The lyrics are about being gay, wanting to be accepted, to have safe PDA in public. The chains of *their* love are holding them back from that feeling of belonging that gets taken away once you come out.
Now that the community is so split apart 💔 its hard to feel that belonging.
It's pretty universal of a theme, really. No one is free until everyone's free.
@@catserver8577 absolutely. Of course, one wants to honor the artist's message before applying it to all, but the best art speaks to each of us, wherever we are.
@@sdob9054 An entire population decimated by the AIDS crisis begs to differ. The song is about love, however, and what is good for the world. And it's probably more personal to the writers than meant to be an anthem. It just happened to kind of be one.
@@mayabairey I understand, but the artists I think were not speaking of their particular relationship, but possibly individual feeling from their own experiences. Seeing as Vince and Andy were not a couple but partners in songwriting and bandmates, they were probably meaning it more as an ally song and an personal experience song. The world needs more love and understanding. Contrary to modern beliefs, empathizing with something we all have experienced in different circumstances is exactly how to achieve that. I am just not a believer that "us and them" is ever a good view, unless we are talking decent human beings and sociopaths.
Vince Clark is a true genius with a catchy pop tune, did it with Depeche Mode, then with Yazoo and then with Erasure here. Brilliant and Andy Bell with his incredible voice is the icing on the cake. What a Duo!
Love this group. Sometimes, Love to Hate You, Blue Savannah, Always, Run to the Sun, Drama, Rock Me Gently, Fingers and Thumbs....and so many other good tunes
OMG!!!! So happy you picked this one, Sal!!!! LOVE this song so freaking much . . . it's soooo overwhelming and lush. And that Andy Bell . . . . 😍Even my husband said, "Now that is a handsome man!"
So glad you've discoverd Erasure; they are Synth Pop Royalty. Recommend reactions to "A Little Respect" and "Love to hate You". The 80s were Epic!
He’s already done A Little Respect 🙂
He reacted to A Little Respect two weeks ago.
the first time I heard Erasure was way back in 1984/85 at a dance club in NYC. They remain on my playlist - along with Yaz, The Communards, Bronski Beat, Pet Shop Boy, New Order, and Depeche Mode, to name a few good ones for you to check out.
Far from gay, but my musical ears say differently buddy....😂
"Lookin' out for others, our sisters and our brothers.." This transcends all boundaries! BE HUMAN-KIND ❤
Next? Ship of Fools, if you've not done it already. My favourite track, though is "when I needed you".
So glad you're checking out Erasure again... And so soon. They have so many amazing and catchy songs. Please check out "Sometimes", "Drama" or "Always"
Remember dancing to this song😊
Andy Bell would be blown away by your lovely comments Salvo.
Other Erasure favorites are Oh Lamour, Stop, Drama, Blue Savannah, and Run to the Sun!
The synth pop lovers out there must be in heaven! 😁✌️
Erasure has an immense catalog. Their early songs were amazing. Andy married my friend, he’s shy and kind. Puerto Rico adores Erasure. I met him on a cruise and then few years after he met my friend. After all these years still going strong with music. Checkout Elevation, a few years old but wonderful.
That's lovely to know. I always imagined Andy would be kind.
HUGE Erasure fan ALWAYS‼️
Definitely need to check out Yaz (U.K. - Yazoo). Vince and Alison Moyet. Alison has one of my favorite female voices of all time.
I had to put on "Bring your love down" after reading this. #upstairsaterics
I love these guys. It’s an incredible album too!!
Yep, I agree with others suggesting "Ship Of Fools" needs to be next, for a slightly different, yet equally great vibe from them. A timeless tune!
Masters of the 3 minute pop song
I always feel Summer vibes when I hear this song kick in!
Also check out the duo Yaz. Alison Moyet and one of the members of Erasure from the early 80s. Songs include, "Situation", and "Don't go"
Andy was the perfect successor to Alison because their voices are similar. I think Salvo would enjoy Yaz’s "Only You,” even though it’s not a dance song.
@jellyrollnorton Yes...that's the other song. Couldn't think of the title lol
Yes! 🥰
Synth-pop-tastic! Recommendations:- "Love To Hate You", "Sometimes", "Always" and for extra fun "Stop!" 😁
I remember seeing these guys in concert in Toronto in the early 2010's.......one of the best concerts I ever went to!
Me too❤❤
Dude, you have been straight-up KILLING it with the reactions lately. Thank you, and keep it up!
May I recommend Sometimes by Erasure?
Breath of life & Love to hate you, are 2 great songs by Erasure, they have a stack of other gret songs as well as the 2 mentioned ❤
Sal…you now need to go down the rabbit hole of Yazoo (Yaz in the US due to copyright issues).
When Vince left Depeche Mode, he was worried about losing his songwriting contract with the label.
He got the then unknown Alison Moyet (Moy-ay) to sing a demo of his song, ‘Only you’.
That demo led yo the label saying they should record an album together.
The song was a huge hit.
The first album was a big hit.
A remix of the song ‘Situation’ topped the US dance charts and is one of the most sampled songs.
Based on that success they were rushed into making a second album which was also phenomenal but their interpersonal chemistry had changed.
