Tetris (Russian: Тетрис, pronounced [ˈtɛtrʲɪs]) is a tile-matching puzzle video game originally designed and programmed by Alexey Pajitnov in the Soviet Union. It was released on June 6, 1984,[2] while he was working for the Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Science of the USSR in Moscow.[3] He derived its name from the Greek numerical prefix tetra- (all of the game's pieces contain four segments) and tennis, Pajitnov's favorite sport.[4][5]
It is also the first entertainment software to be exported from the USSR to the US and published by Spectrum HoloByte for Commodore 64 and IBM PC. The Tetris game is a popular use of tetrominoes, the four-element special case of polyominoes. Polyominoes have been used in popular puzzles since at least 1907, and the name was given by the mathematician Solomon W. Golomb in 1953. However, even the enumeration of pentominoes is dated to antiquity.
The game (or one of its many variants) is available for nearly every video game console and computer operating system, as well as on devices such as graphing calculators, mobile phones, portable media players, PDAs, Network music players and even as an Easter egg on non-media products like oscilloscopes.[6] It has even inspired Tetris serving dishes[7] and been played on the sides of various buildings.
While versions of Tetris were sold for a range of 1980s home computer platforms as well as the arcades, it was the hugely successful handheld version for the Game Boy launched in 1989 that established the game as one of the most popular ever. Electronic Gaming Monthly's 100th issue had Tetris in first place as "Greatest Game of All Time". In 2007, Tetris came in second place in IGN's "100 Greatest Video Games of All Time".[8] It has sold more than 70 million copies.[9] In January 2010, it was announced that Tetris has sold more than 100 million copies for cell phones alone since 2005.[10]
After 6 re-edits because of UA-cams BS copyright garbage. And 3 months off & on work.. .It is done ! Enjoy !! Now I'm gonna go take an aspirin !

Thanks Guys ! :) I'm really glad That You are enjoying these videos. Still got a mountain of projects left to complete. 0_o #InOverMyHead
Wow! 1h Tetris! Thanks for this awesome video! Tetris is a legend! And there are so many fantastic versions out there.
WHOA!
You finally decided to do my request. :D You have no idea how happy I am right now! :)
Thanks, thanks, thanks and an infinite lot of more thanks! :D
3 month project my friend. I calculated the ones I could find & divided them by 1min 30 seconds. The final video would have been 4 hours & 15+ minutes long. And I couldn't attain all the footage so I had to narrow it down to 44 ports. This project was a bigger pain than Bomberman. 0_o. But I'm glad You are enjoying it. lol
Imagine if somebody made a video with every single port. That would be so awesome, but at the same time, way too long. It would be better to just release it on DVD.
the music of the bootleg arcade version is awesome!
I really needed someone to whisper in my ear "Tetrisss.."
Asmr style. Glad to know they had that covered
I remember buying the DS just for Tetris. It's insane how much i love the DS version of tetris!
Wish there was a way for it to still speed up after level 20 in endless
🥺
I remember buying it in a Scottish game store... I still enjoy it but it feels kinda outdated when it is compared to the other games.
While I love the Wii version and the old mobile games of Tetris and Tetris Blitz.
But the Wii one is fine as it is, graphics don't really matter and the 2010s aesthetics are relaxing (for example the relaxing music and cool wallpapers like the one where you seem to fly)
Plus the power-ups and various play-styles INCLUDING THE WII BALANCE BOARD!!!
They had no reason to cook this hard, but they did anyways and also released a plus version on disk.
Honesty the WiiWare one is already more than enough for me.
Best Graphics: DS
Best Music: C64
Best Overall: Gameboy
It's Tetris all you really needed to show was the one line on each version really then each footage would last about a 30 seconds or a bit more which means more versions in same amount of time.
This one is very good though.
The SEGA arcade has a 16-Bit version with FM music and pictures of stuff in the boarders a vast improvement over the 8-Bit arcade version you shown here my favorate SEGA version for sure.
GREAT! i always loved the original arcade version and it shows how awesome it still is today. good russian music, 2p simultaneous play, and nicely shaded shapes (graphics) with good animation (when lines are created in a tetris, they disappear one at a time which is nice)
Omg Tetris! One of my favorite games besides the old classic game of (Centipede) thanks so much and for taking the time to do these requests :)
At 4:47, the bootleg arcade tetris has music ripped from Konami's MSX2 game, "The Treasure Of Usas".
