- The UN Human Rights Chief - Volker Turk - says he's 'troubled' by measures taken to disperse protests against Israel's war on Gaza in universities across the U.S.
Dozens of protesters have barricaded themselves inside a building at Columbia University in New York.
The group has taken over Hamilton Hall, which has a history of student takeovers, including during the Vietnam war.
They unfurled a banner calling it 'Hind's Hall', in memory of a six-year-old girl killed in Gaza.
It came hours after the university started suspending student demonstrators who defied an ultimatum to leave their encampments.
Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey is monitoring developments at the Colombia University in New York where it all began and Shihab Rattansi will have the latest from George Washington University in the US capital.

The bravery and moral courage shown by Americans protesting at Universities around the country is incredible and overwhelming to witness. And not all of the protestors are students. Many of the protestors are faculty and members of the community.

The Coast Guard is exempt from Posse Comitatus and can use force, even lethal force without being prosecuted. More likely the national guard or state militia might be called in to break up the demo stration and arrest any resisters. Their demands will not be met and they are pointlessly putting themselves at risk.
