    I think that many ppl don't understand the real power of the dialogue that came after the earthquake. What Mariko said is a brilliant summary of why Japan nation is the way it is. Living in such a hostile environment, and facing death constantly, determined the Japanese approach to the matters of life and death. Death for the Japanese was something very normal, equal to life itself. Japanese believed, that they would be reborn or continue their existence as spirits. They didn't see death in the way Europeans did. P.S. Natto is a fermented soy beans: it actually smells and looks worse than it tastes :)

      Back in feudal Japan, war was common like fighting every other Tuesday. If you don't die in war, dying by earthquakes or a tsunami could be your fate. That was life. However, the Japanese were so good at keeping records of their history and culture even if they burned down a castle here and there, and clans being completely dessimated all over Japan.

      This is a fabulous and insightful comment. Something not many reactors are picking up on, that the series is showing. Far too many reactors are applying their 21st century, Western values to everything and not picking up the insights on display.

    I'm convinced Yabushige is just trying to keep his head the whole time. He knows the games that the big guys are playing, but he is happy being in the middle. He knows loyalty to Torunaga is dangerous, but he also knows if betrayal is too open and too soon, he will also die. So he keeps trying to stay on side with Torunaga and Ishido. It's clear Torunaga knows this. I honestly think Yabushige is smart enough to know that being too big is not good for his health. It's funny because he's kinda caught between life and death from episode 2 onwards, and that happens to be the moment that fascinates him. Almost as if his perverse fixation on watching how others face death curses him to constantly live on the verge of his own.

    You have to remember that environment shapes people and culture, and that's what Mariko was explaining. The reason their houses are ''flimsy'' is practical. And the reason they think about death and are ''comfortable'' with it (as much as you can be), is because it's always around the corner in one way or another, whether it is nature or warfare.

    The Portuguese cannons were perfectly fine, they simply deceived the Japanese into believing they weren't accurate so when the time came to take over Japan completely, they (The Japanese) wouldn't be prepared or expect an assault from the sea.

    1 Koku (一石) is Japanese unit of volume. Approximately Equivalent to 180 litres, or about 150 kg of rice.
    So his yearly salary is 240 Koku 36 tons of rice. Rice can then be traded into other goods such as livestock or coin.
    Simular to salt for the romans, or grain and gold for Egypt.

    This show is stunning. Aside form the story, it is how well all the "minor" things get care and attention.
    They are not just speaking Japanese, but old form. Much like performing Shakespear. The mass majority of viewers will not even know.
    A ton of consultants, to make sure the all the costume, envior ment are all correct, including consultant on time correct .mannerisms. The waling, the correct bow ect. (you are still allowed to be amused by their walking)

    • @max14719
      @max14719 3 місяці тому +1

      Yes. Every time I watched the show, I was always in awe. The story, the attention to its minor details, the costume, the complexity of each character, and the small subcontext such as the juxtaposition of cultures, the tit-for-tat love-hate relationship between John and Rodrigues, and many other things are perfectly placed without making it feel out of place. Every element was so perfect and beautifully crafted. So much so that once in a while, even after the show has ended, I'll pay it a revisit.
      Yes, some stories are fun with their twists and turns, and they're binge-worthy, alright. But Shōgun is just something else.

    Its obvious that Mariko IS the love interest. BUT this episode put Fuji very high up in the Waifu tier list.
    Also, being that she (Fuji)is the consort, Mariko cant have John just running his mouth and saying to the wrong people they slept together behind her back, thus the whole courtesan angle. Thankfully, John quickly picked up the subtext and did not ask further questions and just expressed that the “gift” was appreciated.

    I am Japanese. Some people seem to be making a fuss that there are no black people in SHOGUN. If there are people who are complaining, I think they should just write the story themselves, decide on the cast, and create an attractive work. Decades before this era, a black slave who served Nobunaga was named Yasuke and became a samurai. However, Nobunaga was assassinated and Yasuke was stripped of his samurai status and disappeared. Before him, there were no black people in Japan. And there are no samurai who have black blood. Also, at the time of this drama, there were no Americans coming to Japan, only Europeans. Also, there were no black aristocrats in Europe at the time.

He is a famous actor who has won numerous domestic and international awards, including the Japan Academy Award. Originally, he was classified as a cool, handsome actor who often played roles with a twisted and dark heart, and had many young female fans. • @Wasthere73
      @Wasthere73 3 місяці тому

      I don't know if that sounds accurate. 1 koku represented the amount of food (specifically rice) needed to feed 1 man for an entire year. So theoretically John actually has enough wealth from being a Hatamoto to support a small platoon of soldiers himself. I think the wage if converted would be a lot higher than that.
      EDIT: Found an online source that said 1 koku was worth 1 ryo (usually) which as a set weight of gold that translates roughly to $800 USD. Just rounding up quickly, 240 koku a year is almost $240k a year.

    This historical review of Japanese films is extremely accurate, even from a Japanese perspective.
    You can tell by looking at the hands of the Japanese soldiers marching.
    Everyone is holding hands, this is the traditional Japanese military practice.
    Other Japanese war movies have not done this thoroughly.
    I'm missing it.

    I'm not a fan of the forced romance that they've put. I knew and predicted from episode 1 that it would be the case but hope'd they didnt go this route.

      Well it was written in the book. And in the 80s mini series. And in real life. So it was always going to happen there’s nothing forced about the romance. John has literally spent 80% of his time on this show speaking with and spending his time with Mariko. She believes he needed to be rewarded for all he’s done but he wouldn’t sleep with Fuji and Fuji didn’t want to sleep with him, but Mariko did from the first moment she saw him.
