    Note: Thanks to HylianAngel for pointing out that Hylian Captains actually have no weakness to any element.
    Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition launches May 18th in the West.
    This is a full review for Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch. In this video I look at the entire game, from top to bottom, leaving no stone unturned as I explain and analyze my experience with this game, including some helpful sections to help new players, or players who missed out on the Legends version of the game.
    I have been playing this game since it launched in March in Japan, and I have unlocked every weapon, costume, and my fairy item in the game. In order to do this, I've had to play through the story twice and thoroughly explore every adventure mode map, and all of the challenge mode content.
    If you're not familiar with my content, I have covered Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors Legends extensively before this, with guides for each individual playstyle, search for my All About Hyrule Warriors playlist if you're interested.
    I hope this review helps both old and new player alike, teaching some things they didn't know about the game before, answering the many unanswered questions about it that are out there, and and helping them decide if they want to pick up this game for the first time, double dip, or maybe like me, even triple dip.
    Thanks for watching, everyone!

    Small addition: The health damage score counter has been changed in this version. It is now percentage based, and for most battles you can take up to 150% of your character's health in damage and still keep the top rank. This also means that the bigger your character's health bar is, the more lenient this quota will be. It's a great change and gives an actual incentive for heart piece hunting.

      I'm new to the warriors series and would like to know if I should get this one or the Fire Emblem One. I'm very interested in the series but I know the Fire Emblem inovates in some ways and I would like to know witch is the best one for getting first. I love the Fire Emblem series and loooooooooooooooooooooove all Zelda games. So I'm here begging for some help to decide :). And thanks for all the good content of your chanel. Sorry for the bad english, I'm from Brazil :)

      I'M SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW. I had 600% completed (as in LITERALLY EVERYTHING INCLUDING LEGENDS DLC) the Original WiiU Hyrule Warriors with 800+ hours logged and many of those were trying to get A ranks by avoiding ludicrous damage! Hopefully as well, since it reads your health, does this mean if I heal near the end, would that count toward A rank?
      I never came close to completing Legends on 3DS; it looks ugly (I have a New3DS btw), it's choppy, you cannot get 2 of the achievement medals due to requiring 50 Rental Skills which I believe is changed or outright removed from the Switch version, and 4 sets of promotional DLC-only clothing for My Fairies were never released to the public (unlike the promotional costume DLC packs for Link, Zelda and Ganondorf which WERE available to the public via the eshop).
      It's a shame the Max Rupee glitch from the WiiU version is fixed...UNLESS you trigger it a different way?
      Legends handled obtained rupees differently due to how the system is more limited so you couldn't do it.

      Mark Haynes - WOW. the 3ds version was complete @$$. I am amazed at your perseverance and patience. I mean 3ds HW was literally unplayable for me. I can't do tiny screen, bad graphics sub 16 FPS

    • @AlvinEarthworm
      @AlvinEarthworm 6 років тому +14

      @IMRavnos I didn't own a Wii U. So my only options at the time were play it on the New 3DS XL or not at all.
      Honestly, the game worked perfectly fine for me, so the worse graphics was a compromise I was willing to make in order to have a portable version of the game. Once the Switch version comes out next week though, I won't be playing Legends again. HW:DE pretty much makes the previous two versions obsolete.

    • @IMRavnos
      @IMRavnos 6 років тому +3

      MH - wasn't criticizing, if anything I was praising =) I was going to buy the 3ds for the content not in the Wii U version, so I DL'd a pirated version to use as a demo ( I don't pirate games to steal them, just to check them out and than buy physical if I enjoy the first 30 minutes to an hour ). I found going from the Wii U to the 3ds to be nearly unplayable for me. However, I hold no elitist attitude towards those who played the 3ds, I just think you guys and gals who did so are far more patient and forgiving than I am. Luckily, the Switch version will be the best of all so we all win ( all Switch owners that is ).

    Honestly, the thing I am most excited for is that all of the characters now have level 4+ weapons. It really bothered my in the 3DS version that some of the DLC characters never got 4+ weapons merely because they were added afterwards, and that really bugged my sense of OCD, so I'm glad to hear that everyone has their own 4+ weapon!

    IMO the fairy magic animation is both eye candy and a deserved nerf, as the game clock (including for example Magic Fountain timer) still ticks away the seconds during the animation, just like during special attacks. This makes it less spammable, in a healthy way.

    After playing Hyrule Warriors on Wii U a few days after its release, my then alive brother asked me if I wanted to try a Dynasty Warriors game, I played some DW: Gundam (forgot which one), and... I loved the original game (did a heck of a lot of it, but didn't even get close to 100% it) and was incredibly happy to pick up this gem. It's been my "decompress after work" activity on-and-off for two years now, with plenty of content to spare. It's hard to really express just how satisfying and relaxing a couple of map clears can be.

