      They do advertise Raphael’s company Fort Belvedere quite a lot, but at the same time it’s not universal in most aspects (all the socks are FB for instance, but Preston commonly wears other brands of cuff links) and I believe that it’s simply because FB is high quality and Raphael owns the company so he has a lot of those products.

    I've just found my very first suit. It's a roughly 1000 dollar suit, that I picked up from a thrift store for 15 dollars :P It's in great condition and fits me surprisingly well. I'd say at least a 90 percent fit. Can't wait to get it tailored for a perfect fit. It goes well with the 600 dollar shoes that I got for 20 dollars :)

    There's a recycling center close to me, they have racks full of all kinds of clothes for the equivalent of like 1,50 to 3,00 dollars per piece (including sports jackets and even suits among other things). I lost a ton of weight and built a pretty good wardrobe on a very tight budget, of course there's a lot of very outdated stuff but with patience you find a lot, might not apply to other parts of the worlds but I'm in the EU myself. Clothing stores also have pretty decent clearance racks and I've picked a lot of those up as well, they're often the weirder sizes and/or colors but again, with patience I often find something I need

    Others have said it and I agree. In the States, you can buy 5-6 outfits of high-quality, high-end name brand clothes for $100 or less at thrift stores. It is really amazing what you can find. I have walked out of thrift stores with 3 large bags of clothes for $30.00. Clothes that would have probably cost me $500+ at full retail price.

    I just want to say thank you, for all that you do to educate us on great style. I agree that the most important thing I have learned is to know size and stick with versatile (read plain and timeless) items. Then use your accessories to pop. this will save you tons of time shopping because you can skip the things that don't work and you can shop online with more confidence. since i started watching you and Antonio and Aaron I have trimmed my hair, have a better shave, moved from uniform pants to brand name that fit, had my work shirts tailored and started wearing a bow tie on a regular basis. I am already being courted by other companies. soon I hope to support fort belvedere!!! with more than just thanks.

    Good wording on "Most salesman". That logic does not apply to all of us, I deal with a lot of "I've never worn a suit before" customers so I find a clear obligation to educate in what will look right & what proper fit is needed. Honesty is the best policy over getting a sale at the cost ill fitting & outfit choice.

      This channel contains good advice for anyone who wants to dress classic - that's a choice to begin with, as some people want to dress fashionable or comfortable or don't think about it at all. I've watched so many of these videos in the last week or so and I can't wait to apply the advice.
      I think the emphasis on finding a good tailor is really great advice for looking good on a budget - women's bodies are much more variable than men's so fit is even harder to achieve off the rack, if not impossible.

    Wonderful video with lots of important tips and good explanations. Especially the part about salesman.
    People in Germany need to hear this. Some think: "If I just spend 800€ for that Hugo Boss suit and a salesman agrees, then it has to be good for me."
    My personal opinion: If you do not have the knowledge to buy from a vintage/second hand store, then you should not buy off the rack suits.
    Save that 800€ for your Hugo Boss Outfit and get a suit for 200€ more from a tailor instead.

    My tip without watching the video is thrift stores. I'm a retired disabled Vet and I have found high end items at them. Some examples are a Burberry coat for 10$ that goes for 2000$ and Ferragamo shoes for 20$ that go for 600$ and the shoes might have been worn once.

    Shoulder width is especially important. I don't like it when I put on a jacket and it almost feels like I will dislocate my shoulder or tear the jacket. This is a problem with old, forgotten jackets that people outgrow and they forget that these things might not fit after all those years while it was in the closet.

  • @alexsmith4155
    @alexsmith4155 4 роки тому +2

    As a salesman, I agree that you shouldn't always trust a salesman. I have seen countless uneducated salesmen that sell customers items that don't fit, look good or suit the occasion. They simply lack passion and simply are only in it for a job. I try to do my part to change this however so I have educated myself so that I can provide a service rather than simply gain a sale.

    Adding to 7.: If you have something you don't wear often, protect it against moths which may eat and thereby damage your clothes (especially your blazers/jackets). For example you can hang up some strong-smelling (fresh) lavender or any strong natural perfumed flowers in your closet (moths HATE this) or you can wrap them up in big plastic bags. I recommend the lavender because it adds that nice little touch of freshness to the clothes.
    Really great video, thank you for sharing a little bit of your wisdom!

    All good advice, esp. buying used. Most of my favorite jackets are from estate sales, sometimes still with the tags. Also yes to buying for the long term. Among other old stuff, I still wear a pair of charcoal gray wool flannel dress pants that I bought over 32 years ago.

