- Kalani talks about the eight qualities that are key in successful group music facilitation: Leader/Follower, Teacher/Student, Friend/Guardian, and Observer/Story Teller. To get more, join World Drum Club at / kalani
Kalani demonstrates a few different types of wind wands. Wind Wands are similar in sound to the Bull Roarer, a sound effect used in nature for a variety of tasks.

So Kalani has finally revealed he's an Airbender!
The force is strong with this one.
Rip James Earl Jones . Soon as I read this comment I had that thought
In response to your question at 7 min 40 sec - Yes, that was TOTALLY what I was thinking!
Just made a couple of these out of Lego, a single band on each to produce 4 tones. Did not have any large bands like you use. The first one broke and went flying across the room. The 2nd I made out of Lego used an even smaller elastic band but I really liked the tones it produces, very harmonic and swinging softly only the most relaxed parts of the band vibrate.
Now that's a fun workout. The sabre duel sounded wild.
Thank you for giving the secret on how to stop the rattling on the 3rd wind wand...now, I can be happy when I play instead of bewildered on how to fix rattling.
These wind wands have a lot of potential for psychedelic music. I gotta get these.
For real, if you get creative you can make some space trippy music
This is so creative I love it. The application wasn't for me until the end when you started playing it in a waving motion instead of a circular motion. Sounds wild!
If you order a sheet of latex and glue, you can experiment with different shapes, thicknesses and widths.
That is sooo cool!!! Thanks a lot for sharing man!!! Will be fabricating some asap!
I think that they used these in the new Dune movie for the sound of the thopters.
They didn’t want the normal sound of a rotating helicopter blade but need the back and forth sound to suit the motion of the thopter’s flapping type blades.
[so that they sound like mechanical dragon fly wings]
Wow Kalani this is a really cool instrument I love it. :)
This is fun !!
I love it these things are cool. The traditional bull Roar that you swing on a string you have to do that outside and it takes a lot of effort to do it. I know you can get these off of Lark in the morning supposedly I'm having a hard time getting there website to process my order
I came from the sound of dragonfly planes in the movie Dune.
thanks it's really interesting
Kalani Das, you are cleared for takeoff!
Seeing this makes me want to hear those played in some heavily resonant space, with several stereo mic pairs setup all over the place to capture the stereo image.
Yeah - That would sound amazing
Or built up in size until it produces deep tones and attached to a robotic arm
I make these and they do sound much better outside.
Until I watched your vid, I hadn't known that the bands were rubber bands. I'd assumed they were fabric ribbons (tho those might work too).
ORNITHOPTERS
I... have to sample the wand battle.
Where did you get the long rubber bands and what size are they? Loved this video
i was thinking what you were thinking, yes lol
The last two wind wands, what type are they. I have 2 but would like one of those also. Amazing
Man that last one really does sound like a lightsaber, or a wave-able didgeridoo. I didn’t see your other video yet, but were these actually used for the original Star Wars sounds? I always assumed a synth sound, but now that I hear these...
Sounds like it could have been used for the Star Wars sounds...
really keen to buy some wind wands! googled and can't find any in stock
any recommendation?
Hey, any clue where to get a wind drum from? everywhere i look it's out of stock. I live in the UK but wouldn't mind ordering from abroad
Breaking wind!
Smashed it
Sound carry compared to a bullroarer?
No credit given to it’s historic origins as the Bull Roarer?
Do you think that the wind wand can be made with hemp rope or other natural cordage. I can understand if it would need to be adjusted any time you want to change the note or but I think if you had two cords that were tied to a single point then they would be ran along the path then you have a knot that you would use to tightly secure the entire cordage and you may even be able to use multiple cords for each path. Just a few ideas that I think I will be trying.
I was about to ask a similar question. Like, how would pre-industrial people would have made this?
@TaLeng2023 My thoughts are that they probably would have had two loops of cordage which they would tighten as much as possible until they have the desired tightness then depending upon what type of cordage they would either simply already have had the cross piece in place or have tied the cordage while wet or dry depending upon the type then soak it afterwards or dry it afterwards once again depending upon what type of cordage was used. I don't know everything it's only a hypothesis, though it is based on knowledge of different cultures, and many other things like material properties. For example there were some very strong chairs and other furniture which were only held together by mutual friction once fully dried. One of my very distant relatives made chairs like that and other furniture in the same way without machines that ran on gas or electricity.
Too Cool! 👍
Interesting instrument ! What would be the sounds, if the rubber band was replace, by different types of fabric ribbon, or metal band, or if the axis that stretch the band was a tube with an hole like a flute... ?!?
WHERE CAN I GET ONE!!?
Hello nice to meet you.
I need windwands.
Where did you get windward??
where can i buy a wind want?
Where can I get these?
The only thing missing is a light stick on each one. This will keep kids busy at night.
SAFETY FIRST! Dueling wind wands must stay 10 feet apart! They are too fragile to hit anything with. If kids want to hit each other, give them pool noodles.
I'm going to start a wind wand competition just to see what happens.
Who will represent the USA?
In a live situation how can you microphone this???
I would use a large diaphragm mic or one that picks up a wide area, such as those used for choirs.
@@WORLDDRUMCLUB cool! Thank you for your answer!
Bullroarers I think we called them when we were children.
Out of stock. Too bad for them. I have dowels, drill press, and wood glue.
They really don't look hard to make (says the guy who builds guitars).
