My Winter Succulent Garden After Being Gone for 2.5 Weeks

  • Greg, Alex, Hannah and I have been gone up in Norther California since December 19th. Our coworker and Hannah’s friend, Nate stayed at our house and watched Bentley. (Thank you, Nate!) I didn’t have him do anything to the garden while I was gone because San Diego has LOTS of rain. The temperature at night have also been getting as low as 36 degrees Fahrenheit. Succulents stress in extreme drought and cold temperatures. The stress has brought out the most spectacular colors. Other than a few milkweeds, I came home to a beautiful garden. Succulents are so resilient! Happy New Year! Make sure to check out my website, www.designforserenity.com to see previous projects or book a virtual consultation with me! Happy gardening!

That was my father's greatest dream! To have a ranch by lake Shasta with white face cows. He wasn't able my mom wouldn't move from Hawthorne CA to the north she hated the cold. As a child I so wanted to go to the northern country, I never did. I'm stuck in the desert right now but when you said this all my feelings came rushing in. Made me cry. I'm not to old to go but if I don't do it soon I may never. I'm so broken up about my plants dying in this low desert town. I'm dying here I feel I need a fresh start too.
I love you you're the best and you've taught me so much about succulents and life! Thank you from my ❤️.

That's what I loved about living in Southern California... if you want snow and cold weather, you can drive to it and enjoy it, then leave it behind and go back to warm weather. It's funny: you can enjoy the snow in the morning, then drive to go enjoy the sand and the ocean in the afternoon.

Being in the Midwest, a white holiday is so much anticipated. It’s not very often we get one. Lucky you had a white holiday and such a magical feeling.
I enjoy your succulent tips of the day even though my succulents are being overwintered under grow lights until about June.
Being a similar OCD garden professional such as you, it kind of drives me a bit crazy that you don’t take a bucket along with you to toss the spent plant leaves. Also, your garden hose seems to be a trip hazard. I replaced our hoses with stainless steel hoses for areas less then 50 feet and retractable hoses for longer areas (I garden on over an acre). Stainless steel hoses were a life changer. Easy and light weight to pull and then recoil. Check them out

I’ve always wondered where your “northern California” ranch was and today it was revealed! I live in Redding and I’m always having to move my outdoor pots around my house depending on the time of the year. I don’t think a succulent garden staying in one place up would make it here. 30-118 degrees!

That is all very beautiful but about 80% of the USA and much of Europe has very cold weather during the winter months. We have to grow our plants inside much of the year. Some times I wonder if it is even worth it to put them outside during the warmer months because they get so upset when I have to bring them inside when the temperatures start to dip.
Our succulents will never come near the size of Laura Eubanks’ plants try as they may.

I notice the ripple jade isn't blooming but the silver dollar is. I have the same situation, plants side-by-side, but ripple does not like to bloom. Silver dollar is spectacular while blooming but looks bad when flowers die as they don't fall off. Bees love it.

Hi Laura, at the beginning of the video (~1:54) approximately in the bottom middle of the frame of the video, I see a ripple jade plant. Am I correct? If it is, it looks beautiful and big! If it is a ripple jade plant, how long have you had it for?

Stunning as per usual but hey quick question Laura !!
You said that when ur alluodii procera ( idk if that’s how it’s spelled 🤷🏻‍♀️) starts to lose its leaves that means it’s going dormant , correct ? Then u said NOT TO WATER IT right…
Sooooo how about when it rains ??? I live right here in Simi Valley (an exit away from Thousand Oaks !)
Anyways I’d highly appreciate a response whenever u have time to do so thank so so much!
    I love ur life !!!
    With lots of ❤️

@@LauraEubanks I'm not exactly sure. I live in south Asia. I'm close to the desert so we've got a semi arid climate. Winters aren't that harsh. The lowest it gets is -8C° but only on some nights. On average from Dec to Feb, it's like 2C° from 12am to 8am.

If you go with attenuata, just be prepared to throw some bed sheets or frost cloth over them if temps are predicted to drop below freezing for any length of time.
