Parthiban cries in the coffee shop scene....not because he killed 5 people....because he is revealed to be leo....because parthiban mentally believes himself that leo is dead... Leo is the villain in this movie

He clearly says in the police station to his wife, I dunno what happened after the psycho went near his kid, he says he blanked out and he wasnt in his control... after the shooting he is shocked and realizes what has happened and breaks down... he did call his daughter "Chintu.." she replies back "Appa..." that she is safe. I dont understand what is there not to understand. He does check his daughter if she is safe.
He breaks down coz the life he is living away from the past, has all gone to waste... hence he is heart broken... he shows his vulnerability for his family... if that scene isnt there, then too people would have complained. I think Lokesh did a great job there.
"I wish it had 30% less swag", I'm glad that I and Jaby are on the same page on this one because throughout the second half that's what I felt, although I did enjoy the movie overall. It could have stayed grounded and real in the screenplay.
The plot is very weak. Reason of killing own daughter was pathetic. A typical salman khan movie with a better bgm and director. Very dissapointed by Lokesh

19.05 there are two groups within one cartel one is loyal to leo while another group is loyal to anthony and harold. the person in prison who is narrating story to joshy and person showing orphange proof to leo's wife both are loyal to leo and used to work for him. anthony and harold wanted to sacrifice leo's sister they knew that leo and his people will resist hence they were tied to pillar and later when leo and sister tried to escape both of them freed his people and two group were fighting.

I think what is interesting to me the most, is that at the end vijay's expression upon hearing kamal haasan's laugh was more of like 'oh man not him again', as supposed to who is this. And also, the connection of the orphanage. Vikram was adopted by his son from an orphanage, Leo was from an orphanage. Possibility of the black squad helping leo to change his identity? Just some thoughts. Not tryna say i found it out first or something. Cheers.

Theory-1=leo survived the blast in that drug factory leo used the orphanage as an excuse hide his identity
Theory-2= leo survived the drug factory blast after the explosion he was in an “orphanage” getting his injuries treated and thats where leo met vikram
Now my conclusion could be leo met vikram at the orphanage vikram convinced leo to become a good guy
And then let’s say after 10 years vikram and leo meet again in the phone call
Yeah I also have the same thoughts. Leo survived the blast and then he met Vikram. Vikram helps Leo to change his identity (Since Vikram already changed his own identity as Karnan in the movie "Vikram"). After helping, they both separate their ways to live their lives (Vikram as Karnan & Leo as Parthiban). After that, these events occur (Kaithi, Vikram & Leo). When Vikram finds out Parthiban/Leo burned down the drug factory, he calls him to join the team. Because the drug lord Rolex is coming for him. 😈😈
11:42 Harold said that he is parthiban not Leo because that gun was a old gun from the 90s and you have to pull the hammer by your thump to shoot otherwise the gun won't work At first Parthiban didn't pull the hammer when he aimed the gun towards Harold and if he was Leo then he would have pull the hammer of the gun before aiming towards him
But when Harold said that Parthiban Pulled the hammer of th gun which shows that he knew how to load a old gun that's means he is Leo I know it's a bit confusing to understand

Swag is important, but here it was overblown and overdone as usual with thalapathy movies

yes, for the South Indian audience it's very much toned down. But as an Indianized version with commercial elements and having Vijay as the lead, Lokesh couldn't have got much options to not compromise on a little bit swag here and there just for the fans. Kaithi and Vikram too had it.

