This is by far the most amazing and inspiring recording studio tour interview I’ve ever watch... and that one mic locker .. OMG! I went to Nashville and visited Blackbird, but I was closed. Next time I’ll camp outside and wait.
Hi Friends, John McBride's Blackbird Studio in Nashville, TN is easily one of the most amazing places that you will come across in this world of music, recording and producing. During our visit to Summer NAMM, Mark Rubel one of the teachers at the Blackbird Academy invited the Produce Like a Pro Team over for an interview and private tour of the facility. We had an amazing time, as I'm sure you can imagine. Mark shared with us his story about the conversation that he and John had when he decided to come and teach at Blackbird and start the academy. He also shared details about what the curriculum at blackbird is like and what he aims to teach the students during their time at the academy. We then toured this amazing facility, got to see all but one of the eight studios on the grounds, went entirely through their infamous microphone locker and got to browse through many shelves of outboard gear that is a part of Blackbird Audio Rentals. We had a marvellous time at Blackbird as there was so much to see and talk about. If you ever visit Nashville and are given the chance to see this studio, you should absolutely take it! Please watch the video, and leave a bunch of comments and questions. I hope you enjoy it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I just met a guy that has some really cool vintage gear like a urei 1176 and an altec 1567 etc. Any idea on who might be interested I thought of this place??
I’ve been a “dubbing mixer” for over 25 years now working on a few high profile shows here and there. What you said about the client spending time with you and feeling comfortable/looked after and listened to is the most important thing. You can learn the technology on the go from past experience .
I've had the rare experience of recording records with Mark Rubel and it was a formative experience to say the least. He cares about creating music and teaching more than most people I have met care about anything.
Great video as always Warren! Dave seems to be the kind of guy you'd want to hang out with every day, so humble and knowledgeable. My favourite studio tour to date!
Hi AJay, agreed, Mark is truly wonderful, I always love talking to him and this was a real pleasure to make this video! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Since finding Produce Like a Pro a year ago, I've went from being a guitar player that watches a friend engineer and produce to having my own humble basement studio. I can now walk into my basement at anytime, and have a ton of fun being creative and learning anytime I want. Im a much happier human being now. My wife (a pianist) and I both thank you very much, Mr. Huart. Loved the cameron web stuff. Any chance you will do more punk oriented guitar stuff in the future?

Amazing Warren! The interview section with Mark was amazing! I love that he just quit everything to come to Nashville and start the Blackbird Academy. Very bold move!
I took a couple recording studio classes while Mark Rubel was in Champaign IL through Parkland college and Pogo Studios. He is still the same and has an extreme wealth of knowledge. Even had the honor of setting up his band while he performed during Fourth of July shows here in Champaign. Glad that both the music industry and Black bird academy recognizes his talents, passion in music as well as being a great human being. Champaign IL misses you !
I dont own any of those expensive mics, but just the joy and love of music i have by seeing that interview, a smile took over my face during the whole mic locker part. Thank you for this Warren. Started recording in the late 90's and as you know in that time you had to really experiment to check what was the sound in your head. On guitars i tried 57's in all kinds of places on the speaker cone, just to find the best place for it, and the other day just saw a video on ross hogarth explaining that ONE position for him of a 57 on a guitar cab, and for me it took years to realize that. This is the future, and thank you for making the future a better place for anyone who wants to do this for a living. Regards
Hey Warren! Another great thing I want to compliment you on...I can listen to this in my living room with my wife and kids around and don't have to worry about any profane language. Completely classy, and as a father, I totally appreciate it!
Produce Like A Pro actually my name is Ted Gerard my 8 year old son some how took over my UA-cam account. I really loved that Mic shootout you did now I want a focusrite clarret 8 prex I already have the shure mics we had purchased when we bought a boss br1600 when it first came out, I'm thinking like 15 years ago. We still record with the boss today and currently working hard recording an album. We use cheap art preamps and a shure beta 57 for snare and cabs. I try to keep it simple. I do have a question. We are 3 piece rock band. I usually record my guitar tracks twice and pan them left and right, solo being the middle. Is there other ways to get that single guitar sound without using that technique? Thanks
Hi Ted, that technique to are describing is perfect! That's what almost all great Rock Producers and Mixers do! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I interned there back in 2006... Most magical place on earth... I had the incredible experience getting to be sort of a second assistant engineer (assisting Lowell Reynolds the assistant engineer) on a KOL session there for Because of the Times. During my time there I got to have discussions with George Massenburg, Richard Dodd, Ethan Johns, Tracey Korby, Vance Powell, and many other legends... I learned more in my 6 months there sweeping floors, carrying 670's through the rain from studio to studio (terrifying experience), setting up microphones, and wrapping cables than I did in my entire education at Full Sail. I miss that place every single day.
HA! Watched a little further... Richard Dodd DID mix that Dixie Chicks record in B. It was my first few weeks on the job. He was so frustrated because they kept asking him to remix a track (can't remember which one)... He did dozens and dozens of remixes and finally I recall him coming out of the control room all frustrated and saying he was just going to resubmit his original mix... and sure enough they loved it and went with it... He told me a lot of funny stories. At the time I spent a lot of time around the phones, and he would chat with me because Studio B is right there and he's a super friendly and personable guy. Honestly I had no idea who he was at the time, but loved talking with him as he had a ton of knowledge and a great sense of humor.

