    Just a quick rules clarification because I didn't see anyone else mention it in the comments - when you kick the ball to your own player, the receiver has to start behind you and run forward to catch the ball. If they're in front of you when you make the kick it will be offside.

  • @afpwebworks
    @afpwebworks 3 роки тому +2

    Another big difference from American sports is there aren't all the timeouts. When play stops for a penalty or something, the coach has to stay out on the sidelnes and play restarts. There are limited substitutions during the game. I am not sure but i think it's 7 subs only. You dont have an offence team and a defence team. Everyone plays all of it. The numbers on hte players' backs indicate what position on the field they play but where they stand and run to or from is a lot looser than other games. Not dictated by the rules in any significant way.

      You can pass the ball from the ground whether you are held or not.
      If you are held while on the ground then you have to release the ball, whatever you plan to do. Most times an opposing player will come in and try to grab the ball, so your best bet is to place it behind you so that your teammates can come in over the ball and stop them (and in the process form a 'ruck'). If nobody from the other team tries this, then you can place the ball on the ground, lift yourself up and pick the ball back up - even if the tackler is still holding you the entire time. Most tacklers are so good now that they'll tackle you, release you, then come over from their side and go for the ball - so you rarely see players even having the opportunity to release then get up and regather the ball.
      If you hit the ground but aren't held, then you can lift yourself back up without having to even release the ball.
      If a player is tackled but is held up (i.e. no part of their body from their knee up hits the ground) for long enough, then a 'maul' is formed where pretty much both teams want to drive the cluster of bodies towards the opposition's goal line, or the defending team might try to drive them into touch (over the boundary line) so they'll get a throw in. Also if a maul collapses legally (e..g. no cheeky bugger goes in low to take out people's legs) and the attacking team is unable to get the ball out of it (because no players have to roll out of the way like they do in rucks) then the defending team gets a scrum.

    One of the things rarely mentioned regarding rugby (either code) is the spirit in which it is played. Some bloke on the other team will cheerfully take your head off during the match but will buy you a pint afterwards.
    And then there's the spectators. No fighting, rioting, invading the pitch etc like in football (soccer). Women and children in the crowd too - a 'party' atmosphere, especially at the really big games.
    A truly great game to play and watch.

    1. The scrum is a way to restart the game, re-introduce the ball on the field, after it's been stopped by the ref.
    2. The ball carrier, after being takled, MUST let go the ball (backwards of course) immediately, on the ground. (If he can't stand up and run again of course, because it's allowed)
    It's the law.
    in addition he must do it a way his partners will pick it up as fast and secured as possible.
    The defenders, basicaly must try to steal it from his hands.
    Action doesn't stop. Unless a foul is done. (over agressive behavior for ex)
    That's why a ruck looks a bit messy and agressive.
    Everybody respects the ref for a reason, even the crowd, because without him, all those type of actions would be impossible to organize. You can't basicaly play rugby with your friends in the streets because of this, in opposite of basketball soccer or football.
    Tough love from France. One more sub cause you do it right.

    When a player kicks the ball, you may not touch the ball if you were in front of him when the kick was made, so when you see those players run up and catch the ball and then score a try, they have to have started behind the kicker and then overtaken him for the score to be legal.

    There are no blockers in both versions of rugby so breaking thru the defensive line rushing up means the passing plays and skills needed are very close to basketball, lots of screen plays, misdirections, crossovers, feigns, no look passes, anything to draw your opponent out of position and to get your team mate to hit the lane down the middle. Union and league also rely on turnover ball to set off upfield asap. Cool reaction bud

      SlotFlo exactly, rugby league , not shown here is more a cross between rugby and nfl, they dont have rucks or scraps for the ball at the tackle, the play is reset when momentum stops , the pause between plays is literally 3 sec, while the defence realign 10 yards back so its speed option every time. each team gets six plays in possession to score. Awesome game, NRL look it up.

      @KurtyFloLive  4 роки тому

      Doc Gonzales cool I read that league had a few differences and I haven’t gotten a chance to check that side out yet but I definitely will! Is there “stoppage time” in either league or union or does the clock stop in league? Thanks for all your help.

    • @docgonzales
      @docgonzales 4 роки тому +3

      SlotFlo there is stoppage time in both, called by the ref, but only when there are injuries to be treated on the field or to review a contentious play, either illegal tackling above the shoulders or shoulder blocks , or whether the scoring of a try is up in the air due to blocking or offside chasing a kick , ( chasers have to be behind the kicker) or if ball has touched down, crossing the line is not enough , defence can hold the ball up over the line and it wont count. 40 min each way, probs 5 min stoppage total in that time frame

    A conversion *can* be defended but the defending team must be behind the goal line when the kick is taken and since the conversion point is 20m out from goal, in line from where the try was completed, the kick must be a poor attempt for the defence to even come close to blocking. So if the try scorer crosses the line out of the far left of the field, the converter takes his conversion 20m out from that point; similarly if the try scorer crosses the line just between the posts, so too shall the conversion take place, 20m out from that point. If the ball falls before the kicker begins his run-up, the ball can be replaced. If the ball falls after the kicker begins his run-up, the defence can charge him. In that event, the kicker can kick from where the ball lays or pick it up and attempt a drop goal.

    It's not a lateral, it's a pass. Anyone can score. The numbers 1 to 8 are known as forwards or the pack. 9 to 15 are the backs or three quarters. It's a game for all sizes and shapes of human. 1, 2 and 3 (the front row in the scrum) are very heavy set, generally around 6 feet tall and up to 300 pounds. 4 and 5 are the second row in the scrum, tall and well built (irishman devin toner is nearly 7 feet tall). 6, 7 and 8 are the back row, big and mobile they compete for opponent's ball when play breaks down at the ruck. 9 is the scrum half, small (south african faf de klerk is about 5 foot 7) agile playmaker. 10 is fly half, another playmaker and specialist kicker. 11 and 14 are the left and rightvwings. Fast and nimble they can also be monstrous big (check out jonah lomu, all black, total legend, rip). 12 and 13 are inside and outside centers, good ball handlers and runners, they have to be solid tacklers in defence. 15 is full back. Needs to be good all rounder, solid tackler, good runner and kicker and absolutely fearless.

    Le Bron would get his pansy ass handed to him in Rugby. No pads, no softies playing here.
    The team to beat is was and will almost always be the All Blacks, there's always a pair of hands to grab the ball if it's passed in any direction. In my home country South Africa we have the Springbok team and although we are amongst the top 3 rugby nations we always fear the All Blacks.

    • @KurtyFloLive

    • @archgerbil3276
      @archgerbil3276 3 роки тому

      @@KurtyFloLive LeBron would have to learn a whole new set of skills, which I definitely think he could easily do. The challenge would come in the mindset. From watching both sports, you can't actually compare them except from the basics and the flow of the games aren't even in the same hemisphere. However, he has talent, speed, drive and physicality so I think that once he gets settled in he would be a fantastic rugby player if he went into the sport.
      What I mean is that NFL goes play by play. Each play is a planned, practiced and honed move to achieve a specific objective. I like to compare it to the strategic aspect of warfare. While rugby definitely has practiced moves, the focus is more on individual and team techniques as well as adaptation to developing situations due to the more open nature of the game. In the warfare comparison, I compare rugby to the tactical aspect.

    You’d think women would be more technically sound. But I’ve seen a lot of shocking passes the break the speed momentum of receiving players, contact with the body not at the center of gravity to drive forward and breaks that don’t result in tries. It ticks me off and I want to support the women’s version of the sport. Maybe in time when women are more established in the sport and are drawn to the game we’ll see improvement in the game.
