's half rusted and everything has been replaced at least once.
and the creative use of duct tape here and there
It's as if you found the best editor in the 'verse to help.
Yep! Never any issues, nothing I ever have to fix on my end.. BEST EVER.
That's good, the last thing you want is an editor who overlooks an error and then goes to bed.
Jos was smart to leave the technology debates....star trek fans go over the official and unofficial star trek guide books and they tend to contradict themselves, which fans then pester the actors at cons, lore you know this from your star trek videos and different sources and what is cannon vs non-cannon...
Yea.. people get really passionate that their canon is the only canon to :p
It was the Douglas Dc-3 only in space. Well except the Dc-3 is beloved even though its 70 years old, and still in use.
DC-3/C-47 is a beautiful plane. Saw one painted all white with Red Cross marking on the wing and black paint in front the cockpit, make it look like a graceful swan.
In a lot of ways to me at least the Firefly series of ship reminds me of an older time. A Time when if something broke, you fixed it. It represents a time when you didn't just throw away every broken thing. In a lot of ways the ship almost takes on a life of its own. It really feels like the serenity is an actual character in the show rather than just the ship that they use. It's just one of those things that gives you the urge to get out there roll up your sleeves and really get your hands dirty.
Its the 70 year old farmer's pickup truck, instead of a modern van. No planned obsolescence, no parts that can't be replaced, and simple enough that even non-mechanics can repair it if they have the tools and experience.
If you are in to role playing games it is actually treated (all ships in the game) like a non player character. With strangths and weaknesses and a personality of sorts.
Its just Serenity...
@@therasheck Margaret Weis Productions. Excellent books.
I tell you what, you get a ship like that, treat her right, and she'll be with you for the rest of your days.
Know what's funny? That was the pitch the salesman throw at Mal at the start of that episode, but at the end of the episode where the scene and dialogue is shown, the salesman was talking about ANOTHER ship as Mal drifted away staring in the distance at Serenity. :P
Military version of the Series 3 was simply called "Firefly Gunboat"...
Thanks for playing the full intro flying sequence. Always chokes me up.

Beautiful ship and a great job with the review sir! So glad you decided to do this ship. I have been watching the series again with a group of friends and I still enjoy it.
Lore Reloaded: "This is the RV of the Verse"
Me: *Laughs in Spaceballs*
I think it’s sad that Firefly got cancelled, but if shows like Lost in Space are being remade, maybe it has a chance of being rebooted.
It wouldn't be the same..but could he fun
I think a reboot on netflix would be great, but it wouldn't be the same without the original cast.
I agree. I wouldn't accept any other cast
Yeah, but so many of the original cast have moved on, and as we all know, two of the characters were killed off in the movie. So it would have to be a new cast, perhaps with the same ship? An older Mal passes on his ship to his son "Val" as he is settling down on an quiet outer rim planet with his wife Inara and doesn't need the old ship anymore. The new kid is tasked with finding a crew and getting himself to work, etc etc etc...
Weary Man yeah. Because of the cast moving on and the deaths I don’t think it would ever work. Not unless the new cast was extremely good. They’d have to basically get it perfect.
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the original mule was a little ATV that was used to help rescue Mal and Wash and give back the meds that were stolen in The Train Job. Then they got an upgrade to the MF-813 for the movie. Presumably from the take they got from The Heist.
I'd have to double check but talking about what canon material says come standard with the ship..its the mule
Lore Reloaded thank you for the prompt reply. I'm just going from the TV show where it the ATV is known as "The Mule" until it is sacrificed in the rescue of Mal and Wash.
That also explains the movie upgrade.
Just for you... Love your work, by the way: firefly.wikia.com/wiki/Mule_bike
You are correct about there being an ATV they called "The Mule." The ATV was used in the TV show and the hover/anti-grav vehicle was used in the movie.
Did you double check? I'm waiting with baited breath..
I've never understood why Kaylee, who loved her Serenity so much, told Simon "Don't fly in anything with a Capisun 38 engine. They fall right out of the sky." That tells me the Firefly ships probably DIDN'T use those engines.
That would be the Firefly class Series 2, not Series 3. As mentioned in the video.
If the Firefly Series 3 was as rare as it was supposed to be, then it would have been an empty warning since the Series 2 would have been even more rare. Most likely, the Capisun 38 engine is used on some other transport that Kaylee didn't trust or disliked.
Well she did say "Anything with a Capisun 38" so while it may have been in some series of the Firefly class, it likely was also used in some other craft too.
