Some microphone cables tie the signal return and shield drain wire differently than the twisted pair return within a DMX cable. This may introduce a potential grounding problem in your system. Grounding problems can fry electronics. Our example is extreme but meant to highlight the potential problems when using a microphone cable. Proper installations will keep your equipment running at their best performance.
We wouldn't recommend using microphone cables for your lighting fixtures. The microphone cable is designed for audio frequencies (low frequencies) and is a low impedance, high capacitance cable. DMX data cable is designed for a wide bandwidth high frequency data stream, it is a higher impedance and low capacitance cable.
hey! quick question! If you connect a light set up on a building and you program the par cans and all the lights do the dmx addresses get reseted if the power in the building goes off??
Ok so you CAN string completely different types of fixtures to a single controller? So I could run a laser into a par can into a flower pattern into a fog machine? Because NOBODY ever brings this up.
Man in 2 days I have learned soooo much thanks to you and LearnLizard. Now I just feel silly for asking my initial question. I feel way more confident about DMX controlling. THANK YOU!
This is the first time I have ever heard of mic cables having the potential to fry a chip. Just that they can be more prone to interference.

Very helpful, tot forgot about the term plug, glad I decide to refresh myself.
awesome! thanks for the info! Great video by the way!!
nice handy video ;-) cheers
Device ID is set with dip switches which is a non-powered, manual, analog, operation.
wish there was a turorial using live lights and dmx controllers
YOU ARE THE BEST

Hey Chris, I am going to have 18 lights setup in a daisy chain. Will the signal degrade or do I need a DMX splitter?
I have to use a terminator in the DMX splitter or only at the end of the chain?
am I gonna need dmx terminator if I am using master/slave sound active?
is there any way to visually divide xlr and dmx, i never guessed it right anytime...
pfff i used mic kables for a long time the only difrens is omage and mic cables are way cheaper

what cable do we need for par led, so accually we cant use mic cables like canary for lights ?