I had a fantastic experience. Now I'm running a small studio in town. I do stay busy tracking, mixing, live sound engineering and playing music. It takes time to get going. I'm honestly just starting to get really busy (I graduated in Dec 2017). However, everyone at Blackbird has been extremely supportive and helpful in every way possible. Great video Warren. Not a musician or an audio production person ... and I love great sound and the story behind the people that make beautiful music. Fantastic studio tour and I think the studio academy if a great idea. People will be looking for Blackbird Academy graduates to do their sound recordings. The Harvard of sound.
I am not kidding here - on the studio-tour, in this video, I was actually holding my breath every time you guys turned a corner or opened a door (to yet another heaven). Great stuff! Every time I sit down to track my friends music or mix his songs it's like being a kid again on Christmas morning anything is possible, I do it for the experience and he gets free studio time, sound like a great school I'd be the only 57 year old student but it would be so cool! Thanks again Warren you da man
WOWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! It makes me crazy to see those snares.....I love them.....Its real heaven over there and what a great interview and studio...!!!! Thanks Warren!!!!!!!! Ps. Other gear are impressive too, but I,m a studiodrummer interested in studiogear and producetips and tricks...(Keeping the mind open,hahaha...)
I can just imagine the crack on that titanium snare! Blackbird is really a dream studio and the academy there looks like an incredible place to learn and work!
Man I would have only the slightest, tinest idea of what to do with all that gear, but I could happily spend the rest of my days there figuring it out! That might just be heaven on earth there!
Great video, as always ! And yes, Sanken mics are great, and a well-kept secret. One of the venues I work at has a (pretty old, 90s I guess) stereo pair of CU-31s, which are their "pencil" SDC mic. Indeed super smooth yet detailed in the high-end. Sounds great on overheads, hat, piano, classical instruments, you name it. Each and every visiting engineer I got to A/B them with KM184s ended up googling these with the intention of purchasing some...
Great one! Now my wish is a special episode on just the Massenburg room. The theory, the sound and how they use it. That is really the only one of it's kind.

one of my favourite videos you've done so far. This guy is a genius.
pressed like before even watching. That facility is so amazing, as is your channel Warren!
was JUST about to say the same thing lol "like first, watch later"
haha yeah a Blackbird Studio tour can't even remotely be something bad

Digging the mood of Studio D, Studio C and even Studio I, the academy studio. So inspiring.
Yes Per! Amazing! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
It took me a while to marry warren with music I knew he was a producer but his guitar playing on a Tim Pierce video finally made the connection for me... Warren is really a good guitar player and now I know why he has a passion for music and I love it
Thanks ever so much! That really means a lot! Tim is a wonderful player!!
Thanks Warren for another great interview with the marvelous Mark.
Yes thanks very much!! Mark was very gracious to show us around!! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
If there is a heaven it must be Blackbird Studios.
Blackbird Studio needs to partner with Steven Slate or Toontrack and grace us with an expansion pack containing THAT DRUM COLLECTION!!! Great interview Warren.
Hi Keith, Yes! I believe they have!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Yeah, an expansion pack containing all the collection would be amazing! Toontrack did the Roots SDX at Blackbird and did use some of the drums from that collection. They also used mics from that mic locker as well.
🎵 Thank you so much for the inspiring tour thru BlackBirdStudios! I’m now extra thankful to live in the U.S. because of their rental side of things - yes!!! 🎵
Wow...this is amazing! I've taught almost 20 years at my local two-year college and love it. So great to hear this. I teach IT, so it's just a little related to music technology, but I'm hoping to start and continuing education course on DAWs, recording and mixing this coming Spring. Love this!
Wow! Thanks so much to you both! What a great episode! And I echo what Mark said about doing. Great service to the industry!
Thanks Dave! Yes, Mark is wonderful! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I'm out of "wows"! This was ridiculously amazing! Like a hyper-tera Toys 'R' Us for audio geeks! One can only dream of even just holding one of those incredible microphones in his hands (to mention just those.) Thanks for the visit. Another one of your incredible videos. Well done! ;-)
Haha I hear you Claudius!! Yes, toys for geeks is a great way of looking at it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
It´s simply the most beautiful studio on this planet, at least to me.
Many thanks Warren, you certainly know how to provide entertainment for an extended lunch break!
Great stuff M.B.G. Music Production! So glad to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Awesome awesome awesome. If I wasn't an old guy I believe I'd would have loved to work in a studio. Thanks for the tour.
amazing place, more importantly... amazing people. thanks for the tour!
This gentleman we see is very educated and has a very good prospective on life first and producing secondary. Please remember true art is all about What we feel. What we view and how we feel. How we view, This is true emotion and Art. It is nice to listen to a true believer. Thank you Mr, Huart.
Amazing place!!! Great video. I can't imagine the amount of gear that we couldn't see on that video. Thanks for sharing places like this one with us!!