It sounds to me like because that was such a funny line, fanfic likes to use it... even though it makes no sense given the line itself.
Darin Wagner Maybe it’s because they’re difficult to maintain and she thinks other ships with those engines don’t have whiz mechanics like her?
UA-cam can’t stop the signal
woot!
I aim to misbehave.
Big Damn heroes
Ain't we just?
already there...you're late to the game
Nice, very interesting. I was hoping you could touch on the "realism" of the ship's design, but there was much more than I ever knew about the ship's history. I love your summation about the ship, its crew, and the show itself were all part of the same message, just trying to get, nothing fancy, just get the job done.
Just seeing a few moments of the show and I get all misty-eyed and nostalgic
This is why I am styling my RV as a firefly class ship.
Outta gas was a great episode this is a far far underrated show.
If fox named the ships I am guess 1 4 3 2
In firefly they didn't have FTL drives, the way they get around the system was using a low yield nuclear blast the push the ships from one world to another, taking weeks instead of months
So ive been trying to research and the form of measurement they go by is astronomical units the distance between the center of the earth and the center of the sun. One thing i cant figure out though is this, how could the crew handle what may be 5.5 G that the ship creates when moving, going even so far as to not even seeming unphased while the ship is moving. Is it that the ship is making centrifugal force to counter the Gs or is it something else entirely.
@@gundamfan7541 Did you consider Kaylee's dialogue while talking with Mal's army friend in "The Message"? The ship design provides a regulated gravity in transit and compensates when coming into [and leaving] the gravity field of larger masses.
no, seriously?? no FTL for spaseships of that times is a biggest reason to spent like 13 years just to reach neightboring system. Literally.
I never thought of the Firefly class as an RV. I thought it more like the pickup-truck of the 'verse.
This is a good gorram lore vid on the best ruttin ship in the verse
tough, reliable, highly modifiable. My favourite combination
Like it? No. Love it! Thanks for any new talk on Firefly related topics.
Awesome vid. Though I am a fan of the mid 2000s licensed mech from Quantum Mechanix. They based a lot of stuff on the series production Bible and some in-depth discussions with the production team of Firefly. There was an indication that the military version of the Firefy has segnificent implications in the early war. The Independents reluctance to join the alliance and subsequent war wasn't a cut and dry thing. The Browncoats were quicker to organise than expected and the Alliance were not that ready for the war they ended up fighting. The main connection for the show was supposed to relate to serenity valley. The military Firefly was on its own not great, but deployed in packs and using but and tactics they were instrumental in significantly slowing the Alliance military machine. The whole point of serenity valley was that the main production for the Firefly was in serenity valley itself (see The Map of Serenity Valley limited Lithograph print run buy QMX). The Alliance were trying to disrupt the production of the Firefly to mitigate the successes of the Independents use of the Gunboats. This lead to the battle for Serenity valley that tied up a lot of the Browncoats military and allowed the Alliance to build up an overwhelming force that lead to an attack that ended the war (I also think that's also when Shadow, Malcolm's homeworld was bombed to uninhabitablity.)
Malcolm fell in love with the Firefly because the battle for serenity valley was about the Firefly factory facilities. The battle lost and his homeworld gone, the Firefly was the last part of the independence he had fought for he could keep.
I hate that this show was only 1 season, fortunately we still have 5 seasons of Babylon 5 :)
Indeed!
if this show kept going it may have taken the top spot for me over babylon 5 in terms of sci fi shows, however the Expanse is fast climbing that list for me :)
Only watched season 1 of the Expanse so far, il have to check out the new episodes
The Shadow War were the only good seasons of Babylon 5.
agreed, seasons 1 and 5 were lame 2,3,4 were dope (shadow war)
A TARDIS would still be my first choice but I would use the chameleon circuit to make it look like a Firefly.
I wish there was a UA-cam channel that would go over the guns of firefly and serenity. It be interesting to hear what someone has to say about someone using a 1911 for instance.
That's a great idea
It's not junk, it's "Vintage".
Well done. I've been a fan since the first episode aired and have a vast Firefly collection. My favorite piece: a piece of the agoudal meteorite that looks like a charred Serenity. Strange, but wonderful.
Thanks for sharing the link to these videos in your stream man! Love the content!
But we don't trust Capisun 38 engines.
They fall fight outta sky.
No mention of the Fire Fly Sport? That's my favorite. Bit cramped for multiple people but a single person or a couple if they are really fond of each other can make a good home out of it.