@@rajirvin1 im also a south indian, “toned down” cannot justify horror writing, vijay acted somehow better, but the car chase scene and the fight scenes? Logic somehow flies out the window sometimes. Even the sacrifice element in the movie, just screams lazy writing, vijays “moodanambikai” is next lever cringe. I genuinely started laughing when the car chase scene happened, even animes have more logical action sequences at times. As a person who loves movies, i cant bring myself to say this movie was decent, and none of us should defend this movie if we want better movies in the future

Agree with your review guys, on my 1st watch i also had all these points but later I realised few things, as you must be knowing this is 3rd movie in LCU, after Kaithi and Vikram so i think Vikram character n story would be central and all other would revolve around it. So Kaithi and this Leo are like character development intro movies to dilli and Leo. Later these will be integrated to Vikram plot of drug fighting and these guys have skills and insider knowledge to the drug empire. Vijay is a big actor so I am sure Lokesh is saving something big for Vijay in upcoming movies. Vikram movie was great story wise n by the same director too so he intentionally downplayed story part in Kaithi and Leo. Another thing was Anthony and Harold didn't want to kill Leo as he knew how to revive Dhatura factory, they just wanted him to accept that he is leo and may be forced him into their business. Movie was also about how Leo is honestly forcing himself into his new life but fate made him ready for Vikram n LCU.
I agree with that less style more raw. The car secuence will be amazing if the CGI will be better. The flashback part could be better (yeah will all know is the perspective of the drunk guy but still is in the movie). The market fight scene will be better with less slow, couse the choreo is great but too much slow motion cut me off, it will be perfect if it had been more raw, like the cafe fight scene. The cast was great, even the "teenager" XD. Overall great movie but could be better, I trust that Lokesh will be read all the problems of the movie and he will do someting better and great for the next one

Just so you know, he said that because of how bad people were reacting to that flashback. You wouldn't spend that much money and shoot such intricate and expensive flashbacks to just deem it fake. They are just trying their best to get out of the mess of a flashback
There is a difference bt history of violence,in that film hero confess he is don before interval .but in leo parthiban confess only in end.this is pure acting oriented subject.vijay have nailed it he made me believe that he was parthiban (joshy said to his wife and, parthiban and sathya emotional scene) after these scene untill before we all had a doubt
Instead of being animal rescuer, he could be like some trainer for shooting and martial arts or something and it would have been better.
I liked it till that part, hence y I didn’t like the climax. The movies was pointless after Sanjay Dutt’s character died. Vijay said he believed himself to be parthiban so why did he laugh and confess to his uncle ? There was no point in Harold Das’s character or parthiban confessing he’s Leo. Should’ve ended the movie with Sanjay’s death and Kamal Hassan calling parthiban and calling in Leo would’ve been nice .

1. In the warehouse fight scene, the gangsters were fighting each other because as Achara guessed it right there were 2 factions. Sanjay Dutts gangsters wanted to kill Leo nd his sister. Where as Leo's gangsters wanted to make sure Leo and his sister survived.
2. After the Cafe shootout Partiban broke down rather than checking on his daughter for two reasons-
a. Post killing Partiban realised now there's no going back now, this event will blow up and his pics will be everywhere, his old life will now catch up and his family won't be safe anymore
b. He is Leo he is confident of his aiming prowess, so he knew he killed the psycho and his daughter is safe.
3. Why LCU universe - image Kamal Hassan, Surya , Dilli, Vijay together on the screen...jeez it would be historic.

My main problem with the car chase sequence is that antony had just revealed that his son was in one of his cars and didn't specifically tell which one, even if he wasn't in his cars,leo had no way to know that . And while chasing antony ,leo blew up atleat 4 to 5 cars. So he wasn't concerned about his son?
Such inconsistencies were present through out the movie ,
Leo seemed like a half-hearted effort from Lokesh kanagraaj. And while the score by aniruddh was good ,it hardly complemented the movie and at time was loud and unnecessary. I really wanted every upcoming lokiverse movie to be on par with vikram. It has great potential as a long running series of movies. But the ball dropped with leo. I really hope kaithi 2 doesn't suffer in similar manner, with loud and unnecessary background music and stays grounded and raw as the first film. I hope we get to know more about rolex in kaithi 2 before his own film. I think the high expectations set by vikram contributed in leo being a lackluster. The title character wasn't explored much. I really want to know more about leo rather than parthiban.
About that car blowup and concerns about son.... Could be that they might have already taken him elsewhere when Antony Das went to Parthiban's house. Just my thoughts.

