Thank you! Very helpful! Can you tell me how I would use these to go across an opening between garage and house? As in free standing on paved drive way. HOw to attach a post, and then how to make the post stand up on its own without going into the ground. Thanks very much!!
You can install post brackets which get screwed into your existing concrete slab. They are very strong. They will keep the bottom of your 4x4 or 6x6 wooden post off the ground. If you are attaching to dirt then you have to install a footing which is a lot more work. Digging and concrete. You can also use half wine barrels, wood or vinyl to sink your posts into with concrete. Depending on the top weight of the wood rafters you use, they are strong enough to hold vines. Personally, I would stay away from vines. Over the years they get invasive everywhere, compromise the strength of the wood they are attached to, and require alot of maintenance to keep them from overgrowth. Better to simple install your posts and either 1x1 tops or 4x8 pre made lattice panels. If you are trying to get shade, 1x2's going across with shade material weaves through them will give you great shade, looks good and is strong. The weave installment stands up to any wind.
does the lattice sag at all? i bought some flimsy pvc lattice that didn't have a plastic frame. do you think theres anything else i should do? maybe use a 1" nailing strip around it?
They sold it like this at my local Berco Redwood. The other option would be to make a frame of 2”x4” and then use some smaller wood to frame and box it into the 2x4. Like sandwich it on both sides
I am searching for the square shaped lattice but having a having a hard time locating any. I can find vinyl but not the wooden panels. Any suggestions? Thanks
Also, over time the vines became so thick that it took alot of work to trim the vines. The vines weaved their way through the wooden slats breaking them. I put them in for privacy, but in hindsight, it would have been better to attach an extra 3 feet of fence slats to the top of the fence.
@@lanceoa I had actually bought some last week. I didn't like it at all. I didn't get to choose the color, the option to sand down the splinters was non existent, and they were way over priced. Approximately $24 per sheet. I returned them right away, and got back $207. I decided to make my own. I got time. The problem is, I am trying to figure out how to strip/rip 2x4's safely on a table saw. Every lattice video on UA-cam seems to skip that key piece of information. 😒
99% of people won’t make their own lattice... it’s just too much effort for the returns... the premade examples are affordable and easily configured to your specific uses- enjoy!
00:01:40 "I used these little galvanized L-brackets to attach it." Yeah, and they were the ugliest aspect of the project. I wonder what might be better to mount those nice panels?
@@lanceoa No suggestions . . . . I asked the question. I watched the video because I am building similar panels against a similar fence. The guy does a solid job on the panels, then uses ugly, obtrusive hardware attached with the wrong kind of screws. After the cost and effort for the panels, want to avoid the same fate. So, again, I wonder what are better alternatives?
Great idea on the brackets, but your daughters are the ones who stole the show. They are adorable!
Haha 😂 fun they made a special guest appearance!!!
Can you please add links to the materials (Lattice and frame)?
Big Tip :::::: drill drain holes for water/moisture drainage in the bottom wood plate or water will pool there and rot your lattice in short time.
Thx for the pro tip!!!
Where did you get the square lattice panel and other wood?
Where did you get the notched 2x4s ?
that is so gorgeous. so do the vines just start growing and twisting on it over time? what kind of plant is best?
Looks very attractive and functional.
Many thanks! Yes it can serve many uses!
I would like a demonstration on creating the frame for a piece of lattice...how the groove is made.....please
Frame was purchased pre-grooved... you would need a table saw with a dado blade

Look up free standing post base. Put posts on both sides of a screen lattice

I love the kind of lattice you used, but I can't find those panels anywhere. All I see are the traditional diamond lattice. Where did you get those?
TY, I got them at my local redwood supply. www.bercoredwood.com

Nice job! Cute kids! I wish there were a way to hide that groove hole on the upper and lower rails. Is there a way?
Thanks!! I should’ve done 45 degree joints on the ends
I love these! Great video. I'm a new subscriber! ❤
Many thanks 👏

Yeah that strip wouldn’t hurt… there is a slight sag in the middle over time but overall doesn’t look bad
@@lanceoa thanks again
How do I find that wood with the middle notched ot to make the lattice frame?

I got mine from Berco Redwood. Perhaps check your area redwood supply
Lowes, Menards
where did you find the notched pieces? all I am finding is the small inserts for lattice, love the video!
Susan Bruner my local redwood lumber yard had them pre-notched. Bercorewood.com
My experience with vines was that over time it destroyed my wood fence from the weight and rats and possums loved running through the vines.

Where did you purchase your panels. I have been searching all over for square lattice like yours

Very nice work! 🙂
How did you cut the channels out of the 2by4?
Berco Redwood in my area sells them precut specifically for lattice panels
Thanks for your vid, very nice Where did you get the 2 by with channel

Wow! Beautiful!
what is the measurement of the grove wood . will list for me. i m try to make this and I keep messing something up :(
Groove is 15/16” just shy of a full inch.
@@lanceoa oh no i mean the length of the wood. L x W and the lattice. ty for reply
4x8 lattice sheets
@@lanceoa and what length do you cut the top/bottom and side pieces? thank you
Where do you buy the kit? Can't find the end connector pieces
My local wood supply, Berco Redwood does the notch frame lumber- search the website
Could this be used for a grape vine?
Yes
Is that lattice 1and 3/4" privacy, or 2 and 5/8" regular opening size? Thanks.
2&5/8 size
Very nice! 👍
Was that one a stand alone and how did you secure it to the concrete?
This one was secured to the fence for climbing vines, jasmines, using some galvanized 90 degree brackets....
You did not make a lattice panel.
😆 neither did u
how long were the screws please? thanks
I think I used 2.5” on the corners..
@@lanceoa 👌
Any measurements on the 2x4?
Good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you!
How much was total cost
I had actually gone to Lowe's and bought 8 panels. I returned them the next day. They totaled $207.
Thx
awesome....thanx

Nice

should be titled, how to frame a lattice panel, not make a panel.
95% or more will likely not make their own lattice. With avail lattice in variety of wood, plastics... who makes lattice except this old house
I was hoping that this video was on how to create lattice.
Much cheaper to buy pre assembled. So many tools and to layout staple and space the lattice

@@jfuite hide it with a French Cleat and stand off the fence or secure in between redwood 4x4 posts with decorative caps
Or just paint the brackets the color of the wood and you won’t even notice them. 🙂
Like a surgeon stitching a new heart into place, you have to go for strength, not appearance. Specially when no one will see it!
Lousy video, bro, as you have failed to show us how you made the lattice strips! Geez!
Not cost effective to make that part bro!

Who the hell makes their own lattice strips?? If you have that much time on your hands, I'm jealous!

How did you create that notch to slide the lattice in?
