Very cool! My Dad taught me to make whistles from green poplar and willow branches years ago. It'd be great to be able to make whistles from dried timber and show him how, so many years later! Kind of a full circle project. I think that we'll do that this Father's Day since I am still fortunate enough to have my father with me. Thanks for the inspiration James!
I love this project. I'm teaching a woodworking class to kids at a summer camp this year and I've been looking for projects to do with them. This is perfect.
Watched this with my kids and they want one now. Enjoying your how to videos and pleased that you are part of the resurgence of woodworking hand tools. Those old tools are very affordable and with your help and instruction fairly easy to use. Thanks.
Hi, it's usually a good sign when someone is inspired by your work... I made one today in one hour. I have kids and they were thrilled with my build. Man, that felt good. Thanks! 🙏
My grandad use to make these with me when I was a little kid and would only let me use handtools. Thanks for reminding me of such great memories!! Love your work and the channel. Have learned a ton from you!!
Just wanted to say thanks again. Made these with the kids for father's day. No power tools and they had a ball. Meant so much to them! Thanks for bringing it back for my family!!
I watch several woodworking channels, but I always come back to yours because I feel like yours is true "wood working". Always a pleasure to watch you make just about everything by hand...except for that Triton planer you use (I guess for your sanity). Great job as always.
Would definitely like one of those aprons. I came looking for tips for designing a whistle for 3D printing and was blown away by this video. Simple and no power tools. Gorgeous.
Hi James. Just ran across this video and just in time, too. My grandson's birthday party is tomorrow and this is going to be a present for him. His parents deserve it. Hehehe. When you mentioned about not going too far into the hole when cutting the angle and not getting chips in the hole I thought a tip would be to put in a sacrificial piece of dowel to cover the hole while chiseling the angles. I'm going to try this tomorrow. Thanks for the idea.
This is such a well timed video! My old dog is going really deaf and I was talking with my wife just today about trying to retrain him with a whistle as he can't hear voice commands anymore. Out to the shed I go! P.S. I would love one of those aprons 😉
I would very much like an apron. I have thoroughly enjoyed your channel. You don't know it, but you really helped me stay sane while I finished my Master's degree. Thank you for all of the content and especially your attitude about the work you do.
I enjoyed the project & the video. I wish I could see a close up view into the notch. I watched twice looking for clarification, which did help. Thanks for posting it.
James, I’ve been watching for a while and I love your channel. I watch you than Alec Steele, in that order every day! Great build on the whistle. FYI, I’m working on my hand tool build for your challenge, can’t wait to submit it.
Great video for a Fathers Day gift! Thanks for sharing James. My dad has long past but I know there will be a whistle in my future!! I raised my son from 14 on my own so I’m a sort of mom/dad type of gal!!! I enjoy your videos James. Take care and Happy Fathers Day to you!!,
I love purple heart. My grandson gave me a 4 board-foot slab that I use to make scales for knife handles with damascus steel blanks. The combination is beautiful!
I LOVE this! I might make this for Father's day just to give to my 2 year old (he hasn't quite figured out how to shop for planes just yet). I'm curious about making this into a slide whistle too, but I love the inspiration. Thanks!
Excellent! I love finding these quick little projects! I'm just a hobbiest woodworker and don't get as much shop time as I'd like, so these fast projects are great! Keep 'em coming! Also, please enter me for those aprons if you ship to the Great White North, thank you!
Great project! I was thinking about a father's day project for my sons and this might be a fun one. Just want to say thank you for the opportunity to win one of your aprons. I like the look of them and would enjoy winning one. Whether I win one or not I really want to express my appreciation for all you do for the woodworking community. THANK YOU! P. S. Congratulations to all the winners.
Way cool! I've seen a lot of these made but never got around to making one. I wanna try a larger steam train whistle. I know my hearing is pretty bad- when you blew it at the end I couldn't hear a thing but my dogs sure did did!

Great project. It will be fun to share some shop time with my granddaughter and make one of these. She will love it

Thanks, always looking for quick little projects to do with grandkids.
A nice little project to complete with my sons, thanks for the videos!
I love this! Simple project to do with limited tools and probably one I'll do with my 4 year old daughter. Should be fun.
Very easy to follow video , just what I wanted. I plain to make 3 of these for my grandkids. Thank you for your help
A project that would be great to do with my grandson. That apron would be a sweet gift for me as well.
Nice project to do with my daughter, and good looking apron too.
This is such a well timed video! My old dog is going really deaf and I was talking with my wife just today about trying to retrain him with a whistle as he can't hear voice commands anymore. Out to the shed I go! P.S. I would love one of those aprons 😉
Enjoyed the whistle. It took me back to making one from a stick with my dad. Thanks.
This is a great little project. Thanks for sharing. I hope to have my son help me make a couple of them on Father's day.
great little project. I am going to make a few this weekend with my kids.
I never thought I would hope for an apron for Father's Day, but sudenly that has become the case.
Fun little project. Think I’ll make one tomorrow before work.
This whistle would make any kids day, and a great looking apron would make any wood workers Father’s Day.
Well done! I like the idea of working with the kids on this project.
Seems like a fun project to make with kids. I'll have to save that for when my daughter get older.
I would very much like an apron. I have thoroughly enjoyed your channel. You don't know it, but you really helped me stay sane while I finished my Master's degree. Thank you for all of the content and especially your attitude about the work you do.
My two year-old loves watching these with me, maybe I'll wake up to a wooden whistle one of these days
I enjoyed the project & the video. I wish I could see a close up view into the notch. I watched twice looking for clarification, which did help. Thanks for posting it.
Fun project! I had a wood whistle when I was a kid, loved it! I'll make one for my son.
Purple Heart is awesome, and lol you testing the whistle after putting the dowel in drove my dogs crazy
Le'Jackal Creations XD
great project , the simplicity of it accentuates the beautiful wood really well.
Great project! Going to try to make a couple with the kids.