Initially when I heard rumours of Leo being part of LCU, I was hoping that they were not true. Because Vijay's star status is too big and his acting is generally not at par with the other LCU actors; most of them are national award winners. Also the LCU had a grounded approach with the protagonists suffering through a lot before getting to the clap-worthy moments. Vijay is too larger-than-life to be able to pull off such a grounded role.
But I was shell-shocked while watching Leo because my theory turned out to be incorrect. Vijay delivered a really good acting performance and he did his best to fit in to the needs of the character, and the problems with Leo were creative choices of the director.
Now that Vijay has been shoe-horned into the LCU, director Loki now has an opportunity to not give in to fan pressure and allow Vijay to deliver a stellar performance without any baggage of the formulaic hero notions.
I liked how jaby reviewed the movie technically. Very nice bro 😊👍. Of course there is lot of technical stuff in this movie to talk about.

That scene with backstory, is not real, the prisoner just made it up/his perspective, in the next movie or so, the true backstory will be revealed, so we will know whether leo really the hero or anti-hero

Jaby Explained The Problems of the movie very accurately. I had the same feelings as he did during watching the movie. Aniruddh composed cool music but it didn't elevate the movie. It didn't have impact on lifting up the quality of the movie. When I watched the movie I didn't appreciated the background score very much but when I listened it separately I quite enjoyed it. The thing which I liked the most in the movie was Acting by Vijay and Trisha, they both did very well in the movie. Thing which I most hate in the movie was the characters of Antony and Harold Das. There characters felt hollow to me, their was no attempt made to make us understand the motive of those characters. Movie could have been good if Lokesh had put more emphasis on the story and better villains, now it is a average movie.

well the whole concept of leo was a character study of parthiban aka leo, since its a character oriented film the theme itself is like consequences revolving around the main character and how he reacts idt the film needed another main character or a show stealer its purely focused on tht character itself. its clear the villain and hero of the film is leo das and parthiban its actually a very underrated movie i wud sayy it deserves very much credit, i mean history of violence was also a character oriented film

Yes, 2nd half could have been a lot better... story wise and the treatment wise... But I think the 1st half of the movie is one of the best I have seen in the recent times.
Westerners should understand, its the heroes that bring in the audience to the theatre and the director needs to satisfy hero's fans primarily (the mainstream movies - Hero oriented movies) There are directors who have made it big, they set the rules for their movies. If one goes for these big star movies, one needs to understand some of the style is for the fans, its they who bring in all the hype and money.
Leo bursted whole factory for the revenge but not to destroy the drugs and Vikram phone call at climax appreciating and call him for help to create drug free society was the hilarious moment 🤣🤣

The director revealed that the flashback is not accurate as it is said by a drunk man and there was also a deleted scene where he said this story has many perspectives,this is mine. So we'll get the real flashback in the future movies of LCU

PS. I dont believe there was ever a sacrifice but a power struggle that Antony was not aware of. The truths is Harold killed Elisa Das to assume power. This he said with his own mouth. Antony however may not know Harold killed her and assumes Leo did ...I have watched this movie so many times now and its more and more sinister.
We can dispute the flashback as the blend of truth, fiction and embellishment as set up by Parthiban/Leo.
We know Antony did not shoot Leo because there are no wounds on Leo's body and the movie has been deliberately showing Leo's back from the first scene to the last scene...This is also why Joshy does not believe him to be Leo.
Interestingly enough there are multiple versions of this movie and the Netflix version is different from the one I saw a few times in cinema. Leo did not confess to Anthony Das in my version

