Andre Matos was a brazilian singer, pianist, maestro and composer, he was part of the band Viper when he was a teenager (Viper very successful in Japan in the early 1990s), then Angra and then Shaman.
Definitely the best voice in Brazilian metal, he was amazing... unfortnelly he passed away in 2019 due to a heart attack, Andre will be missed forever!

I don't know this guy that well, but listening to this song, in a live performance, it's clear to me that he was a legend. Too bad he's not so famous worldwide, he deserved it.
To be fair he was quite famous amongst metalheads, in a bunch of European countries, in Japan and in South America specially Brazil. It is a bit like Nightwish, where the band is massive on the metal scene but is not known by "normal" ppl.

Angra was HUGE in any places where power/melodic metal has a strong scene, like in Japan, Germany, etc...and of course in Brazil
@@victorlongon Yes I understand. I'm more of a blues/rock n roll/country/folk guy and a little bit of gospel from the 50's to 70's (some 80's stuff) not to mention classical music. In this case, I'm not really into metal (except Black Sabbath) but I know how to recognize a band when it's good. In this case, for those who are not used to metal, I only know the mainstream, Metallica, Megadeth...from what I noticed in this singer's style, I only know Iron Maiden in the genre.. But he should be known to everyone(like Bruce Dickinson), not just metalheads. That's what I meant in the comment. May he rest in peace and may he be with God.

- Took part in an audition to replace Bruce Dickinson in Iron Maiden and finished in 3rd place;

I'm a huge fan of Andre since I was 15, now I'm 36, and every time I listen to this song I get emotional , this song always reminds me The Legend a fantasy movie from the 80' with Tom Cruise.
I've watched this performance dozens of times, and it brings tears to my eyes and a knot in my throat EVERY time still. Andre Matos should be deified up there with the absolute best of the best. Not being able to see him live is one of the greatest sorrows of my heart

I was able to see him with Shaman when this album was released in my country Paraguay, it was an almost like an opera/theater and metal show, it was beautiful, and then when he released his solo album, 2 masterpieces of the Brazilian metal music, love to our Brazilian brothers, Andre Matos was and will be a Legend.

One of my biggest regrets in life was not seeing him perform live. He came to a city four hours from mine and I couldn't go. Never had the chance again. The man was incredibly creative and mixing Brazilian folk music on Angra and later a more Central American folk on Shaman created something new on a very saturated market, it's a shame he wasn't able to write more. Yeah, Angra continued with a similar style and so did Shaman, but the bands will never feel the same. He was the soul, if you will, it was his creativity and his virtuosity that made his music what it was, unique, fresh and beautiful.
I was fortunate enough to watch him in my city, Campina Grande - PB in 2005 (December if i remember correctly) with Shaman (The band Torture Squad was there too). It was amazing and it was Hugo Mariutti's birthday as well. All the band members messed his hair with cake on stage. It was a one in a life time experience!
I saw Matos alone 1 time, Matos with Angra 1 time and with Shaman 1 time. Superb
I was so close to missing him. He wasn't coming to stage for more than an hour. Apparently he had a terrible flu that day, but he still came out and killed it.
I went to André Matos' band concert in 2014, at SESC in São José do Rio Preto/SP. Since that day still being one of my most wonderful memories.

These lines embody greatly the resolution of André's short and yet meaningful life, as he had a glance into his future when he wrote them to the audience, his lady, who would and will forever celebrate his virtuosity creating countless sparks inside our hearts all over the world, where he will always be... "and thus he's never died." Just like a fairy tale.
I'm sure I speak for everyone of his admirers, current and forthcoming, when I say this:

I'm so sorry to hear he passed. I had no idea. I used to communicate with some of the members of Shaman years ago hoping they would come to the US to tour. They were very cool bunch and and just thrilled to know their music was reaching the US. Incredible band that should have reached world wide acclaim!

Andre Matos is one of my musical heroes. The music he composed for Angra is incredible. Wrote all of their first album, the lyrics, sang, played piano, arranged everything. Guy was a world-class talent and musical genius.

He was graduated as a conductor, that's why he seems like conducting the audience haha He also said he thought being a pianist would be his career, so he started with classical piano, just like you said you did too :) It was also cute that you mentioned Freddie at a point since his favorite band was Queen. André was such a charismatic guy, he had a huge connection with the audience and was very famous in Japan and Brazil, he also could reach very very high notes, much more than he did in this song! É realmente uma grande pena que o Andre tenha falecido num certo "esquecimento" porque foi certamente um dos maiores, senão o maior, vocalista e músico de metal brasileiro. Eu o vi uma vez com o Avantasia em 2008, em show solo na minha cidade em 2009 e de novo com o Shaman e Avantasia em 2019, 6 dias antes de ele falecer. Todos foram momentos incríveis que vou guardar para sempre. André Matos foi certamente um dos maiores cantores do rock mundial.
Sou tão velho q vi o Angra na turnê do Angels cry 😂. Além da técnica que todo mundo fala, ele tinha uma presença de palco incrível.

Conheci essa música quando criança, através da novela "O Beijo do Vampiro" e era incrível pra mim toda vez que tocava. Com o tempo consegui um DVD com várias bandas, que tinha o clipe dessa música e ela se tornou a minha música preferida no mundo por muitos e muitos anos. E eu não fazia ideia de que era de uma banda BRASILEIRA! Quando descobri eu quase nem acreditei e me senti incrivelmente orgulhoso em saber que essa composição lendária e épica era brasileira.
No primeiro capítulo tocou a "musica de Bóris" e dai foi p o resto da vida!

I love this music, great pece of art. The melody, the instruments used, the elements composing the lyric, all of this leads who's listenining to the middle ages, into a kind of epic chivalry romance. And, of course, the interpretation of André is in harmony with the song. He was brillant!

She's sooo expressive! Loved to see her giggling with excitment at a great performer. Love to see people enjoying what`s good in life. She`s got these great headphones, and it`s almost as if a blind person, who had their hearing become oversensitive over time, was hearing great music for the first time. It was awesome to see the excitment on her face. This is what music is all about.

When you say he was conducting from the piano, you are right, he was a classic trained maestro, before he formed his first metal band during his teens he had a passion for the piano that never died. For more of this mixture of Brazilian music metal and classic I recommend you to look into Angra's Holy Land album.
Regarding his joy of life, you got that one well too, he loved the piano and his accomplishments, once on an interview he said that would he die on that day he would die satisfied with what he did in life. He was a great musician and a great man, humble, fought for animal rights, treating people well, did spread his love for music and the piano.

He was an incredible singer indeed. His highs are legendary, like on the Angra classic "Carry On" (and as many mentioned, that "Wuthering Heights" cover) but the entire Holy Land album from Angra is a masterpiece with beautiful songs like "Deep Blue" and the epic "Carolina IV".

André Matos was the first vocalist I saw on stage and he is the vocalist I saw the most live... I saw him many times with Angra, Shaman and solo band... one of the best vocalists of all time... rest in peace ...
