I've wondered about Smalls. Thanks for showing us.
i think of it as one step up from wet food, but not as great as raw. i wish they would get rid of the peas - but still 10x better than others.

I just got a first box of Smalls last month. Read reviews talking about how they changed the recipe/process. Wow it doesn't look like this at all anymore. My cat still wants to see something crunchy before he starts eating the smalls, leaving the dry kibble.
Honestly, the dry isn’t really helpful. Full of glyphosates. See if you can find something that’s freeze dried that he likes. Not a fan of kibble for cats at all.

Doubt if you were to ask him that he misses the “crunch”. They spray kibble to make it addictive. That’s why he’s missing it. If it was truly the crunch, then give him a whole dead prey to munch on. That would be more what he’d eat in the wild.

VERY NICE VID! I will definitely try this, Jenny! Still frustrated and not getting any real help from the holistic vet but have to go in for a "counsel"...have to talk more to her about Frankie's "dry food" habit! He just won't eat the wet (no matter what kind .. yet). she says to "hang in there"...not the answer I want!!!! ..but this type of food is a very good idea....Anyway, great video, very informative, and of course, with the "stars", always a hit! Probably to get to the vitamin count or something. But I understand the question for an obligate carnivore. I’ll ask.
This is what Smalls said when I inquired, from their FAQs: "We add veggies to mimic what cats would naturally be eating if they were in the wild. When cats hunt and kill their prey, they get some veggies in their diet by consuming the contents of their prey's stomach. So instead of adding some pre-digested plant matter to our wet food, we just add in a few vegetables (under 10%) to deliver important vitamins and minerals that would otherwise be added via supplements. We feel that fresh food is better than supplements for people and for cats!"
@@Floppycats Given the nutrient bioavailability of vegetables or fruit is negligible for an obligate carnivore, I wouldn't depend on it for any extra nutrients like they say. They need to have animal sources for extra nutrients for them to benefit from it. Also be careful of foods that have legumes or peas as they might bind to certain nutrients that cats need.
Because it is cheaper for the company and they know there are plenty of idiots like this channel owner who think "Hey...vegetables are good for me!" and without an education, don't know that cats get literally ZERO nutritional value from them. These foods are not just overpriced, but are DANGEROUS when morons like this channel owner feed their cats the same amount of food by weight as they used to, but now a big portion is vegetables, thereby starving their cats nutritionally.
Wow. I stumbled on this from a Jackson Galaxy video about what to look for in the ingredients label, and Smalls contains many red flags too high on the ingredients list. Way too much protein from vegetables, and lots of phosphates. The video said you want at least the first 5 ingredients to be meat. And yes, despite what these companies say "meat by products" is fine. All that is is parts of the animal that humans don't eat (eyes, heart, etc.) ground up. Perfectly fine for cats and better for them than vegetables. But these companies prey on people fearing the word by-product and humanizing their cats. So Smalls ingredient list is: Chicken, chicken liver, green beans, water sufficient for processing, yeast, tricalcium phosphate, kale, magnesium proteinate...and just a whole bunch of other stuff that isn't meat. The vegetables build up the protein percentage, but not in a way that a cat's body can process it. A cat food that is 10% protein with virtually all of it from meat is far better for cats than this with 13% protein, but a significant portion from vegetables.
Cat lovers, please don't think "More expensive must mean better." You are better off literally getting the cheapest store brand food than this. And way better getting cheap Friskies canned food. And if you must pay more for some reason, there are far better higher end stuff.