    Hello, there. I wanted to let you know that there is some incorrect information in your video. About 3 years ago, I compiled information on enemy captain weaknesses into a guide. I included incorrect info on a particular enemy: Hylian Captains. In in I stated that Hylian Captains are weak to Darkness. However, Hylian Captains are not weak to Darkness. They are neutral to all elements.
    This incorrect information got copy-pasted from my guide to many other location on the internet. If you could add an annotation or something, that would help from spreading the misinformation.

    There is one thing missing from the previous versions, though it is pretty minor: the WiiU version played cutscenes in real time rather than FMVs. This meant that your characters could show up with whatever costumes or weapons you had equipped on them (which could be made pretty amusing with stuff like the 8-bit weapons). Again, it's minor, and hardly something to detract from all the other awesome shit you're getting in the Switch version (more so since extremely few characters could even appear in cutscenes in the first place), but I just thought I'd mention it.
    Also, I'm sorry, but I wasn't fond of the 3DS version either. Mind you, it's not like I didn't give the thing a chance, as I did play through the entire story mode before putting it down, though I can't say I got too deep into Adventure. Regardless, the cutback in performance really did show, and not just graphically (I was especially bothered by fort bosses having a delayed appearance on several occasions, which is a concern when so many missions press you for time). And it especially sucked that they couldn't bring any of this content back to the WiiU version as DLC (sans the new characters and weapons). Either version of the game was essentially a compromise between having extra content, and being able to play the game on the high-powered system it was originally designed for (plus, some minor bits of WiiU-exclusive content like the Challenge Mode and 8-bit weapons). That said, I'm all the more thankful that the Switch version came out to combine the best of both worlds. Ports of WiiU games have been a thing ever since the Switch came out, and this game was easily at the top of my list of games in need of that treatment. With the WiiU's failure and the 3DS's upgraded-downgraded port, I feel this game really was left in an awkward spot, and it's nice to see Koei Tecmo decided to revisit it one more time to do it justice (and being the importer that I am, I've already been playing the Japanese version for the past month and loving it to death).

    I didn't even know about the "Warriors" franchise nor was i a big Zelda fan when i bought the game. However i did (and still do, i haven't finished the game yet) enjoy playing it. My only other experience with Hack 'N Slash games is Senran Kagura: Estival Versus so i'm not even that big of a fan of Hack 'n Slash games either (though i do enjoy them).
    I gotta say that i do agree with you in the fact that the most fun part of this game is going to Adventure Mode and unlocking the new items and costumes. When i learned that you can get MORE weapons for the already (Mostly) fun characters AND EVEN MORE characters to play as? It completely blew my mind and i began to hunt for the new items ASAP.
    While i wouldn't consider myself a true completionist i do enjoy and appreciate what this game has to offer in both quantity and quality. (I also love their redesigns of some of the characters, specifically i think they NAILED Ganondorf's design here and it is my favorite version of him design-wise to this day.)

    The one thing that always upsets me with let's plays of the game like those from Zack Scott or Zebra Gamer is that they only touch the legend mode and never even bring up the menu for adventure mode. They miss out on so much content and possible videos for the game and don't even get to use all of the great weapons and possible gameplay styles in the game because of this lack of extra content

    I got back into this game a short while ago and was so hooked that I played several 5-6 hour sessions day by day and during that time I noticed something that might help with the whole "long running game time will cause glitches and crashes" thing. Whenever I saw visual errors starting to happen, there was always one elemtn first that started acting up: I could see HP bars through the walls. THe game still ran fine except for some shifting floor textures where different maps overlapped, but the HP bars were always the first visual bug I found. So just to make sure I'd advise anyone who wants to get into this game to pay attention to the HP bars and when you start seeing them where you're not supposed to, just finish your run and restart the game.

Even though this is the "definitive edition", do you think it is possible for future new DLC to be added to the game, and if so, will you be covering any new characters/playstyles and weapons on this channel? Although it's the definitive edition, I've heard that Koei Tecmo puts tons of DLC in their other warriors titles.

    So I've been doing some extra research into how Weaknesses work, and did find two things not mentioned in this review that might be useful.
    - There are no elemental resistances. Girahim will take neutral damage from Dark attacks just like any other non-weak character.
    - Giant bosses do have weaknesses. They won't take more damage from just any attack with an elemental weapon, but using specific attacks that inflict that elements bonus effect will make their weak point gauges go down faster.