OK...I take back all the bad stuff I've ever said about you. Great video!
Why, what did you say?
It's very old joke.
Evetything's shiny when I'm watching this
Kaylee was smoking hot. The ship was always smoking. Coincidence?
..mother of god
Lore Reloaded you think you know somebody but do you truly know
Big Damn Heroes........Ain't we just.....Shiny. ISV Cereberus was badass.
That ship be so god darn shiny ain't nothin in the verse like it.
Kaylee was a mechanical genius, more so, a bona-fide prodigy
Wish they never canceled this show I rewatch it every 2 years and each time iam gripped by it
I do the same thing. It's honestly one of the greatest shows ever
It's just Serenity, not "The Serenity". I don't want to be that guy, but sometimes ya just have to be.
God damn I love that intro scene so much.
bast single season show ever! yea the producers got it wrong, but the writers got it so right!
loved the show, loved the ship, my only complaint is it didn't have cannons or any missiles. Would have loved to see Reynolds lead a Resurgent rebellion against the Alliance. Also I love the fact the Engineer gets transfer'd to Atlantis as Beckets replacement haha
Considering how little filmed material there is, the actual specifics of the ship (or at least Serenity) are remarkably well defined compared ton many other sci-fi properties. You can make a canonical complete schematic of the ship using only on screen information that totally eclipses what you can do for even the most thoroughly described Star Trek or Star Wars ships. One of the things I liked best about Firefly was that the ship itself felt fully thought out and logical,
It also helped that the ship was built as complete sets. The opening interior shots went end to end in single takes that showed the scope. Two levels, two sets. No arguments about crew quarters, space toilets or kitchens. Built in notions about hide holes, passenger dorms, multiple points of access.
was not aware of the military version that the brown coats used, no wonder Mal brought that one at the junkyard. now it makes sense why he named it Serenity, after the battle where his ride never came and the war ended for him.
Look up ISV Cereberus.
thanks, nice info, the Cerberus could take on small capital ships, those old firefly's were nice since you can do almost anything to em.
"of the galaxy?" The show takes place in a single solar system.
The two statements aren't contradictory
Yes they are
no they aren't. if the you say, 'the best of the galaxy!' and what you are talking about is the best of the galaxy, it would be the best of the solar system it is in.
now the quote is 'the RV of the Galaxy' which means that if there were no other RVs in the rest of the galaxy then it would be the only RV for any solar system in the galaxy, only that it only exists in the one solar system. of course if it exists in other solar systems then it could still be 'the RV of the Galaxy' and 'the RV of the Solar System.'
so not contradictory, unless you have more information.
Lonestar's Winnebago finally has some competition.
The concept is akin to the "Miss Universe" pageant; obviously not every young woman in the "universe" competes, in fact ONLY Earth humans compete.
The Firefly was a space Western.
..sure?
Talking about space Western, any plan to review some good old scifi Western cartoon like BraveStar, Galaxy Rangers or Saber Rider and the Star Sheriff?
I am supprised you were able to use such a long clip at the beginning...
Its because I am a big deal on UA-cam
well I agree that you are a big d**k on UA-cam... funny your auto-correct messed up there... but still I am surprised... so you did not get hit for that?
I didnt..Ofcourse I find fox to be more forgiving then CBS
I put in a good word for him. I mean.... they laughed at me... but I did the thing.
Oh you two! BFF's forever!
Shiny let's be bad guys.
No, Lore Reloaded, what have you done?! Arrrgh.... now I crave watching Firefly again. And after watching it I crave to watch more, but there isn't more and I have an existential crisis and.... ;-(
Apart from triggering me emotionally, nice video as always :-D You are right, I do like the UA-cam cut more in this case.
In the movie Ready Player One, A Firefly makes two easter egg appearances
Firefly was a great and underated show. Please one day do a video on Babylon 5 which I hope will one day be rebooted
Maybe an RV with a U-haul trailer built in, 'cause of the cargo hold. -- Oh, I miss Firefly. Such.a great show; so foolish to cancel it.
2:05
What uppity purple-belly said that? Them's fighting words!
Where's the trouble? Just let Kaylee throw together something with enough life support don't got no drive, plate it up after throwin' em in it, throw the whole mess Mirandawards, no trouble.
I love the Serenity. Great ship. Great show.
Ahh the Firefly series 3. The only other ship in the 'verse I would want to fly if I couldn't get my hands on a YT-1300.