@tushar_b_995 Yes, it's just a simple story, but I don't think Lokesh is that much careless to not show a bullet mark in Parthiban's body. Harold and Antony never said even once that Leo is dead or killed. Something might have happened in the past which they are hiding. While watching it for the first time, I thought Trisha would visit Antony Das after the medical shop fight, and Antony would be the one revealing the past.
The flashback of Leo is the perspective of Hridiyaraj. The flashback of Leo might be fake.
I enjoyed the movie 😍💞in theatre you are right it has lots of swag because thats how vijay fans love but also vijay fan not expect swag in most of parts we too want less swag and more acting that vijay can do but directors I don't know what they think director has to give him less swag its not Vijay's fault its directors fault the Hyena scene is so amazing that my frnd at first thought its a real hyena 😂🤦♀️i too want director to use vijay anna in a good way because he is an amazing actor but the movie is block buster hit and just 🔥🔥🔥

Interesting review Jaby. The style part is mostly a cultural, or specifically a Tamil thing, since we all as an audience associate "cool" or mainstream cinema with "stylised" cinema. Would have equally loved to hear your thoughts on worked or what you liked in the film as opposed to just what didn't work :)

Not always. South, specifically Tamil films are stylized for mass appeal, but lately, a lot of south films are over doing it. Everything should have a balance. This was too much. Ghilli was far better. A film with a good plot, characters made sense,…rewatchable, in my opinion

@@sharangsharu5079 the small cameo of LCU in between was well and good. The story feels complete at the end trying to bring leo into the world of vikram is a bad move doesn't feel organic. Let's be honest given the time line of lokesh Films 171, kaithi 2, vikram 2. Leo 2 will not happen for another 4 years even if vijay is gonna get cameo in vikram 2.

@@muhammmednihal6880 I think vijay will agree to go under production banner of kamal hassan and agree to do a cameo for vikram 3? Kamal aldready tried to produce leo but vijay didn't agree. So bringing all current trending big stars under one film is aldready a difficult task now coz of salary problems. Giving hopes to the audience there will be future LCU movies involving all big stars is a big risk and only few production banners like lyca or sun pictures can give a budget like that.
you should react on theories about Leo
1. The guy in jail says he only told a short part of the back story
2. He left das and co. abt 23 yrs ago and only been with wife for 20 yrs - 3 yrs gap
3. When Napoleon says about Dilli he don't ask who Dilli is.
4. The bible used for human sacrifice is in his box.
5. He knows about Vikram.
6. Antony don't have any reason to kill Gabby(hanging from café board), but Leo has (identity).

I don't know why everyone wanted more swag rather than subtle touch. Lokesh needs to try different things to improve himself to give a better project for a final showdown. The tone of the movie was good and well written to confuse the audiences, like the prisoner story can be fake or he don't know full story anything can be a case which can improve the depth of this movie. And for the music i was shocked they didn't use the full bgm but that was necessary for the tone of the movie. because till the end there was no clarify that he was a LEO.
The song choice cultural context - its very common here, the lines are always explanatory of the situation. maybe you guys finding it the first time since they're in english. Also, dance monkey is popular among kids here cuz of its catchy music, and isn't meme'd here like in the west

Even though I was a bit disappointed by the movie, I still enjoyed it. And really enjoyed Vijay’s acting, he gave it all with his acting (usually I am critical of Vijay’s acting, but this one he was very impressive)

I’d recommend watching two of mani ratnams sincerest classics, Roja and kannathil muthamittal, I’m certain you’ll enjoy these two and personally I feel like it’s a detox from over the top films like Leo, please check it out guys❤️

the reason behind this much swag in this movie is the fan base of thalapathy vijay
The First half was perfectly executed and everything worked out. But things got the other way in the second half.
1. The Cult practice story did not satisfy the movie.
2. The action scene became more like playing a Game where one Normal Main character keeps on defeating the 100s of enemies no matter what.
3. Sister's death part failed to connect with the audience.
4. Should have reduced the swag in the second part.
The Second half did pull the movie back. But apart from that, the other part of the movie worked out very well.

How detailed and suspicious south indian movies are! I think the last voice was Kamal Haasan's voice. You know why? Because i heard the 'VIKRAM' word in the song played at the last. And VIKRAM was kamal haasan's movie. I heard the same style which is sung in the VIKRAM title track. They made me believe that there will be part 2 of LEO in which Kamal will be there. (Only my thoughts)
