I just installed a new motor controller yesterday! Your video gave me courage and some tips. The part was 375$ tax and delivery. Had to remove left kick plate and rear pull out tray remove batteries and set batteries aside. You have to do this to get access to that harness. Hardest part was cutting the seal wrapping! Connected the Blue, green, red, black and white to its receiver mate. We put very heavy batteries back in place hooked them up and said a little prayer to the universe! Bingo, she almost popped a wheelie. I was back in business! Our symtoms were although we had a full battery charged, but the ryobi would neither move forward nor backwards. The blades would spin. The beeper beeped....it freely would roll forwards or push backwards no grinding or noise so it was not the actual motor via Ryobi rep info... The ryobi rep said it was the motor controller. Told me i was out of warranty and on my own lol! Gave me phone number to order the part.I didn't get any documents from the tech. I was all on my own. Because its impossible to find a mechanic to work on these machines ryobi should provide more specific written instructions on replacement steps these parts are expensive! I wanted to drop a comment on your feed because other folks might have questions about replacing motor controller! 😊😊😊
Thanks for sharing your experience with the video. My RM480ex is working great going on year 3, but learning about your experience will be a big help if mine should develop this problem. Again, thanks for sharing! Much appreciated!
Thanks. My RM300e blades stopped working yesterday. This will save me some time because I'll have some idea what I'm talking about when I call Ryobi.
I got the same mower. Today I cleaned it, sharpened the blades & washed the deck. Put it back together & got a similar issue but my blades would spin for about 5sec then stop. I looked on Google & this is the closest to my issue I found.
What I should've done 1st was check the cables. I neglected to plug one in & everything worked fine after it was connected. This is embarrassing for me as I used to do musical instrument repair & for a while I answered the phone "hello, have you checked your cables today". In my defense most of my neighbors are retired so I had 2 guys discussing a botched dishwasher installation while I was working.
Thanks for posting this. It helped me eliminate the motor controllers as my problem.
Kind of hard to hear everything you were saying.
So what was the final fix/solution? Did you say that you replaced that Silver Motor controller box that you removed at the end with a new one provided by Ryobi?
Appreciate you showing us how you measured volts across various components on the mower.
Yes, he said that one of the motor controllers was bad.
I have a 30-in Ryobi mower and one of the two 15-in blades does not work. Wondering if there is a separate fuse that goes to each of the blades motors
I mowed one time and they have stopped working. Thanks for the video.
mine just had this happen today mowing some longer grass. Same issue. Hopefully the same problem.
I hae been having a similar problem, kind of. The blades will spin sometimes. I've had times where the would not spin, I would blow up the top of the deck with a compressor and then the blades would spin. That worked several times, then stopped. Most recently, when the blades would not spin I would disconnect the slave drive, engage the PTO and the master would spin for a few seconds, then reconnect the slave and the blades would spin. I could shut it down and back and the blades would spin unless it was sitting for a few hours then the process would not work. The impedience checked out properly for both motors and both controllers. Would a capacitor issue cause this sort of behavior. It's frustrating trying to diagnose an issue that doesn't happen all the time. I bought the mower, new, at an auction so not from an authorized dealer so Ryobi said warranty would be void. I actually "reviewed" the issue on their website but the review was never made public. (It was a perfectly respectable review, no expletives or name calling. Honest!)
Troubleshooting begins at 5.2 in video.
Great help, thank you! Both my controllers are fine, but the wire connecting them has been broken. Does anyone know if they are a separate part or wire harness that can be replaced? Or am I just going to get creative with electrical tape?
I think the wires are connected to motor controller internally. I will verify when I get home from lunch
Do you know the part number for the controller? I have the same problem
Did the ohm tests and all checked out ok as per your video. Any other suggestions as to why blades wont turn on?
Yes, after I swapped it out, it measured correctly.
This is my other account.. probably why I missed a lot of these comments..
i have exact same problems , where to claim the warranty
Mine have all the power including the blade , full charged batteries but it will not go forward or backward
Okay where do you purchase the controller from?
did you ever fined the controller?
@@zarrenvolk3482 yes but it wasn’t the controller, it was bad connections.
After 8 years of ownership I would definitely not recommend the Ryobi riding electrics. About every 3 years we've had a component failure and not be able to use our mower for half the season. Support usually comes through, but it takes months dealing with them if you don't have a Ryobi service center nearby. Too bad, we have other electric tools from other brands that have lasted way longer problem free.
Aloha from Mark Nye thefixitguy here in Kaneohe Oahu. Send me the contact information for Ryobi because they haven't responded to any of my phone calls or emails.
Great Video.
I suspect that this is the same issue I am having with a 480 EX that I am serving.
I only checked the one side and it read 18 ohms and we didn't check the other side before the owner had to head back home with the mower.
This was the guy Bo.Robertson@ttigroupna.com
Not sure if he is still there…. Send me your email I can send you the troubleshooting guide they sent me.
Great video. Before going this route, it might be worth doing this other check for the pins in the motor connectors because sometimes they get pushed back and can't make a good connection anymore. Here's a short video (less than 2 minutes) on that _just in case._ : ua-cam.com/video/793Ybfm51IE/v-deo.html If that doesn't fix the issue then test your resistance like in the video above.
Mine have stopped too.
Talked to local warranty agent who said I could bring it in tomorrow with 2-3 week turnaround depending on parts.
Got mine back today less than 2 weeks. Deck controllers replaced under warranty.