They broke up before that album was even released.
Vince eventually formed Erste.
Alison went on to a huge solo career.
They came together 25 years later for a brief tour in which they performed many of their songs live for the first time.
Every true fan of 80s synth music has both Yazoo albums in their library.
Now that you’ve discovered Erasure, check out their videos from AꓭBAesque, their four-track EP of AꓭBA covers, but DON’T watch Take A Chance On Me before you have watched AꓭBA’s original music video.
I suggested this on his first erasure reaction.let's hope he does it.
I think he's watched AꓭBA’s version... ooh wait, he hasn't. Well, add that to the pile of requests!
BTW, love the commitment to the original AꓭBA styling 😁
Chorus, Drama, Sometimes, Love to Hate You, SO many awesome tunes
Love To Hate You and Blue Savannah are two of my favourite Erasure hits. They’re so entertaining
Totally agree
I love Erasure! They have many great songs and are so fun in concert.
The Innocents album is fantastic from start to finish.
Around the same time, Information Society had a song called What's on your Mind that you should check out. Similar synth pop sound.
So glad you are enjoying this fabulous British band. Sometimes and Blue Savannah now need to be incoming!
I like Erasure since "Who Needs Love Like That" in 1985. I honestly thought Yazoo were back when I first heard that song because at the beginning Andy Bell was very Alison Moyet sounding for me. I had no idea there was a new Vince Clarke led band after Yazoo had disbanded. But from then on I have been following Alison Moyet solo AND Erasure!
Ditto‼️
Great music by rock and roll hull of fame
Yeeesss…thank you Salvog
Great Reaction for Pride Month! This was a big hit during my college years and first real BF. Saw Erasure live many times late 80s and 90s. Listen to the amazing The Innocents album❤
Erasure was second biggest "Alt band" behind Depeche Mode imo living through it. Supernature is a good jam - I also went pretty deep into the extended 12" remixes for all these bands. Check out Marc Almond "Tears Run Rings" - right up this alley.
next; Oh L'Amour
Such great memories! I see they stir the same reaction from you as they did me when I first heard them back in the day. They just make you want to move and groovy to their songs. Great choice!
"Always" is a brilliant song by Erasure.
I can just imagine Salvo dancing shirtless in a club to Erasure 😊
Don't tease a guy! 😀
One of the best synth bands...forever
Yay! More Erasure!! I think I mentioned this before but, I will suggest watching them live. If you are enjoying their studio/video version, you will love the live performances.
Stop! and Sometimes are two of my favorites!
"Sometimes" (20m views, almost 3x the views on the official video than Chains of Love) is another of their most well-known songs. Both of these were played quite a bit in their day on the radio and MTV. They have a great sense of what makes a catchy beat for a song.
Their greatest hits package is amazing. I would love a reaction to Chorus. ❤❤
I remember this song in the club on my 21st birthday! Fun times
Honestly, it’s hard to find a less-than-excellent Erasure song 😊
No better pure pop song than "Stop!".
I saw Erasure in Orlando on the Wild! Tour. Phenomenal show
Honestly, you'd have loved the 80's alternative dance clubs, the music was incredible! Bands like Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Human League, Heaven 17, Simple Minds, Thompson Twins, Information Society, and of course, New Order. It was a great great time for dance music!
"Eli's coming" by 3 Dog Night, a groove
👍 Salvo! YASS! So freaking awesome to see you comeback to the synth power duo that is ERASURE. Good choice to go with “Chains Of Love” as the follow up your awesome reaction for “A Little Respect”. Both songs off “The Innocents” album and both being singles off that album. “Chains Of Love” was the second single released off “The Innocents” album (the lead single was “Ship Of Fools”) with “A Little Respect” being the third single released to which you posted one of my favorite of all your reaction videos to date. Just in case you’re curious, my favorite of all your vids is the one you did for ABBA’s song “The Name Of The Game” 🙌🏼 But I digress, so, back to ERASURE. You will get many suggestions for future ERASURE reactions, so, I have to share mine for you to consider. First suggestion is from their previous album (before “The Innocents”) titled “The Circus”and the lead off single releases from the album called “Sometimes” my personal all time favorite Erasure song.
It’s also the song which brought them their first U.K. singles chart smash reaching #2 after their first 3 initial singles didn’t make much of a impact reaching #55, #100 and #85 respectively. “Sometimes” was a bona fide smash and understandably so. Erasure’s follow up to “The Innocents” is their second U.K. #1 album “Wild!” from which I highly recommend you consider “Blue Savannah” as a potential reaction choice and just one final suggestion from yet another U.K. #1 album “I Say, I Say, I Say” the song is “Always”. Looking forward to any future Erasure reactions and hopefully the next one will come sooner than later similar to the quick turn around between your “A Little Respect” and “Chains Of Love” reactions. Peace and continued pleasant surprises on your Erasure listening experiences. 😊
They are still amazing..you should check out some of their newer songs!!!!!
Erasure + ABBA = Magic. You need to check out "Take A Chance On Me"
You were totally born for the 80s! For more synth, try some Howard Jones.