Also there was a very nice MSX2 version by BPS using "screen 7" (512x224)
Lines are so smooth on the Colecovision.
music for c-64 version is legendary...and far, the better!!!!!!!!!!
The GB Color version is pretty awesome too, because of 4 lines mode
Wow, the musician for the Coleco Vision port really earned his money....
I won the appeal !! And best of all .. INGrooves didn't make a cent off this video.
Never mind it's there
What's wrong with Megaman X?
Binary Code I'm not sure there are there are more than a few versions of super Mario Bros.
Gaming History Source It must've been a troll because Nintendo owns and has the rights to Tetris
where's the brick game? i have the brick game E-9999 in 1 and why there's no? tell me plz
That sad moment when your version of Tetris looked worse than the Fairchild Channel F (AKA, a system with older & more limited hardware than the Atari 2600)
Mr. Atari 2600 What was your version?
ahh nice one! Love the TENGEN NES port myself (you can see it at 42 minutes in ..it looks a hell of a lot better than the 'official' BPS version preceding it!
great video:)
I was screaming internaly when I saw that you don't use hard drop or hold in modern tetrises x)
Nice video, I appreciate the fact that you putted your time, efforts and heart into this project!
He's trying to play it old school
I don't see the point of including all the homebrews and fanmade games. It'd be best if you just stuck with the official, chronological games
Do you want to be exposed to a Freeze Cracker, SlashMan.EXE, you Wolverine knockoff?
As long as the gameplay is the same, I'd say it counts
Add a drum machine track to the Colecovision music and you got yourself a modern mainstream hiphop song
If you didn't know, the Bootleg Arcade's ingame music is one of the temple's theme in Tresure of Usas for the MSX. Also, I think the San Coupé version of Tetris' ingame music is the Sam Coupé rendition of the main theme of the game Nemesis: the Warlock.
Oh yeah, and the Bootleg Arcade's version of that temple in Treasure of Usas is at a different key than the game
troika is one of my favorite classic games themes so any version with it can be played for many-many hours
I love the sound effect of the tile when moved sideways in the NEC PC 8801 version. It's like the blocks have feet running lol.
Wow! Very nice! I finally see the Mirrorsoft versions. Did Mirrorsoft specifically ever port their version to a console, or did they remain the domain of computers? IIRC Mirrorsoft was heavily involved in the initial legal dispute from the 1980s. I really like that ambient soundtrack in Tetris Zone featured in this near the end. It sounds so post-modern compared to the earliest versions, though I do really like them too.
Mirrorsoft didn't port to any consoles because Nintendo locked up the console rights
If I'm only going to have one version, it's GameBoy.
+stufaman been playing tetris since the nes version, to this day I really have to ask, what is the nostalgia appeal about this version? I mean I understand for a lot of us, it was one of the first, but I alway got annoyed at the stiff controls that make it virtually unplayable in higher levels and if can manage it you are inviting carpal tunnel and hand problems. I know people like Korobeiniki (which is more funny that wasn't even in the initial version of gb tetris). I can't even say its the best version on the game boy tetris dx greatly improved the controls and it looked phenomenal on the game boy color. Tetris plus also went far to improve control, I just wish I could understand the love (even though it did start my obsession) I mean I can understand why its important to people, but why anyone would want to be stuck to that version when there are much better flushed out versions.
David Brailsford You've pretty much answered your own question.
It's like saying to the millions of fans who bought Street Fighter 2 on the SNES, 3DO version is much better. But SF2 on the Snes sold like hotcakes far earlier. 3DO version didn't.
Tetris put Gameboy on the map, Gameboy put Tetris on the map. They were the perfect marriage. Many players didn't feel the need to get another gameboy game over Tetris.
It is nostalgia, but the games just 'feels' more fun to play over say the Saturn version or even much improved DX version.
+stufaman I'm still impressed how easy those distinguishing patterns are on the eyes.
It's a shame it got yanked from the 3DS store (due to whatever silly licensing shenanigans). I wouldn't have minded getting a chance to play this version again...
Bunnellius A while ago it was easy to find a Gameboy with a copy. I'm not sure about nowadays though.
I wonder if it's down to Russia being a pr*ck?
The poor guy who made Tetris didn't get much money from it.
stufaman
Probably a bit too much expense and effort to me for just the one game.
I'd have to really get into a Gameboy collecting mindset to do it, and I have too many competing expenditures at the moment to do so.
