And let us not forget he is a master trained saxophonist that speaks multiple languages fluently. He played Carnegie Hall twice as a teenager. Once with the cello which he started playing at the age of 8 and once with his saxophone which he started playing at the age of 10. Wish we could see more of the sax playing. I hear that happens some on his Instagram, but have only heard him once with the sax on you tube with the Carnegie Hall video. As a young man he used his fluency in Mandarin to work in diplomacy at the Chinese American Embassy. Kevin is just way beyond us mere mortals!
If you were writing a novel about this a cappella band that comes out of nowhere and takes the world by storm, your editor would MAYBE let you get away with the incredible ranges they all have, but s/he would absolutely draw the line at Kevin. "Wait, a pre-med degree from Yale? Already accepted into Yale Medical School? Speaks five languages? Plays three instruments, well enough to have performed at Carnegie Hall twice? And you want to tell me he gave all that up to become a professional beatboxer?! No, you can't have someone that unbelievable in your book. You're going to have to tone it down." Truth is stranger than fiction. And the trio has an incredible amount of sheer luck when it comes to finding the right people when they need them.
@@bonnieflynn4798 From what I’ve learnt of PTX, I suspect luck has less to do with them finding the right people than them being particularly good at all aspects of their craft. This includes making the right decisions and knowing just what and who should come in. I credit Scott, in particular, with many of the astute decisions they have made.
@@LeskeyC001 Ben Bram is behind the group finding both Avi and Matt. He suggested Avi to Scott for the bass they needed and found Matt once Avi decided to leave. Sure Scott was the one who suggested Kirstie and Mitch try the sing off with him because they had a trio from high but he didn’t have anything to do with the basses and finding kevin was luck of his viral video.
Can you just imagine how PROUD Kevin's parents were. They were THERE and got to hear the whole crowd chanting. Kevin Kevin Kevin. Oh my Lord. They must have absolutely FLOATED out of there.
The chances of this group coming together was so infinitesimally small that only the powers that be in the universe could have made it happen. I’m glad they decided to do that to allow us mere mortals to have something to brighten our days. Three kids meet as children who love to sing and decide to keep singing together in school and local theater. As a side note, can you imagine trying to keep those three reigned in in high school choir? Scott, Mitch and Kirstie say that she did help them learn to blend better. They become life-long friends. Scott befriends Ben Bram who helps Scott get on The Sing Off. Ben introduces Scott to Avi. Scott talks Kevin into giving up med school at Yale and joining four strangers to compete on The Sing Off. They actually win the show. Sony drops them so they decide to start building their Pentaholic following on You Tube. Viral videos, and great music follows, and they get resigned to Sony. Avi decides to leave the group and they find another great bass in Matt. While Matt is not Avi, he is still excellent and I think he blends even better with the other members of PTX. If anything happens differently along that path Pentatonix does not exist, and the world is a lesser place.
1. Yes, that's Matt Sallee on the drums. 2. The professional dancers are Cost N Mayor. They were traveling with Pentatonix for their 2022 Christmas tour, and also appeared as the dancing video techs in the official video of "Kid on Christmas." I'm so glad you like this video; Kevin is just incredible. I would dearly love to have a long conversation with him someday; there are so many things I'd like to ask him.
One thing I love so much about PTX is the endless support they give each other. This performance was Scott's idea. He wanted Kevin to have a section to do anything he wanted, go as big as he wanted. They are all so amazing.
I don’t know how I missed this one. I’m so sad that you’re not around much anymore. I hope everything is ok with you and that life has just got too busy. 🤗💋🥰 I’ve been gone for awhile and you weren’t here. I miss you. I haven’t had a good laugh in awhile. You always make smile. I guess I’m just gonna have to go back and binge watch your PTX Journey…again.
I’ve never seen this specific video and I am never not amazed by his talent. Truly musically on a genius level with all that he can just come up with and combine together that if others tried would FAIL. KO deserves so much recognition for all he does (as they all do).
Paraphrasing the conversations: Kevin's father to Kevin: You shall go to medical school, my son. Kevin to God: Is this really the path you want me to travel? Scott to Kevin: Want to join some strangers to try out for a TV show? Kevin to Scott: Dude, I'm taking my finals to graduate from Yale. Kevin to himself: Wait, a minute . . . Kevin to God: Was that a sign? Kevin to Scott: Yes, I'm down. We have never heard any details about the conversation between Kevin and his parents other than they decided to support it only after they won the show. But Kevin has said that he prayed about all of this and is convinced that he is where God wants him to be. For those who don't know, the band does not perform from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. I had no idea that Seventh Day Adventists follow the same time frame as the Orthodox Jewish Sabbath but Kevin does not work during that time so there are no concerts scheduled then.
I've read that both of Kevin's parents are doctors. So the beatboxer thing probably hit hard. However, being his parents, they would also know how important music is to him. They did pay for his music lessons. Piano, cello and saxophone.
I've had the absolute honour of seeing this twice in person and WOW 🤯. I saw the debut of this piece at the Hollywood bowl on 9/29/22, and when I tell you that my jaw was on the floor the entire show I'm not even kidding!! The Hollywood bowl is a 17000 + outside arena and holy shit the electrifying intense energy in that place was something I will never forget as Long as I live. He actually had a cello orchestra live on stage with him and the dance moves and choreography seen in the video you just watched was inspired by the Hollywood bowl show. YOU SHOULD TOTALLY WATCH THAT. That performance went pretty viral. Everyone on site stood up for several minutes after witnessing greatness. I still get emotional thinking about it. 🥺♥️ Thanks for this amazing reaction and for the fond memories I have for that night 🙏🏾✌🏾

Every time I watch some of Kevin's works, I am completely mesmerized and just in awe! He is so freakin' talented and a blessing to all of us that get to hear him!
I don’t think he actually got the doctorate, because Pentatonix happened. But yes, he’s both talented and very hard working and has a brain the size of a planet. I recently saw an interesting interview with Kevin, which is maybe a bit long for a reaction video, but you might like it anyway. I have sadly forgotten the name of the podcast it was for, but the interviewer is an ex-athlete who is also of Nigerian descent. Kevin said his parents protected him from a lot of cruelty of the world, but he was taught as a black man he had to be twice as good as his white counterparts and he has only recently let himself also rest and his mornings are now dedicated to his family.
This live was absolutely INSANE!!! Not a single bottom in its seat! It was a party, to be sure! Loved watching your reaction, especially when he kicked on the electric guitar sound!
Kevin might be an advanced human from the future sent back to show us our potential. Or Kevin could be the DaVinci of our time. Kevin is such a true genius and a musical genius. He has so many talents in him I can't believe he hasn't self-combusted. Can play multiple instruments, sing, beatbox, write, compose, speaks multiple languages, perfect pitch, as if that wasn't enough, he was pre-med at Yale. He is also a humble and wonderful human. Maybe when he is done making music, he can become of Nobel Laureate after curing cancer and brokering world peace.
I wish he would try and explain how he keeps two different lines of music going in his head. I’m fairly sure his parents knew he was a musical genius, so really weren’t that surprised when he wanted to be a musician and not a doctor. He is amazing!
Kevin is simply a natural phenomenon. And I know they have “retired” but I have been saying for years now that I would *LOVE* to see a one time only collaboration with Kevin Olusola and 2Cellos…..just once…..

The part of the story that they don't tell is.
Kevin couldn't afford to fly out.
So, Scott's mom paid for half of the ticket.
The rest is HISTORY.
Also, Scott apparently told Kevin the production of Sing Off was paying for the ticket instead of Scott/Scott's mum.
