- Simple and spooking sounding wind instrument that can be made from recycled materials.

Just like old times. Always good to find something which screams nostalgia. Keep up the good work and have a nice day.
Thanks for the visit
I made one from a Coke 2 liter bottle.and another one from a Gain Detergent bottle. It sounds really spooky too. Thinking of making some Halloween ones being herein USA we get hefty north winds in October and on through winter. I might mount 4 on a cut out 12 inch wide wood circle and mount it all on a tall post.
Excellent!
Interesting! I'll give it a try for in the garden. Unfortunately this year the sunflowers don't really want to get going so i have to make instead of grow things to look at.
Warm greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱.
Sunflowers would be nice to look at, but maybe you can add colour to your wind organs?
😂. Awesome. First time in my life I seen that.
Excellent!
Blessings dear friend
Same to you
Hi I mount mine one on each end of the board. I drill hole in the lid. I use a drill press and drill 2 holes atound 5 inches long Then I cut it out with strong Sizers. I mount the 2 bottles on each end of the board and attach.the board to a post. I have found that the harder the plastc bottles the better the sound. I point one bottle to the north and the other one on other end of board. This way if winds switch one or the other bottles will hoot. I can hear them 50 feet away.
That's a great idea
Are there any places making these professionally? I made one this morning but not sure if it will work. How loud can they get?
I got a grant to make some, but it's not really enough to live on -- so I'm not sure that qualifies as "professional"!
Anyway, have a listen to ua-cam.com/video/Ke7iSsTBN14/v-deo.html
How many of these should I construct and install in an out-of-sight location in order to achieve maximum impact on freaking out my neighbor?
Dunno, how good is your neighbour's hearing?
@bassling, He has decent hearing, but more importantly, he’s always listening😛
Have you ever tried mounting one of these whistles upon a platform that rotates-similar to a weathervane-so as to maintain the angle at which the wind flows around the bottle in relation to the slit?
That's a good idea. I'd been entertaining an idea more like a windmill, where you can create the airflow at a rate to get the overblow effect that increases audible volume.
@bassling that would be incredible and so fun to build. I hope you’ll consider posting whatever contraption your come up with. You could very likely achieve the necessary velocity with blades even in gentle wind speeds, I’d reckon. I do wonder, however, if creating a weathervane or a bladed system might detract from the sonic quality through the introduction of stability. I ended up making a few of these bottles and placing them in the garden. What I noticed, like with music, the periods of silence and variability in volume contribute greatly to the perceived quality of sound. This is, of course, achieved through the generally turbulent nature of wind. But I’m probably overthinking this as well. Neither of these approaches are likely to achieve such a constant flow of laminar movement as to produce a completely flat sound. Such a fun project!
NICE
easy free pure music
Thanks
You're welcome!
You can drill hole in lid and then mount it on a beam over porch or on a post or deck railing top and screw the bottles on and if you need to turn the slot you can turn the lid a bit. I found out that mounted on a beam, the sound is a bit louder. I guess the wood porch beam resonates the bottle some. I drill 5/8ths hole near top and drill another one 5 inches below it and then cut the slots out with Sizers
I drill 2 5/8th holes one below top and one 5 inches below that and cut the slots out with scissors.
Yeah cool, that's one way.
I've been using a Dremel:

Hi can you make them from a metal can?
Yes, any round object with parallel sides should work.
@@bassling I was thinking of mounting some on top of plastic box containers for amplification.
@@bassling I finally tried the aluminum beer bottles and they are louder and a bit different in sound.
Ii mount mine on 2 by 4s I drill hole in cap and mount tight upside down.
That's great! Let me know how they sound?
@@bassling The 2 that I have on fence posts are doing great. I have found out that you can turn the slots to northwest and you will get the north winds sliding by the slots. In spring and summer I turn slots to south to get southwest winds. Seems like the tighter they are mounted on a post , they will hoot better. I will soon try to see if I can amplify them mounted to a larger plastic container and I will let you know. I believe that the lower container they are mounted on would make them a bit louder.
just grab a adustable saw blade to do wide cuts to make them much faster. the blade is wierd it wobbles on the adjusted mesurments you twist it to.
Dunno, I've only recently been allowed to use the scissors!
I am going to get some pvc 4 inch wide pipe and make one for a test. I will seal top and bottom and add an oil funnel for the cap which will resemble a tin man. Mount it up high and see what it will do.
Great idea
this didn't work for me :(
See ua-cam.com/video/Ke7iSsTBN14/v-deo.html for a better view of the slit to cut into the vessels
Make sure it is in good flowing winds. North west winds in winter to point the slot side to.
Nice!
Thanks!
Wish you showed the cut closer to see it.
Thanks for that feedback, Brian.
The cut should be rectangular, particularly the long sides of the slit need to be close to parallel.
I'll see about providing a follow-up video, as I'm thinking about revisiting this project in coming months.
G'day again, made a new video that shows some more detail. See ua-cam.com/video/Ke7iSsTBN14/v-deo.html
Would I actually have to go buy some plastic bottles??
Not necessarily. Any round container with parallel sides should work, but ideally longer than 8cm. Plastic bottles are easier to cut than more rigid materials though.
No worked
Oh no! What happened?