5-8 bucks on the e-shop would have been perfect however. :(
must have been a lot of work! great video as always, wingnut! :D
much appreciated ! :)
I REALLY like the music from the bootleg arcade version.
its stolen from an msx game called treasure of usas, and yeah its probably my favourite music in this whole video ha
That arcade bootleg scares me a bit. :x
And I like the colorful homebrew for Atari 2600.
I like how you put in the description "3. Tetris Arcade (Bootleg)...".
OG Gambeboy is still the best and best tunes by a country mile
I grew up with the SNES version. The mixed match with Tetris and Dr. Mario combined is still the best.
Also, good video =) I've had Tetris long as I can remember. We first got a version with the Windows Entertainment Pack, which I remember playing the earliest, then the Gameboy version. Good times! =)
This puzzle game was originally made for the Electronika 60, which is missing in this video. Another version missing is the Phillips CD-i version.
It's not Always easy to get all the footage for these videos. I made a LOT of attempts to get the footage but couldn't. :(
I think the original is very important for these comparisons.
@Peck Man Yes. I think there is till footage of it though. Or is it against policy to use video footage taken by other people? There is one that's meant to look like the original included in one of the newer Tetris games for the PS2 I think but that isn't actually the original and has quite a few differences.
Tetris Plus was also in the arcades and on the Game Boy.
Anyone remember tetris for roku? it was a cool tetris version that you played on roku, sadly it's no longer downloadable so only people who had it before can still play it
21:34 That's the same intro music at the start of each level for Crystal Castles (Atari, 1983)
I always preferred the Infogrames version for the Amiga.
Seeing clips of the original 1987 Tengen arcade version (which I have played numerous times) makes me realize more and more how lackluster the NES and Game Boy versions are. Those versions don’t even give the creators a reason to call the game Tetris.
I can't help but do the Russian whenever hearing the Tetris theme.
As always, love these video.
There's a version of Troika on the MSX2 version, BPS. This also appeared on an old Yamaha PSR of mine. Does anyone know who wrote/composed the song? Is it folk music? I really want to know because this tune has stuck with me forever. Anyone have any info? Thanks =)
I like the MSX 2 Disney Tetris. That's pretty cool.
I'm stunned that some asshat tried to pull a false copyright claim for the NES Tetris part of the video, given they're (IIRC) the same 3 classical Russian compositions used for the Game Boy version! (Based on the other entries in this video, they had the best soundtrack by far, too!)
Side note for future videos: the Apple IIgs didn't use the older 'apple ][' badge/logo - it had "Apple IIGS" in a serif (I think Times Garamond) font instead.
The MSX2 Disney version appeared in a demo disk called Club Guide Picture Disk. There are other good Tetris versions on MSX, like FaTetris or Kralizec Tetris.
That bootleg arcade version has a really good music.
Mr. Grongy The bootleg arcade has the best music.
from msx usas
Y
I didn't even realize this game was in the arcades! Makes sense.
Tetris Advance is the best version of all. Great music and background stuff.
I like ps1 Next Tetris but only on classic Tetris mode.
After the game loads it let's you put in a music disc of your own.
My fav thing about it though is how it gives you an extra few seconds to adjust your block even after it touches the ground. This allows you to change your mind and correct, making the game last a bit longer.
It's also on Dreamcast btw but looks completely different.
"Not included in this video"
A timeless classic
Tetris Zone sounds peaceful, but the Tetris for Game Boy is very iconic.
Grew up with a bootleg of the NES version, one of those plug n play games. Those were the days.
The music in the Sam Coupe version is actually from a C64 game called Nemesis the Warlock.
My personal favorite has to be The New Tetris (N64), especially because the music kicks @$$!
This game appears to be rather simple; I wonder if it features much replay value.
If the unofficial versions were removed, I bet the N64 version (The New Tetris) could fit in there
Tetris DS, Gameboy, and Tetris Effect = the three best versions of Tetris IMO
One version that should have been included was the Sega Master System's "Super Tetris" which was an unlicensed port made in Korea I believe.
My absolute favorite Tetris was The New Tetris on N64. A very important one to not be included here!
I like these text lines.
TETЯIS
NEXT ЯONUD
Only Russians can understand me.
Oh my god, nothing has more ports than Tetris. You've got gumption.
I had so much fun playing Tetris by Making four lines
The Gameboy iteration may be the most famous but my favorites are the NES (nintendo), DX and Tetris Zone versions.