Drama is their best track.
the Ultimate Dance 80's Style Tune in the Later part of 80's where you could Club it Up and Dance to this JuggerNaut!!!
Erasure - Take A Chance On Me should be next
Another fun one I think you'll like is "I Love To Hate You" by Erasure. It samples "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor, but carries the signature Erasure trademark. I listen to it in the car all the time when I want a happy feeling.
Erasure covered a medieval madrigal (Gaudete), which is IN LATIN, and it was fab. That takes talent.
Also STOP, Little Respect, and Blue Savannah are my Faves
I recommend Life in a Northern Town by Dream Academy. It’s one of those songs that set a scene and a mood.
I'm loving your Erasure journey. This album is where I first discovered them as a band when I was in 8th grade back in the day.
May I recommend "Love to Hate You" and "Oh L'amour" as follow ups from Erasure?
You need to do Yazoo and Alison Moyet too.
Even when singing sad songs, Erasure are never morose, there’s always as sense of positivity in their music.
My favourite is the acoustic version of Tenderest Moments which was featured on their Union Street album.
Not forgetting:
Who Needs Love Like That / Hideaway / Victim Of Love / Leave Me To Bleed / Spiralling (Orchestral) / Phantom Bride / When I Needed You / Blue Savannah / Drama! / Star / Gloria / Chorus / Love To Hate You / Am I Right? / Breath Of Life / Take A Chance On Me (Abba cover - watch the video!) / Piano Song / Turns The Love To Anger / Stop! / I Love Saturday / Always / Because You’re So Sweet / Sono Luminus / Fingers And Thumbs (Cold Summer’s Day) / Rock Me Gently / Stay With Me / Love The Way You Do So / In My Arms / Don’t Say Your Love Is Killing Me / Boy / Mad As We Are / Here I Go Impossible Again / Let’s Take One More Rocket To The Moon / Breathe / All This Time Still Falling Out Of Love / Don’t Say You Love Me / I Broke It All In Two / I Bet You’re Mad At Me / Storm In A Teacup / I Could Fall In Love With You / and many, many more.
Soooo happy and gay! lol and this song is the main theme song played at Pride. lol
You might like Scissor Sisters doing I Don't Feel Like Dancing
Love that song! And I Can't Decide
Thanks for reacting to my favorite Erasure song. I would like to recommend their cover of the song "River Deep, Mountain High".
SO - Vince Clarke started Depeche Mode, Yaz(oo), and then Erasure
they also recorded Take a chance on me by ABBA. hilarious in drag as Agnetha and Frida
ERASURE - *TAKE ME BACK*
Blue Savannah...you will love it!!!!!
You like Erasure, you like ABBA. Now listen to Erasure covering ABBA. In 1992 Erasure released ABBA-esque, an Extended Play, covering five of ABBA’s songs; Take A Chance On Me, Voulez-Vous, Lay All Your Love On Me, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, and S.O.S.
Drama ..... victim of love ..,..are two of there best !!
You gotta watch the cover they do of ABBA's Take A Chance on Me, it's a perfect recreation of the original video and all. I can't remember if you saw that one yet.
Picked one of my faves of theirs 👏
One of my favorite songs of all time. This was BIG back in my 20's when I was trying to enjoy gay clubs. I didn't fit in though. BUT what a HUGE song in the clubs. OMG. SO GOOD
Yay I can’t wait to deal with it!! I love all of the songs on their entire albums!!! ❤❤❤
Next-Love to Hate You
for a tiny bit of background. Most think the lyrics are pointed to an increasingly difficult time for the gay community w/ the Thatcher crack down on rights in the middle 80's. This song being a reaction to feeling 'chained' by the govt.
absolutely! like now, that shambles of a government were doing their damndest to create division! thatcher is still in power.
Please do sometimes, stop, love to hate you next.
"Always" and "In my arms" were their 2 other U.S hits
Do "Ol Amour' or Blue Savannah or Always.. you'll love them all. even Ship of Fools!
I strongly recommend Blue Savannah, a truly beautiful song by them.
They did 4 songs from ABBA too .. they are a fab pop duo from 80's & 90's
So many choices of erasure songs to listen to, CHORUS for example
now the next one you should listen too is Always, my personal fav of theirs.
Happy someone appreciates them. Erasure is the best. You should go to the circus. Victim of love or you could go forward to Wild- Drama?? Or Blue Savannah. They have a big catalog.
Next...Blue Savannah has always been my fave....La Gloria is a trip....and Drama is aptly named❤
Check out “Always”
Love that song
❤Erasure❤ such an important band for the Gen X Queer community
❤
I hope you do 'Blue Savannah' one day. Such a lovely, drifty song
Good one too!

Welcome to the rabbit hole, Erasure are amazing. Next song to react: LOVE TO HATE YOU, no doubt. Thanks for your reaction
Love it when a younger generation reacts to music from my generation! Could I interest you to react to Milli Vanilli? The greatest fraud ever to be perpetuated in the music industry? We didn't care when we found out the truth because we loved the music so much! It may be right up your alley! Just saying! 🤠 "Girl You Know It's True" - "Blame It on the Rain" - "Baby Don't Forget My Number"