    I just got the master sword last night. Prior to getting that far into the story, I had already managed to unlock every character except Toon Link, Tetra, Medil, King of Red Lions, and Yuuga. Of these characters, I need the hammer to get everyone in Wind Waker, and Medil to get Yuuga, due to the specific mission bottleneck in front of Yuuga and the first WW mission having you fight the bird. Point is even the late map characters are incredibly easy to unlock.

    This is an amazing review. Excellent work GB. Especially compared to that IGN: "here's what we said about the other version" attempt.

  • @Shay96
    @Shay96 6 років тому

    Also, it's not just the high base damage that makes the master sword great. It's the additional beams of light on combo attacks and aerial slashes that add range, spread and damage when Link is at full health. Light light heavy with the master sword trivialises mostly anything in the game.

    Great review! My only gripe is that the game isn't really 60fps but can be near it and rarely hits it.

    • @Monafide3305
      @Monafide3305 6 років тому

      You sure? I've played 200+ hours and seemed like 60 fps. I tend to notice framerate changes in games, but I could be wrong.
      Now in handheld mode, I've noticed significant drops in some scenarios, but never in docked mode.

    Ravio, Yuga, Medli, Toon Zelda and the Link's Awakening Girl don't have any costumes, right?
    (i'm sorry if my question sounds dumb.) :

      I'm fairly sure they have some recolor skins, but don't count on that, haven't played the game and it's been like 2 years since I watched the video containing all the costumes, probably also done by the brain dude who made this video

    • @TiziOssidiano
      @TiziOssidiano 6 років тому

      i'm asking because, being dlc characters, they didn't receive any.
      I would be kind of sad if in the definitive edition they were the only ones without different costumes/recolors
      at least they get LV4+ weapons like the others. (my english is awful, sorry.)

    • @ToonTris

      In the original DLC for them, they did not receive any costumes as they were DLC characters. People expected that this time around, in Definitive Edition, they would get at least some recolors...but no. Medli, Marin, Toon Zelda, Ravio, and Yuga do not receive any costumes.
      It's not a dumb question though, don't worry!

    Lmao, somehow I’m still trying to do all this game, I had a good 300 hours in legends, didn’t feel like the dlc for the 3ds, then the switch version came out and I’m at 250 hours no where near close to 100% completion, it’s gonna take another year until I come slightly close and maybe a few breaks from the game now and again when I get bored of repetition

    Best character, even better than Link himself, is definitely Young Link! The whole fight you are basically able to stay in Magic Form due to his special attack button being the flute that converts special attack to magic. Love destroying every map with Fierce Deity Link :D

    I can't get into the adventure mode because it forces you to play characters you hate to get many of the rewards you want, and you have to waste time and resources on those characters to get them strong enough to get the gold medals. I just wanna play as a handful of characters; my 'dream team'. Basically every other musou game in existence understands this and lets you do this, but hyrule warriors insists on wasting your time and trampling on your patience. It's a damn shame.

    • @JaneWombman-fn6ck
      @JaneWombman-fn6ck 14 днів тому

      It's a grind but you get all the resources back doing missions you don't wanna do. When I get stuck on a few missions before the skin or weapon I want, I go to a different map and look for a different skin or weapon. Lately I've been looking for fairy clothes. Before I know it I have so many materials etc
      It'll make finally getting what you want so worth it! I had to force myself to get good at Agitha and it payed off, 'cause now when I have to use her it's not a struggle.

    What do you think are the chances of the Switch seeing another Nintendo Warriors game in its lifetime? The Wii U only got HW (which I have), but I'm hoping that the Switch isn't just limited to FE Warriors.

    I know this video is really old, but thanks for answering a question for me. I've been going back to play this recently (picked it up at launch but just never put the time in like the 600+ hours I put into the other two versions, but Age of Calamity got me interested in picking it up again) and I hadn't been able to find a consistent answer on what was needed to unlock the Master Sword, especially with two other versions of the game making it hard to Google :P Basically I didn't know if I needed the weapons for the Legends DLC characters or not (boo, looks like I do after all...)
    Oh, and yeah, I've definitely been noticing the pretty nasty glitching if you leave the game on too long. Too bad two years later they never fixed that. (luckily I've never had it crash but it's gotten pretty messed up graphically like what you showed in the video)

    I've been waiting for this review to come out for a long time! Thank you so much! I only played Hyrule Warriors for the Wii U since I didn't have a 3DS so I'm very excited to be able to play the Hyrule Warriors: Legends side of this franchise, also being able to play all the downloadable content is a plus as well. I already prepurchased it and the hype is real. ^^