The gameboy color version is the best in my opinion because of the four lines mode option
Here is the Original edit if You are interested in seeing it. I had to cut it down a but to get it under an hour. But, at least you'll get to see what I was going for. Enjoy !
www.dailymotion.com/video/x17e4vs_let-s-compare-tetris-short-version
It still says it is in work. :D
Highretrogamelord89
That's strange ! I think it works now.
Okay why the heck wasn't system 16 sega tetris picked instead of the E system version? that's the definitive sega teris version.
I'd love to see a super long version with EVERY version of tetris
And them maxing out the score
lol
my favourite version has always been the 80's Atari Arcade version with the Russian like music, it had actual levels and not just a speed increase
My favorite one is the Sega Genesis version because is the one I most played as a kid.
Iconic.
how does the fujistu FM-7 handle tetris so well unlike the others O:
i've known this comparison video and skimmed parts of it for years and i never realized until now that the intellevision homebrew has nutcracker music in it. xD
then again i really shouldn't be surprised seeing tetris has russian influence in its history.
6:28 - 11:20 A moment of silence about those Tetris versions...
+Gaming History Source ||| That's a LOT of systems! How long did this take to compile from start to finish?
As always... thanks for the awesome uploads mate.
+Stappit Fu It took a little over 3 months off & on to complete. I attempted to get more but in some cases it couldn't be done.
WOW what a star :) Hats off to your dedication sir!
Hope you have a great Xmas and New Year - and once again... Thanks.
+Stappit Fu Thank you ! :D & you have a merry Christmas as well & may you & yours be gifted with many more blessings to come ! :)
+Gaming History Source if you will make a part 2 of this you can put the TGM series
About the second ZX spectrum game, wrote in russian (as much as I know)
Instruction is not written
Press any key
Copyright V. A. Balyasov, 1986
43:43 That TGM line clear animations
That's the version you chose for the Amiga? Why didn't you show off the Infogrames version? It's much better.
I know there are a ton, but you should have included The New Tetris for N64. One of the best.
What about Disney's magical Tetris challenge? it counts as a Tetris game.
Thanks for the video.
idk why but the sam coupé background scares me a lot
Woah, one hour, I'll really need to finish this video.
The Amstrad version has some charm.
Also, WHAT is up with the background in the Amiga version?
20:25 that composer puts Hans Zimmer to shame.
sarysa this is not epic music
Yeah....for TONEDEAFNESS
The Tetris Worlds for xbox made me think of the monolith from 2001. lol
Forgot the Famicom and Soviet DVK-2 versions.
Didn't forget the soviet stuff. There was no viable emulation for it. There are a ton that I didn't include. It would be impossible for me to gather it all up. Like I stated before. This video could have been 4 hours long ... easy !
My favorite ones are Aracde Tengen and Bootleg, Atari 2600 Cubis, Amiga, Oric, original Gameboy, MSX2 Disney, FM-7, X68000 Sega, Mega Drive, NES Tengen, 2nd Spectrum, 1st Amstrad, Saturn, PSP, Mac and of course Intellivision :)
There are also more versions of Tetris for the PC, as well as for, of all things, Roku and Comcast Xfinity, Gaming History Source.
For a bootleg, it sounds like something you'd find on the Master System.
Great video! For me, the best version is "The new Tetris".
The Nintendo 64 version include some new features and is great!
Whatever that bootlegged version is in the first 5 minutes… BEST SOUNDTRACK BY FAR
What do we want?!? A FOUR-HOUR TETRIS VIDEO!!!
When do we want it?!? IN 2 HOURS 56 MINUTES AND 47 SECONDS!!!
Tetris 1988 courtesy of Atari Games (Video Game)
Sorry but think there's another version of Tetris for Sam coupe...
AMAZING
Does anyone have more videos about The Sega one for X68000 (not the System 16 arcade one)? I actually wondering about the "Battle Play" mode... if you know then show it to me...
Best: Gameboy
Worst: Sam Coupé
Why it worst?? Oh its because of the female face... theres a button to remove that
Tetris Plus is my favorite out of all the tetris games. I have the ps1 version.
25 years later, I still can't figure out why there was never a proper Atari ST version.
It was the same as the Amiga. But I couldn't get it to work.
Gaming History Source You mean there is one for the ST? I never found one, at least official.
Sometimes, when you feel the need to compare different versions of Tetris, you just need to ask yourself a simple question.
Is the game Tetris?
If the answer is yes, it's awesome and fun, no matter what
The striped background in the first Amstrad release makes it very hard to see the pieces! Anyone know if it can be turned off?
The Тetris is an emperor of video games!