No it probably had 48 RCS thrusters. That's actually pretty realistic.
I love that boat.
Indeed
I away s love this show ❤
Firefly is a great TV show, Love it .
I remember the episode where they were hauling cows. About 30 of them from the looks of it, less than you can fit in a semi truck. Shipping them out of your local gravity well and off to another planet, on a vessel crewed by several people. The economics of that are completely baffling, even in a situation where space travel is that routine.
Especially when you consider the logistics of feed, water, atmo, veterinary needs over several weeks with no room to separate. I would have hated working in the mechanical access beneath the cargo bay during that run.
Its like the comparision of old cars to new cars. Old cars were made to take it in a crash and the new ones get trashed if they get hit by another car going 35 mph.
indeed
She's a ship kept flying by love, you don't love her and she'll rock you around before dropping you down. Never say an unkind word about the pretty lady or you'll be bring down a world of trouble upon yourself.
the show was awesome enjoyed the movie still wanted more. great job lore
About time to give browncoasts some love lol
Seems like it's the Joss Whedon version of the YT-1300 Light Freighter from Star Wars, the Serenity being his answer to the Millennium Falcon.
I always thought of the Firefly as the K-car of spacecraft.
I wish i could buy one
I haven't seen one of these done about Roj Blake's ship the Liberator. It was a beautiful ship created by the BBC for the show Blake's 7 created by Terry Nation, the guy who created the Daleks. Have at it and let's see what you come up with. Bet you can't do it.
I see what you did there
Lore Reloaded Go on then, consider it the one that almost got away.... and may yet still evade you. LOL
funfact in BSG on the first episode when Roslin finds out she has cancer you can see a firefly landing in the backround
Yea.. they have a few cameos like that.. you see a clear as day star trek vessel to
one of my favorite parts of this show is how all cursing in CHINESE. LOL.
it added a real cool dynamic..
YOU LITTLE (SPEAKING A LOT OF CHINESE)!!!!
@@LoreReloaded also allows them to avoid Standards & Practices forcing rewrites.
seems like an old work horse type ship -like in star trek older models of ship form the movie tos period are still seen because they still work even after decades
I love this show. It had such potential. There should be a speacial place in Hell for the FOX execs that screwed it up.
A level they reserve for child molesters, and people who talk at the theater.
There is. It's called low ratings.
Of course FOX executives talked at the theater. Do you think they ever paid attention to the actual content in the screening room?
"Ship like this, be with you till the day you die."
That's cause it's a deathtrap
Hideous ship, but goes to show, there's something for everyone out in space.
Wait, there was an actual RV in space, in Spaceballs
That's the joke!
@Lore Reloaded you really ought to do a Spaceballs lore ep, if only to poke fun at the silliness of doing a Spaceballs lore ep.
@@Gartral Show the evolution from Stripes to Spaceballs for an April Fool's Day episode.
Ohhh Nathan. Never change
What I'd like to see done with the ship serenity is you have a turd from a tank on top but it'd be a real gun setup projectiles could be quickly selected automatic loader send the projectile out at Wharf One capability speed the front whatever 30 to40 mm Canon setup a 50 caliber mini type weapon setup
The serenity is like a Ak cheap dirty but reliably.
I would have thought the Mule was something they picked up, aftermarket, since it wasn't seen till the movie.
That's what I thought to, but 'canon' books made it apart of it.. It seemed like it was added by the crew.
In fact, in the series, they referred to their ATV as the Mule.
@@SaulOhio Until the events of War Stories, it was an ATV quad. The Flying Mule only came about with the movie.
Now go find all the movies and shows that have the firefly easter eggs. BSG, and Star Wars come to mind.
i wish a lived on a firefly ship myself
Get on it Eaglemoss, I got an empty spot on my desk.
#boom
And while your at it, make an Orville too!
Best show ever created that was cancelled after one season...
A show with great potential called " Dark Matter " suffered the same fate. 😬
Sense8 got 2 seasons, but a lot of us just see it as havin' got 1 1/2 and a _Serenity_ analog as weren't worth the gorram rush...
I really need to watch the show sometime
A lot of people like it
My paper mache wolf looks like that
Yes my paper mache wolf
It's now viable as a spaceship
I liked that movie but the ship's system looks like a antique it needed upgrades
The only other "pile of junk" I love like this ship is the Millennium Falcon.
The Firefly ship was in Battlestar Galactica.
I think the FIREFLY ship Serenity was the best, most important character on the show or in the movie!