  • @RobertJonesWightpaint
    @RobertJonesWightpaint 7 років тому +2

    Very interesting and useful. One thing stood out for me, and that was the comment about variation is sizes - how very true that is: a 44" chest from one manufacturer will fit well, whereas from another it can be too tight to do the top jacket button up. A trouser with a 40" waist will fit with room to spare IF it's a high-waisted cut, but would generally be quite impossible to fasten in the lower fittings that are now so common (I read with envy of the young man below who has a 34" waist: I had once - around 40 years ago!). Even shirt collars vary by a vital half inch or more - so that whereas a 16 1/2" will fit comfortably from one brand, it has to be 17" in another or I should be strangled. For those of us who do not have access to high quality tailoring, or even an alterations tailor, shopping for clothes by mail is fraught with problems: I have to remember which of the three or four shirt makers I use have easier fitting than others; as for jackets and trousers, there's no real alternative other than to visit a store and try them on, or a second-hand clothes shop - or made to measure. And the last of these is now extremely expensive (although worth the money) when you have to factor in travelling to the tailor. The high street tailor is virtually extinct outside of the major cities in the UK - small wonder that so many men are so badly dressed, in ill-fitting polyester or the ubiquitous saggy jeans.

    I really agree on the fact that people who work in stores often don’t know what they’re doing.
    I went to a very popular clothing store here in Germany (Peek&Cloppenburg), I was in the shoe department and was looking for some brogues since I never owned a pair because I never really cared. I was 16, now 17.
    There was a man asking the person working there where he could find loafers.
    Of course I knew what he meant and I expected the employee to know what loafers are.
    Surprisingly, the employee had no clue what a loafer was.
    It was a woman in her mid 30s I would say, with a suit on.

    The working class needs your help. I know it's a hard topic, but can you make a video for the "Blue collar workers"? I work for one of the departments in my city where I find myself surrounded by adults who look like they're working in their pajamas. There is no need for that, and it looks really unprofessional. We need more videos like this, and some that go a step further giving more examples. I know this is a hard topic to cover. The men who built the skyscrapers back in the day always dressed well. What happen to that?

    • @littlerhino2006
      @littlerhino2006 6 років тому +2

      Daddy Oh when you say they look they're dressed in PJs, are you referring to the fit or the fabric? Most companies will use a separate service for their unoforms and the quality is usually terrible. I used one service that seemed like every pair of pants was different in every imaginable way. Getting things altered seemed to require a congressional consensus and regularly I wouldn't get all of my uniforms back for the week, even when I wasn't asking for alterations or repairs. It was easier to wear the oversized trash and not make too much noise about it than to not have anything to wear at all.

    I appreciate the comment on coat hangers - I am fanatical about coat hangers and a bad one will leave even the best clothes looking like trash. Cheap coat hangers are a curse!

    For me personally. I don't buy expensive shoes that often anymore because I over-pronate and so the heels get worn out more quickly, regardless of how much my shoes cost! Therefore, I tend not to spend big money (when I have it, which is rarely!) on shoes because I'm probably going to need to get them re-heeled or replaced altogether.
    The other thing to point out with sales- I always take a small size and have got items heavily discounted but the reason stores can't sell them is that my size isn't popular. That's also why the smallest size in some stores is "medium" as they simply can't sell enough smalls so they don't stock any.

    Amazing video, Sven. Hopefully you'd consider making a video for the outdoorsy, rough-around-the-edges gentlemen out there. You've advocated for practicality and appropriateness throughout your videos. It would be very profitable for us outdoors types to hear you opinion on the matter!

    Fantastic outfit Raphael, I really like the combination of orange tie, navy waistcoat and tan jacket. I'm definitely going to buy a waistcoat now, haha! The pocket square is a great little touch, complementing the shirt. Thanks for the education BTW, I must have watched nearly all your videos and have learned an awful lot from them. The interviews are particularly interesting and your enthusiasm for your subject is infectious. Keep up the good work, my favourite menswear channel on UA-cam!

    Thank you so much for the informative video. I've been fortunate to aquire some incredible articles of clothing for next to nothing. l have been hesitant to share or discuss the origin of these heirloom pieces, that was until now. I also get spending fifty bucks on a pocket square. I liken it to a fine patina on hardware of furniture or a ladys exquisite broach worn with an understated black dress. Keep up the good work! Have Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    I can't find a video hosted by Preston. I wish I had commented on it. I appreciate that you both understand that not everyone has a lot of money. You both understand that some people among one's family and friends may think dressing up is silly. And, I was pleasantly surprised to see you recommend second hand stores. I like your videos.

    All of my suits I've bought from one store. The Salvation Army Thrift Store. I have found suits regularly from Jos. A Banks & other top brands. All of there suits are $25 no matter the manufacturer & the first Wednesday of the month all there clothing is half off. As for accessories I've found the best bet for budget accessories are the subscription boxes Gentleman's Box & Sprezzabox. For $25 & $28 respectively you get a tie, a pair of socks & 2-3 other items such as tie clips, lapel pins & pocket squares.