Cool little project. Gonna have to try it with my kiddo.

What a fun little project. I am working with wood from skids and will try making some whistles for the grandkids.
Cool project going to do one for my dad for Father's day. It's been awhile since I have made him something. Thanks for the idea!
Thanks, Mr. Wright! Excited to give this shot.
Love Purple Heart ! Nice starter project for the kids and I love that apron too!!!

An apron will be one more thing for me to start woodworking!
I could definitely use a shop apron. Keep up the great work James.
Great, easy project! I'll have to give it a try with the kids!
I LOVE this! I might make this for Father's day just to give to my 2 year old (he hasn't quite figured out how to shop for planes just yet).
I'm curious about making this into a slide whistle too, but I love the inspiration. Thanks!
Can I scale this up by using my ice fishing auger on a tree trunk? Get a nice rich bass tone?
Lol now that sounds like fun.
Heh. So instead of dogs, you'll be driving elephants crazy, or maybe whales. 🐳
Great video - I’ll be making one of these for my granddaughter this weekend.
Awesome idea for the kids! And the idea of making tone holes is interesting too; you could make a simple flute to play some tunes on!
That's a fun little project with a really unique wood I've never heard of. Thanks for another great video.
Down below. That whistle looks fun to make. My son had one that sounded like a train engine when he was younger. I should make him one of these.
Lovely idea, James - I can whistle while I work, using the whistle that I worked!!!
That looks so easy! Looks like my maple scraps will be turning in to whistles!
Great project James. I like the idea of extra pitch holes.
I'm amazed at how you managed to make a whistle project turn Major Cool !!
Great idea James! I am going to make one of these whistles! Thanks for another great video!
Neat whistle, and the purple heart looks great.
Thanks James. Another great job. I would really like to see a video sometime about using the compass plane...
Love the quick and easy projects for beginners. Something I’ll have to try for sure!
Great video as always! I thoroughly enjoy how you break down projects to easy to follow steps and encourage everyone that they can make stuff too.
Great project for Dad & Son or Daughter.on Dad’s Day. Nice apron too, I’d like to have one like it. Good job. Regards, Chuck

Great small project. Looking forward to making this with my boys!
Great video... This would be a great project for kids to make -- especially for Father's Day!
That apron would look so purdy next to the new bench you guys are helping me build over on Fbook. Thanks!
NEAT! I didn't know it was so easy to make a whistle. Of course, it would be MUCH easier with one of those awesome shop aprons! Nice job.
Hey there, thinking of doing an even simpler version of this with my Cub scouts. Did you ever make a version of this video with the kids?
I have not yet. I'm actually planning on doing it with our Cub scout troop here soon and thought that would be a good opportunity to shoot the video.
That very first sentence gets this clip an automatic thumbs up!!! 😆 🤣 😂 👍👍👍
Absolute beauty in hand made craftsmanship!
I love Purple Heart. What a great project for it!
Whistle Stop Cafe. Thinking of trying one with a loose dowel in the back end for a slide whistle.
This is one of those quick projects I've always wanted to do, but just never made the time! Fun!
This would be a great project for the kids. Thanks for the video
I'm a beginner and I appreciate your instructions. Thanks
Thanks Richard. I will keep them comming!
Fun project. I plan on doing it with my friend's children this summer.
Looks like something I could actually make. Great project.
Really like the short but sweet projects. Awesome video!
Cool whistle, clear and easy thank you.
What's the over/under of James making a recorder on the spring-pole lathe??? 6 months?
LOL fairly good!
Fun project. It has inspired me to make a whistle with my son
Very nice. I copied a wooden whistle like that when I was a kid with help from my dad.
Love the whistle. I will be making 3 for my Grandsons.
Can’t wait to make some as Christmas gifts and use up some small scraps.
Fantastic idea!
A simple project that make me think on doing something similar. Thanks.
Great idea. I am going to try turning one on my lathe. Thanks
The Wooden Whistle is a great project for Boy Scouts. Thanks
That is a great little project. Thanks for sharing.

My kids like helping me in the shop this would be a good starter project for us to do together.
Nice job. I've wondered how to make a whistle.
I would love an apron. Please choose me.
Really enjoy your videos. Would it be possible to make one on how to make aTapered mortise reamer
that would be interesting to hear what it sounds like!
New dad here - would love an apron for Father's Day!
Enjoyed the video. Thank you for your passion in crafting in wood.
An apron would be a great fathers day present.