Really inspiring to listen to both of you & I wish you all the success that you both deserve .. personally I hope to become part of the Produce like a pro academy some time soon .. all the best to you both .. cheers
Hi Ben, I look forward to seeing you in there!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Great video Warren. Not a musician or an audio production person ... and I love great sound and the story behind the people that make beautiful music. Fantastic studio tour and I think the studio academy if a great idea. People will be looking for Blackbird Academy graduates to do their sound recordings. The Harvard of sound.
If Bob Ross would be a sound engineer, he would be mr John Mcbride. Such a wise, inspirational and calm guy. Thanks for this video Warren!
I've been waiting for this video since you posted photos of this studio on instagram! Also, Mark has a great sense of humour!
Thanks Tomé Silva! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Warren this is one of your most amazing videos. Thank you for sharing.
This place is awesome!! John's mic are true jewels!! I would love to pass by one day. Thanks man!!

Hi Timothy! Agreed 100%!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I am not kidding here - on the studio-tour, in this video, I was actually holding my breath every time you guys turned a corner or opened a door (to yet another heaven). Great stuff! Dont know if I should laugh or cry :-)
...and ses, all this "just tools" but my oh my, I feel that even though I am trying to escape the trap of materialism - it is still very much a part of me ;-)
I'm watching this on a sunday and it feels like I'm having a church tour. I've never seen so much gear, outside the musicstore in cologne.
WOW! it's like a recording compound and I love it. Thanks.
Amazing, fantastic studio to say the least. and so nice to hear you get deserved kudos from Mark. Derek
Thanks ever so much for that kind comment Mark! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
That was a fantastic interview and tour! Thank you so much.
what a great interview you helped me realize a great thing..change is inevitable! we all need to stop bitchin about no budgets, no A& R and on and on I am an older guy who is just getting into this I love music although my profession has been as an aerospace engineer the last 20 years before I was a wanna be rock star guitar player so i don;t have time to waste complaining about how it was in the 70's or 80's. it is what it is. Every time I sit down to track my friends music or mix his songs it's like being a kid again on Christmas morning anything is possible, I do it for the experience and he gets free studio time, sound like a great school I'd be the only 57 year old student but it would be so cool! Thanks again Warren you da man
Best studio tour ever! Thanks!
OMG What a pleasure to see this!
Thanks Alberto!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
That tuning key is a revelation! stunning stuff again Warren, nice one mate!

Hi Doug, I agree to both of those points!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I was thinking of an alt title: The legendary place where a legendary producer makes legendary records of legends.
Haha yes, indeed, Loren! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
How absolutely amazing. Your channel is very educational and Mark was such a great host.
Hi James, thanks very much! Yes, Mark was a very gracious host indeed! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

Hi Jordan, thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Here's a happy little snare, and why don't we put a little kick drum in there, because the snare needs a friend. Haha! He does have that calm voice.
Man I would have only the slightest, tinest idea of what to do with all that gear, but I could happily spend the rest of my days there figuring it out!
That might just be heaven on earth there!
Very Amazing place Thx for the tour...
Great tour thx. What a place! As you entered theat rental gear room i spielled my coffe.
"Yeah so, stuff, things, we got all of those." Brilliant
Hahaha indeed Steve! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
This is such an awesome interview, thank you Warren
Glad you enjoyed it
Best start if a video I have seen so far. All good but this opening was the best.
Thanks ever so much for the great comment!! Great insight indeed about Sanken Mics! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
My god, this is truly unbelievable ....
WOW, what a nice mic locker. This was awesome!
Hi Nick, yes, amazing mic locker! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Utterly mind boggling stuff.
Hi angrybonbon can't argue with that! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
That was amazing!! I hope to set foot in Blackbird one day
I love how calmly he says "Beatle stuff"
Great one! Now my wish is a special episode on just the Massenburg room. The theory, the sound and how they use it. That is really the only one of it's kind.
